Armand Junior joins the Furnworld team The son of former Junior Springbok lock Armand du Preez has joined the Furnworld team. Armand Jnr spent the past 11 years in Italy, where he played for Valorugby, the current Italian champions. In his very last match in the Italian league cup, the club won for the first time in their eighty-year existence. Armand Snr started Furnworld International in 1999 after a knee injury ended his rugby career in 1997 while he was playing for Transvaal, and because he found that there was a need for exotic and superior quality leather furniture. After extensive research into clients’ needs and with a desire to provide a product without equal anywhere in the world, Du Preez identified five non-negotiable principles: Only the best quality full-grain leather must be used. Dajees is a three-generation family business founded by Dayal Dajee in Jansenville. He moved to Uitenhage in the 1930s and opened a fruit shop in Constitution Road, later relocating to the business's current location in Durban Street in the late 1930s. Many of Uitenhage's older residents will remember the old fruit shop and the grocery store next to it. The business changed direction in the early 1980s, when Dayal's son, Shantilal Dajee, known as Santy, and his brother Raman bought the two houses next door from Walter and Rosey Hitchens. A new store was built on the site, where the family started selling household goods, appliances, radios, TVs, crockery and gifts. In the early to mid-1990s, as customers' needs changed, a few hardware lines were introduced. Aneil Dajee, who had been working as an engineer at Goodyear Rubber and Tyre, joined the family business and initiated further changes, drawing on input from customers, suppliers and former colleagues. Today, Aneil is the managing member. Day-to-day operations are managed by Paul van Jaarsveld, who has been at his side for 24 years. Van Jaarsveld and his team have been instrumental in the business's growth and diversification. Three-generation family businesses are more than
commercial enterprises. They are living institutions built on hard work, shared values and a long-term commitment to success. Each generation contributes unique skills that help the business grow and remain relevant. The first generation establishes the foundation. Beginning with limited resources, the founder identifies what the community needs, takes financial risks and creates the business's identity. Their personal relationships with customers and suppliers become important assets. The second generation strengthens and expands the business, introducing new products and improving the location while respecting the founder's principles and adapting to changing market conditions. The third generation brings fresh energy, expertise and new ways of thinking. They introduce technology and new operational methods, adapting to the digital age and a competitive world. Their involvement helps ensure the business continues to appeal to future customers. At Dajees, the goal is to create a positive, supportive culture that promotes retention and reduces staff turnover.
