IN a significant step toward securing reliable water access for thousands of Eastern Cape residents, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina officially unveiled the completed Kirkwood Bulk Water Supply Project in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood), located within the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality
This strategic infrastructure project, funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) and implemented by Amatola Water, aims to strengthen water security in the Sarah Baartman District
The development has increased raw water storage capacity from 20 2 million litres to 34 2 million litres, significantly improving supply reliability for over 16 000 residents in Nqweba, Bontrug (Moses Mabida), Msengeni, and surrounding communities
The unveiling brought together key leaders united by a common goal: delivering clean, sustainable water to the people
Among the dignitaries present were Sarah Baartman District Executive Mayor, Deon de Vos, Sundays River Valley Municipality Mayor, Solethu Lucas, Chairperson of the Multi-Party Women’s Caucus, Lindelwa Dunjwa, Mike Primmer, CEO of Lower Sundays River Water Users Association and officials from Amatola Water Board and the Department of Water and Sanitation
The completed project includes a newly constructed 14 million-litre raw water lay dam at the Kirkwood Water Treatment Works, two 3-million-litre steel reservoirs; one in Kirkwood serving Aqua Park and Bergsig, and another in Bontrug for Moses Mabida and surrounding areas, along with essential infrastructure like inlet chambers, interconnecting pipework, and security fencing to ensure efficient water zoning and distribution

The day began with a visit to SANRAL’s Technical Excellence Academy and Freeway Management System (FMS) Facility
The FMS is a groundbreaking project and the first of its kind in the province
It enables SANRAL to monitor road conditions in real time, respond promptly to incidents, and provide live updates to motorists, enhancing road safety “Zone 1 will be fully operational by June or July this year, and all incident management data will be fed directly to the Traffic Management Centre for immediate action,” explained one of SANRAL’s engineers

The R335 project is part of SANRAL’s extensive work in the region, which also includes construction along the N2 national road between St Albans and Linton Grange

KAIZEN Karate Academy recently participated in the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) Afro Asian Open, held at The Boardwalk in Gqeberha.
This prestigious event, currently the biggest karate competition on the African continent, brought top martial artists from across the region.
It was the first competition for most of their kids, but they performed admirably.
Most of the participants from the academy advanced past the preliminary rounds and competed in the finals
A standout moment came from the youngest competitor, Lukah Maziena (5), who competed in the girls' u/7 Kata category. With confidence beyond her years, she clinched
a bronze medal; a proud moment for her, coaches, and the entire academy.

Bambigaladaya success
Bambi Swim School hosted their second swimming gala this past weekend. Owner, Cathy Curtain said, ‘The aim of the gala was to show off our swimmers swimming skills and the progress to their parents and peers. We were blessed with fantastic weather on the day and the event was a huge success.’ The highlight of the day was the children’s races against their coaches, and while the coaches won the relay, the learners gave spectators a good challenge. ‘Bambi swim team is extremely grateful to the parents entrusting their children’s swimming development to our coaches. DIE Despatch-krieketklub bied van 18 tot 24 Mei vyf wedstryde aan as deel van die nasionale toernooi vir spelers 40 jaar en ouer.
Die OP is die gasheer met wedstryde wat ook in die Baai gespeel sal word. Dié nuus is deur die president van die klub, Morné Kilian, bekend gemaak. Dit sal net die tweede keer wees dat die oor 40-toernooi beslis word.
Kilian sê vyf wedstryde sal op Despatch en twee op die Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar se velde gespeel word.
Hy sê sowat 160 spelers, afrigters en bestuurders word verwag.
Kilian sê Despatch is vanweë sy spoggerige velde, klubgeriewe en kleedkamers deur die ITP-beheerliggaam gevra of hy bereid sou wees om dié gewilde toernooi aan te bied.
“Uiteraard het ons onmiddellik ja gesê,” sê hy
Kilian hy, sy bestuur en die hele gemeenskap sien daarna uit om sterre van die verlede op die dorp te verwelkom
“Vir ons is die toernooi ’n besonderse pluimpie en ’n groot eer vir die dorp.
“Dis ’n trotse geleentheid en ons wil almal besonder welkom heet wat hierheen kom vir die toernooi.”
Kilian en sy span helpers is reeds besig om die velde na die beste van hulle vermoë voor te berei
Met die Despatch-klub wat sy beste voet gaan voortsit kan die krieketliefhebbers hulle gereed maak vir spogvertonings deur ervare spelers wat oor die jare min van hulle vernuf verloor het. Die oud-Protea Ashwell Prince is maar een van talle oud-sterre wat al in dié toernooi gespeel het.
Intussen is bekend gemaak dat die wêreldtoernooi vir spelers 60 jaar en ouer aanstande maand in die Kaap beslis word.
Suid-Afrika het twee spanne in die openingswedstryde.
Die SA Impalas speel in die eerste wedstryd teen Zimbabwe, terwyl die SA Kudus teen Amerika te staan kom
