High tea supports community causes

A fun-filled afternoon of entertainment and games was recently enjoyed by guests at the Mad Hatter High Tea, with delegates dressed to impress. The event was presented by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South in partnership with Kelston Volkswagen Uitenhage. Attendees enjoyed a variety of entertainment, with the highlight being the singing duo of Patrick and Shuling Lindoor. The president of the Rotary Club, Riku Muller, noted that the event was held in support of two worthy causes. “Huis Minette and the KwaNobuhle Rape Crisis Centre are the beneficiaries of the event. Guests also generously donated a table full of non-perishable food items and toiletries, which Rotary will gratefully distribute to those in need in the community,” he said. Muller thanked Kelston VW, the many sponsors and all those who attended, adding that Rotary plans to make the High Tea an annual event and a highlight of the Kariega social calendar. Bail denied for Hawks officer in kidnapping case SHANTI JAFTA A HAWKS officer accused in connection with alleged kidnappings has been denied bail after the Gqeberha Regional Court found that his personal circumstances did not constitute exceptional circumstances justifying his release. Acting Regional Magistrate Thabiso Mpimpilashe delivered the judgment on Friday, 30 October, refusing the bail application of Xolani Busakwe (47), who is facing charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. In her findings, Mpimpilashe said the State had presented prima facie evidence linking Busakwe to the alleged offences, including cellphone data placing him at or near the scenes of the crimes before or during their commission. The magistrate also referred to evidence allegedly connecting him to his co-accused, from whom ransom money and assets believed to have been bought with the proceeds of crime were recovered. According to the investigating officer's affidavit, there was also evidence of Busakwe arranging and participating in the sale of a BMW allegedly purchased with the proceeds of crime. The magistrate said Busakwe allegedly continued using the vehicle after it had been registered in another person's

name, with his brother, Ayabulela Busakwe, having paid for it. She further noted that, on the day Ayabulela was arrested, Busakwe allegedly drove the BMW to Pretoria and parked it at a friend's residence rather than at his own home. Mpimpilashe added that the circumstances surrounding the vehicle, together with the discovery of large amounts of cash and assets registered in another person's name, raised suspicion. The court also raised concerns about 12 police case files dating back to 2022, which were found at Busakwe's Pretoria residence. Busakwe had previously been stationed at the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) before moving to Pretoria in December 2024. The magistrate said police officers were not permitted to keep official case files, dockets or sensitive police documents at their homes, adding that such conduct could result in the unauthorised disclosure of confidential information and interfere with investigations. She confirmed that the applicant had not provided evidence showing that he was authorised to keep the files at his residence. Mpimpilashe further considered evidence relating to Busakwe's cellphone use. She noted that although he denied having two devices, the second cellphone number he acknowledged as belonging to him was con-

nected to another device. The magistrate said Busakwe had also refused to provide his cellphone password, which the investigating officer said would prolong the process of retrieving data during the investigation. While acknowledging that a person had the right to refuse to assist police with an investigation, she said this could also suggest that information was being concealed. In considering the interests of justice, Mpimpilashe said that the main objective of bail was to secure an accused person's attendance at court. She acknowledged that Busakwe had a fixed residential address and strong family ties in Gqeberha, and that there was no evidence suggesting he had the means to travel, as he did not have a passport or travel documents. The court also considered his personal circumstances, including that he was employed, had no previous brushes with the law or pending cases, and was the father of six children. However, the magistrate noted that five of the children did not live with him and found that the information provided in his affidavit about his family responsibilities and financial circumstances was insufficiently detailed. She also considered evidence that he was on regular chronic medication but found no evidence that refusing bail would adversely

affect his health. The magistrate said the offences under consideration were serious and involved violence, with complainants allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint and threatened with assault or death if ransom money was not paid. She further noted that, if convicted, Busakwe could face lengthy imprisonment under the prescribed minimum sentencing provisions of Section 51 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Mpimpilashe said the court was not required to determine the merits of the criminal case during bail proceedings, as the quality and weight of the evidence would ultimately be assessed by the trial court. However, she rejected the argument that the State's case was weak, finding that the applicant had not presented sufficient evidence to demonstrate that he would ultimately be acquitted. In her conclusion, the magistrate found that Busakwe's personal circumstances were commonplace and not out of the ordinary, and therefore did not amount to exceptional circumstances warranting his release. "The applicant has not discharged the onus put on him by Section 60(11) of the CPA," she said. Bail was accordingly refused and Busakwe will reappear with his co-accused on 1 December, where they'll remain in custody.

Paramedics answer call to help dying dog in Gqeberha ALULUTHO MADOLO A DESPERATE phone call to an ambulance service usually reserved for humans became the lifeline for a gravely ill dog and her owner in Gqeberha. When every option seemed to close around

her, Gardmed Ambulance Service answered the call, brought oxygen, transported a dying pet to the vet and stayed long after their duty ended. Celeste Bataille's dog, Bella, fell gravely ill recently, breathing heavily with a discoloured tongue and gums. An after-hours vet

suggested leaving Bella in an oxygen tank overnight and warned she could die alone. "Without any compassion the vet told me I could leave her and that she could die that night alone. I was horrified and immediately said I will go for a second opinion," said Bataille. Bataille took Bella home after the vet gave her injections and searched pharmacies for oxygen in vain. "She needed oxygen, but it was mostly that her heart was beating so fast; I stayed up with her all night. When I woke up, I thought of calling an ambulance as I knew she needed oxygen," she said. Bataille said an idea came from memory; her late mother had emphysema and often needed an ambulance. "I just thought of my mom needing an ambulance often as she suffered with emphysema when she was alive, so I called Gardmed, unsure they would respond." She said paramedics arrived with a portable oxygen tank and fitted it on Bella. "They brought a portable oxygen tank, and we immediately put it on her. The paramedic did it so caringly. I asked the crew to transport Bella as she needed constant oxygen, and they agreed after getting permission from their supervisor; they didn't hesitate." The first responder recommended 9th Avenue Veterinary Clinic and phoned ahead. "All four paramedics were absolutely compassionate and professional," she said. Crew member Jaenine Jackson (Intermediate Life Support), went into the clinic to keep Bella company. "She [Jackson] messaged me later that day to find out how Bella was doing, and I could not believe how kind that was," she said. Bataille said her dog has since sadly passed away. "I did not think an ambulance would respond to a call about a dog and was overwhelmed with relief when they did. It meant everything to me as I was desperate to get her help. I did not think they would fetch a dog, so I was so relieved she was in capable hands. "I am grateful beyond measure, the way the paramedic held my Bella in her arms with her blanket and the oxygen mask on her, it was so beautiful," she said. Bataille hopes the story reminds people to appreciate those who serve. "The paramedics should be appreciated; there are good people in this world. Gardmed is the best ambulance service, and I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to people in need," she said. Gardmed Ambulance Service marketing

and PR manager Phillip Monteith said, "Working with animals is not something we actually do; it's so rare. The last time we did anything to do with an animal was when we had a patient who was stressed about her dog being missing. We only went and looked for the dog; we found it and reunited it with the owner; that is all we did. "This one was very unique and different, and the lady was stressed; she had nowhere to go. Fortunately, she called Gardmed, and she said we had helped her mom years ago and we were able to go and assist. My team took the incident as a normal call with empathy and as much care as they could because they could see that the owner was stressed," he said. Monteith said they do a lot of community services where they donate for animals. "Last year we did a food drive during winter, and we donated food and blankets for the SPCA. The services and values are the same whether it's an animal or human beings; we still have to think about their emotions, so we treat every case as unique."

Despatch doppie-projek kry ’n Oos-Kaapse hupstoot

Prince het Making a difference, one person at a time in 2021 gestig.

KwaNobuhle rising star achieves global success SHANTI JAFTA Pictured are Sinothando Kula with Solomon Mahlangu’s sports master, Buzwe Kula. PHOTO: SHANTI JAFTA

SINOTHANDO Mpushe, a 17-year-old Solomon Mahlangu learner, was the only girl from Kariega who was part of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Nelson Mandela Bay Football Association (NMBFA) Region Girls U/19 team. The team travelled to Germany to participate in a football tour exchange programme, which is fully funded by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in partnership with SAFA NMBFA Region. The SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay U19 Girls Exchange Squad was hosted by Lehndorfer Turn & Sportverein (LTSV 1893), a team from Braunschweig in Germany, where they were set to play two matches, but the second one was cancelled. The first game ended in a 7-2 win for the NMBFA team. In the competition, Mpushe played as a striker and was named the top goal scorer, which is not uncommon for her. In all the competitions she participated in from 2023 until now, namely the local COSAFA Tournament, Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship, Urban Cup and Easter Tournament, while playing for Sophakama Ladies FC, she was the top goal scorer in each. The school’s sports manager, Buzwe Kula, explained that this encounter was the second with the German team. “The German team played here in South Africa for the first fixture. The away game to Germany for Sinothando was for the second leg of the fixture.” Mpushe shared that as a KwaNobuhle child, she was very happy to be chosen to participate in a tournament that took her out of the country for the first time. “I have always wanted to visit another country, especially Germany,” she said. Explaining why Germany was on her list of countries to visit, she shared that she has always wanted to see the German soccer players. “I have always wanted to meet the German female players. I saw a few in my time there, and I am happy about that. I love their league, the Frauen-Bundesliga, which is the main female league. My wish is to play there one day,” she shared. During her time in the country, Mpushe observed several differences between the local and regional spheres of South African soccer, comparing them to what she saw in Germany. “In Germany, there are many players in the women’s league. Here as well, we have players; however, the German league is

heavily supported. I don’t think our sport is supported as much in South Africa, especially women’s soccer,” she said. “I would be so happy if our league here in South Africa were supported as much as it is there.” When asked what else she had noticed from her time in Germany and what she wants to bring back to the Bay, she said she just realised that Germany is where she wants to pursue her dream of being a professional soccer player and that she wants to go there, as it has been her dream since 2020. Kula explained that through Mpushe’s talent, the school has been the beneficiary of the prize money from the regional and national stages of the Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship in 2023. “In the provincial round, we received R100,000, where she was the top goal scorer and in the national round, we received R300,000 for her excellence, as well as the rest of the team, where again she was the top goal scorer.” Kula added that the prize money received from the win helped the school, by means of renovating the school’s field and boosting the school’s resources. “We are constantly reinvesting into the school,” he said. “That is the power of sport; it can also support teaching and learning, while also improving the ex-

tra-curricular activities of learners. Some learners may not be academically gifted, but can excel in sport. A good balance between academics and sports is important. It improves the growth of a learner holistically.” Explaining how she was chosen to participate in the competition, Mpushe said she did not participate in the first leg, which was held in Gqeberha. When the team was set to go to Germany for the reverse fixture, she said she was picked by Busisiwe Stokwe, who is a South African sports administrator and the Vice President of the NMBFA. She is also a member of the SAFA National Executive Committee. When asked how she is always the top goal scorer in the competitions, she shared, “I am respectful and I practise regularly. I am very disciplined and listen to the coach, I don't just do what I want to do.” She added that sometimes she feels like women’s soccer is not prioritised, especially in Kariega. “Women’s soccer is not really funded as much as it is elsewhere,” she said. “I just wish that gets addressed because I know I am good enough to play professionally. I also want to be like any other player from the German league and local male soccer, where they are supported. If we were sup-

ported as much as they are, I know that I would succeed. Even though I feel this way, I will not stop chasing my dreams, regardless of the support I receive.” Reiterating that women’s soccer isn’t supported as much, she specified that it is not supported in Kariega. “For someone to play, they have to go to Gqeberha, and that is not easy for everyone, as currently I am playing for a Gqeberha team.” Kula shared his observation of Mpushe. “She plays like a professional and is very passionate. She is ready to be one of the stars, who deserve to play for Banyana Banyana. My wish for her is for whatever tournament she plays in, there will be scouts in attendance to see her play because I believe if there were, she would be chosen, as she has no competition in the Metro. It is not good for a learner with her talent to sit in the township and not pursue their dreams because of a lack of resources.” The school said, “The talent, the hard work, the determination and the hunger to succeed speak for themselves. She is proving that greatness comes through dedication, discipline and belief.” Kula further added that anyone who is interested in helping Mpushe by means of sponsoring her journey or supplying sports equipment is welcome to contact the school on 041 977 3022.

BAIL FOR THE PRINCIPAL:

Despatch High School, community join forces for 12-hour fundraiser THE Despatch High School is putting its principal “behind bars” for a good cause, inviting the community to walk, jog or cycle in support of school projects and local charity work. Despatch High School has launched a fundraising initiative with a light-hearted twist: placing the principal “behind bars” while raising funds for the school’s projects and Fuel on Wheels’ charitable work in the community. The event takes the form of a 12-hour movement marathon on Saturday, 7 November, from 06:00 to 18:00 at Elvis Brew, on the corner of Botha and Tulbach Streets in Despatch. The 12-hour format gives residents the flexibility to participate at different times throughout the day. People can walk, jog or cycle, form a team, arrange sponsorship per lap, contribute towards the principal’s “bail”, or simply come and enjoy the day. Fuel on Wheels cyclists will take on the challenge of completing as many laps as possible over the twelve hours. The school’s share of the proceeds will support projects aimed at improving the learners’ school environment. A portion of the funds will also go towards Fuel on Wheels’ charitable work in the communi-

ty. The fundraising target is being finalised with the organising partners and will be announced, together with progress updates, through the schools official communication channels. Residents, local businesses and community organisations are encouraged to participate. Businesses can contact the organisers to discuss sponsorship or other forms of support. Those unable to attend on the day can also make a contribution by contacting the organisers. The school hopes the initiative will raise meaningful support for both the school and the community, while strengthening relationships between residents, local businesses and community organisations. Principal Christiaan Ferreira said, “We want people to feel that they have a part to play. Whether someone completes a lap, makes a donation or helps organise the day, every contribution matters. Our hope is that the partnerships built through this event will continue well beyond 7 November.” For more information, WhatsApp: • Ilse on 072 852 7333 • Tracey on 083 948 2579 • Magda on 084 517 3608

Heideli tops district with trophy haul in academics, music THE Despatch High School is celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Heideli Hoekstra, a Grade 12 learner who has been named the school’s Dux learner of 2026 and ranks first among the top 20 learners in the district. Heideli, who was also awarded Dux learner at Sonop Primary School in 2021, continues to excel in both academics and music in high school, collecting an impressive array of trophies and honours at the Despatch High School’s recent prize-giving ceremony. Heideli received the Alumni cash prize and medal for academic achievement in Grade 12. Her prowess in Afrikaans earned her three separate accolades: the Afrikaans Christian Women’s Association (ACVV) trophy for the most promising learner in Afrikaans, the Rapportryerskorps trophy for the best achievement in Afrikaans, and the Afrikaans Language and Cultural Association (ATKV) Women’s Branch book prize for the best learner in the subject — all at Grade 12 level. In the sciences, she claimed the Hendrik Louw floating trophy for the most promis-

ing Grade 12 learner in Mathematics, the Sano Apteek trophy for Science (SkeiNat — the school’s combined physical and natural sciences category), and the Drs IM Smith and PC Kotze floating trophy for the top Grade 12 learner in Life Sciences. She was further honoured with the M.A. Kloppers trophy for the best academic achievement by a senior learner in Grade 10–12 and the J.A. Ferreira trophy for bilingualism. Her musical accomplishments were equally recognised, with two dedicated trophies: the Amanda Gouws trophy for the most advanced learner in Music and the Lynne Gouws trophy for the highest mark on an external music examination. Her musical aptitude is just as impressive as her academic results. At the Despatch Arts Festival, she achieved both A+ and A++ grades for her piano performances. Heideli is currently preparing for her Grade 8 piano examination with the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), as well as her Grade 7 grading in cello.
