Minister Malatsi visits dilapidated Kariega post office STAFF REPORTER | NOVANEWS

THE dilapidated Uitenhage Post Office in Kariega has been without electricity for more than two years and has no running water, conditions that emerged during an oversight visit by Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, on Monday, 19 October. The Caledon Street premises is intended to serve more than 200,000 residents but has been unable to do so effectively. The few remaining staff members can barely offer any services, relying on their own cellphone data,

airtime and phone torches to assist customers. The building has also been affected by ongoing cable theft and extensive vandalism. The visit followed a letter from Retief Odendaal, MPL, Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate for 2026 and Shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, to the minister’s office last week, drawing attention to the building’s poor state, the untenable working conditions endured by staff, and the lack of service delivery to the surrounding community. Odendaal said the prolonged lack of electricity had severely compromised the post office’s ability to provide services to the public.

“The particular concern is the information brought to my attention that staff members have been forced to rely on the torch functions of their mobile phones to assist customers under these extremely difficult circumstances,” he said. He said the situation raised serious concerns about working conditions, the safety and security of the premises, and the quality of service provided to residents, and that he had been informed the funding needed to repair the damage and restore electricity was currently unavailable. Odendaal called on Malatsi to urgently intervene and ensure the necessary steps were

taken to restore electricity and return the post office to full operational capacity, so that staff could work under acceptable conditions and residents could receive the services to which they were entitled. The South African Post Office (SAPO) remains under business rescue — a formal legal process that protects a financially distressed company from creditors while a turnaround plan is developed. Malatsi has committed to exploring ways to improve conditions at the Uitenhage Post Office and has previously introduced reforms and interventions to address challenges facing SAPO.

Kariega waste sites fail AfriForum’s landfill audit STAFF REPORTER | NOVANEWS KARIEGA’S Koedoeskloof landfill and Hillwacht transfer station are among the four worst-performing waste management sites in the Eastern Cape, according to AfriForum’s 2026 landfill audit, which found that none of the five Nelson Mandela Bay Metro facilities assessed met the minimum compliance requirements. Koedoeskloof recorded a compliance score of 36%, while Hillwacht managed only 30%. The five sites audited in Nelson Mandela Bay achieved an average score of 42%, well below the 80% threshold required to pass the audit. The other facilities assessed were the Arlington landfill in Gqeberha, which scored 44%, and the Gillespie and Rosedale transfer stations in Kariega, which recorded 50% and 52% respectively. Louis van der Vyver, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Eastern Cape, said the poor performance of waste management facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay, the province’s largest metro with approximately 1.2 million residents, was particularly concerning. “Effective waste management is non-negotiable and has a far-reaching impact on people and the environment. There is no longer time for excuses – the municipalities’ poor performance in this audit clearly indicates that we are heading toward a disaster,” he said. The audit also found declining compliance

at facilities in the neighbouring Kouga Local Municipality. The Humansdorp landfill site, which passed the audit in 2025 with a score of 80%, dropped to 68% this year, falling below the required threshold. The Hankey landfill site scored 44%, unchanged from its 2024 result. Its compliance score has fluctuated between 42% and 44% over the past two years. The Roundhill landfill site in KuGompo, formerly East London, was the only facility in the Eastern Cape to pass this year’s audit. It recorded a compliance score of 96%, down from 100% in 2025 but substantially higher than the 64% achieved in 2023. Van der Vyver said Roundhill’s performance was an exception in a province where waste management facilities continued to struggle. “One swallow does not make a summer, and this is especially true in the Eastern Cape. Despite Roundhill’s exceptional performance, the province managed only an average compliance score of 55%. If Roundhill were excluded, the other eight sites audited in the province would not even have managed a combined compliance score of 50%,” he said. The Eastern Cape’s average compliance score of 55% was marginally below KwaZulu-Natal’s 56%. The Western Cape and Gauteng recorded the highest provincial averages, at 66% and 64% respectively. Nationally, AfriForum assessed 132 landfill sites and transfer stations across all nine provinces. Only 30 facilities, representing 23%

Two murdered, one injured in shooting TWO people were killed and a third was injured in a shooting at a house in Nxanxadi Street, KwaNobuhle, Kariega, on Sunday, 25 October, at approximately 11:15. SAPS KwaNobuhle are investigating two cases of murder and one of attempted murder. According to SAPS spokesperson, Captain André Beetge, it is alleged that the victims were sitting outside in the yard of the house, consuming alcohol, when three unknown men entered the premises. “One of the suspects allegedly enquired about a cellphone, to which one of the victims responded that they had no knowledge of the cellphone,” he said. Beetge added that one of the suspects then allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire, fatally wounding a 25-year-old woman,

Siphesihle Matros, and a 23-year-old man, Siyamthanda Milani, both of whom sustained gunshot wounds to their heads. “A third victim, a 40-year-old woman, sustained a gunshot wound to her knee and was transported by ambulance to hospital for medical treatment,” Beetge said. “The three suspects fled the scene on foot and their whereabouts are currently unknown.” Beetge also stated that two cases of murder and one of attempted murder were opened and are being investigated by SAPS KwaNobuhle. Any person with information that could assist police with this investigation can contact the investigating officer at SAPS KwaNobuhle Detectives, Detective Captain Mbalane at 082 302 5954 or alternatively Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

of those audited, achieved a compliance score of at least 80%. According to the organisation, the findings point to widespread shortcomings in infrastructure, operational management and compliance with basic waste management requirements. AfriForum submitted its report to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in Pretoria earlier this month. The organisation said it would continue auditing municipal waste facilities annually and engage with authorities, industry stakeholders and communities on possible solutions. It also encouraged communities to participate in responsible waste management, recycling and local initiatives aimed at reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Responding to the findings, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya said the municipality acknowledged the concerns raised about its landfill sites and transfer stations but had not yet verified AfriForum’s findings and compliance scores. “While the Municipality has not yet verified the findings and compliance scores contained in AfriForum’s 2026 landfill audit, it is aware of the operational challenges experienced at some of its waste management facilities,” he said. Soyaya attributed these challenges to ageing infrastructure, vandalism and budgetary constraints, which he said affected the mainte-

nance, security and efficient operation of the facilities. He said the municipality had invested more than R15 million in improvements to its waste management facilities during the current financial year, with further investment planned for subsequent years. “Priority interventions include improving perimeter fencing and access control, acquiring additional fleet and upgrading infrastructure within the facilities,” he said. Soyaya added that the municipality was engaging with communities and exploring public-private partnerships to advance waste recycling. “These initiatives are aimed at improving waste management practices, strengthening operational efficiency and creating local economic opportunities,” he said. Asked how the municipality would address the specific shortcomings identified in the audit, Soyaya said the findings would first need to be assessed against its operational records and applicable compliance requirements. He said this process would help establish the deficiencies identified at each site and determine whether additional corrective measures were necessary. Soyaya said the municipality remained committed to improving the condition and management of its waste facilities through infrastructure upgrades, stronger security measures and other interventions aimed at improving compliance.

Despatch police seek help to identify body DESPATCH police are appealing to the public to help identify a man whose body was found near Sumcay gravel road in Perseverance, Despatch. According to Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, at approximately 12:40 on Tuesday, 13 October, police responded to a report of a body in bushes near the gravel road. A security guard who was patrolling the area showed officers where the body was. “The deceased is an unidentified African man, believed to be about 30 years old,” she said. “He was wearing a brown T-shirt, blue trousers, a blue long-sleeved jacket and white shoes. His left arm was covered

with a yellow Shoprite plastic bag,” Janse van Rensburg added. “Bruising was observed on his neck and upper body. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation. The suspect is unknown,” she said. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist detectives with the investigation is urged to contact the investigating officer at SAPS Despatch on 082 441 7820. “Information can also be reported anonymously via the SAPS Crime Stop number 086 001 0111 or through the MySAPS App,” Janse van Rensburg concluded.

KARIEGA:

Traffic lights remain broken after 17 months SHANTI JAFTA ONLY eight of Kariega’s 23 traffic light intersections are reportedly operational, raising concerns about road safety as the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) calls on municipalities to publish repair schedules for broken traffic lights and streetlights ahead of the 4 November local government elections. The AA has urged municipalities to publish lists of faulty lights, including fault reference numbers and repair dates, and to update these lists weekly. The organisation wants urgent repairs prioritised along routes to polling stations, schools and busy pedestrian corridors, warning that non-functional traffic signals and

streetlights place motorists and pedestrians at risk. In July, Daily Maverick reported that a Kariega businessman, Jevon Dyer, loaded about five broken traffic lights on to a trailer and offloaded them outside the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s customer care office. The report stated that the business owner grew tired of the dysfunctional lights in front of his business, having seen several accidents. A week later, the lights were reportedly still lying outside the municipal building. The AA added in its statement that days after his protest, the metro’s political head for roads and transport, Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga, told a council committee that the city could no longer justify repairing the same traffic lights because thieves stripped their

cables within weeks. On the M17, she said, thieves stripped the lights seven weeks after repairs. “We cannot afford to continuously repair the same traffic lights every three months due to repeated acts of vandalism,” she said. “It almost seems as though we are feeding the thieves each time we do repairs.” UD Express previously reported on the deteriorating traffic-light situation in Kariega in May 2025, when the NMBM acknowledged that non-functional traffic lights along Durban Street in Kariega Central had become a high-risk concern for motorists and pedestrians, especially primary school learners getting dropped off on the busy road. At the time, NMBM spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya attributed the repeated failures to vandalism and cable theft, claiming that the same infrastructure components were often targeted again within days or weeks of being repaired. “Despite our ongoing efforts to restore service, the same traffic light systems are routinely targeted, often within days or weeks of being repaired,” Soyaya said at the time. He added that the repeated damage was placing pressure on the municipality’s infrastructure repair and maintenance budget, with money being diverted to repair the same equipment rather than maintain and expand services elsewhere. At the time, Soyaya estimated that repairing and restoring the affected traffic lights on Durban Street and other areas in the metro would cost

between R400,000 and R600,000, including component replacement and additional protective measures. He also said the municipality was working with law enforcement agencies to address vandalism and theft, while community partnership programmes were being strengthened to help identify and prevent damage to public infrastructure. The municipality further indicated that SAPS members and traffic enforcement units would be deployed during peak traffic hours to manage safety risks at affected intersections. However, the current reported figures indicate that the problem remains a concern in Kariega, with 15 out of the 23 intersections reportedly not functioning. AA chief executive officer Bobby Ramagwede warned that non-functional traffic signals and streetlights increase risk for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly people travelling on foot. “The continuation of dysfunctional streetlights and dysfunctional traffic signalling mechanisms is going to result in heightened risk for both pedestrians and motorists,” Ramagwede said. He added that pedestrians often bear the greatest burden when traffic infrastructure fails. The AA has also highlighted the financial impact on motorists who are forced to wait at broken traffic lights, with idling vehicles consuming fuel while traffic moves slowly or not at all. The organisation advises motorists to treat non-functioning traffic

Pedestrians are encouraged to wear reflective or light-coloured clothing, carry a torch or use their phone’s light when walking in poorly lit areas, and walk facing oncoming traffic where there is no pavement. The AA also urged residents to report faulty lights to their municipalities and keep the relevant reference numbers. It says that municipalities should prioritise repairs based on risk, particularly on routes used by people travelling to polling stations.

Afri-Save CEO honoured as businessperson of the year ALULUTHO MADOLO THE Afri-Save Group Director and CEO, Munir Jeeva, was honoured with the Businessperson of the Year award at the Minara Chamber of Commerce Business Recognition Awards 2026 and Gala Dinner, held at the NMJ Conference Centre in Durban on Friday, 23 October. Jeeva, who leads the Nelson Mandela Baybased wholesale and retail group, said he was filled with gratitude when his name was announced. “I thought of my family, our Chairman Yusuf Jeeva, our team, and everyone who has supported Afri-Save along the way,” said Jeeva. He described the recognition as particularly meaningful because Afri-Save’s journey is rooted in Kariega and the wider Nelson Mandela Bay community, reflecting the dedication of the team and the continued support of the customers, suppliers and communities who had helped the business grow. “An award carries one person’s name, but

there are many people behind that achievement. I felt proud to represent our business and our community, and humbled that our work had been recognised on a national platform,” said Jeeva. “The award is a milestone, and it brings a responsibility to keep earning the trust that made it possible. Our customers should feel the benefit of our progress in their everyday dealings with Afri-Save,” he said. Jeeva brings more than 21 years of leadership in wholesale and retail to the role. “Building the business had required competitive buying, strong supplier relationships and earning customers' trust through consistent service. The challenge lay in balancing affordability with the costs of running and growing a sustainable business,” he said. He said the group has since grown into five Afri-Mart Supermarkets, serving both traders and households with more than 42,000 products. Its digital platform and free door-to-door delivery service throughout Nelson Mandela Bay form part of its commitment to convenient

and affordable shopping. The group employs about 120 people and delivers across a 500 km radius. “Wholesale serves traders and businesses, while supermarkets allow us to meet households’ everyday needs more directly. Growth must respond to what customers need and be supported by reliable service. The company’s promise of ‘Saving you the most’ remains central to how we approach the business,” Jeeva said. Jeeva credited the team of about 120 people as fundamental to everything the group does, from buyers and warehouse staff to drivers, shelf packers, cashiers, administrators and managers. “Behind every job was a household, which made building a stable, sustainable business especially meaningful.” Beyond its wholesale and retail operations, Afri-Save’s community work includes feeding initiatives, support for school tuckshops and blood donation drives. Jeeva said he would not single out one initiative above the others but acknowledged that feeding initiatives held particular meaning for him. “Food is such an immediate human need, and it is closely connected to the work we do every day. A meal can bring relief and restore a sense of dignity.” He believes businesses depend on their communities and should take an active interest in their wellbeing, beginning with providing honest value, treating customers and employees with respect, and creating dependable employment. “When households, schools and small businesses become stronger, the whole local economy benefits.” For Jeeva, the advice to a young entrepreneur in Nelson Mandela Bay is simply to build trust before chasing recognition. “There is no substitute for consistency. You can build something worthwhile from Nelson Mandela Bay; start by solving a real need and

Kariega author launches debut book to inspire a generation MARITA Meyer recently fulfilled a 30year dream by launching her debut book, Her Journey, at Cuyler Manor Museum in Kariega. The book shares a life story shaped by lessons, strength, pain and grace. Although she began writing during a difficult period on 31 May 2018, her dream was born in 1995 in a Grade 9 classroom at St Colmcille High School in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood). Through her story, she hopes to inspire young people never to abandon their dreams and to look towards a hopeful future, even in an uncertain world. Meyer said it all began when her Life Orientation teacher, Deidre Prince, asked the class what they wanted to become in life. Prince was not just a teacher who

taught a subject, Meyer said, but the kind who invests in a child’s wellbeing and makes you feel like you already have what it takes to make your dream come true. Because of a teacher like Prince, Meyer accomplished her dream of becoming someone who motivates others. At her book launch, Meyer said, “We live in a world obsessed with results, numbers, recognition and success. We often measure our worth by what we achieve and who applauds us. “Yet, amid the noise of seeking approval, we forget an essential truth: our true worth lies in our character. It reveals in how we treat others when no one is watching, in the kindness we show when there is nothing to gain, and in our courage to rise after a fall. Your worth has always been rooted in who you are.” She said that sometimes in life, one just needs to hear one person say they believe in your vision, and that when she heard that from Prince, something shifted within her. Meyer said that if that was how her teacher and God saw her, she would pursue that vision with passion. Today, Meyer hopes to encourage young people across South Africa and beyond. She believes that everyone has a unique journey and that what matters most is how one responds to it. After moving to Robert Sobukwe Town (formerly Graaff-Reinet) in 2024, she became aware of young people taking their own lives over four to five consecutive months. These tragedies broke her heart and motivated her to publish her story as a message of hope to a generation in crisis. Meyer noted that young people face high unemployment, uncertain prospects and an identity crisis, leaving many to struggle with self-belief, anxiety, depression and loneliness. She encourages them to develop a skill,

Her message is simple: “Whatever hardships you face, do not give up on life. Trust in the Almighty and believe that everything will be all right.” She described her book launch as a resounding success. “God’s hand was evident from beginning to end. All glory to Him; without Him, none of this would have been possible,” Meyer said. She ex-

Radio star’s wheelchair campaign comes full circle In July 2015, during a SPAR Wheelchair Wednesday activation organised by the Association for the Physically Disabled (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay, she was among a group of able-bodied people asked to perform tasks while seated in an assistive device. These included basic chores such as withdrawing cash from an ATM and shopping for groceries. The participants quickly understood that a simple act like reaching for an item on the top shelf of the food aisle was almost impossible. Four years later, Grootboom’s life changed when complications from a

tumour pressing against her spine left her unable to walk. Last Wednesday, she returned as keynote speaker as 200 wheelchairs were handed over to beneficiaries of the 2026 campaign, describing it as a “full-circle moment”. SPAR Eastern Cape has supported the initiative almost since its inception, with sponsorship manager Honey Koba praising every stakeholder for their commitment to the cause. “It is really special for us to be part of the 15th campaign. It is so much more than a number,” she said at the PE Golf Club in Gqeberha. “It represents years of people caring enough to get involved. It represents years of APD and its partners doing the difficult and often unseen work.” In her address, Grootboom said severe back pain and a strange sen-

sation in one foot led to a medical consultation that changed her life overnight. Doctors found it originated from a benign growth and that the condition was critical. “It was embarrassing, especially when I started losing control of my bladder and bowel functions,” Grootboom said. “We all thought these were post-partum symptoms that would eventually disappear. But they weren’t, and they never did.” She developed a bedsore accompanied by an allergic reaction that caused secondary trauma to her spine. The infection spread quickly, necessitating two procedures that produced a horrific wound. Within the lesion were two holes so severe that doctors could see her spine through one and intestines through the other. It would take almost two full years to heal, but, sadly, the paralysis remained. It took another three to make sense of her new reality and to find herself again, a period during which her mother became “my doctor, my nurse, my protector and my greatest advocate”. In truth, Grootboom admitted, she had been hiding from the world while processing everything she had lost: her ability to walk, her father to a violent crime and her marriage. The presenter, whose voice has been a staple on Bay FM, Umhlobo Wenene, Kaya FM, MPower FM and Algoa FM for over two decades, also felt tremendous shame. Yet, she remained on the air throughout, broadcasting from her bedroom as she continued to inspire those who tuned in every day. “I found strength in my ability to speak and knowing that I could still

PHOTOS: LEON HUGO be there for others who needed me.” She remembers the moment she found peace within herself as if it were yesterday. It took a simple message from a listener: “The fact that we can still hear you is a miracle”. Grootboom realised life was spiritual and that everyone needed to find their source, whether God or something else. “Your source gives you purpose and direction. It gives you answers and hope.” People with disabilities should never allow themselves to be left behind, she said. “With every new conversation, every new voice, something beautiful begins to happen. “It starts with a smile followed by laughter that comes from deep within your belly. It’s a new direction, a

new sense of purpose.” Grootboom told the audience that the devices, bought with funds raised by their corporate partners, could open doors to possibilities. APD’s Brian Bezuidenhout said the huge need for wheelchairs, especially among the poor, sparked the first Wheelchair Wednesday campaign all those years ago. He added that the organisation’s ongoing services helped move people through the door that Grootboom mentioned. “To every businessperson, to every sponsor, to every individual who has stood by us, we say thank you. Your loyalty, generosity and willingness to participate have helped turn a simple idea into a programme that is now changing lives.”

The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist announced the 2027 tour this week, revealing a schedule that will see him perform in seven South African cities in April before heading overseas for shows in May. Gqeberha fans will have the opportunity to see him perform on 10 April, following the opening South African show in KuGompo City on 9 April. The local date forms part of a seven-city run that also includes Knysna, Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Durban. The South African leg will feature British singer-songwriter Jake Isaac as a supporting act, while Canadian pop duo Neon Dreams will join Booshle G for the European and UK dates. The tour takes its name from his forthcoming album, Love is Free, scheduled for release in March 2027. It follows his debut album, I Was Never Alone, released in February 2026. Known for blending pop, folk and rock influences with personal storytelling, Booshle G has continued to build an international audience through his music. His single Take Me Home has surpassed six million streams, while his more recent release, MIRACLE, has gained radio airplay in South Africa. The announcement marks another step in his international career following his first headline tour of the United Kingdom and Europe earlier in 2026, which was reported as sold out. For audiences in the Eastern Cape, the Gqeberha performance offers an opportunity to see the musician perform at home before he takes the new album's message to international stages. General ticket sales will open tomorrow, 30 October. Tickets and further tour information will be available through his official website, www.booshleg.com.

Bergsig bult weer spiere in rugby HANNES SCHOEMAN DIE Bergsig Skool se rugbyspelers het tydens Spar se Metro-reeks weer behoorlik spiere gebult.

On Friday, 16 October, Grade 7 learners at Susannah Fourie Primary School attended a programme presented by the Dutch Reformed Church of Bothasrus, where speakers gave them guidance on building their identity in high school. They received ‘passport stamps’ representing essential values for their high school journey, including respect, communication, uniqueness, conflict resolution, empathy, self-love and active listening.
