THE fraud trial of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s DeputyExecutive Mayor, Gary van Niekerk, has been postponed for asecond consecutive day after the presiding magistrate fell ill.
The presiding magistrate has been bookedoff for the entire week.
Duringabrief appearance at the GqeberhaRegional Court on Tuesday, 19 May, the court was informed that Van Niekerk must appear at the Commercial Court on 2Junetoset anew trial date
Van Niekerk faces multiple charges, including allegedcontraventions of
the Cybercrimes Act and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
According tothe charges, Van Niekerk allegedly instructed Boqwana BurnsAttorneys(BBA)and McWilliams& Elliott Attorneys (MWE) to render legal services on two separate occasions in June and December 2022, while falsely representing himself as both acouncillor and Speaker of Council.
The legal services rendered amounted to more than R550 000.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality allegedly refused to settle the invoices, citing the absence of approval from the acting city manager at the time.
According to astatement issued by the Hawks, Van Niekerk allegedly authored and dispatched aletter to attorneysinGqeberha, misrepresenting himself as the Speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipal Council.
“He reportedly acted without lawful authority and purported to appoint the said law firm in matters relating to the declaration of vacancies of three NorthernAlliance Party proportional representation(PR) councillors,” the statement read.
Lastyear, Van Niekerk was found in contempt of courtafter failing to appear in court. He was fined R2,000 or, alternatively, faced direct imprisonment. He elected to pay the fine
MORE than adecade since the unbearable loss of Jayde Panayiotou, her familyis expected to come face-to-face once again withone of the men convicted in connection with her murderata parolehearing scheduledfor 27 May.
Zolani Sibeko, whowas convicted of conspiracy to commit murder forhis role in the 2015murder, is currentlyserving a 15-year prisonsentence
Family attorney, TaniaKoen, confirmed to the PE Express that thehearing had been rescheduledand thatJayde’s family would attend.
“Yes, the family will attend the parole hearing, whichhas been rescheduled to May27,” Koen said.
WhileKoen did not comment on whether the family would oppose parole, apetition launched last year by Jayde’s sister, Toni Bridgett, appeared to reflect the family’s stance on the early releaseofviolent offenders.
The petition, titled Justice without Compromise: No Parole for Convicted Violent Offenders, callsfor offenders convictedof crimes including murder, conspiracyto commitmurder and robbery with aggravating circumstancestoserve their full court-imposed sentences without parole.
According to the petition, earlyrelease for violentoffenders undermines public confidence in the justice system and fails to reflect the long-termimpact such crimeshave on victims and their families.
Sibeko became eligible for parole in 2025 after serving approximately eight years of his sentence.
Panayiotouwas abducted outside her Kabega Park home in Gqeberha on 21 April 2015 while waiting for transport to work. Her body was discovered later that day in KwaNobuhle, Kariega.
In August2017, the EasternCapeHigh Court in Gqeberha found her husband, Christopher Panayiotou, guilty of orchestrating her murder
Co-accused, Sinethemba Nenembe, was convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Sibeko was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.
During the trial, the State relied on cellphone records, location dataand witness testimony linking the accused to the planning and execution of the crime.
The court found that the evidence supported the State’scase and rejected the explanations providedbythe accused.

THE latest labour force statistics released by StatisticsSouthAfrica have triggered strong reactions from business and political organisations, with concerns mounting over rising unemployment, worsening poverty and the growing number of young SouthAfricans unable to find work.
According to the latest figures, SA’s officialunemployment rate increased from 31.4% to 32.7% during the first quarter of 2026, after more than 345,000 jobswere lost nationally Youth unemployment among people aged 15 to 34 now stands at approximately 45.8%.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, Denise van Huyssteen, said that Nelson Mandela Bay’s unemployment raterose from28.2% to 29.8% during thefirst quarter of 2026, despite the metro recording amodest increase of around 4,000 jobs quarter-on-quarter.
“We cannot build asustainable and inclusiveeconomy while nearly half of our young people remain unemployed. Youth unemployment is not only an economic issue; it is asocial crisis that impactsdignity, social cohesion and future growth prospects,” she said.
Van Huyssteen said long-term employment trends in Nelson Mandela Bay also remainconcerning, with the proportion of working-age residents who are employed declining from45.3% in 2015 to 39.8% in 2026.
She addedthat labour force participation in the metro has dropped from 67.6% to 56.7% over the same period, indicating thatmany people have become discouraged and disengaged from the economy.
The Chamber further highlighted that the Eastern Capelost 43,000 jobsinasinglequarter, contributing to aprovincial
unemployment rateof44.6%.
DA challenges municipal employment policies
Amid the growing unemployment crisis, the Democratic Alliance has intensified itscriticism of employment equity policies in the metro.
On 11 May, the DA held aprotest at the Gail Road municipal depot in Gqeberha and submitted amemorandum, with motions and questions relating to the municipality’s hiring practices.
DA Nelson Mandela Bay spokesperson for Corporate Services, Annette Lovemore, said the party is opposing the use of provincial demographic targets in municipal employment equityplanning, arguing that Nelson Mandela Bay’s population profile differs significantly from that of the Eastern Cape.
According to Census 2022 figures cited by the DA, Nelson Mandela Bay’s population consists of 62.7%black residents, 19.2% coloured residents, 15.7%whiteresidentsand 1.2% Asian or Indian residents.
EFF linksunemployment to povertyand inequality
The Economic Freedom Fighters responded to the latestlabour statistics, describing the unemployment figures as evidence of deepening poverty, hunger and economic collapse.
In astatement, the EFF said unemployment has remained above 30% for more than five consecutive years and warned that women and black youth in townships and rural communities continue to bear the heaviest burden of economic exclusion.
The EFF also linked unemployment to rising electricity tariffs, fuel prices, transport costs and food prices, arguing that millions of employed SouthAfricans are still unable to meet basic living costs.

AFTER adisastrous weekofbad weather and flooding, Afri-Save Cash&Carry’s CEO,Munir Jeeva, once again answered the call. Mobilising ateam of volunteers and gathering vital resources, he took to the townships around Kariegatodistribute foodand supplies to those affected.

Speaking to UD Express,Jeeva said that after hearing about the latest flooding, his immediate reaction wasthe same as it was on previous occasions; adeep sense of responsibility and urgency.
“It drives me to get personally involved, not out of obligation, butbecause our business operates on astrict ethos of giving backmore to the provincethan we take in. We are an essentialcommunity pillar, and when our people are hurting, we show up.”
He added that this time, the relief effort cametogether quickly because it was an extension of what they already do daily.

Jeeva confirmed that this initiative is not the first time the organisation has stepped in to assist the flood-affected residents of the area.
“Our commitment to the Eastern Cape is not sporadic; it is woveninto the dailyfabric of our lives and business operations,”hesaid.
“This deep-rooted philosophystems from aclear understanding that ourcompany’s growth is inextricably linkedtothe prosperity and well-being of the communities we serve.”
Jeevashared that for over 15 years, they havechampioned widespread, life-changing initiatives, which include:
Sustained food security: They drivea 15year daily feeding initiative, delivering
hotmeals every single day to childrenin disadvantagedareasacrossthe province to actively fightyouth hunger. “Thissustained effortruns alongsideour ongoing Food Parcel Drives, where we distribute hundredsofmassiveparcels designed to fully sustain afamily of fourtosix people for an entire month.”
