Tiere wen weer Classic Clash

FOTO: VERSKAF

Nqweba holding cells still condemned after eight years SHANTI JAFTA THE holding cells at Nqweba Police Station, formerly known as Kirkwood Police Station, have been condemned since 2018 and remain out of operation, with no firm timeline yet provided for their restoration. The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, confirmed that the holding cells were condemned by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) in 2018. McCarthy said a request for a condition assessment and cost analysis of the Nqweba station was sent to the DPWI in July 2026.

“The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, as the legal custodians of state property, is handling the procurement and appointment of specialised contractors,” he said. “Any operational adjustments to the repair timeline are subject to DPWI supply chain procedures.” The prolonged closure means detainees arrested in the Nqweba policing area must be transferred to neighbouring facilities, including SAPS Addo, which is more than 40km away. McCarthy said SAPS could not provide estimated costs associated with the transfers, citing security and operational considerations. “SAPS is not at liberty to divulge information on security and logistics, specific budgetary allocations and logistical expenditures regarding

tactical vehicle movements, fuel consumption, and individual prisoner escorts,” he said. He said routine transfers of detainees to neighbouring facilities such as Addo are managed within existing operational budgets and use rostered state vehicles. McCarthy said the transfers do not compromise local visible policing. Concerns were also raised about the security of detainees while they await transfer to Addo. McCarthy rejected any suggestion that detainees are left unsecured in the Community Service Centre (CSC). “SAPS categorically refutes any insinuation that detainees are kept unsecured in the Community Service Centre,” he said. “Detain-

ees are processed immediately upon arrest in strict compliance with the Criminal Procedure Act and the SAPS Constitution.” According to McCarthy, detainees awaiting transfer to fully compliant holding cells at neighbouring stations remain under constant armed police guard. “Their safety, human rights, and security are maintained under strict supervision according to National Detention Regulations,” he said. Despite the cells having been condemned for eight years, SAPS did not provide a specific date for when they are expected to return to operation. McCarthy claimed SAPS is working closely with the DPWI to expedite the completion of the project.

Convicted child murderer sentenced to two life sentences, three years SHANTI JAFTA A KARIEGA father with a previous domestic violence conviction has been sentenced by the Gqeberha High Court to two life terms plus three years for the rape and murder of eight-year-old Veronique May, with his conviction and sentencing coming during Women’s Month, placing renewed focus on violence against women and children in South Africa. The sentencing of Lelethu Nkosana (27) was postponed on Friday, 14 August to Monday, 17 August, as he had a headache on Friday, allegedly preventing him from being fully present during the court proceedings. Nkosana pleaded guilty to three charges, namely housebreaking with intent to rape and murder, rape, and murder. The kidnapping charge originally contained in the indictment was withdrawn by the State during the plea agreement. In his plea explanation, Nkosana admitted that he saw Veronique, who was known to him, while she was playing with other children and that he agreed to give her money if she accompanied him to the room of his relative. He admitted that when they arrived, he

Lelethu Nkosana (27) was arrested for the rape and murder of Veronique May (8).

realised the room was locked and formulated the intention to break down the door and enter. He further admitted that he undressed Veronique and sexually assaulted her without her consent. The plea agreement recorded that Nkosana acknowledged that he knew his actions were unlawful. In relation to the murder charge, Nkosana admitted that after the sexual assault, he became overwhelmed by shock and fear and decided to strangle Veronique until she became unresponsive. He further admitted that he knew strangling her would result in her death but proceeded despite knowing this. The plea agreement also records that Nkosana’s DNA was recovered during the medical examination of Veronique and from her clothing. His fingerprints were also found at the scene, according to the agreement. The agreement states that Nkosana (27) has no previous convictions. It records that he is unmarried and has a daughter (4) who lives with her mother. He had completed Grade 10 and did odd jobs to contribute towards his child’s maintenance, while also selling raw meat for a neighbour to earn an income. The court was also told that Nkosana acknowledged the seriousness of the offences and had allegedly shown remorse after realising what he had done. His guilty plea was presented as an expression of remorse and as having spared the State witnesses, particularly Veronique’s family, from having to testify and relive the traumatic events. However, the plea agreement also records that the circumstances of the case were considered so serious that the interests of society outweighed the accused’s personal circumstances. Nkosana accepted that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances that would allow the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences. The State and Nkosana’s legal representative, Mxolisi Moolman, agreed on a sentence of three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rape and murder, life imprisonment for rape, and life imprisonment for murder. The plea agreement states that Nkosana was informed that, after entering into the agreement in terms of Section 105A of the Criminal

Procedure Act, he could not appeal against the conviction and/or sentence imposed under the agreement. Speaking to UD Express, the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Mbulelo Grootboom, attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS), said he is happy with the conviction after the work he and his team did to investigate the matter. The court heard that even if Nkosana had not pleaded guilty, the State had overwhelming evidence that could produce a conviction. As convictions relating to rape are challenging to investigate, Grootboom said this win is thanks to the great help of the forensic team. “If any case is conducted correctly by those involved, it becomes easier to get a conviction,” he said. “When I arrested him, Nkosana was wearing the same clothes he wore when he killed the victim. We managed to swab the clothes and lift the DNA of the victim.” Grootboom was so determined to get a conviction that he placed a photo of Veronique on his desk to serve as a reminder to secure a conviction, not only for this case but also for all other matters of this nature he is investigating. “I do this to remind myself of the brutally murdered child’s family who deserves justice. I would follow up on all outstanding information related to the case to say that I have at least done something today. It is not easy to see the photo daily, as it reminds me of the crime scene I witnessed, but it keeps me motivated,” he said. He added that not only is he happy with the sentence imposed, but he welcomes the inclusion of Nkosana’s name in the National Sex Offenders’ Register. “To me, this conviction sends a serious message out there to the perpetrators of such gruesome acts.” Veronique’s mother, Destiny, told UD Express that although she wanted justice, namely the conviction of Nkosana, now that she has seen it, there is nothing that could make her forget the pain of losing her daughter. “As a woman in this [Women’s] month, I feel brave that I have made it out of this case, stronger than I was before. I am glad the sentencing happened this month, as a statement to remind those who would do something like this that justice will prevail.”

Fourie se teenstander was boonop swaarder as hy.

Female champion returns to inspire THE young woman who shattered a glass ceiling at the MIWA Junior Motor Mech Competition is heading back to Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, this time to guide others along the path she blazed. Tashne Wait made history last year as the first young woman to win the competition. On Saturday, 29 August, she returns to the school’s RMI Motor Mech & Alles-op-Wiele show as part of the judging and mentoring team, working with a new crop of entrants eager to test their skills. The annual event, one of the Eastern Cape’s largest showcases of automotive talent, pairs the junior competition with a car show featuring hundreds of classic and customised

vehicles, manufacturer displays, a craft market, food stalls and children’s entertainment. RMI Eastern Cape regional manager Peter van Mosseveld said the competition goes beyond spectacle, testing the same practical ability and problem-solving skills that technicians use daily in professional workshops. “Every year we see young people discovering just how rewarding a technical career can be. The competition tests practical ability, logical thinking and problem-solving under pressure, the same skills technicians use every day in professional workshops. Seeing last year’s winner return to mentor this year’s competi-

tors is exactly what this competition is about: inspiring the next generation,” he said. Lance Kettle, MIWA Eastern Cape representative, said Wait's return carries particular significance during Women’s Month. “She proved that talent, commitment and passion are what count in this industry. Her success has inspired many young women to consider careers they may never have thought possible, and having her back to encourage this year’s competitors makes the event even more special,” he said. For learners weighing career options, the show offers a chance to engage directly with industry professionals and explore training pathways across the retail motor sector, from diagnostics to workshop ownership. Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, one of South Africa’s oldest technical schools, continues to host the event as part of its longstanding commitment to developing skilled artisans. “The Motor Mech Competition continues to demonstrate the outstanding technical talent that exists among our young people. Whether learners go on to become technicians, diagnostic specialists, workshop owners or entrepreneurs, events like this help them see what is possible,” Kettle said. Entry is R75 for adults, R65 for pensioners and R35 for scholars, with children under 10 admitted free.

FORTY-two learners from 10 schools in Nelson Mandela Bay showcased 37 projects at this year’s Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, with 19 entries progressing to the regional stage, and the learners mentored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre (NMB STC) came away with an impressive haul of medals and special awards. The STC-supported group earned nine gold, four silver, and one bronze award, alongside three special category prizes. Iminathi Boyce, a Grade 10 learner at Phaphani Senior Secondary School, took Best Project in Earth Science for a study on the comparative efficacy of eucalyptus and black wattle biochar for grey water purification in informal settlements. Ayabonga Ndokweni, also in Grade 10 at Phaphani Senior Secondary School, won Best Project in Plant Science for a quantitative analysis of the xylem suction mechanism. Nathan Benadé, a Grade 9 learner at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, was awarded Best Junior Category Project for Mathematics for his investigation, titled “The Geometric Blueprint: Investigating the golden ratio connection between the great pyramid and the earth-moon system.” The NMB STC, which promotes participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) across the Bay, provided mentorship and research support to the learners throughout the process. The Centre’s outreach and education team, Pumza Tshebe, Zingisa Gono, Zanele Monki, an intern from the Human Science Research Council, guided the learners from project conception through to the regional competition. “We are incredibly proud of these learners and the hard work they put into their projects,” said Singathwa Poswa, Research, Innovation & Sustainability Manager at the STC. “Their success shows what’s possible when young people are given the tools, mentorship, and encouragement to explore STEMI subjects.” The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is a national science fair that gives learners the opportunity to present their own scientific investigations. It challenges them to identify real-world problems, conduct research, analyse data, develop solutions, and communicate their findings. As a partner of the Expo, the NMB STC is responsible for promoting participation among Bay schools, providing mentorship and research support, and hosting the district-level competition.

HANNES SCHOEMAN BOXING was the big winner at a women’s event hosted by the Thubalethu Club in KwaNobuhle. Mazizi Vumazonke, the club owner and South Africa’s best amateur judge and referee, said the event was a huge success. “The talent is just unbelievable. All we must do is to go out and search for more female boxers. We might just find a gold mine,” he said. Visiting clubs were Ringside Boxing Academy, Lifalethu Boxing Club and Phantom Killer Boxing Academy. Winners received gold medals, and all participants received gifts. Vumazonke also had an opportunity to talk to the boxers on boxing rules, safety in boxing and life skills. Siyamthanda Mathafeni from Thubalethu Boxing Club is a gold medalist and star of the future. “Make sure you write down this name,” he said. In one of the highlights of the event, Sesethu Lucas from Lifalethu Boxing Club was defeated by Alutha Mboya of Thubalethu Boxing Club in a fight that had the spectators on their feet throughout. Ingathi Mendu and Asive Makasi, who are both going to the Eastern Cape championship next month, also showed their skills at this event.
