OverR151millionallocatedtoKariega,Despatch,KwaNobuhle

RESIDENTSofKariega, Despatch and KwaNobuhleare set to see significant investment in roads, water, sanitation and electricity infrastructure after the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM)adopted what it describesasa pro-poor budget aimed squarely at communities facing the worst service delivery backlogs

The three communities, which fallunder the Zola Qini Cluster, havebeen allocated R151,226,010 underthe municipality’s ward-based infrastructure allocation programme, one of the largest cluster allocations in the Metro and aclear signal, said officials, that the needs of these areas are beingtaken seriously.

NMBM spokesperson SithembisoSoyaya saidinastatement that the allocation reflects adeliberate effort to channel resources where they areneeded most.

“Every allocationinthis budget has been guided by the principle that limited publicresourcesmust be directed towards communities with the greatest need and where investment will have the greatest impact on service delivery, economic inclusion and social development,” said Soyaya. “The Zola Qini Cluster, which includes Kariega, KwaNobuhle andDespatch, is among thepriority areas identified through our extensive public participation process. This allocation is a

direct response to what residents in those communities told us during IDP and budget engagements.”

The NMBM said the budgethas been shaped by years of recurring flooding events that have putimmense strain on alreadyageing infrastructure networks across the Metro, combined with longstandingbacklogsinmany townshipsand working-class areas.

Soyaya said residents in Kariega,KwaNobuhle and Despatch have borne the brunt of those challenges for too long “Wecannot ignorethe realities facing communities that continue to experience infrastructure backlogsand service delivery challenges. Thisbudget responds directly to those realities,” he said

The R151 million setaside forthe Zola Qini Clusterwillfund arangeofcritical projects, including:

• Pipeline replacement programmestoimprove waterreliability

• Upgradestowater andwastewatertreatment facilities

• Electricitysubstation improvementsand replacementofageing cables

Public lighting upgrades

• Road rehabilitation

• Stormwaterinfrastructureinterventions, particularly important given the repeated flood damageexperiencedacrossthe area in recent years

The statement addedthat the allocations did not emerge behind closed doors.

TheNMBM said thebudget was shaped through an extensive Integrated Development Plan(IDP) and Budget publicparticipation process that included engagements withresidents, ward committees, communitystakeholders and Ward Councillors acrossthe Metro Soyaya stressedthatwhat residents said duringthoseengagements is directly reflected in where themoney is going.

“Thisprocess ensured that the budget respondsdirectlytothe priorities identifiedbycommunitiesand reflects the realitiesexperienced by residents on theground. The people of Kariega, Despatch and KwaNobuhlemade theirvoices heard, and this budgetisthe municipality'sanswertothat.”

The Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, CouncillorBabalwa Lobishe, said thebudget is about more than spending figures, it is about fairness and long-term sustainability.

“Thisbudget reflectsour commitment to ensuringthat communities with the greatestinfrastructure needs receive the investment requiredtoimprove their quality of life.Itisa pro-poor budget that placesservice delivery at the centre of municipal planning whileensuring that theMunicipality remains financially

sound and sustainable,”said Lobishe. She acknowledged, however, that the real testlies in delivery.

“Our responsibilitynow is to ensure that theseallocations translate intovisible improvementsincommunities. Through strengthened oversight, improved project management and disciplined expenditure, we will worktoensure that infrastructure projects are delivered on time, withinbudget and to the benefit of residents.”

Soyaya said the municipality is aware that residentsinKariega, Despatch and KwaNobuhle have, in many instances, waited along time for meaningful infrastructure improvements, and that managing expectations honestly is part of its commitment to the communities.

“The success of thisbudget will ultimately be measured by the quality and pace of implementation. We are committed to ensuring that every rand allocated to thesecommunities delivers real, visible value, not just on paper, but in people’s daily lives.

“Residents wishing to track progress on infrastructure projects in theirwards or engage with the municipality on service delivery matters are encouraged to contact theirWard Councillors or reach out to the NMBM through itsofficial communication channels,”Soyaya concluded.

WHEN Kariega’s Natasha Meyer became a mother as ateenager, many people assumed herfuture was already decided. Society often tells teenage mothers that their opportunities are limited —but Natasha believed God had adifferent plan forher life.

Althoughbecoming amother atsuch a young age was frightening, she embraced the responsibilitywholeheartedly and alwaysregarded her daughter, Naqeesha Koester, as ablessing ratherthan aburden. Natasha told UD Express that motherhood motivated hertowork harder than ever. “As asingle mother, Ibecame determined to give my daughter agoodupbringing and astable future,” she said.

Over theyears, mother and daughter facedmany challenges together, yet those experiences only strengthened their bond and deepened their commitment to education. Natasha credits God for sustaining themand giving them the courage, determination and mental strength to push through.

She also expressedgratitude toNaqeesha for continually inspiringher and encouraging her to become abetter version of herself.Along the way, Natasha met her husband, Sherwin—whom she describes as the love of her life —and thanked him for his unwavering support, encouragement andlove during the momentsshe felt like giving up

It waswith that support behind her that Natasha made adecision that wouldchange the course of her life—she enrolled for a degree through UNISA,choosing to pursue tertiaryeducationwhilst raising Naqeesha. For many, juggling motherhood and studying wouldhave seemed an impossible task, but Natasha saw it as the only way forward.

“I knew that if Iwanted better for her, I had to do bettermyself,” she said. “Study-

ing wasn’t easy, but giving up was never an option.”

The family’s sacrifices extended to their four-year-old son, Shiloh, who patientlyacceptedthathis mom and sister often needed time tostudy, even when he sometimes felt left out. Natasha believes those sacrifices were well worth it, culminating in ashared achievement that fills the whole familywith pride.

On Friday, 12 June, Natasha and Naqeesha

graduated together at the ICC in KuGompo City with Honours degrees in Educational Leadership and Management throughUNISA.Natasha earned three distinctionsout of five subjects, whilst Naqeesha achieved fourdistinctions out of five andgraduated cum laude

Natasha said walking across the graduation stage alongsideher daughter felt “absolutely surreal”. She added, “I felt proud, butmost of all grateful forGod’sblessing

Reflecting on her family, Natasha said her husbandwas deeply proudofwhat they hadachieved.“He is extremely proud of ourdetermination to pull through, even when Iwantedtogiveupatsome point. He motivatedmetokeepgoing,”she said She alsospoke abouther son’s pride, noting that whilst he may notyet fully understandthe significance of themoment,he shares in thefamily’s joy.

Natashaaddedthatboth her parentshad passed away, andshe expressed aheartfelt wishthatthey could have witnessed the milestone. “I wish this could have happened whilst they were still alive, toshow them that with thehelpofGod Imadea success of my life, and that althoughthey were disappointed when Ihad her as a teen, we turned out okay,”she said She alsoreflectedonher difficult early yearsasa young mother, recallingthat her parentswere extremely strict. “I didn’t even have anything for her when Iwent to thehospital. It was acaseof: youare on yourown,” she said. She remembered receiving helpfromnurses whobrought her daughtera donateddress, and afriend whoprovidedclothes andblankets —later paying them off bitbybit. At onepoint, she hadtoborrowR50 just to buymedication for her baby.

Despite thosehardships, Natashasaid the experienceshiftedher outlook on life and giving. “Wewent from being on thereceiving end to being able to bless others,” she said She addedthatshe is nowgratefulfor her late parents, saying their strictupbringing taughther resilienceand faith.“Because of their tough love, they taughtmethat I cannotleanonthe armofman, but only on God. That’s where we both draw our strength from —being grounded andtrusting God in everything we do,” she said

Ek het reeds sedert my tienerjare saam met my ma tydens projekte uitgehelp,”vertel Chané.

Chané is ’n mooi voorbeeld daarvan,”sêsy.

(EWT) will be hosting astall at the23rd annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees beingheld at theSSK from26to28June 2026

The festival showcases the vibrant agriculture of the Sundays River Valley and surrounds, and is an annual drawcard for the EWT,aconservation organisation that worksclosely with farmers in the Eastern and Northern Cape in terms of vulture conservation through the expansion of theVulture Safe Zone and research and partnerships to minimise vulture and other bird collisions with power lines and wind turbines

We work across southern Africa and East Africa to restore habitats for wildlife, farmers and people so they are able to adapt to the im-

pacts of climate change. Part of this is the development of partnerships withfarmers through Biodiversity Stewardships to conserve portions of their landtoprotect threatened species, suchasamphibians, reptiles, birds and plants

The aim is to link the EWT’s landscapesfor thebenefitsofbiodiversity, andpeople

Wealso raise awarenessabout the use of Lead-free Bullets by hunterstominimise the impact on birdsof prey, especially vultures, that feed off carcasses of animals that containthe remnants of lead bullets, resultinginthe slowlead poisoning, and death, of nature’s clean-upcrews and, ultimately, controllers of diseases spreading. Additionally, wework closely with farmers and landownersto

develop carbon projects on their propertiestosequester carbon Carbon credits are generated through nature-based solutions such as restoringhabitats /ecosystems
