Raw sewage floods Gerald Smith yards, streets SHANTI JAFTA RESIDENTS of Gerald Smith, who say they have been living with raw sewage flowing through their yards and streets for months, have approached the UD Express after alleging that repeated reports to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and their ward councillor have failed to bring a lasting solution. During a walkabout with the Express, residents pointed out areas where sewage had accumulated, including pools containing what appeared to be faecal matter, while alleging that temporary repairs had repeatedly failed and that they had received no assistance or communication from their Ward 47 councillor, Lungile Langbooi. Tim Christoffels shared that he had reported the raw sewage leaking from the drain in front of his house two months ago. “Two months ago, I reported this drain to the water and sanitation department. The municipal officials only came to inspect the situation and said a water truck would come. No one arrived. “The sewage is so close to my house that it seeps in under the wall, and my dogs are there. What if they drink the sewage water and get sick?” Christoffels added that the open drain is a health and safety hazard not only to him and his family, but also to the neighbouring children. “If a child falls in there, who will be to blame?” he asked, stating that he reported the matter through the proper channels. “I cannot even open my win-

dows to get fresh air because of the strong smell. Even at night, I can smell it because my bedroom is next to this,” he said. Another resident, who is an informal plumber, explained the issue he experiences in his yard. “The main drain down the road is the issue. When the main drain blocks up, the water pushes up and clogs in my yard. What I do is I take an iron rod and push the blockage down just to relieve the flow, which happens every three

to four months. “So every three months, I have sewage in my yard. My conclusion is that these pipes have corroded and are dirty. That’s why the dirt pushes up constantly. In addition, I have not seen these pipes being serviced, so if that happens, perhaps the issue will be better.” His wife, who is an informal food vendor, shared that she has to cook food meant for the community with the stench emanating from her backyard, which is a health hazard. “I would love to make my place a sit-in, but because of the smell, the people have to buy the food and go, because who can eat with this smell? It is hurting my business too,” she said. The residents shared that they are cognisant of the fact that some may not have money for toilet paper, resulting in their using newspapers as a substitute, which could have contributed to the blockage, but criticise their ward councillor, who they claim is too far for them to see, for not communicating the issue to them. While they state that they ought to hold the municipality accountable for service delivery, residents also ought to be held accountable, should the illegal dumping worsen the blockage. They added that it does not excuse the long time they have had

to wait for assistance from officials. A community representative, Terry Harker, who has sewage flowing in front of his home, said that over the past few weeks, his yard and the walkway next to his house have been flooded, and when the place is flooded, the raw sewage dries up, creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment where children play. “This has been going on for three months now; I can’t even open my front or back door because the smell is too much. My wife has to cook food with that smell, which cannot be healthy,” he said. “I contacted all the people I could think of, the councillor, the environmental department, water and sanitation and even town rangers, but no one has helped me. I cannot live like this anymore.” Harker added, “We moved from Ward 48 to 47, which means we must take two taxis just to go to see our councillor, and two back. Where must that money come from, if sometimes we struggle to buy toilet paper?” Their ward councillor, Lungile Langbooi, was contacted on multiple occasions to provide comment, but upon being reminded on Friday, 7 August, he told the UD Express that he did not need a reminder for enquiries and that he was too busy to respond in the week he was given.

Suspect’s case postponed for plea deal talks SHANTI JAFTA THE suspect accused of the murder of Veronique May (8) recently appeared before the Gqeberha High Court on 6 August, where his matter was postponed for the finalisation of negotiations between the State and the defence. Arrested in the Kamesh precinct on 6 October 2025, Lelethu Nkosana faces charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder of a minor. The legal representative of Nkosana, Mxolisi Moolman, confirmed to the Express that they are currently in discussion with the State to determine wheth-

er Nkosana will plead guilty or not. Should he plead guilty to the charges against him, the next step will be the discussion of a plea deal. “All the investigations are complete, and if he had pleaded guilty today, then the matter would have been able to continue today,” he confirmed. According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, preliminary information indicates that the young victim was reported missing by her family on Sunday, 5 October 2025, at SAPS Kamesh after 17:00. “A search was immediately

launched by the police,” she said. “Information was obtained regarding who Veronique May (8) was last seen with on Sunday evening. SAPS Kamesh found the man and, for his own safety from the community, he was removed from the community to the police station.” Janse van Rensburg added that after the suspect was questioned yesterday, he took the investigating officer to De Booi Street, KwaLanga, where her lifeless body was found in one of the rooms on the premises. The accused has remained in custody until his next appearance today, on 13 August.

In response, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, claimed that it has identified a long-term engineering solution to address the recurring raw sewage spillages in the Gerald Smith area. “Following a technical assessment and site inspection, it has been established that the nature of the problem requires significant infrastructure intervention, including major excavation and road reconstruction works,” Soyaya said. “The scale of the intervention requires coordination between the relevant municipal directorates, as well as the allocation of both operational and capital budget resources.” Additionally, Soyaya said that as an immediate intervention, the Municipality is allegedly progressing with the necessary work to unlock and restore the affected sewer infrastructure. “This includes the construction of an access road to provide the required access to the sewer line and enable the Municipality to undertake the necessary remedial works safely and effectively,” he said. Soyaya added that the Municipality has also identified a more sustainable long-term solution to prevent the recurrence of the problem. This long-term solution, they said, “will involve the redesign and relocation of the affected sewer line away from the floodprone area,” adding that relocating the infrastructure will reduce its vulnerability to flooding and contribute towards improving the reliability and resilience of the sewer network in the area. “The Municipality acknowledges the impact that recurring sewage spillages have on residents and surrounding communities and understands the urgency of addressing the matter. The intervention is therefore being approached as both an immediate operational matter and a longer-term infrastructure solution,” he said. “The relevant municipal teams will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate the required interventions until the necessary infrastructure works have been completed.” The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality also claimed that it remains committed to providing reliable and sustainable municipal services and to implementing infrastructure solutions that address the root causes of service delivery challenges, rather than relying solely on temporary interventions.

MetroPolicegetsR10millionboost SHANTI JAFTA THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has allocated R10.7 million in the 2026/27 financial year for specialised vehicles for Metro Police, Traffic and Security Services. The allocation includes R2 million for two specialised tow trucks for Traffic Services, R2.2 million for Metro Police patrol vehicles, R3 million for an armoured personnel carrier for Metro Police and R3.5 million for Security Services patrol vehicles. According to the municipality, the investment is aimed at improving law enforcement visibility, response times, road safety, by-law enforcement and the protection of municipal infrastructure across Nelson Mandela Bay. The announcement comes after UD Express previously reported on concerns raised by the Democratic Alliance (DA) regarding the operational capacity of the municipality’s Metro Police fleet. During a DA media briefing, DA Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Retief Odendaal claimed that Metro Police was operating with only four operational vehicles, with the majority of a 22-vehicle fleet out of service awaiting repairs, parts and tyres. The municipality disputed these figures. Municipal spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya said Metro Police currently has a fleet of 50 vehicles, comprising trucks, light delivery vehicles, motorcycles, sedans and minibuses. “At present, 11 vehicles are operational, while the remaining vehicles are

undergoing repairs and maintenance at the municipal automotive garage,” said Soyaya. He said efforts were under way to return the fleet to full service. The DA had also raised concerns about the municipality’s fleet management system and the time taken to repair vehicles and obtain replacement parts. The municipality said the new investment forms part of its commitment to strengthening safety and security and follows the Cooperation Agreement signed between the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Eastern Cape Provincial Government and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on 27 September 2024. Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the municipality was demonstrating its commitment to safety and security through investment in its own law enforcement capacity. “These vehicles, including specialised vehicles, will significantly improve our visibility, which remains one of the strongest deterrents against crime,” said Lobishe. The municipality said the vehicles would enable Metro Police, Traffic and Security Services to improve their operational capacity, response times and enforcement activities across the metro. Soyaya said only two vehicles from the recently received fleet allocation were designated for the Metro Police Department. The municipality claimed it is also procuring the specialised vehicles as part of the R10.7 million allocation for the 2026/27 financial year.

R60 million programme targets potholes THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has launched a R60 million accelerated pothole repair and road maintenance programme aimed at addressing deteriorating roads and flood-related damage across the metro. The programme includes R30 million specifically allocated for pothole repairs, while the remaining R30 million will be used for other road maintenance work, including stormwater infrastructure, drainage improvements and the rehabilitation of flood-damaged roads. The programme was launched in Ward 30 on Monday, 3 August, where Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe joined municipal officials and contractors as repair work began in Veeplaas, KwaDwesi and the Perseverance Industrial Area. It is alleged that twelve contractors have been appointed and deployed across the metro, working alongside municipal road maintenance teams. The municipality said the work would be rolled out progressively, with areas experiencing severe pothole damage, deteriorating road conditions and flood damage being prioritised. The municipality added that its engineers and technical officials will oversee the work to ensure it complies with engineering standards. The municipality said the programme would also create local employment oppor-

tunities, with each contractor required to recruit three local workers from every ward where work is undertaken. Lobishe said the investment was intended to address both potholes and some of the infrastructure problems contributing to road deterioration. “Every day, thousands of our residents travel on these roads to get to work, school, healthcare facilities and places of business,” she said. “We understand the frustration that potholes cause and that is why we are acting decisively to accelerate repairs across Nelson Mandela Bay.” According to the municipality, the programme forms part of broader infrastructure recovery efforts following flood damage. More than R50 million was spent during the previous financial year on reconstructing two flood-damaged bridges, while further work is planned this financial year. Projects include the reconstruction of the collapsed William Moffett Expressway bridge, clearing and maintaining stormwater drainage systems, refurbishing damaged stormwater infrastructure and road marking projects in KwaDwesi, Despatch and KwaMagxaki. The municipality said residents would see repair work progressively increase across the metro as contractors and municipal teams are deployed to additional areas.

NMB given 60 days to tackle sewage pollution NELSON Mandela Bay's failing wastewater infrastructure is continuing to pollute rivers and beaches, according to a new report by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The SAHRC's investigation into wastewater pollution and recreational water quality found that ageing infrastructure, repeated pump station failures, sewage spills and inadequate maintenance have contributed to recurring contamination across the metro. One of the report's most concerning findings relates to New Brighton Beach, where water quality deteriorated dramatically within two weeks. Tests conducted on 16 March recorded E. coli levels of 4 360 MPN per 100 mL of water – more than eight times the recommended recreational guideline of 500 MPN per 100 mL. Enterococci levels also exceeded the recommended limit. Just two weeks earlier, E. coli levels at the same beach measured only 10 MPN per 100 mL, highlighting how rapidly water quality can change. Hobie Beach also exceeded the recommended E. coli guideline on the same day, recording 1 401 MPN per 100 mL – almost three times the recommended limit. The SAHRC also identified significant pollution in the Baakens River. A biological oxygen demand reading of 13.52 mg/L indicates a high level of organic pollution. Healthy rivers generally record readings below 2 mg/L, while elevated phosphate levels further pointed to sewage contamination. The Chatty River also raised concern. Testing found 84 000 total coliform bacteria per 100 mL, elevated enterococci levels and detectable lead concentrations. The Commission recommended ongoing heavy metals monitoring and an investigation into possible industrial sources of the

lead contamination. The report also documented repeated sewage-related beach closures during 2025. Brighton Beach remained closed for an extended period following sewage spills from the Fishwater Flats area, while Kings Beach experienced repeated closures because of sewer pipe failures, collapsing infrastructure and polluted stormwater flowing into the sea. Infrastructure vandalism further compounded the municipality's wastewater challenges. Information submitted by the municipality on 22 July also revealed significant vacancies in wastewater conveyance, treatment, maintenance and scientific services, while electricity interruptions continued to affect several pump stations. The SAHRC has instructed Nelson Mandela Bay to investigate pollution sources in the Baakens and Chatty rivers, expand water quality monitoring, prioritise New Brighton Beach for ongoing testing and assess whether enhanced monitoring is required at Hobie, Kings and Humewood beaches. It also instructed the municipality to improve public warnings when water quality poses a health risk, implement consequence management where officials or contractors fail to respond appropriately to sewage incidents, and submit a detailed implementation report within 60 days. “Plans and infrastructure projects are not proof of compliance. The test is whether wastewater systems consistently produce lawful results, prevent sewage from entering public water environments and protect communities,” the Commission said. It added that the report does not suggest every affected beach is permanently unsafe but rather demonstrates how quickly water quality can change and why sustained monitoring, prompt public communication and effective wastewater management are essential to protect the public.

Tiryville entrepreneur puts his community on the map SHANTI JAFTA

FOR Yaseen Jasat Mohammed, better known as Sasso Vlet, launching a dishwashing liquid brand is about much more than selling a household product.

Sasso Vlet named his product after the area he grew up in. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

The 31-year-old entrepreneur hopes his business will help rewrite the narrative surrounding Tiryville by showing that innovation, quality and entrepreneurship can emerge from a community that is too often associated with negative headlines. Operating under his registered company, Droom Solutions (Pty) Ltd, Mohammed recently launched his locally branded dishwashing liquid under the name TIRYVILLE, a deliberate decision to place his community at the forefront of the business. Every bottle carries the slogan ‘It takes a village’, a message he said reflects both his journey and the people who helped shape it. The product is currently available from a local shop at 103 – 105 Tuna Drive, Tiryville. “Tiryville is home. It’s where I was raised, where I learned resilience, and where I saw both the challenges and the incredible potential of our people,” he said. “Too often, communities like ours are only mentioned when something negative happens. I wanted to change that narrative.” By putting the suburb’s name on every bottle, Mohammed hopes to create a sense of pride while proving that successful businesses can be built locally. “I want people to see the

name and think about hope, entrepreneurship and quality. This brand is my way of honouring the community that helped shape me and proving that your circumstances don’t have to define your future.” Although the business appears new, Mohammed’s entrepreneurial journey began several years ago. Around five or six years ago, he started selling detergent in recycled two-litre Twizza bottles to residents in the community. While the venture never developed as he had hoped, the experience laid the foundation for what would eventually become TIRYVILLE. “It had been on my mind for a long time. Looking back, I don’t know if it was the timing or if I simply wasn’t ready yet. But even then, I knew I wanted to build something bigger,” he said. “Instead of focusing on what I didn’t have, I focused on what I could build. Today, seeing TIRYVILLE on professionally branded bottles is a reminder that every big dream starts somewhere, and I’m proud that this one started right here in my community.” Like many residents across Nelson Mandela Bay, Mohammed also experienced the impact of the metro’s prolonged water crisis. Rather than discouraging him, he said it reinforced the importance of creating products that offer genuine value while highlighting the role local businesses can play in supporting their communities. “The water crisis affected all of us. It reminded me that we often take

basic necessities for granted until they’re gone. It strengthened my belief that products should offer real value,” he said. “The experience also reinforced why local businesses matter. When we build businesses in our own communities, we’re not disconnected from people’s struggles, we live them too.” Building the business has not been without its challenges. Mohammed said financial constraints, sourcing bottles and labels, learning about manufacturing, and establishing a brand from scratch have all tested his determination. However, he sees each obstacle as another lesson on the road to success. “What keeps me going is my vision. I believe that if young people can see someone from their own neighbourhood building a legitimate brand, they’ll realise it’s possible for them too. I’m not just building a product, I’m trying to build belief.” While he has received encouraging feedback since launching, Mohammed admits he expected stronger support from within his own community. Instead, much of the early encouragement has come from people outside Tiryville. “The response has been mixed, to be honest. I expected more support from my own community, but I’ve actually received a lot of encouragement from people outside of Tiryville,” he said. “Many of them have congratulated me and told me they’re proud to see a brand carrying the name Tiryville.” He remains optimistic that per-

ceptions will change as the business grows. “My hope is that more people from my own community will see that this isn’t just about selling dishwashing liquid, it’s about proving that something professional and meaningful can come from Tiryville. For years, Tiryville has often made headlines for the wrong reasons. If TIRYVILLE can help change that narrative, even in a small way, then I’m already achieving something bigger than I imagined.” Looking ahead, Mohammed envisions TIRYVILLE becoming a recognised South African household brand, expanding into a full range of home and cleaning products while creating employment opportunities through Droom Solutions (Pty) Ltd. “If the brand creates jobs, inspires young entrepreneurs and changes the way people think about Tiryville, then I’ll know we’ve achieved something meaningful,” he said. “I want future generations to see that a nationally recognised brand can come from Tiryville, and that where you come from should be a source of pride, not a limitation.” His message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Start where you are, with what you have. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Many people wait until they have enough money or the perfect plan, but progress comes from taking the first step.” For more information, contact Sasso at droomcorporation@gmail.com or on 069 316 4707.

Fund lifts Kariega poultry farmers THE Imvaba Cooperative Fund has allocated funding to the Milani Macethe Poultry Production Primary Cooperative, a family-owned poultry producer in Kariega. The cooperative says the funding comprises R264,984 for infrastructure rehabilitation and R114,362.83 for processing and cold-chain equipment. Manager Thobeka Menze won the Department of Agriculture’s Women Entrepreneurship Award for Best Subsistence Producer in 2024, followed by the department's Best Poultry Producer Award in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality in 2026. The family began producing broilers on a small scale in 2002, alongside cattle and goat farming. Starting with 200 day-old chicks housed in a temporary brooder structure, the operation expanded over time. The cooperative now produces 1,500 broilers per production cycle. ECDC Assistant Manager for Financial Incentives and Business

Support, Fikile Mzinyati, says the funding was used to reconstruct poultry houses with capacity for 6,000 broilers, and to purchase 1,500 day-old chicks, poultry feed and processing equipment, including a poultry plucker, chest freezers, a digital scale and a packaging machine. Established in 2002, the cooperative is made up of five family members and operates on a 12-hectare farm in Rocklands Valley, Kariega. It supplies live and processed chickens to residents and local traders, and has created two permanent administrative jobs for women from the surrounding community. Menze says the cooperative is rebuilding after floods in 2022/23. Another Rocklands-based cooperative, Langbooi Sthathu Agricultural Primary Cooperative, received R263,332.75 from the Imvaba Cooperative Fund in April 2026. The funding was used to renovate broiler housing facilities, acquire processing machinery and equipment, and

purchase day-old chicks and poultry feed. The family-owned enterprise traces its origins to 2003 and is managed by five members of the Langbooi family: chairperson Ntombizanele Langbooi, deputy chairperson Ester Nobhelu Langbooi, secretary Nomthandazo Langbooi, treasurer Sinovuyo Langbooi, and organiser Letta Langbooi Runeli. The cooperative employs eight people, including the members. It produces approximately 1,440 broilers every four weeks, with facilities accommodating 1,500 birds per production cycle. Its poultry products are sold in 2 kg and 5 kg packs to local consumers and businesses, including the Yonayethu and Endaweni Tshisanyama in Kariega. Mzinyati says both cooperatives have received support through government agricultural development initiatives and follow biosecurity measures intended to maintain healthy flocks.

WOMEN’S MONTH:

Eleanor Douglas-Meyers launches first solo novel NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

trait that my mom and I share. People tell us everything. Complete strangers somehow end up sharing their life stories with us. One day we joked that someone was eventually going to tell us something they really shouldn’t, and that’s where the idea for Confession Collector was born. The book was originally written for a government-funded writing competition, but the funding was withdrawn and the competition was cancelled. “By then I’d completely fallen in love with Mira and the other characters, so I decided to publish it independently. My years in journalism definitely found their way into the novel. Journalists spend their lives collecting stories and in many ways, so does Mira.”

AFTER more than 20 years in journalism, Kariega-born Eleanor Douglas-Meyers has entered a new chapter in her storytelling career with Confession Collector, her third published book and first solo novel. The contemporary mystery follows Mira, a woman who finds that strangers often share their deepest secrets with her. The book was launched on 1 August at Enchanted Alchemy in Gqeberha, marking the start of Women’s Month, with the launch event selling out within four days. PE Express spoke to Douglas-Meyers about her journey from journalism to fiction, the inspiration behind Mira and why launching the book during Women’s Month was meaningful. For readers who may not know you, could you tell us a little about yourself and your career in journalism? “I’m Eleanor Douglas-Meyers and I’m a Kariega girl through and through. I still live in Kariega with my husband, Robin, and our son, Aidan. My parents also live right next door, which I absolutely love because we’re a very close family. “I studied Print and Broadcast Journalism at Nelson Mandela University, back when it was still PE Technikon and UPE. “I’ve somehow blinked and found myself with more than 20 years in journalism! I’ve worked for The Herald, Weekend Post,Algoa Sun,Careers Magazine and La Femme, before eventually starting 041Online, a digital magazine dedicated to telling the stories of Nelson Mandela Bay. “I’ve recently started working

Kariega-born author Eleanor Douglas-Meyers. as a self-publishing consultant. If there’s one thing that’s connected every chapter of my career, it’s storytelling. I’ve always believed everyone has a story worth telling.” Why was launching Confession Collector during Women’s Month particularly meaningful to you? “Women’s Month just felt like the right time. I feel like female characters in South African stories, particularly women of colour, are often defined by trauma. Those stories absolutely deserve

to exist, but I don’t think they should be the only stories we tell. “I wanted to write a woman who’s allowed to be curious, funny, intelligent, romantic and just wonderfully human. Someone whose life isn’t defined by what she’s survived. I hope Confession Collector reminds people that women of colour deserve whimsical stories, mysteries and happy moments too.” You have spoken about wanting to write women of colour as complex, joyful, curious and fully human char-

acters, rather than allowing trauma to define their stories. Why was this important to you and how is that reflected in the book? “I think representation is about more than simply seeing yourself in a book. It’s about seeing yourself in lots of different kinds of stories. I wanted Mira to just … exist. She’s funny, nosy, compassionate, flawed, curious and adventurous. She gets caught up in a mystery because that’s where the story takes her, not because trauma defines who she is. “Mira is loosely based on one

What was the publishing journey for Confession Collector and where can readers find a copy? “I independently published Confession Collector, which meant I got to wear all the hats — author, editor, project manager and marketer. Even the cover started as a picture of a sunset outside my house. “Going through the self-publishing process inspired me to start working as a self-publishing consultant, where I now help aspiring authors bring their own stories into the world. It feels like a lovely full-circle moment because, after spending my career telling other people’s stories, I now get to help others tell theirs too.” • The paperback is available through the Shop section of the 041Online website for R280, including nationwide postage. The eBook is also available worldwide on Amazon Kindle.

Wanneer sy uiteindelik alles verloor, ontdek sy by Miss Plessis se boarding house in Ka-

MBDA seeks experts for advisory panel THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) is inviting experienced professionals to join a voluntary advisory panel that will help identify and develop potential catalytic projects for Nelson Mandela Bay. The initiative is aimed at providing strategic direction for urban regeneration and investment promotion by bringing together professionals with expertise in areas including urban planning, property economics, infrastructure, investment promotion and design. According to the MBDA, the panel will meet over a three-month period to identify strategic precincts, assess redevelopment opportunities and develop mini master plans for selected areas. The process will also focus on developing a pipeline of capital projects that could attract investment, improve public spaces and contribute to the city’s economic development.

The agency said the panel’s work will focus on practical proposals rather than lengthy reports. Members will be expected to produce concise, visual presentations outlining development opportunities, possible funding strategies and implementation plans. The proposals will be presented to the MBDA and its partners to inform decisions on the feasibility and potential implementation of projects. The agency said the advisory panel is intended to draw on specialist expertise to ensure that proposed projects are both ambitious and realistic, while remaining aligned with municipal and national priorities. Professionals interested in joining the voluntary panel can submit a short motivation and CV to rsvp@mbda.co.za or contact the MBDA office on 041 811 8200.Applications close on Friday, 14 August 2026.

12 rekords vir Brandwag-ster Rudolph,Anna wen Despatch se rolbal

HANNES SCHOEMAN STERK, sterker, Brandwag!
