THE families of two missing men, Quinton “Doenas” Plaatjies and Loay Hisham Khayat, say they remain without answers years after theirdisappearances, accusing police of failing to properly investigate the cases and callingfor greater accountability in how missing personsinvestigations are handled in the Eastern Cape.
GeorginaSammy, Plaatjies’ sister, said her brother disappeared in October 2020 after his Ford EcoSport wasfound abandoned near atavern in Gqeberha. She said the family immediately launched searches across hospitals, mortuaries and surrounding areas, butfound no traceof him.
“It will be six yearsago thisOctober thathis case was reported,”Sammy said. “Wewent to Gqeberhafor two weeks. We searchedhospitals, mortuaries and everything we could.Nothing happened.”
Sammysaid the family has reflected on whether Quintonmay havebeen targeted because he was perceivedtohave money at the time.
She saidhehad previously been known to speakopenly about his finances in social settings.
“He used to go out and, when he was drinking, he would boast about his money,” she said.
Sammy said the family repeatedlyfollowed up withpolice and escalated their concerns overthe years, frustrated by what they described as limited progress in the investigation.
She also said thatafterher brother’s disappearance, the family discovered that more than R117,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account overtime.
According to Sammy, the case wasinitiallytreated as amissing persons investigation and later escalated through various police structures as the family continued to push for updates. She said they eventually sought national-level engagementthrough escalation processes, including contact withspecialised police units.
Sammy said the most significant development in the case came after she was contacted by Allison Khayat, whosehusband, Loay HishamKhayat, went missing in 2025
Khayat said she reachedout after seeing similaritiesbetween thecircumstances surrounding theircases.
“I saw the posts and Ireached out because Ifelt there were similarities in what we were experiencing,” she said.
Asecond family’s nightmare
Allison saidher husband’sdisappearance followed aperiod of marital difficulties, during which he was staying at aguesthouse. She said he waslastseen on 15 August 2025 and had been in con-

tact with family membersshortly before his disappearance. “Hislast online was 18:33,”she said.“According to policefootagefrom the guesthouse, Loay leftthe premises at about 18:35 wearing his pyjamas. He left on hismotorbike.”
She said Khayat had also spoken to family members about plans involving the sale of his vehicle, and that concerns only arose when he suddenly stoppedcommunicating. “On 15 August hissister from Miami contacted me because hisphone was off. His business friend also contacted me. We immediately knew something was wrong,” she said.
Allison saidinconsistencies emerged when the guesthouse owner provided explanations about his movements and the vehicle. “She told us Loay sold the car and went to Gqeberha, butlater her storychanged,” Allison said.“We have voice notes from those conversations.”
Allison addedthat she reported Loay missing at apolice station in Kariegaand later provided investigators with bank statements showing irregularities. “On 18 August Igot his bankstatements and they showedirregularities in his account,” she said
Khayat saidthe investigation later shifted from amissing persons case to akidnapping investigation. Allison said she raised concerns with policeaboutindividuals Loay had been introduced to at the guesthouse.
“I told them everything Loay told me about beingintroduced to aman named
Donovan Williams who alsostayedatthe guesthouse,” she said.
She also alleged that documentslinked to avehicle transfer were completed without Loay’s presence and that signatures were forged. She said shebelieved some of the documentation used was among itemspreviously reported as missing.
“The transfer was donewithout him being present at the policestation. Hissignature was forged,” she said Allison added that she questioned inconsistencies in the handlingofLoay’s belongingsafter his disappearance, claiming that some items later went missing “If his belongingswere safe in hisroom, how didsome of hisitems go missing?” she said
She added that she was laterinformed that Loay’s bank cardhad allegedly been found in the possession of an individual linked to the investigation.
Allison said she believedseveral individuals linked to the guesthouse might haveheld answersaboutwhathappened to her husband. She also claimed that she was informed by an investigating officer that the matter may be linked to other cases under review. “I was told my case is linked to 11 other cases anditisina sensitivestage,” she said.
She added that she has repeatedly requested updates and engaged private investigative support in an efforttoassist with the case, and said she believed certain individuals werenot properly questioned during the early stagesofthe investigation.
Allison described her husbandasfamily-oriented and said his disappearance has had asevere emotional impact on their children. “Our childrenmiss their father,” she said.“Life is very hardwithout him.”

“No further information is available at this stage.
“KwaNobuhle SAPS furtherappealed to communitymembers to report damagedinfrastructure, includingexposed electrical wiring, vandalised streetlight polesand incidents of coppercabletheft, to the relevant authorities without delay.”

“Exposed live wirescan result in serious injuriesorfatalitiesand havea significant impact on thesafetyand
consequences are severe, andthe damage caused affectsentire communities,”he said.
Soyaya statedthatresidents who witnessactsofvandalism, cable theft, or suspicious activity around municipal infrastructure are encouraged to report the matter immediatelytothe SouthAfrican Police Service,Municipal Law Enforcement, Metro Police, or theMunicipality’s customer care andfaultreporting channels.

RESIDENTS of Tiryville in Kariega continue to experience intermittent watersupplydespite both municipal interventionsand private assistance aimedateasingthe ongoing crisis.
In its latest update on 9June 2026, the NelsonMandela BayMunicipality confirmed that while most water supply issuesacross the metro have been resolved, Kamesh,Tiryville and Lapland remain affected.
The municipality attributed the disruptions to high turbidity levels at the NooitgedachtWater Treatment Works, which are limitingthe system’sability to increase waterflow without compromising water quality. Additionalrepair work at theKabah Water Treatment Works is also underway and is expectedtoimprove supplyovertime.
To mitigate the impact on affectedareas, the municipality said additionalwatertankers have been deployed to Kamesh,Tiryville and Lapland. Aplanned water shutdown scheduled for 23 June is also expected to place further strain on already affected communities Alongside municipal efforts, Afri-SaveCash &Carry (Pty) Ltd has provided three water storage tanks to the Tiryvillecommunity on atemporary loan basis followinga requestfor assistance submitted by community representative,JennikerDolf.
Explaining why the community approached Afri-Save, Jenniker said the companywas seen as akey local business involved in community upliftment. “We approached Afri-Savebecause it is one of our biggest companiesthatuplift ourcommunities. The owners of Afri-Save, the Jeevafamily, have consistently shown willingness to assist communitiesinneed, and they arealsointhe process of starting asoupkitchen in Tiryville,” he said.

He added that the request forassistancecame as aresultofthe prolonged water shortages in the area. “Asthe Tiryville community, we approachedAfri-Save to ask forassistance in providingwater tanks and drinking water, and Munir andhis brother Joseph Jeeva provided thecommunity with three water tanks with a capacity of 25,000 litres of clean drinking water, withdeliveries planned twice aweek,” Jennikersaid. Accordingtohim, the tanks will be placed acrossthe community to improve access for vulnerable residents. “Those tanks will be put
throughout our community where our elderly people can haveaccess to cleanwater, and each household will getatleast 20 litresofdrinking water,”hesaid.
Jenniker also acknowledgedthe municipality’s ongoing efforts to manage the broader crisis. “We understand the problems our municipality is facing with fixing the issues concerning our water, and we alsothank the municipality forproviding drinking water as there are many communities who need assistance. We know they are trying their bestto assist us,” he said.

’n Nuweling, Bonisiwe Kamanga, gaan haar eerste Comades aandurf.
