Public Protector asked to probe

A City of Cape Town official demonstrates one of the specialised drones used by law enforcement and metro police as surveillance support in fighting crime to visitors at the annual Killarney Motor Show. Thousands of Capetonians flocked to Killarney Raceway on Sunday 1 November for what is believed to be the biggest motor show in the Western Cape. The show once again offered visitors a range of old, new, unique and racing cars on display, with non-stop action and thrilling displays of drifting, spinning, off-road action, public karting, displays, stunts and more, as well as live music and entertainment for the whole family, fuelled by a mouth-watering variety of fine foods and beverages on offer. The party has lodged an official complaint with the Public Protector calling for an independent investigation into the City of Cape Town's Municipal Planning Tribunal (MPT), its amended appointment and reappointment provisions, and concerns about planning decisions affecting communities across the city. The complaint asks the Public Protector to examine whether the City has acted lawfully,

It raises questions about the 2025 amendments to the City's Municipal Planning By-law, the tenure of tribunal members, the consideration of public objections, and the City's handling of selected development and enforcement matters. SAHRC takes City to court over property sales DESIRÉE RORKE
T
DESIREE.RORKE@TYGERBURGER.CO.ZA
he South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has taken the City of Cape Town to the Western Cape High Court in a bid to block the transfer of 49 municipal properties sold at public auction in February pending a review of the City’s decision to dispose of them. The sites up for transfer span communities across the city, with properties in Mitchells Plain, Maitland, Goodwood, Kraaifontein, Somerset West and Durbanville among those caught up in the court challenge. It also includes the Good Hope Centre. The litigation follows the SAHRC’s intervention in February, when it raised concerns about the sale of municipal properties against the background of Cape Town’s shortage of affordable housing and persistent spatial inequality. In a statement to the media, the commission said it questioned whether the City had properly considered the potential of the properties to contribute to affordable and social housing before offering them for sale. “The commission was particularly concerned that the proposed disposals were not subject to legally enforceable conditions requiring purchasers to provide affordable or social housing. It also questioned the adequacy of the public participation processes relied upon by the City, some of which dated back to 2010.” “In February, the commission met with executive mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, to raise the concerns, and to subsequently request that the auction be postponed to allow for further engagement and proper consideration of the constitutional implications of the disposals. The City declined the request, and the auction proceeded. However, the commission continued to engage the City, including the speaker of council, regarding its concerns.” “[It is therefore that] the commission seeks an interim interdict preventing the City from transferring the disputed properties or taking further steps to implement the disposal decisions pending the determination of the review, as well as an order requiring the preservation of records relevant to the decisions,” the statement read. The commission further seeks an order declaring the disputed decisions unconstitutional, unlawful, irrational and invalid, reviewing and setting them aside, and referring the matter back to the City for reconsideration. It contends that the decisions failed to comply with constitutional and statutory obligations concerning housing, spatial justice, public participation and the disposal of municipal assets. “Public land is a finite resource, and its disposal has lasting consequences for the residents of Cape Town. The commission seeks to ensure that decisions concerning
“It appears more like electioneering coming a week before elections.” - Geordin Hill-Lewis the disposal of municipal properties consider the urgent need for affordable housing and the constitutional imperative to address South Africa’s enduring spatial inequalities, thereby serving a legitimate governmental purpose,” the commission stated. CAPE TOWN MAYOR PUSHES BACK In response, Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the SAHRC is behaving like a political party, not a credible Chapter 9 organisation. “This interdict attempt comes some six months after the SAHRC’s initial enquiries were addressed by the City,” the mayor said. “It appears more like electioneering coming a week before elections, and many months or even years after these individual sites have been through extensive land release processes, including public participation.” He further stated that the SAHRC made no objections then, nor has it made any similar objections to land release in other cities. “If they want to throw away their credibility trying to stop any policy differentiation that delivers better public outcomes in Cape Town, fine, but we will oppose them vigorously. “While the SAHRC claims its interdict application is affordable housingrelated, the 49 sites do in fact include 28 residential-zoned properties to serve the local demand for housing in various areas,” he said, adding that commercial and industrial opportunities were similarly available during the transparent public auction process and aimed at creating employment and economic activity. The City pushed back against criticism of its affordable housing track record, pointing to 14 sites already released for that purpose, including six in the inner city, producing a total of 7 000 residential units. Of those, 4 000 are earmarked as affordable housing and 2 500 as social housing, the City stated. The City stated that a further 39 sites are in the release pipeline, 11 of them in the CBD, with a projected combined yield of 40 000 units. That figure includes 21 000 affordable housing units and 1 500 social housing units. The City also pointed to completed, fully tenanted projects: more than 200 social rental units at Maitland Mews in the inner city, over 1 000 units at Goodwood Station, and more than 400 at Bothasig Gardens. According to the City, its human settlements department has delivered 12 401 units to residents over the past five years and maintains roughly 50 000 council flats at an annual cost of R977 million without any state grant funding.

‘CT tap water of excellent quality’– City of CT report Cape Town’s tap water continues to meet an excellent standard of drinking water quality, according to the latest annual report from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate. The report, which covers the period 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, provides a detailed overview of water quality across the city’s supply systems. Results are measured against the South African National Standard for drinking water (SANS 241:2015), which sets requirements for assessing drinking water quality and its suitability for human consumption. Cape Town’s municipal drinking water supply passed the assessments across the applicable water quality criteria. Samples were collected from all 11 water supply systems, with the analysis covering physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. An extensive monitoring programme tracks water quality from treatment plants through the network of reservoirs and pipelines supplying communities across the city. HOW DRINKING WATER QUALITY IS MONITORED Water from dams is purified at 12 water treatment plants. Each plant has an on-site laboratory where drinking water is tested every two hours, every day of the year. About 200 drinking water samples are collected weekly at various sampling points. Water quality is monitored by the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s Scientific Services teams as water flows through the 10 800 km network of pumps, reservoirs and pipelines to reach taps. Mayco member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien said maintaining excellent drinking-water quality required consistent leadership, skilled people and sustained investment across the entire water-supply system. “These results reflect the work of hundreds of staff who treat, test and

monitor Cape Town’s water every day, from our treatment plants to residents’ taps.” The City’s responsibility was not only to maintain the standards achieved but to strengthen the resilience of the system for the future, he said. As the city grows and climate pressures increase the City would continue investing in modern treatment processes, scientific monitoring, infrastructure maintenance and the skills needed to protect the quality and security of Cape Town’s drinking water. “Transparent reporting remains central to this approach,” Badroodien said. “Public confidence must be supported by credible scientific evidence and open access to information.” He encouraged residents to read the annual report and familiarise themselves with the results. The annual report and quarterly tap water quality reports are available at www.capetown. gov.za/waterquality.

SILVER AWARD: COMPASSIONATE NURSING LEADERSHIP AT TYGERBERG HOSPITAL Since joining Ward G4 at Tygerberg Hospital in March 2025, operational manager Katherine Barry has introduced several initiatives to strengthen patient safety, clinical governance, staff development and continuity of care. Among these is Back to the Floor Friday, where she works alongside different shifts to identify opportunities for improvement and support staff in addressing challenges. Her Thursday Tea with Parents initiative creates space for families of long-stay patients to share their experiences, receive support and become more involved in their loved ones’ care, the department said.

An evening that touches hearts
T
he Daniel and Friends Fund’s annual gala is a celebration of compassion, extraordinary stories and unforgettable experiences — all in support of children facing life’s greatest challenges. On Friday 20 November, the organisation will host its annual Touching the Heart Gala at Eensgezind Function Venue outside Durbanville. “The evening of exceptional entertainment, a few surprises, and an opportunity for guests to celebrate the end of the year while making a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable children,” says director Kate Laurie. THE STORIES BEHIND TOUCHING THE HEART For many years, the Daniel and Friends Fund has worked closely with children and families navigating the extraordinary challenges of chronic illnesses, rare diseases, disabilities and complex medical conditions. Through this involvement, the organisation has witnessed remarkable stories of courage that have to be heard and remembered. The Touching the Heart initiative was born from a desire to give these children and their families a voice, creating a platform through which their personal journeys could be shared with the wider community. At the heart of the project is a unique photographic book, featuring the exceptional work of photographer Candice Rodrigues. Through her lens, the project captures far more than photographs. It reveals the personalities, strength, beauty and individuality of children whose lives are often defined by their medical challenges. “The book aims to inspire awareness, understanding and compassion, while also providing an opportunity for the public to contribute directly to the cause,” says Laurie. “Supporters can purchase the photographic book or commission

One Young World Summit draws global leaders to CT Several influential guests from Africa and around the world are in attendance at this year’s One Young World Summit in Cape Town, including former Public Protector Prof Thuli Madonsela, Mozambican politician, humanitarian and wife of former president Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, and human rights lawyer, antiapartheid activist and writer Justice Albie Sachs. The summit, which marks its return to Africa for the first time since Johannesburg hosted it in 2013, takes place until Friday 6 November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. According to its website, several wellknown international guests are also in attendance, including actors Terry Crews, Gillian Anderson, Forest Whitaker and Nomzamo Mbatha. series of special programmes will be held to honour the legacy and contributions of young people in the struggle for freedom, the statement reads. Unlocking Africa’s potential will be a central theme of this year’s summit, with delegates from across the continent coming together to showcase the innovation and growth potential of African youth, it continues. estate. A selection of vintage wines will also be available for tasting, offering guests a rare opportunity to discover the ageing potential of Alto’s red wines. “While the entertainment and experiences promise a spectacular evening, the true purpose of the Touching the Heart Gala remains fundraising,” says Laurie. “One of the most important highlights of the event is its charity auction, which provides guests with an opportunity to bid on a selection of items and experiences, knowing that their contributions will help support the work of the Daniel and Friends Fund.” The auction plays a vital role in generating funds for projects that make a tangible difference in the lives of children
and families who need support. The organisation is PBO registered and 18A certificates can thus be issued. “The Touching the Heart Gala this year offers businesses a unique opportunity to combine their year-end celebrations with a meaningful contribution to the community. Companies can reserve tables for their teams, entertain clients or celebrate the year’s achievements while supporting a cause that extends far beyond the evening itself,” says Laurie. “Individual tickets are also available for those who wish to attend. Above all, the gala is a celebration of the extraordinary children and families who inspire the Daniel and Friends Fund’s work every day,” says Laurie. Contact Lianie le Roux at 076 331 8474.
FROM PAGE 1 When decisions affect their homes, neighbourhoods, property rights and environment, they have every right to expect a fair process and proper accountability.” "We have lodged this complaint because serious questions need answers. The City cannot expect residents to accept controversial decisions without scrutiny, particularly when the rules governing the tribunal itself have been amended. "We are asking the Public Protector to examine the evidence, obtain the relevant records and establish whether the City has complied with the law. If the City has acted properly, it should welcome that scrutiny. “If maladministration or unlawful conduct has occurred, there must be consequences." A central issue in the complaint is the City's 2025 amendment to its Municipal Planning By-law, including provisions dealing with the terms of office and reappointment of MPT members. Tribunal members' terms are now no longer limited.
meaningfully considered, whether the applicable rules are being followed, or whether the system gives sufficient weight to the public interest. When concerns arise, the answer cannot simply be that the tribunal has made its decision and everyone must move on. Public institutions must be able to explain and defend their decisions." The party said it recognised that a tribunal agreeing with municipal planning officials does not, on its own, prove bias or wrongdoing. The complaint thus seeks an independent assessment of the relevant records, procedures and legal questions rather than treating allegations as established facts.
CONTENTIOUS DEVELOPMENTS FLAGGED The party wants the legality of these provisions assessed against the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA), including the statutory framework governing tribunal membership and terms of service. The complaint raises questions about how objections regarding the aforementioned developments were considered, how decisions are justified and whether municipal procedures adequately protect the interests of affected residents. Bodin said it is not about opposing development for its own sake, but rather whether development decisions are lawful, properly motivated and fair to the people who must live with their consequences. "Residents should not have to wonder whether their objections have been
.
RESIDENTS MUST NOT BE LEFT OUT OF THE PROCESS Bodin said the issue extends beyond individual developments. It concerns public confidence in the City's planning system and the accountability of those entrusted with decisions that shape Cape Town's future. "Residents invest in their properties, support local businesses and contribute through municipal rates and charges. They should not be expected to carry the consequences of planning decisions without a transparent process and meaningful opportunities to raise concerns." The complaint asks the Public Protector to consider the matters falling within its jurisdiction, examine relevant municipal and council records, assess the legal basis for the by-law amendments and appointment decisions, and determine whether further investigation or remedial action is warranted. "We are seeking answers, not a predetermined verdict. “Any findings must follow a proper investigation and consideration of the evidence. Residents pay their rates. They live with the consequences. They deserve answers."

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH THE THINGS THAT MAKE CAPE TOWN SPECIAL: MUSIC, CULTURE, CREATIVITY AND OUR INCREDIBLE TALENT
Radio personality Tyrone Paulsen and award-winning comedian Dalin Oliver will guide audiences through the programme as MCs. BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER The City's Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the event is about more than ushering in the festive season. "It is also about bringing people together through the things that make Cape Town special: our music, our culture, our creativity and our incredible talent," he said. This year's line-up is promising something for everyone, from established stars to homegrown performers who continue to put the city on the map. The City looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors to share in the excitement as Cape Town kicks off the festive season, Smith said. MOVE WITH MELODY DANCE COMPETITION The Festive Lights Switch-On's annual dance competition, Move with Melody, gives dancers a chance to perform at one of the city's most anticipated events. Ten dance crews will compete at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre on Saturday 21 November. The top three will be selected to perform on the main stage. Entries are open until Monday 9 November. Dancers can enter through the Festive Lights Switch-On social media platforms by posting a video entry and tagging @CTfestivelights with the hashtag #FLSODance2026 on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook, or by sending their entry via WhatsApp to 076 179 7047.

estern Cape Premier Alan Winde has hailed the province's economic record, telling the annual Tygerberg Business Chamber dinner that the province's growth for jobs strategy is delivering results, with nearly 90% of all new net jobs created in South Africa over the past five years coming from the Western Cape alone. Winde was addressing members of the Cape Town business community gathered for the chamber's annual dinner in Durbanville, where he outlined the province's achievements over the past financial year. Winde said the province had just launched its 2025/2026 Record of Delivery, a comprehensive stocktake of government achievements over the past financial year. "While this document is holistic and transversal in nature, every programme, policy and strategy of our government circles back to our top priorities: growing the province's economy to keep creating jobs; and equipping our residents with the skills and opportunities they need to get those jobs, while also working to make our communities safer and more prosperous." With an unemployment rate below 20%, the premier said the guiding jobs strategy was working. He pointed to business confidence as further evidence, noting the Western Cape was the only province in the 2025/26 financial year to record positive gains, increasing by five points. Winde said efforts to create an ecosystem where business felt welcome started at grassroots level, supporting small businesses. In the province over the 2025/26 financial year, 574 businesses benefitted from provincial support, including 279 black-owned, 167 womenowned, 71 youth-owned and seven owned by persons with disabilities. WESTERN CAPE NOT AN ISLAND The premier said the province remained an attractive and safe investment destination, with investment commitments of R23.13 billion recorded over 2025/26 through Wesgro and the Atlantis Special Economic Zone. "But our economic successes are certainly no happy accident;
“remained an attractive and safe investment destination... - Alan Winde they are the result of hard work and dogged commitment to clean governance across our government," Winde said. All departments and public entities achieved unqualified audits for a third consecutive year in 2025, while 25 of the province's 30 municipalities achieved unqualified audits, including 20 clean audits. "Up and down the provincial and local government spheres we are tangibly demonstrating that your taxes are being spent responsibly, in service of you and our economy," he said. Winde said economic policies were also directed at empowerment, with around R7.5 billion, or 34.6% of Western Cape government procurement expenditure, going to women-owned businesses, exceeding the national target of 30%. "But amid these gains, we know there is much more we still need to do," he said. "As much as we are focusing on ensuring that this province continues to lead from the front, the Western Cape is not an island. It is my fervent wish to replicate our successes nationally, to take the rest of South Africa forward." Winde referenced an initiative led by Business Leadership South Africa tracking structural reforms in real time across the country's most important economic indicators. He said South Africa had made meaningful progress, with the latest reform completion index reaching a high of 72.5 in the third quarter, up from 71.3 in the previous quarter and a 28.4% increase from the March 2024 baseline. ECONOMIC REFORMS CENTRAL "Priorities must include addressing structural constraints that hold back investment, improving the efficiency and reliability of essential infrastructure, and creating a more competitive environment for businesses to expand and employ more people," he said. Winde said the recent decline in governance highlighted the need to strengthen accountability.
The Little Optimist Trust & Sailing Academy is hoping to secure international recognition after being named one of four finalists for the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Impact Award. The sailing charity based at Battery Park at the V&A Waterfront is competing against organisations from the United States, Germany and India for the award, which recognises initiatives making a meaningful difference through sailing. The award forms part of the annual World Sailing Awards, which celebrate achievements in international sailing and the sport’s positive impact on communities. The Little Optimist Trust uses sailing and ocean-based therapy programmes to empower children from marginalised and under-resourced communities by building their confidence, developing life skills and raising awareness of the marine environment. Its programmes also aim to create pathways to education and employment in the marine industry. The nomination provides an opportunity for the organisation to showcase South Africa internationally and demonstrate how sailing can become more accessible

to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Founder Greg Bertish described the nomination as a defining moment. “This is an enormous honour, not just for The Little Optimist Trust, but for SA. We have an opportunity to put our country on the map and show the world how sailing can change lives. More importantly, we want to help change the face of sailing worldwide, making it a sport that welcomes, inspires and empowers...” He said being recognised along with “incredible international organisations” was already an achievement, but winning would send an even stronger message. “To win would send a very powerful message: that a small South African organisation with a big dream can make a real difference on the world stage.” Voting closed at 14:00 on Monday 2 November. The winner will be determined through a combination of public votes and an expert judging panel, each contributing 50% to the final result. He or she will be announced at the World Sailing Awards ceremony in Qingdao, China on Wednesday 18 November.

THINKING OUT LOUD
Hyperlocal content is still our game "In five years' time there will be no more newspapers ..." I've been hearing this line for at least the past 10 years. The consolation has always been working for a free community newspaper – everyone predicts you can add at least another 10 or 20 years. But at the pace technology is ever evolving and more and more people are turning to digital to consume information, doomsday for any traditional print media seems just around the corner. Those that have thus far survived have been finding smart ways to keep costs down to buffer advertising income declines – not because newspapers have become irrelevant, but advertising online is simply cheaper or more targeted – or, in the cases of some mainstream publications, are being carried on thanks to legacy. The optimist in me says we're riding out a wave, it's a phase, sooner or later people are going to get sick and tired of staring at a screen all day long and return to good-old (now recycled) paper products for information. But the reality sinks in when picking up a 12-page publication, one that when I walked into the TygerBurger office, still wet behind the ears, was a minimum of 30 pages during the worst week of the month.
..
THE NEWS ITSELF NEEDS NO FALLBACK PLAN. IT ENDURES.
..
Now, we'll be lucky if we get 30 pages for the Black Friday edition – the last edition in November traditionally being the biggest publication of the year. I recall an 80-pager Bellville edition in my early years at the publication. Two years ago we were thrown a lifeline when the media house we had been part of for more than 40 years sold all its community titles while at the same time closing some of its daily and Sunday newspapers. This year alone, four major media houses – the aforementioned owner included – restructured, with editorial departments heavily affected. But it's just a wave, we just need to ride it out ... Then last week it hit home. The first of the three print publications I've worked on in my career printed its last edition. While the brand in some way will still live online and maintain somewhat of a social media presence, People's Post, the weekly hyperlocal that the residents of Cape Town's southern suburbs and parts of the Cape Flats have come to love, is no more. A stark reality ... For a journalist, just the thought of closures and retrenchments is not easy. The majority of us are in it for the love of writing, the deadlines, the rush of chasing down news. We are doing what we've always dreamt of and there is no other reality. We're addicted to news. There simply is no fallback plan. Of course, the news itself needs no fallback plan. It endures. It always has. It's only the medium through which it reaches people that shifts. I'm sure for the powers that be, closing down a publication was no easy decision. But it was not all doom and gloom and, in a bittersweet moment, one of the six editions was kept alive. The Maitland | Woodstock | City editon of People’s Post is, from today, distributed under the TygerBurger brand. To our new readers in the City, Woodstock, Maitland and surrounds, welcome to the family. It may be a new name, but hyperlocal content is still our game. – CECILIA HUME

Appreciation and concern from Peerless Park West resident I would like to sincerely thank the City of Cape Town and all relevant departments for their ongoing efforts to improve and maintain our community in Peerless Park West. I appreciate the work being done to clear the dumping area and keep it clean. Although illegal dumping unfortunately continues, the waste is being neatly piled together and removed regularly, which makes a significant difference to the surrounding area. I also want to express my appreciation for the removal of gangster-related signs in the area. These efforts are important in helping residents feel that their neighbourhood is being cared for and that action is being taken against the visible presence of gangsterism. However, I would also like to bring to your attention a growing concern that is deeply troubling to me and, I believe, to many other residents across the wider Kraaifontein community. The amount of gun violence and loss of life reported over the past four weeks alone is extremely frightening. While I understand that many of these incidents have not occurred directly within Peerless Park West, they have affected surrounding communities, including Eikendal, Scottsdene, Wallacedene and other nearby areas. These neighbourhoods are interconnected, and violence in one part of Kraaifontein inevitably affects the sense of safety and security throughout the wider
community. I recognise that addressing gangsterism and gun violence is an incredibly complex challenge, and I appreciate that the relevant authorities are likely already aware of the severity of the situation. I do not underestimate the difficulty of finding lasting solutions. Nevertheless, it is heartbreaking to see gangsterism continue to tear Kraaifontein apart, with the loss of life becoming an increasingly frightening reality for the people who live here. Residents should be able to live in their homes, walk through their neighbourhoods and go about their daily lives without constantly worrying about gun violence and the devastating consequences of gang-related conflict. I hope that continued cooperation between the City, police, community safety structures and other relevant stakeholders will help bring about meaningful, longterm improvements in safety across Kraaifontein and its surrounding communities. Once again, thank you for the work already being done in Peerless Park West. I raise these matters in the hope of seeing our community continue to improve, not only in terms of cleanliness and the physical environment, but also in terms of safety, dignity and peace for everyone who calls Kraaifontein home. JASON HOUGH, Peerless Park West
Waarmee sal die jongeling sy pad suiwer hou? Dit is die oeroue vraag wat weer by my opkom toe ek nou onlangs voor 'n winkeltjie stilhou. 'n Paar knape; ek skat hulle nie ver ouer as dertien nie, kom verby gewals. Ek dog eers my bril is vuil, want vir my lyk dit die kêrels kom uit 'n wolk uit gestap. Het ek dan nou die hiernamaals binnegegaan sonder dat ek daarvan weet, want hier op aarde stap ons mos nie uit wolke nie. Toe hulle hier so neffens my motor verbystap kry ek die onmiskenbare reuk: boom, ganja, marijuana, aaptwak. Elke kabouter loop met sy eie, persoonlike
zol. AMPER GEROOK, Blue Downs
Dankie tog vir polisie se hulp in verkeer Ek is een van die mense wat geneig is om ons wetstoepassers te kritiseer. Vandag wil ek my waardering uitspreek.
Politicians created our problems in first place After reading Gino Contaldi’s questions for voters last week, core questions need to be answered, not only for voters, but also for the councillors. When we vote, do we give politicians carte blanche to do as they want – definitely not. As a councillor will you go up against your party structures, if your community mandates you, not accepting or agreeing with a policy or practice of what your party represents. Lately the neglect of fiduciary duties (Duty of Care) by public officials has astounded me. Often its not about the people but about power or politics. We have been conditioned to think that only politicians can solve our problems. But at some point, maybe we will wake up and recognise that it was politicians who created our problems. Lately many people think that when you raise concerns it’s an argument, and people who lack accountability think everything is an attack. They don't listen to understand; they only listen to defend themselves. They blame instead of admitting their mistakes. Fortunately, I grew up in a time when the world still had some common sense. If you have it use it.

ICC MEN’S CRICKET WORLD CUP 2027 PREPARATIONS
Getting Park ready AVRIL FILLIES ricket fans in the Western Cape will be spoiled for choice when the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 starts in October and November next year. To get everything ready, upgrades to enhance the cricket experience for global fans at Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park in Paarl are under way. James Fortuin, CEO of Boland Cricket, accompanied by Edward Khoza, chief operating officer of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for Cricket World Cup 2027, and Johannes Adams, president of WP Cricket and board member of Cricket South Africa (CSA) on the LOC 2027, took the media on a walkabout at Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park to explain the changes being made to give global cricket fans the best experience on

South African soil. "The World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia where 14 teams will participate across 12 venues and 57 matches will be played. Cricket fans in the Western Cape will be spoiled for choice as no one wants to miss out on this spectacle of seeing the who's who of cricket," says Khoza. Cricket fans can register for tickets via the ballot, which opened on Thursday 1 October, and have until Saturday 21 November to secure their tickets. "The process gives fans a fair opportunity to access the tickets for the tournament. Tickets will only be available by registering for the ballot before Saturday 21 November. Entry for the
ballot is free. Fans will be able to apply for as many matches as they wish, with each match treated as a separate entry. They can request up to four tickets per match while opting for their preferred ticket category at the same time. The entry for this process requires no payment. Successful entrants wil be contacted by email and given a window to purchase the tickets made available. " says Adams. To Fortuin, hosting the World Cup in Paarl is about more than just cricket — it is a legacy. "The ideal is to utilise the upgraded venues for other big events after the World Cup has concluded, and I would like everyone in the Boland to be part of the legacy of the World Cup 2027," Fortuin says.

Summer Sport Festival gets bigger this December South Africa's premier pre-season sporting showcase is about to get significantly bigger. The Six Gun Grill Summer Sport Festival returns from 2-8 December 2026 with a major expansion that reflects its explosive growth, adding Pretoria's Hoërskool Montana as a second venue alongside the established Wellington base at Huguenot High School. The decision to expand into Gauteng comes on the back of phenomenal participation in 2024 and 2025, when over 100 schools and clubs descended on the Western Cape to sharpen their squads ahead of the new season. That sort of buy-in doesn't happen by accident, it speaks to a formula that's resonating
with coaches, players and administrators hungry for quality pre-season preparation in a competitive yet constructive environment. The festival's blueprint remains
unchanged: deliver high-quality match experience across multiple sporting codes, spanning various age groups to ensure development pathways cater to everyone from promising primary schoolers

to senior high school prospects. What changes is the scale, two venues means more teams, more matches and more opportunities for talent to emerge. MORE THAN JUST MATCHES Co-founder Pieter Rossouw is bullish about what the festival represents beyond the scoreboard. "What makes this festival so special is the opportunity it gives schools to prepare their teams in a relaxed yet driven environment before the new season begins," Rossouw explained. "It's a fantastic way to end the year on a high note, giving players valuable match exposure, building confidence and ensuring they leave motivated, inspired
and ready to take on the 2027 sporting season. “Just like we say: 'Tomorrow's Heroes Today!'" At the Summer Sport Festival, coaches can experiment with combinations, assess squad depth and identify weaknesses that need addressing before the proper season kicks off. Players get genuine game time in pressure situations without the stakes becoming paralysing. It's preparation with purpose. That sort of pre-season recon is worth its weight in gold. The timing is deliberate. Early December sits in that sweet spot where the school year has concluded but the festive break hasn't scattered squads to the four winds.
