Ahorrific act of animal cruelty has shocked animal-welfare advocates after an 8-week-old female puppy was discovered tied to a fence in Dunoon, barely alive and suffering from severely scalded flesh, believed to have been inflicted by boiling water.
The alert came via an anonymous tip-off to CherylLyn’s Rescue Organisation Its founder, Cheryl-Lyn Potgieter, immediately dispatched community member Francis Cinyama to locate the injured animal
“I’m still shaken by the call,” she said “The pup had been tied up and doused with boiling water Her tiny paws were raw and she was struggling to breathe The cruelty was unimaginable ”
Once the puppy was safely transported to her farm Potgieter rushed her to Vet-Clin for emergency care The prognosis was such that the decision was made to put her down “The vet was deeply disturbed by her condition,” Potgieter related
“She was fading fast, suffering more than any creature should I made the heartbreaking decision to have her euthanised to end her pain She didn’t die from her injuries; she was dying because she had no strength left It was the kindest option left ”
SHE WAS DYING, NOT FROM INJURIES, BUT DIMINISHED STRENGTH
WHO’SRESPONSIBLE?
The organisation is now working to trace the person responsible, although leads remain scarce “We don’t know who the owners are,” said Potgieter “Dunoon is large and densely populated and, unfortunately, no-one has come forward with information But whoever did this must be held accountable This is not just cruelty; it’s criminal ”
She has since reported the incident to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and is urging the public to stay vigilant about animal abuse “If you see something say something Report it to the SPCA Take videos or photos if you can Evidence makes all the difference in bringing perpetrators to justice ”
Potgieter hoped the suffering of this unfortunate pup would lead to greater awareness and action
“She mattered Her pain mattered Let’s honour her by fighting for the ones who can’t speak for themselves ”
Cheryl Lyn’s Rescue Organisation encourages people to come forward Tips can be also reported anonymously to the SPCA

One woman who has donated enough lifegiving breast milk for over 50 babies is championing the vital cause that deepened her own sense of wellbeing while she grappled with newborn challenges.
Mother of two, Amber Jade de Beer, began donating breastmilk after the birth of her first child when she joined a regular mothers’ group at the Stork’s Nest Clinic at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital “Like so many women, I was experiencing a bit of postpartum depression and found support in the community of moms there
“I had heard about breastmilk donation, but after learning more about it at the hospital, I decided to sign up, as I happened to have an oversupply of milk
Being able to give back in this way gave me an added sense of purpose during those early months, and when I had my second baby recently, I didn’t hesitate to donate again,” said Amber Candice Willemse, milk handler for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, notes that the proven health benefits of breastmilk are significant for newborns, and even more so for premature babies who have an immature gut
“If mothers are unable to provide breastmilk for their own baby, then we rely on donor breast milk to ensure medically vulnerable infants receive the nutrients and antibodies their developing systems need Due to the high concentration of antibodies in breastmilk, premature babies who are given donated breastmilk face a significantly lower risk of illness, such as necrotising enterocolitis, which is an infection of the intestines and remains a leading cause of death in newborns,” she says
BREASTMILKISGOLDEN
According to Verena Bolton, national coordinator of Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks, over 4 690 babies have received donated breast milk since the inception of Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks in 2017, which operates under the aegis of the Netcare Foundation The initiative collects, stores and distributes breast milk to infants in both private and public sector hospitals, free of charge “All mothers who are eligible and who have excess milk can begin to donate

BECOMEADONOR
“Candice jokes that she wants me to keep having children, then she knows the freezers will always be stocked for those little lives that need breast milk, because sadly, donors are few and far between Every drop counts, so if ever you are considering dumping excess milk down the drain, know that the option exists to donate and make a very real difference,” she says
Willemse highlights the significance of becoming a breastmilk donor, thanking Amber and others who have reached out to help babies in need by making donations through Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks
“Between her first set of donations in 2022 and now this year, Amber has provided more than 150L of breast milk –and counting Her selfless gift is benefiting not only the recipients at our hospital
but also other Netcare facilities Despite her busy family life and career, her willingness to help has not waned, and we are truly grateful To us, Amber is a Supermom,” Willemse concludes . Women who are interested in becoming breast milk donors can contact any Netcare hospital with maternity facilities for more information or visit the Netcare Ncelisa human milk banks web page by following this link: https://bit ly/3EVR355

Minister urges public to safeguard lives
As the world marked International Drowning Prevention Day on Friday 25 July, provincial minister of local government, rnvironmental affairs and development planning, Anton Bredell, is calling on residents to take drowning prevention seriously, whether at home or during times of severe weather
In line with this global observance, the Department of Local Government is annually running a drowning prevention awareness campaign, focusing on water safety education and promoting responsible behaviour near all water bodies
SAFETY
This year’s campaign places special emphasis on a proposed bylaw for Western Cape municipalities, supported by the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), that aims to enforce safety measures for private swimming pools
The bylaw will require owners to install proper fencing, or safety covers to help prevent unsupervised access, especially by children
“We lose too many young lives each year to preventable drownings Pool owners must take responsibility to secure their

pools, just as you’d secure the doors to your house,” said Bredell
“We are acting now to ensure stronger enforcement around pool safety in private homes, because one life lost is one too many ”
AWARENESSCAMPAIGNS
While swimming pool-related incidents remain a major concern, the annual awareness campaigns also address drowning during floods, which tend to increase during the province’s winter season
Communities living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to follow safety alerts, avoid crossing swollen rivers or streams, and teach children to steer clear of stormwater drains or canals
“Our Department, through the PDMC, continues to work with municipalities to improve flood risk communication and community readiness,” said Minister Bredell
“But we need every household to also do their part, be alert, be informed, and most of all, act responsibly around water ”
The Department urges residents to follow the campaign across its digital platforms and share the lifesaving messages widely

Moved by the unseen heroes behind the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Beach Safety Camera Project, South African filmmaker and ocean enthusiast Kabeer Shaik has dedicated his craft to raising awareness of its life-saving work His is just one of 11 camera projects underway in Bloubergstrand
Earlier this year Shaik visited the NSRI Volunteer Support Centre, where he was introduced to the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the innovative camera network that monitors coastal hotspots
What he witnessed left a lasting impression “I spend a lot of time in the ocean, and seeing how the NSRI uses technology and teamwork to save lives has struck a deep chord within me I knew I wanted to contribute in a meaningful way ”
The result is a powerful awareness video, based on a real rescue at Strand Beach, where a camera operator spotted a 10-yearold boy named Matthew caught in a rip current With no lifeguards on duty yet the operator swiftly activated a response team, guiding them to Matthew just in time
“Our operator never took her eyes off him,” NSRI CEO Mike Vonk related “Although in a control room she was emotionally right there with him ”

operation Accompanied by actress Shiefaa Hendricks, who also appears in it, the film blends realism and symbolism, creating an immersive portrayal of empathy and vigilance “We wanted the visuals to feel intimate yet epic,” said Shaik “It’s not just about the cameras; it’s about people who care enough to act ” The production faced challenges, including weather delays, but after weeks of waiting the team filmed under perfect golden-hour conditions in April Various industry partners, from post-production to cast and crew, donated their time to support the cause “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of so many people,” Vonk added “Thanks to Kabeer and the wider media industry this campaign will reach more South Africans and help save lives ”
Launched in 2020, the NSRI’s Beach Safety Camera Project is a first for South Africa The network of high-definition, pan-tilt-zoom cameras is monitored remotely by volunteers who spot hazards, activate lifeguards and provide real-time situational updates
Currently active in 11 coastal locations, the system recently proved its worth again in Plettenberg Bay when an operator, monitoring a training exercise, spotted two children being swept out to sea in a canoe after sunset The swift response averted a potential tragedy

Peter Roux, koorleier, het vir hierdie twee konserte met die tema "As long as I have music", ‘n variasie van sekulêre en gewyde liedere gekies.

Lighter side of opera at the Operetta Competition
competition shines a spotlight on the vibrant, often underappreciated world of operetta a genre rich in humour, romance, and theatrical flair This annual event offers a powerful platform for emerging African vocalists to showcase their talent and step confidently onto the global stage
in 2022 by
Pelham,
“This competition is about joy,” says Pelham “It brings young singers into contact with repertoire that is both entertaining and technically demanding. We want this music to live on and for our singers to carry it forward.” Presented in partnership with Opera UCT and its director Professor Jeremy Silver, the event is as much about nurturing future stars as it is about delighting audiences Finalists will perform solo arias and duets from Viennese operetta, French opéra bouffe and Spanish zarzuela traditions, with themes ranging

Mandela Day should be every day
It was truly heartwarming to read about how so many people were inspired to reach out to the less fortunate on Mandela Day
I sat with my heart blazing imagining the smiles that must have lit so many faces
But it didn't last
Why is this overflow of ubuntu reserved for only one day a year?
Why can't we love our neighbours more steadfastly throughout the year?
Why do we need a special day to make giving a habit?
If dedicating a day is truly all that is needed to motivate people then why not dedicate more days?
Like Valentines Day Instead of making it a day of romantic love why not make it a day of loving our neighbours?
Why not add an element of giving to every major day? On Heritage Day, donate some of your braai or on April Fool's Day, donate some of your cheer On youth day, do something good for youth
The more significant days I think about the more I realise that all of them have theme that is open to interpretation in charitable ways but they've become mostly about politics
Maybe it's time that started adding charity to our mindsets, starting with celebrations on significant days Maybe then we'll turn the tide of poverty in our country

Sondagoggend toe is hier twee waterlekke in De Wetstraat, ‘n blok van mekaar - een by Cambridge en nog een by Hugostraat Weer 'n hele dag sonder water
Vanaf Dag Zero betaal ons 'n pyp of meterheffing dit is jare, Wat is met daardie geld gemaak?
Ek was vier jaar oud toe het ons in Die Akkers hierbo gekuier, toe was hierdie waterpype al hier Ek woon al 50 jaar hier en is al 75 en steeds is die waterpype wat Clive Justus vir my in 2011 gesê het vervang moet word, nie gedoen nie
Hoekom moet ek 'n skoonmaakheffing betaal?
