he discovery of hundreds of dead sardines washing up along beaches in the Melkbosstrand and Milnerton areas have taken a new turn, with laboratory tests confirming the presence of pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) in affected fish.

he Western Cape’s unemployment rate has dipped to 19,5% in the second quarter of 2026, down from 19,6% the previous quarter, keeping the province below the 20% mark for over a year. The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey figures, welcomed by the Western Cape Government, remain well below the national rate and point to steady economic performance despite tough global and national conditions. However, decreases in employment were recorded in Western Cape (48 000), Gauteng (22 000) and North West (15 000), while Mpumalanga (41 000), Eastern Cape (13 000) and Free State (9 000) were provinces that observed the highest increases in employment. It is important to note that decrease in employment means fewer people have active jobs, while a decrease in unemployment means fewer people who want work are without a job. These two metrics track different groups in the Statistics South Africa labor force data and can move independently due to shifts in population and job seeking. Seven out of ten sectors in the province recorded year-on-year gains in employment, driven by the finance (+41 000), trade (+41 000) and agriculture (+26 000) sectors. The provincial labour absorption rate, the share of the working age population that is employment, also grew 1,1 percentage points year-onyear reaching 55,7% compared to 39,6% nationally. The latest QLFS figures also confirm that over the past 10 years, the province’s unemployment rate has consistently remained below the national average.

FROM PAGE 1 Scientists are now investigating whether environmental stressors, including harmful algae, low oxygen levels or unusual oceanographic conditions, may have triggered or intensified the mortality event. Tests for paralytic toxins associated with a harmful algal bloom found none in samples collected from Saldanha Bay, the Cape Canyon and Gansbaai. Domoic acid and yessotoxin were detected at low levels, but the highest concentrations were found in an apparently healthy comparison sample from St Helena Bay. DFFE said the findings suggest the toxins tested were unlikely to have been the primary cause of the sardine deaths, although environmental factors cannot yet be ruled out. BEACHGOERS SHOCKED BY SCALE OF FISH DEATHS James Tanner, who visited Melkbosstrand Beach, said: “I've never seen so many dead fish wash ashore. It was alarming. I told my kids not to touch the fish.” The scale of the deaths has also affected local environmental groups. Zoe Prinsloo of Save a Fishie described the discovery at Lagoon Beach as “incredibly heartbreaking”, saying hundreds of dead fish had washed up along the shoreline during the organisation's birthday beach cleanup. She said the sight was a reminder of how “precious, vulnerable and fragile” marine life is and reinforced the importance of protecting the ocean. Investigation into cause continues DFFE has convened an urgent briefing with small pelagic fishing industry stakeholders, with a task team comprising the department, fishing industry and other relevant stakeholders expected to formulate a coordinated response to the PHV-associated mortality. This resulted in an increase of 329 000 (or 1,3%) in the labour force during the same period. The above changes in employment and unemployment resulted in the official unemployment rate (labour underutilisation) increasing by 0,9 of a percentage point from 32,7% in the first quarter of tis year to 33,6% in the second quarter.

The department's October/November hydroacoustic biomass survey will provide the first opportunity to assess the possible impact of the mortality event on the sardine population, according to a media release. PHV has not previously been reported in South African sardines. It was linked to two large-scale sardine mortality events in Australasia during the 1990s, but was later detected in apparently healthy Australian sardine populations. DFFE said there is currently no evidence that PHV infects humans or other animals. The finding also does not indicate that healthy commercially caught sardines or canned sardine products are unsafe, nor does it currently justify a general suspension of fishing or canning. The public has nevertheless been urged not to collect or consume dead or dying fish and not to feed them to pets. The department said further information would be provided as the investigation continues.

Bloubergstrand surfer dies after collapsing KAILIN DANIELS

54-year-old man from Plattekloof died after collapsing while surfing at Bloubergstrand Beach in Table View on Saturday morning 15 August. According to reports, the surfer has been identified as Walter (Blackie) Swart who would have celebrated his 54th birthday yesterday. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melkbosstrand duty crew was activated at about 10:20 after eyewitnesses reported a surfer in distress in the surf zone. Son and good samaritan bring surfer ashore According to NSRI communications spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the man had been surfing with his 23-year-old son when he became unresponsive. The son used his surfboard to assist his father towards the shoreline, while a male good samaritan helped using an NSRI pink rescue buoy. Together, they managed to bring the man to the beach, where bystander CPR was started. EMERGENCY TEAMS LAUNCH RESUSCITATION EFFORTS Multiple emergency services responded, including NSRI rescue swimmers, Western Cape Government Health EMS, Community Medics, Netcare 911, Metro EMS Western District, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Disaster Risk

Friday 14 August. INTELLIGENCE LEADS POLICE TO APARTMENT Police followed up on information about a foreign national allegedly in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. A search was conducted at premises in Bridge Water Apartments in Conference Lane, Century City, resulting in the discovery of four firearms and 98 rounds of ammunition. Five smartphones and three laptops were also seized and handed in as exhibits for further processing. ard 113 councillor Sue van der Linde says a busy week of operations, community engagement and service delivery has seen progress on several problem areas across the ward, including illegal trading, dumping, homelessness and public-space maintenance. Among the issues receiving attention was the busy corner of Blaauwberg Road and Potsdam Road, where Van der Linde has escalated concerns about illegal trading, littering and dumping. ILLEGAL TRADING HOTSPOT UNDER SCRUTINY Van der Linde said traders had occupied the area near the Potsdam Transport Hub, with some selling items allegedly

She has also asked that the corner be considered for beautification, including the possible use of grey rocks to discourage dumping. ROAD MARKINGS REFRESHED The Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, visited the ward during the week, where pedestrian crossing and trafficcalming road markings at the Potsdam Transport Hub were refreshed. Van der Linde also raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the hub's ticket office, which Quintas has agreed to investigate. A similar concern was raised at Dunoon Clinic, where Van der Linde said traders are using designated bays but that the City should establish which traders are legally authorised. She also raised concerns about litter around the clinic despite bins being provided.

She also reported assisting two people living in vehicles, including helping one with a job application and another with a Sassa matter.

JOINT OPERATIONS TARGET PROBLEM SITES A joint operation was also conducted in the ward, resulting in the removal of several illegal structures and the cleaning of a number of sites.Van der Linde urged residents not to leave unwanted household items on pavements, warning that these are often scattered around the ward and end up in parks and green belts. She encouraged residents to dispose of unwanted household waste responsibly at the Killarney waste facility.

WORK CONTINUES AT SUSTAINABILITY SITE Progress has also been reported at the Potsdam Sustainability Site, where informal structures have been numbered to assist with better management and the cleanup process has begun. Meanwhile, work has started on the exterior of the old tourism centre at Blouberg, with upgrades to the ablution facilities also planned. At Boy de Goede Circle, Van der Linde met with Build It and Engen management about a group of men who gather in the area daily and have become a concern for residents and customers. ave a Fishie marked its eighth birthday with a beach clean-up at Lagoon Beach, where about 50 volunteers collected 211kg of litter while hundreds of dead fish lay washed up along the shoreline. The milestone clean-up on Saturday 15 August was a bittersweet occasion for the environmental organisation, which has spent the past eight years working to protect marine life and keep Cape Town’s beaches clean. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION TURNS BITTERSWEET Founder Zoe Prinsloo said arriving at Lagoon Beach and seeing hundreds of dead fish along the shore was heartbreaking, but she chose to focus on the organisation’s anniversary and the volunteers who came out to support the clean-up. “It was an emotional start to our eighth birthday clean-up today, and for two very different reasons,” said Prinsloo. She said the team was proud to reflect on how far Save a Fishie had come, while the discovery of the dead fish was a stark reminder of the vulnerability of marine life. VOLUNTEERS COLLECT 211KG OF LITTER Around 50 volunteers spread out in both directions along the beach, collecting litter from the shoreline. Among the waste found were large numbers of lollipop sticks, earbud sticks and bottle tops, as well as shoes, pieces of wood, a tyre, at least 15 nappies and about five needles. In total, the volunteers removed 211kg of litter from the beach. Prinsloo said the clean-up continued despite the difficult sight of the dead fish

scattered among the rubbish. EIGHT YEARS OF PROTECTING THE OCEAN The birthday celebration also included a giant card where volunteers could leave messages for Save a Fishie. Prinsloo said the card would be kept at the organisation's office as a reminder of the people who have supported its journey. Volunteers received Save a Fishie birthday caps, flavoured water, cupcakes and metal straws as a thank-you for their efforts. Prinsloo expressed her gratitude to everyone who had supported the organisation over the past eight years, whether through clean-ups, campaigns, donations, sharing information or helping behind the scenes. “You are part of this story,” she said. A SPECIAL THANK YOU Prinsloo also paid tribute to her mother for supporting her since the organisation's beginning. “Save a Fishie may have started as my little Fishie organisation, but you have been such a huge part of its journey and I honestly couldn’t have done these eight years without you,” she said. She also thanked Plastics SA for supporting the organisation for eight years by providing refuse bags for its clean-ups. Prinsloo said the organisation would continue working to protect marine life and the ocean. “Here’s to eight years of fighting for our Fishies, protecting our oceans and proving that small actions can create big waves,” she said.

oad markings at one of Table View’s busy intersections are being refreshed as the City of Cape Town continues its ongoing road maintenance programme. The City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, visited the Killarney Roads Depot team on Wednesday 12 August, while they were repainting road markings at the corner of Potsdam Road and Blaauwberg Road, outside the busy Killarney bus terminus. The Killarney Roads Depot team regularly carries out road-marking maintenance during the drier seasons, with work taking place across the road network in Table View and surrounding areas. Quintas said the work was important for both motorists and pedestrians. “The work these teams do each day includes the repainting and refreshing of road markings to ensure better visibility for both motorists and pedestrians,” said Quintas.

RESIDENTS CAN REPORT FAULTS AND REQUEST MAINTENANCE THROUGH THE CITY’S WEBSITE He said the City carries out ongoing maintenance and upgrades to road markings across its nearly 11 000km road network. Cape Town sets the pace for water leadership The Mother City took centre stage at one of Southern Africa's largest water conferences. Cape Town positioned itself firmly at the forefront of national water leadership at the Water Institute of Southern Africa (Wisa) Biennial Conference, where approximately 2 000 delegates from government, research, engineering, utilities and the private sector gathered under the theme "Rethinking Amanzi: Securing Our Future". As co-anchor sponsor, the City used the platform to showcase its New Water Programme, a sustained investment drive aimed at improving long-term water resilience. Executive director for water and sanitation Leonardo Manus delivered a keynote address in a plenary session entitled "From risis to resilience: Futureproofing South Africa's water and sanitation systems". Drawing on Cape Town's experience since the drought, he highlighted the importance of infrastructure maintenance and pointed to the City's success in reducing non-revenue water from 32% to 25% over the past three years, a key performance target under the Metro Trading Services Reform strategy. Zahid Badroodien, the City's Mayco member for water and sanitation, said the City's role as host offered a chance to display future-forward investments. "Being the host City for one of South Africa's largest water-focused conferences gave us an opportunity to showcase our future-forward investments, from advanced membrane bioreactor technology (MBR) at Zandvliet Wastewater Treatment Works, to the groundbreaking off-grid full-flush sanitation technology already operational in four of Cape Town's informal settlements." He acknowledged that Cape Town, like many cities worldwide, faces challenges with ageing infrastructure and century-old water systems, but said many are being

addressed through the proactive Pipe Replacement Programme, which replaces 50km of water pipes and 100km of sewer pipes annually. SHARING KNOWLEDGE City professionals also shared expertise in break-away sessions, presenting on water reuse, infrastructure renewal, groundwater management, public engagement and climate resilience. The City also showcased its partnership with the Water Research Commission and the Gates Foundation to pilot non-sewered sanitation technologies in informal settlements, testing sustainable, waterefficient solutions while supporting local innovation and manufacturing. Delegates were also shown how flood alleviation projects and integrated river management along the Lourens and Sir Lowry's rivers is reducing flood risk, protecting vulnerable communities and strengthening climate resilience.

A commuter at the Bellville taxi rank raised alarm about taxi drivers and attendants who appear to be operating while intoxicated. "These drivers don't care about the lives and safety of their passengers, driving into oncoming traffic lanes simply to avoid waiting in traffic as everyone else must, insulting and cursing at passengers for objecting to their lives being placed at risk," the reader wrote, They called on the relevant City of Cape Town authorities to investigate. A Durbanville reader described driving on Cape Town's roads as "horrific" and says taxis are far from the only offenders. Speeding on Vissershok Road and Koeberg Road is a daily sight, as is the number of drivers using cellphones behind the wheel despite most newer cars offering hands-free options. E-hailing drivers crawling under the speed limit are causing other motorists to lose patience and overtake recklessly, and pedestrian crossings are routinely ignored. The reader also survived a recent accident in which a drunk driver slammed into the back of their vehicle at a red traffic light. "All the traffic department does is sit along roads setting up speed cameras on the downhill while all hell is breaking loose in our suburbs. We hear that there is campaigning, but nobody is in our Northern Suburbs. Why not? We are also supporters. We are also in need of safety and proper law enforcement, with drug abuse among our youth and school transport that drive reckless, just like other areas. ." "I might be wrong, but the reason for all this dangerous driving is the lack of traffic officers on our roads. Every year it is announced with great fanfare how many traffic officers have now qualified. But where do you see them? Maybe behind a speed camera, but nowhere else." He called for traffic officers to patrol the roads, warning that without visible enforcement, it will only get worse. It was also revealed at a Subcouncil 2 meeting a few months ago that there is limited after-hours traffic law enforcement due to a lack of overtime funding, this while drunk driving continues to escalate on the roads. Many residents are of the view that they are not even concerned about being caught driving drunk, as there is simply no enforcement. Q AND A WITH JP SMITH In the light of this TygerBurgber posed the following questions to the City's Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. TB: How many traffic officers patrol the roads in the northern suburbs, and which suburbs does that include? This is excluding ward safety LE officers. Smith: "There are 20 officers in the morning, six in the afternoon and six at night covering seven subcouncils from Atlantis all the way through to the Northern Suburbs. Metro police and law enforcement Area North also conduct Traffic enforcement, and the Neighbourhood Safety Officers do traffic enforcement, along with by-law enforcement and crime prevention." TB: What is the City’s response to the claim that there is no traffic officer visibility on our roads? Smith: "City of Cape Town enforcement agencies are mandated to respond to complaints. As they are required to respond to large volumes of complaints, this will impact visibility. It must also be noted that there is increasing pressure from Traffic Area North to conduct crime prevention operations on major roads as part of the Freeway management plan. This includes the N7, Jakes Gerwel, Malibongwe drive and the N1. "The decline of road safety cannot only be placed on Traffic Service, but also to every road user flouting the laws that regulate safety on our public streets. The NPA and DOJ play a crucial role in ensuring fines lead to consequence, but this is currently not happening due to an overloaded criminal justice system that is

underfunded and resourced." TB: What is your comment on the increasing number of accidents on our roads? Smith: "Please advise on what data your are making this claim and we will respond." TB: Taxis driving recklessly is increasing unabated. What is the City doing to curb this effectively? Smith: "Public transport is an integral part of the transport network in the city. There are daily enforcement of taxis. In the city daily impoundment of taxis can average around 40. Traffic Services also has a dedicated Transport Enforcement Unit that primarily focuses on taxi enforcement." TB: What is the City doing to curb drunk driving that mostly occurs at night and over weekends in the northern suburbs? Smith: "There are planned operations every month to focus on drunk driving at key time frames on weekends and at night. Ward funding has been provided to assist with these operations." TB: Do you think that traffic enforcement visibility curbs reckless driving? Smith: "Enforcement visibility can curb reckless driving temporarily, but will not ensure long-term driver behavioural change. What will curb reckless driving is stronger action by the criminal justice system in relation to traffic fines and arrests. We cannot be expected to curb recklessness while hundreds of thousands of fines lead to no action by the NPA and DOJ. "The Safety and Security Directorate’s efforts to address the lawlessness on the roads are well documented. In addition, the City’s Traffic Service is now finalising the administrative logistics required for enforcement of the amended by-law recently gazetted. The amendments centre on the provisions for impounding vehicles and related penalties. Now that it has been gazetted, Traffic Officers are able to impound vehicles in a number of instances, including where: the vehicle is being driven on a public road in a manner that is reckless and poses an immediate or imminent danger to the life of passengers, road users, or pedestrians.” STATISTICS In the 12 months between July 2025 and June 2026, Smith says the City's Traffic Service recorded nearly four million offences and made 2 767 arrests, up from 2 255 the previous year. Drunk driving arrests rose by 32%, from 1 619 in 2024-'25 to 2 138.

Top scientists honoured at expo

arklands College students were among the standout young scientists recognised for excellence at the Eskom Expo Cape Town Regional Science Fair, where learners from across the region showcased innovative research and solutions to real-world challenges. Held at the University of Cape Town’s Sports Centre on 12 and 13 August, the regional fair featured 235 projects presented by 333 learners from Grades 4 to 12, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students. Parklands College learners Veer Atwaru and Luan Odendaal were among the biggest winners at this year’s event, taking

YOUNG SCIENTISTS SHOWCASE INNOVATION The regional science fair gave learners the opportunity to present projects developed through Eskom Expo activities during the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos. The projects covered a wide range of disciplines, with the most popular categories including Social Sciences, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, and Physics, Astronomy and Space Sciences. A total of 79 gold medals, 101 silver medals and 101 bronze medals were awarded during the event. The awards recognised learners who demonstrated scientific research, creativity, innovation and critical thinking while investigating issues ranging from health and environmental challenges to energy, technology and engineering. SCHOOLS ACROSS CAPE TOWN RECOGNISED Among the other major award recipients were Aimee Levy and Mia Braun of Herzlia High School, who received the Best Female award, while Aidan Fahy and Felix Lorentz from the International School of Cape Town were named Best Innovation winners. Eyintando Bentshu of Intshukumo High School received the Best Development Project award. Other category winners included learners from schools such as Bishops, Westerford High School, Springfield Convent, Pinelands High School, Star College Cape Town, Wynberg Boys’ High School and the American International School of Cape Town. The diversity of winners highlighted the breadth of scientific talent among young people across the Western Cape. QUALITY OF RESEARCH He said organisers were particularly impressed by the quality of research and critical thinking demonstrated by learners as they explored everyday challenges and made new discoveries. “Taking an independent research project from an idea to presentation requires tremendous dedication, and we are incredibly proud of every learner who participated,” he said. The Eskom Development Foundation also highlighted the importance of providing learners with access to STEM opportunities. The foundation's acting CEO, Mologadi Motshele, said expanding equitable access to quality STEM opportunities remained a priority, particularly for learners from previously disadvantaged communities. She congratulated all participating learners, saying the diversity and quality of projects reflected the exceptional scientific talent found across South Africa. FROM SCHOOL PROJECTS TO FUTURE CAREERS The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists provides learners with an opportunity to develop research skills, present their findings and engage with mentors, judges and STEM professionals. The regional fair also serves as a platform for learners to progress further in their scientific journeys, with finalists having the opportunity to advance to the International Science Fair. For Parklands College, the achievements of Atwaru, Odendaal, Wehrley, Govender, Masindi and Roux add to a strong showing by the school and demonstrate the growing interest in science and innovation among its learners. Organisers encouraged parents and teachers to attend regional science fairs with their children and learners. This will allow them to experience the creativity and innovation on display and inspire more young people to take part in next year's Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

Connected, yet alone The word "isolation" comes from the Latin word insula, meaning "island". Over time, the word evolved through Italian (isolato) and French (isolé), meaning "made into an island". The feeling and connotations of isolation, however, have also morphed as we have headed deeper into the 21st century. DIGITAL COCOON Now the thought of closing our doors and wearing our headphones is seen as a comfort or a necessity, where we can destress and fulfil our own personal needs after enduring a demanding working day. Since the quick but subtle decline of televisions and broadcasting as an "escape" from reality and a means to stay informed and entertained, users have been tricked into becoming addicted to seeing their desires or hobbies packaged directly to them in short clips through TikTok's, Instagram reels or YouTube shorts. Families started interacting less, while

the children became more immersed in their tablets and YouTube channels, and angsty teenagers have to understand and sometimes compare their lives to the glamorous aesthetics and filters they see when watching the Instagram stories of their friends or celebrities they admire. Now we watch, comment and "like" friends and family from afar on social media when they have weddings, celebrate births, or grieve a loved one — like voyeurs, it seems. CELLPHONE SOURCES Our cellphones have become our main source of information and entertainment. Gone are the days when the family would huddle at six to watch the latest episode of 7de Laan. Now everyone can enjoy their own distractions and retreat to the peaceful quiet of their bedrooms. I think the Covid-19 pandemic marked the crucial breaking point and awakening for a new meaning of this word to be birthed. Stranded and locked away in our houses during the height of Covid-19, our need and the time we spent on our cellphones intensified. Whether this was video calls and texts with loved ones, sending emails and attending Teams meetings, or doom-scrolling on social media whilst being flooded with the latest news and death stats, we adapted to being "happily marooned on our own social islands". ALGORITHMS THAT FEEDS All the while, the algorithms have been tracking, studying and curating a feed dedicated to our tastes, interests, likes and dislikes — and yet most people aren't seeing that these tech wizards have woven a cocoon around the users and their cellphones. This trap, however, disguises itself. So many are also quick to defend their ideologies or mock those they disagree with online in such creative fashion with GIFs and images, and yet lack the courage to spew these thoughts in real life. With the popularity and convenience of artificial intelligence, it has also impacted the way we view images, listen to music or watch videos. Now we second-guess and doubt what we see and hear more than ever. It's a strange and interesting time to be alive in 2026, but now more than ever we need to enrich the way we communicate instead of resorting to numbing ourselves to death on our own devices. - KEANAN HARMSE

COMMEMORATION: Residents gathered at Het Posthuys Museum in Main Road, Muizenberg, on Saturday 8 August to witness a cannon firing marking the 1795 Battle of Muizenberg. The event was hosted by Muizenberg Heritage in partnership with the Gri Guriqau Xam Research Institute and the Cannon Association of South Africa. Heritage Western Cape formally gazetted the battle site as a Provincial Heritage Site on Friday 27 March this year, following a nomination by the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department. The battle took place when a British naval fleet attacked Dutch forces on the slopes of the Muizenberg mountains. The Dutch eventually surrendered the Cape, allowing Britain to gain control of the important Indian trade route. Another cannon firing is planned for Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September.

Cost of uniforms feels like ﬁnancial exploitation I am writing this letter in the hope that it will highlight a pressing concern for single parents and lower-income families. We recently started shopping for school uniform items for our grandson, who enters Grade 1 next year. We were shocked by the prices, largely driven by the requirement to purchase plain items with compulsory school badges stitched or printed on them, including shirts, dresses, jerseys, tracksuits, and blazers. A Grade 1 learner typically wears a uniform for only 12 to 18 months before outgrowing it. Paying up to R400 for a jersey, R300 for a shirt, or R600 for a tracksuit top places an unfair ﬁnancial strain on families already struggling with the cost of living. While clothing banks exist, they do not address the core issue. Why are basic school clothes so heavily branded and expensive? Why are parents not allowed to buy plain, affordable white shirts or standard items from general retail

stores? We ask why the Western Cape and National Departments of Education allow what feels like blatant ﬁnancial exploitation of parents and guardians. Additionally, I would like to address the issue of school stationery and supplies. Are school stationery packages covered under fee exemptions or subsidies? If not, why are parents often pressured or required to purchase stationery directly through the school rather than sourcing cheaper alternatives independently. And why are parents expected to supply general administrative and sanitary items such as A4 paper reams and toilet paper for the school’s routine operations? Schools should operate as educational institutions, not proﬁt-driven enterprises. I hope these matters receive urgent attention from the relevant departments as families begin preparing for the upcoming school year. A CONCERNED FUNDER OF A SINGLE MOTHER

Very kind Samaritans return lost cellphone It was two Fridays ago, I believe on 24 July, when I, with a very dear friend of ours and her three little girls walked to the little playpark corner of Gert van Rooyen and Malmesbury roads. The little girls always enjoy this playpark with the merry-go-round and the slide and were having great fun. I took a video of them with my cellular phone and went to sit down on the little couch before returning to our cottage at La Provence for refreshments. There was a knock at the front door and our on-duty security guard, seeing me, asked whether I had my cellular phone with me. But fear not, Western Cape traffic officer S. Sonday came to our rescue. What a relief and stunning sight to

see the blue lights lighting up the sombre moment we were experiencing. Officer Sonday stayed right behind us and with us all the way until we were able to nurse the vehicle all the way to the petrol station which was almost an hour on the road with the terrible damage done to the tyre.

ie Groot Phesantekraal-wynlandgoed se 2024 Groot Phesantekraal Pinotage is verlede Woensdagaand as een van die land se voortreflikste wyne uit amptelik afgebakende terreine in die 21ste jaarlikse SA Terroir-wyntoekennings by die Lanzerac Hotel and Spa aangewys. Dié wyn was een van 38 nasionale wenwyne in die kompetisie — die enigste uit die Durbanville-wynlandgoed wat dié eer te beurt geval het. Die ses top-trofeë is aan wynprodusente uit vyf verskillende terreine toegeken. Boonop het al die nasionale wenwyne van die verskillende wynkultivars en -style uit 16 terreine in die wyngebiede gekom. Entrepreneurship programme reaches 50 unemployed youth The University of the Western Cape's (UWC) Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) has hosted seven of 14 planned training sessions at its Innovation Hub in Parow, reaching 50 unemployed young people over the past two months. The sessions form part of the Youth Unemployment Entrepreneurial Training Programme (YUETP), which the CEI runs with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSeta) to address youth joblessness through training, business development and seed capital support. CEI director Abe Oliver said the latest group included not only UWC alumni but also honours students from Stellenbosch University, graduates from the University of the Free State and BTech graduates from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. “We have a wide range and interesting mix of youth forming part of our current incubation programme for unemployed youth, the Youth Unemployment Entrepreneurial Training Programme (YUETP), which is indicative of the need for job opportunities for our youth in this country.” Participants range from matriculants to postgraduates, with preference given to those already running side businesses. Oliver said participants were selected based on whether they had an interest in business, with those

running existing ventures given priority. “With this programme, we refine and support these businesses,” said Oliver. PROGRAMME OUTCOMES Oliver said South Africa's youth unemployment rate stood at 45,8% in the first quarter of 2026, climbing to 60,9% among those aged 15 to 24. Tackling those figures required training but also needed to inspire hope. “The YUETP has three tangible outcome pathways for participants to consider, namely further education, employability and entrepreneurship. It offers young people not just hope, but tangible opportunities to build sustainable futures.” The programme also builds social capital through networking and ecosystem support to help participants sustain businesses beyond the training period. The programme was first launched in 2025, when 32 participants completed it. That prompted an expansion to 50 participants this year. A follow-up poll of the 2025 group, conducted this year, found that three participants were running registered businesses, while five others had secured full-time employment while managing their own ventures. Two had progressed to the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) for grant funding, which Oliver described as a milestone in preparing young people to access external resources.

ie Tygerberg-kinderkoor het 'n besondere prestasie behaal deur as wenners aangewys te word in die kinderkoor-afdeling van die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie, wat oor die langnaweek by Sun City gehou is. Die koor is met 'n "Gold Level 3 Master"-uitslag bekroon. Die Summa Cum Laude-kompetisie is 'n internasionale koor- en orkeskompetisie vir die jeug wat vanuit Wene, Oostenryk, in samewerking met die Choral Celebration Network Foundation gekoördineer word. Dit was die eerste keer dat die organisasie die kompetisie buite Oostenryk aangebied het. Die beoordelaars was Saul Zaks van Denemarke, Kenneth Griffith van Boston (VSA), Pearl Shangkuan van Michigan (VSA), en Renette Bouwer en Bernard Krüger van Suid-Afrika. Kore en orkeste van Suid-Afrika, Zimbabwe, Duitsland, Oostenryk en Kanada het deelgeneem. WÊRELDKLAS Die Tygerberg-kinderkoor is tans derde geplaas volgens Interkultur se Top 1000-ranglys vir die beste kore wêreldwyd. Die koor is die enigste kinderkoor in die top-vyf en ook tweede op die wêreldranglys in die afdeling vir kinder- en jeugkore. Onder leiding van die dirigent Karina Erasmus, met Elizca Mulder as begeleier, het die koor in Sun City 'n veelsydige program met musiek uit verskillende style en tradisies aangebied. New production of Mamma Mia! at Artscape A new production of Mamma Mia! is coming to Artscape Opera House in Cape Town from Thursday 3 September to Sunday 11 October, followed by a run at Teatro Montecasino in Johannesburg from Friday 16 October to Sunday 22 November. The production features Amra-Faye Wright, who played Velma Kelly in Chicago the Musical on Broadway for 23 years, as Donna Sheridan. Samantha Peo joins as Donna's friend Tanya, reuniting with Wright from the 2005 and 2008 South African productions of Chicago. 10 000 turn out for Blisters

KAYLYNNE BANTOM oggy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 10 000 people who turned out for this year’s Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk at Green Point Common on Sunday 16 August. Organised by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) in association with Lucky Star, the event raised funds to support the organisation’s efforts to provide meals to thousands of vulnerable children across the Western Cape. With this year’s event drawing a record 10 000 participants, PSFA director Petrina Pakoe says they are already looking ahead to next year, with plans to build on the success and reach even more supporters. “The event is over but the support that we need is ongoing. We are grateful to everybody who came to support. Every entry feeds 23 children.”

She thanked participants and sponsors for their contribution, while appealing for continued support as preparations get underway for the next walk. orningstar Junior Rugby hosted its inaugural sevens rugby tournament on Monday 10 August, bringing 10 teams from various parts of Cape Town together. The teams were from Goodwood Junior Jaguars, Sakumzi Rugby Organisation, Union Milnerton Rugby Club, Connect NTK Rugby Football Club, Primrose Rugby Football Club, Helderberg Rugby Club, Edusmart Group, Kuils River Rugby Juniors and Hamediehs Rugby Football Club. The tournament aimed to give young players the opportunity to play rugby, gain exposure and develop their skills — "something that can be difficult to find in under-resourced communities", said Aldo Carelse, one of the project coordinators at Morningstar Junior Rugby.
