he Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment says the acute sardine mortality phase appears to have ended, as laboratory testing resumes to investigate the possible role of pilchard herpesvirus. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has received no further reports of dead sardines since 10 September, indicating that the acute phase of the mortality event has ended. In a statement issued on Sunday, the department said surveillance was continuing as laboratory testing for pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) resumed to establish whether the virus was present and whether it was associated with the deaths. “Further laboratory testing for pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) is underway and results are expected during the coming week,” the department said. Samples collected before, during and after the mortality event are being tested to help determine when the virus was present, its possible association with affected fish and whether it remains detectable. The department cautioned that the detection of viral material alone does not confirm active disease. Laboratory findings will therefore be assessed alongside fish health observations and environmental information. Coastal authorities, fishers and members of the public have been urged to report any further sightings of dead sardines promptly. PRECAUTIONARY CATCH LIMITS REMAIN IN PLACE An approved precautionary catch limit is in force from 3 to 30 October 2026 to regulate sardine removals while additional scientific information is collected and assessed. Under the measure, each sardine right holder may harvest no more than 33% of its remaining uncaught 2026 directed sardine total allowable catch in the applicable management area, either west or east of Cape Agulhas. The DFFE said the fishery remained an important source of samples for laboratory analysis, as well as information about where sardines were being encountered. The Small Pelagic Scientific Working Group is scheduled to reassess the situation on 27 October 2026, or sooner if significant new evidence becomes available. HYDROACOUSTIC SURVEY PLANNED Preparations are also continuing for an end-of-year hydroacoustic survey, which is scheduled to begin in early November. The survey will cover the coastline from Hondeklip Bay to Port St Johns and is

expected to provide the first fisheriesindependent estimate of sardine biomass and distribution since the mortality event. The findings should help improve understanding of the impact of the event on the sardine population and inform further management decisions. Meanwhile, the department and its partners are continuing to implement a coordinated response plan, including monitoring potential effects on predators that depend on sardines for food and on the wider marine ecosystem. PUBLIC WARNED AGAINST COLLECTING DEAD SARDINES The DFFE said PHV is a fish virus that is not known to infect humans. Commercially produced sardine products released through regulated channels remain safe. However, the public has been advised not to collect or consume dead or dying sardines found on beaches or floating near the shore. The department also warned against feeding the fish to animals or using them as bait. The public are encouraged to report new sightings to the relevant coastal authorities so that monitoring and scientific investigations can continue.
Blue Flag status provides residents and visitors with an internationally recognised indication that a beach is managed according to demanding standards for water quality, safety, environmental care and public facilities. It also supports Cape Town’s tourism sector by offering a benchmark familiar to local and international visitors. The City is also introducing new amphibious wheelchairs at several beaches this season, including most of its Blue Flag beaches. The specialised wheelchairs are designed to help beachgoers with mobility impairments access the ocean. The City’s Recreation and Parks Department will continue working with other municipal departments and partners to maintain the standards required for Blue Flag status and support ongoing efforts to improve beach accessibility.

esidents are being encouraged to join the new Beachfront Foot Beat, a community initiative aimed at promoting safety while giving people an opportunity to socialise and exercise along the Table View beachfront. A collaboration between Table View Neighbourhood Watch and the Table View Community Police Forum (CPF), the initiative invites the public to join a walk along the beachfront every second Monday evening. David Harris, chair of the Table View CPF, said the initiative was launched
The Beachfront Foot Beat brings residents, Neighbourhood Watch members and CPF representatives together for regular walks along the Table View beachfront.
RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO JOIN THE NEW BEACHFRONT FOOT BEAT to create an opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors in a fun and safe environment. “The walk is open to any member of the public and if it encourages people to join a Neighbourhood Watch it is a positive,” said Harris. VISIBLE PRESENCE ALONG THE BEACHFRONT The foot beat currently covers the stretch between KFC in Marine Circle and Doodles. Participants meet at 18:30 in the parking area opposite KFC, also known as the Kite Beach parking lot in Bloubergstrand. Harris said organisers hoped that having people walking together in large numbers would contribute to a safer beachfront environment. “We believe that the large numbers participating in itself will ensure safety and Neighbourhood Watch and CPF members will be clearly visible,” he said. Although the police is not formally involved in the initiative, police members are welcome to participate in the walks. WALKS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC The initiative also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the two organisations and encourage greater community involvement in local safety efforts. Residents do not need to belong to a neighbourhood watch to participate. The walks are open to everyone, and the organisers are promoting them through various Facebook pages and community street groups.
Have your say on the Flandorp development in Table View
Residents affected by the proposed Flandorp property development in Ward 113 are invited to attend a public meeting to raise their concerns and engage directly with the developer and City officials. The meeting, initiated by Ward councillor Sue van der Linde, will take place on Wednesday 21 October, from 18:30 to 20:30 at Leibrandt van Niekerk Hall. Van der Linde said she had taken note of concerns raised by residents about the development and encouraged those affected to attend the meeting to hear the facts and participate in discussions. The gathering will provide an opportunity for residents to engage with the property developer and City officials, seek clarity on the project and raise issues that matter to the community. RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE Van der Linde will moderate the meeting, which aims to facilitate informed discussion between residents, the developer and the relevant City representatives.
Dog owners are also welcome to bring their dogs, provided they are socialised and kept on a leash at all times. WHEN AND WHERE TO JOIN The Beachfront Foot Beat takes place every second Monday at 18:30. Participants meet at the parking area opposite KFC in Marine Circle, also known as the Kite Beach parking lot. The next walks are scheduled for October 19, November 2, November 16 and November 30. Residents are encouraged to join the initiative and help build a more visible community presence along the beachfront.

Annandale Farm land release probed T
he National Department of Human Settlements has launched an investigation into the City of Cape Town’s release of the Annandale Farm site near Dunoon for affordable housing development. The probe follows claims that national grant funding was used to acquire the land and no houses have been built for the community it was meant to serve. Deputy Minister of Human Settlements Tandi Mahambehlala announced the investigation after a service-delivery imbizo in Dunoon on 30 September, saying the Dunoon ward councillor and GOOD Member of Parliament Brett Herron had brought the matter to her attention. Mahambehlala noted that Dunoon was one of the most overcrowded areas in Cape Town and that “Annandale was meant for the delivery of houses for the people of Dunoon.” She said the land was acquired by the national Department of Human Settlements for the Western Cape. “We hear that the province decided to transfer the land to the City and the City now sold the land. Now the Minister of Human Settlements has sanctioned an investigation because we don’t want to speak out of turn. We want to get to the bottom of what has happened because we believe that public funds are for public consumption.” CITY ANNOUNCED LAND RELEASE On 6 August the City announced it was releasing the nearly 72-ha Annandale site, along the N7 and opposite Dunoon, for affordable housing opportunities through public-private partnerships. The site is valued at approximately R256 million. The City said it had completed preliminary feasibility assessments and invited developers to submit proposals by Wednesday 21 October. The proposed development could include affordable and market-related housing, commercial and educational facilities, community services and public open space. GRANT FUNDING AND PROFIT CLAIMS Herron, GOOD Secretary-General and the party’s mayoral candidate for Cape Town, issued a statement on 24 September based on a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application he had submitted to the City. According to the City’s PAIA response, the R162 636 558 (excluding
“We want to get to the bottom of what has happened because ... public funds are for public consumption” - Tandi Mahambehlala VAT) paid for the land came from Urban Settlement Development Grant (USDG) funding, and the acquisition was recorded against a specific City project code tied to the property. National Treasury’s grant framework states that USDG funding is meant to supplement municipal budgets “to support the national human settlements development programme, focusing on poor households”, with objectives including “increased acquisition and availability of well-located land for human settlements development” and “increased access of poor households to public and socioeconomic amenities”. Herron, who was Cape Town’s Mayco member for Transport and Urban Development at the time, said he had publicly announced the acquisition of the 71,8-ha farm in 2017 to reduce pressure on Dunoon. “Nine years after money was spent for purposes of ‘increased access of poor households to public and socioeconomic amenities’ none of it has gone towards housing Dunoon’s poorest and overcrowded residents. Zero houses have been built, but the City’s turning a fat profit.” The land was now being sold for a R71 million profit to a private developer, with only a “weak and unbinding reference to affordable housing”, Herron said. More Dunoon residents would have benefited had the City developed social and affordable housing on the land itself. The City had refused his PAIA request to see the original approval and valuation reports, classifying them as confidential. Herron has lodged a formal appeal against the decision. CITY RESPONDS Carl Pophaim, Mayco member for Human Settlements, said the property was purchased to be developed for affordable housing, as documented in the Mayoral Committee resolution at the time, of which Herron was part. He said the acquisition was not a Dunoon-specific response but a city-wide
Map showing the Annandale Farm land.
housing response, and the land-release programme did not dispose of land to make a profit. “The potential land disposal is not to make a profit, but rather to enable the discounted release of the property in exchange for the maximisation of affordable housing opportunities in the development scheme.” National and Provincial Treasury had been informed of the impending disposal and Council had approved strict conditions. The tender process was still underway and no appointments had been made. Pophaim said material changes in the national housing regime since 2020 meant the subsidy for fully subsidised housing was now focused exclusively on beneficiaries over 60, military veterans and child-headed households. “Dunoon residents under 60 and not within the national categories would not qualify for fully subsidised subsidy housing because the national programme does not allow for this anymore.” The Breaking New Ground (BNG) programme would therefore not be able to build homes for Dunoon residents, as there was no housing subsidy programme the City could offer employed people or anyone under 60.
In response the City had developed its own affordable-housing programme over the past two years, based on public-private partnerships, targeting households earning more than R3 500 and less than R34 800 a month. “Because we don’t have an active grant to support affordable housing from the national government we are using the private sector to develop these properties for us,” Pophaim said. “We are using our land as leverage to incentivise the private sector to do this.” Anyone from Dunoon or elsewhere earning between R3 500 and R34 800 would be able to apply. For residents who earned too little or did not qualify under national requirements the City had plans for Doornbach and other land parcels in the area. Pophaim said the City had also permitted micro-developers to build up to 12 units on their property without submitting a rezoning application and had made it possible for building plans to be approved cheaply. “This is not about taking opportunities away from residents of Dunoon,” he said. “This release, along with the microdeveloper programme, is about expanding the housing options for Dunoon’s residents.”
Eden on the Bay calls for action as Big Bay disorder continues KAILIN DANIELS Management at Eden on the Bay beachfront lifestyle shopping mall is calling for a coordinated response to ongoing public drinking, disruptive gatherings, loud music and other incidents of public disorder in the surrounding Big Bay beachfront and public-parking areas.
The team stated it understood the frustration of residents, visitors and businesses affected by the behaviour, which it said was undermining the area’s appeal as a popular destination. They said it had sought permission from the City of Cape Town, together with the Big Bay Master Property Owners
Eden on the Bay said sustained law enforcement was needed in the public areas surrounding the popular Big Bay beachfront as summer approached.
Association, to take greater responsibility for managing the surrounding public areas, particularly in relation to taxi activity, parking and access control. However, the request was declined. PUBLIC AREAS OUTSIDE EDEN’S CONTROL Eden on the Bay management stressed the public-parking areas and beachfront walkway in front of the restaurants are not part of the sectional-title development. The property itself is managed by a body corporate, which includes providing security. The surrounding public spaces, however, fall under the jurisdiction of the City. According to management, although the areas are closely associated with Eden on the Bay are used by visitors to the centre its private security personnel do not have the same enforcement powers as City Law Enforcement or the police. “This distinction is essential to ensuring that intervention comes from the authorities empowered to address unlawful conduct in these spaces,” management said. It added that this did not lessen
its concern about the impact of the incidents or its commitment to finding a lasting solution. CALLS FOR SUSTAINED ENFORCEMENT Management and its body corporate said they had repeatedly raised concerns about public disorder and the need for a consistent and visible law enforcement presence. Private security officers continue to respond to incidents affecting the Eden on the Bay property and assist where they can within their lawful powers. A community petition calling for additional Law Enforcement was supported by more than 300 people and handed to the ward councillor in December 2025. Management said although the festive season was imminent continuation of the problems showed sustained intervention was sorely needed. The body corporate also investigated supplementary security options for the beachfront and parking areas. For it providing additional coverage during evenings, over weekends and other periods when incidents were more likely remained a challenge. With summer approaching Eden
on the Bay called on the City, Law Enforcement and relevant policing authorities to prioritise visible patrols, on evenings, at weekends and at peak periods. It also called for enforcement against unlawful public drinking, disruptive noise, threatening behaviour and access obstruction. This called for a coordinated response with clear responsibilities and ongoing communication. “Private security efforts need to be supported by effective public law enforcement,” management pointed out. COMMUNITY TO REPORT INCIDENTS Residents, visitors and businesses are encouraged to document incidents through the Big Bay Incident Reporting Portal. This, management said, would help establish the extent and frequency of problems and support ongoing requests for intervention. The portal doesn’t replace emergency services or the role of the police. Eden on the Bay said it was committed to ensuring safe, clean and welcoming public spaces. he National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is preparing for a potentially challenging summer, with higher temperatures, increased fire risk and pressure on water resources among the concerns facing the Western Cape. The strengthening El Niño climate cycle could add to seasonal pressures, prompting the organisation to consider how changing weather conditions may affect rescue operations, vessel maintenance and water safety. NSRI head of operations Charl Maritz said the current outlook was being incorporated into summer-readiness planning, particularly following discussions with provincial disaster management officials in the Western Cape. PREPARING FOR INCREASED WATER ACTIVITY Hotter weather is expected to draw more people to beaches, swimming pools, rivers and dams, potentially increasing the demand for rescue services and raising the risk of drowning. NSRI stations are preparing for a potentially busier drowning-in-progress season, with readiness checks covering crew and vessel availability, preseason maintenance, coordination with lifeguarding services and drowningprevention awareness. The organisation is also strengthening its ability to respond to unpredictable weather events. In July, NSRI volunteers and operational personnel completed specialist swiftwater rescue training to improve their ability to operate in fast-moving water. The training forms part of broader preparations as rescue teams face calls to assist during inland flooding and other
HIGHER TEMPERATURES BRING BIGGER FIRE RISKS emergencies. WATER SECURITY Water security is another concern, with Western Cape dam levels reported in late August to be 5% lower than at the same time last year. NSRI head of fleet and facilities Graeme Harding said the organisation needed fresh water to maintain its rescue vessels and equipment. “It has a dire effect on us. We have to wash and flush boats every time they’re used to ensure they stay in top shape.” Crews returning from demanding rescues also need water to shower and clean their personal protective equipment. To reduce pressure on municipal supplies, newer NSRI stations incorporate rainwater-harvesting tanks, while some facilities already have wellpoints or boreholes. The organisation is also investigating the feasibility of installing boreholes at other strategic bases. Operational teams are reviewing waterconscious procedures, including engine flushing, while ensuring conservation measures do not compromise vessel safety or mechanical readiness. DROWNING PREVENTION REMAINS A PRIORITY NSRI community programmes manager Mthe Kweyama said hotter conditions could lead to more families and children seeking relief at swimming spots, placing additional pressure on lifeguards and increasing drowning risks. The organisation plans to adapt its water-safety messaging to reflect the conditions expected this summer while
continuing to promote safe behaviour around water. Maritz said climate-related considerations were increasingly becoming “standing planning considerations rather than once-off items”. The NSRI's preparations include managing water supplies at rescue stations, protecting crews working in extreme heat, anticipating changes in recreational water use and ensuring rescue resources are ready when needed. Although conditions over the coming months remain uncertain, the organisation is focusing on early preparation to help protect its crews and the public throughout the summer season. For more information about the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), its rescue services, water safety initiatives, volunteer opportunities and how the public can support its lifesaving work, visit www. nsri.org.za.
RICHARD ROBERTS Brand new electric minibus taxis have just been introduced to Century City’s busy public transport route, something developers in the industry say they are excited about. According to recent newspaper reports two eKamva electric minibus taxis, as it is known, will be introduced to the route. The eKamva is South Africa’s first electrical minibus taxi and is developed by flx EV, a South African electric mobility company. Justin Coetzee, founder and chief executive, said the eKamva electric minibus programme is a key step in decarbonising public transport in South Africa, focusing on commercial viability through solar-powered charging and reliable fleet operations. “We have a robust pipeline for the coming year and
are working closely with our partners to build local capacity,” said Coetzee. His company builds the vehicles, charging infrastructure and fleet support needed to electrify the country’s minibus taxi industry. Coetzee explained that the eKamva platform is built on the Chinese automobile manufacturer Higer Bus Company’s Higer H5C which features a 70-kWh battery and 50-kW DC (direct current) charging, specifically engineered for the demands of the taxi industry. Duolun Technology, a global provider of integrated solar-storage-charging systems, and flx EV last week announced a partnership, naming Duolun as flx EV’s charging partner for the delivery of its first fast-charging hubs. The companies made the announcement at this year’s Africa E-Mobility Week 2026 which was held from 28 September to 30 September in Cape Town.

The partnership’s first project is already underway, a fast-charging hub at Century City – combining rooftop and carport solar generation, battery storage and liquidcooled ultra-fast chargers. “An electric taxi is only as good as the place it charges,” said Coetzee. “Duolun brings the integrated engineering this problem needs – solar, storage and fast charging designed to work as one system. Century City is where we prove that, on a real taxi rank, with real drivers.” Beyond Century City, the companies said they intend to build toward a much larger network over the next decade – an ambition, not yet a committed programme, of fast-charging infrastructure across roughly ten major South African urban centres, with around ten hub locations planned per centre over time. The next sites under consideration are in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Belinda Davids
Belinda Davids to make musical theatre debut
P
erformer Belinda Davids has been cast as Rachel Marron, the lead role in The Bodyguard, the international musical making its South African premiere at Artscape in March next year. Born in Gqeberha, she moves from a successful solo career into her first musical-theatre role. Davids has toured the world in The Greatest Love of All, a Whitney Houston tribute show, and her four-octave vocal range has drawn frequent comparisons with Houston. In 2020 she reached the finals of series 14 of Britain’s Got Talent. Before her audition Simon Cowell told her that filling Houston’s shoes would be tough. She performed “One Moment in Time” to a standing ovation, with Cowell calling it “the audition we’d been waiting for all season”. Davids received similar acclaim in 2023, earning a Golden Buzzer on Got Talent: All-Stars in Spain and advancing to the final in a moment broadcast across Europe. THE SHOW The Bodyguard follows superstar singer Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer, the bodyguard hired to protect her, as fame, danger and romance collide. The production features Houston hits including “I Will Always Love You”, “I Wanna Dance with Some-
body”, “Queen of the Night”, “I Have Nothing”, “Run to You” and “So Emotional”. The musical opens at Artscape on 12 March. Davids will be supported by an all-South African cast, crew and band, with details to be announced. “I have loved Whitney Houston since I was a child, so to have this new opportunity and fresh, exciting challenge is a wonderful blessing,” Davids said. “I’m so grateful.” Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management said the role is vocally demanding and that Davids has built a worldwide reputation for matching Houston’s power. The 1992 film The Bodyguard, starring Houston opposite Kevin Costner, was among the highest-grossing films of that year. Its soundtrack sold 45 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling soundtrack album ever, and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You” were both nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Early Bird specials offer a 20% discount for performances on 17 and 18 March at Artscape and are available until 31 October. A 20% block booking discount is available for groups of 20 or more on selected shows and price categories. Contact sales@showtime.co.za. Book tickets at Ticketmaster.

Nik Rabinowitz brings his show ‘Mountain Jew!’ to Die Boer Nik Rabinowitz brings his show Mountain Jew! to Die Boer theatre restaurant in Durbanville on Tuesday 20 October at 20:30. Born in a converted barn on the slopes of Constantiaberg, Rabinowitz says he grew up as a mountain-farmboy-Jew climbing trees, commentating on his own rugby games in three official languages, and attending a Waldorf school, where he learned to crochet his feelings and divine the precise spiritual frequency of organic fair-trade mohair (using only a pentatonic flute and a watercolour of a gnome). A step-by-step guide for eligible voters on the voting day
On Wednesday 4 November you can cast your ballot in the municipal election. Make sure you go to the voting station at which you are registered. You can check this on the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) website (www. elections.org.za) or send an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (R1.00 per SMS). Remember, because this is a municipal election, you will only be allowed to vote at the voting station where you are registered. Once you arrive at the voting station, show your South African Identification Document or a temporary identification certificate to the voting officer. The voting officer will check that your name appears on the voters’ roll. Once the voting officer is satisfied that you have the correct ID, are a registered voter and have not already voted, your name is marked off the roll, your ID is stamped on the second

page (if you still have the green ID book) and the nail on your thumb is inked. The voting officer stamps the back of the correct number of official ballot papers and gives them to you. Take your ballot paper(s) to an empty ballot booth, mark the ballot paper correctly, fold it so that your choice isn’t visible and place the ballot paper in the ballot box. . If you are physically disabled or visually impaired, you can choose someone to help you at the voting station. The presiding officer can also help you cast your vote, but an observer and, if available, two agents from different parties must be present. If you incorrectly mark a ballot paper, ask the presiding officer for a new ballot paper. Ensure that the incorrect ballot paper is marked as “cancelled”. Once your ballot has been placed in the ballot box, it can’t be removed.

THINKING OUT LOUD
SLICE OF LIFE
Another cascade of calamities is testing my fortitude and confidence to take on life “Most things I worry about never happen anyway” – quote from the late Tom Petty. The swift and sudden hand of fate and unpredictability of the future can disrupt our lives and shake our foundations. We can find that our morals or beliefs can start to slowly decay when tragedy strikes and we find ourselves questioning our sense of peace and even abandoning our faith by focusing on the problems we face. Every year brings uncertainty and optimism, but 2026 in particular will be remembered as one of the toughest years of my life. And mind you, I’ve lost all my grandparents whilst battling to accept my mother’s cancer diagnosis all in one year during 2016. The years before 2016, I struggled with panic attacks to the point where I struggled to finish a meal, sit inside a classroom or even fall asleep. During those painful years I was paralysed by anxiety, I wondered and asked “why was this happening to me?” It was as if my shadow was taking control of my body and my thoughts were slowly sliding down the drain. But once I decided to “rescue myself” and with the aid of music, family, faith and therapy, I made the decision to crack this simulation of fear I was under. I decided to put myself in uncomfortable situations and feel comfortable in them by facing my fear and humming a mantra that I’ll be alright and no panic would petrify me when I sat inside those lecture rooms I dreaded as a student. After consistent practise of this method, which included growling like a lion in front of the mirror, I managed to cope and later thrive with a newfound confidence. I was ready to tackle any challenge that came my way. And now a decade later, I witnessed

another cascade of calamities which included surviving a car accident, escaping a dangerous fall at a roller-rink and seeing the threat of retrenchments that has swept various nations and sectors with hardly any moments to catch our breath. With the surge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation and the constant blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, our realities are being warped before our eyes, and the “glory days” are seemingly fading like long-forgotten songs. The non-stop rise in petrol prices, inflation and the skyrocketing price of goods is a hard pill to swallow for everyone and bears so much consequences that we struggle to fully grasp. I can only imagine how the uncertain economic climate has affected young parents paying school fees or caring for their newborns which could all be even more difficult to manage with all the setbacks we face in our lives. If we’re not careful we could become a shell of our former selves and even appear unrecognisable to ourselves and our loved ones. But I find it’s at the most challenging times that we must rediscover our character, our tenacity and resilience in adversity. After I emerged from that swamp of anxiety that covered me in 2016, the lesson I learnt was that this experience has taught me how to remain calm under pressure and embrace the unpredictable nature of the future. I think the word that captures this definition is equanimity. Despite my thoughts of wondering whether my dad and I would lose our home, I decided to focus on what I could control and remember I’ve had my back against the ropes countless times and knocked out these obstacles like Mohammed Ali doing his iconic “rope-a-dope” technique. And now those fears that petrified me had not materialised and a new and exciting chapter awaits me. However, I have not arrived at this sense of peace by myself this year, it was a collective effort formed by my family, friends, my partner, colleagues and faith in God. So despite these treacherous waters we navigate like Odysseus trying to return home to his wife and children. I pray we keep our eyes on the windshield and not the rear view mirror as we ride on the road of life. As the poet Tom Waits said: “Don’t plant your bad days. They grow into weeks. The weeks grow into months. Before you know it, you got yourself a bad year. Take it from me – choke those little bad days. Choke ‘em down to nothing.” - KEANAN HARMSE
WHALE TAIL: The West Coast is renowned for its annual gathering of humpback whales, with well over a thousand individuals visiting the area each year. When reports emerged of early activity near Dassen Island, a calm, sunny day provided the perfect opportunity for a pre-season expedition to explore these remarkable waters. Noise pollution is ruining our peace Trolleys left out in I am writing to express my concern about the growing problem of noise pollution. While I understand that people want to enjoy themselves in their homes, there should be a limit to how much noise neighbours are expected to tolerate. Over weekends, residents are often forced to listen to loud music, shouting and parties that continue late into the night. For families with young children, shift workers and elderly residents, this can become extremely frustrating. Everyone has the right to enjoy their home, but that right should not come at the expense of someone else's peace. A little consideration can go a long way towards preventing unnecessary conflict. What makes the situation worse is that some
residents are reluctant to complain because they fear creating tension or damaging relationships with people who live nearby. We need to encourage a culture of respect and responsible behaviour in our communities. Residents should be mindful of noise levels, particularly during the evening and early morning hours. If you are hosting a gathering, let your neighbours know beforehand and turn down the volume at a reasonable time. These small gestures can prevent many disputes. Living in a community means sharing space with others. Respect should be a basic part of that arrangement. - Susan, BOTHASIG
Desalination: Promises without progress? I read Ben Groenewald’s letter in the TygerBurger of 30 September with great interest. I was pleased to realise that someone else is also concerned about the lack of progress with desalination to ensure long-term water security for Cape Town and the Western Cape. During and immediately after the last severe drought, when “Day Zero” predictions were being made, the authorities announced various plans to ensure water security, including desalination. We were satisfied that our leaders would follow through on their promises. Unfortunately, it seems that the good years that followed made them complacent. Nothing appears to have been done to lessen the impact of the next dry period, which, by all accounts, we may once again be facing this summer.
The authorities are silent about the progress of the plans they put forward. It is truly shocking to hear that all that has happened in the intervening years is that a site for a desalination plant has been identified. Clearly, desalination is no longer a priority. Once again, it seems to have been a typical political promise that has come to nothing. It is time for the City and provincial leadership to come forward and tell the people of Cape Town and the Western Cape openly what their intentions are regarding desalination. They must also provide clear timelines so that we can hold them accountable. They will be asking for our votes in November, so it is time for them to be honest and transparent if they want our support. - Francois Kloppers, WELGELEGEN
ing vanaf 1 Julie in gedagte. - Joe, E-POS

I refer to the letter 7 October issue of TygerBurger, “Where do all the trolleys go?” I live in Burgundy Estate and the trolley problem there is bad. I counted seven trolley’s outside the one complex. When the wind blows they roll into the road, into the traffic, very dangerous. I doubt I’m allowed to mention the chain store, where they originate from, but it’s a real problem in Burgundy. On a lighter note, the writer of the previous mail suggests maybe there’s a “trolley society”, where they discuss their journey, what about the ones that are parked alone the whole night, in the cold and wind, on a verge somewhere or construction site. Di Boshoff, BURGUNDY ESTATE
Our streets deserve better I have lived in this community for more than 20 years, and it saddens me to see how our streets and public spaces have deteriorated. From overflowing rubbish bins to potholes and neglected pavements, there are several issues that need urgent attention. Our neighbourhood should be a place where families can walk safely, children can play outdoors and older residents can enjoy their surroundings without worrying about tripping over broken pavements or stepping into potholes. While I understand that the municipality has many responsibilities and that budgets are limited, basic maintenance should remain a priority. Small problems often become bigger and more expensive to fix when they are ignored for too long. Residents also have a responsibility to keep the area clean. Dumping rubbish illegally, leaving household waste next to bins and failing to clean up after pets only make matters worse. I believe we can make a difference if residents and the municipality work together. Community members should report problems, participate in clean-up initiatives and take pride in their surroundings. We all want to live in a neighbourhood we can be proud of. Surely, keeping our streets clean, safe and well maintained is a reasonable expectation. - Maria, PAROW

Expo doubles in size at CTICC
T
he Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon powered by BYD has announced a three-year partnership with the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), with runners set to benefit from a significantly expanded Race Pack Collection and Expo in 2027. The Expo will take place at CTICC 1, in Halls 1 to 4, from Thursday 1 April, to Saturday 3 April 2027, bringing together thousands of runners, exhibitors and supporters ahead of one of South Africa’s most iconic road-running events. As part of the partnership, the floor space allocated to the Race Pack Collection and Expo will more than double compared with the 2026 Expo. The additional space will allow organisers to broaden the offering, with a particular focus on road running, while improving the flow and efficiency of race pack collection. A BIGGER RACE-WEEK EXPERIENCE The partnership brings together the CTICC’s event-hosting facilities and the heritage of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, widely known as the “World’s Most Beautiful Marathon”.Chris Goldschmidt, chair of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, said the agreement represented an important step in the event’s ongoing efforts to improve the experience for runners. “The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon powered by BYD has always been about delivering an exceptional experience for our runners, both on and off the road. The CTICC provides us with an outstanding environment in which to welcome our runners to Cape Town and build the excitement ahead of race day,” he said. Goldschmidt said the three-year agreement would allow organisers to

develop the Race Pack Collection and Expo over the longer term. “Doubling the floor space from 2027 is particularly exciting, as it will allow us to create a bigger, better and more runnerfocused experience while making race pack collection as seamless and enjoyable as possible,” he said. MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXHIBITORS Wade Bromfield, event director of the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon, said the larger footprint and additional infrastructure would help organisers further develop the Expo. “The CTICC is a world-class venue that aligns perfectly with our long-term vision for the Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon. Following a successful first year together, we’re pleased to extend the partnership for a further three years,” he said. Bromfield said the increased space would allow organisers to expand the offering for runners while creating
greater opportunities for partners and exhibitors.“This partnership gives us a platform to grow, innovate and continue raising the standard of the overall TTOM experience,” he said. Exhibitor applications for the 2027 Race Pack Collection and Expo open on Monday, 12 October 2026. Interested businesses and organisations can submit applications by emailing liezle@showoff. co.za. RUGBY GOLD CUP
Durbell reach the semis AVRIL FILLIES urbell progressed to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup after beating Roses United from Boland 52-17 on Saturday 10 October on Pelikaan Park in Wellington. United learned valuable lessons from this encounter and was gracious in their defeat by acknowledging that the visitors were the better team on the day. They wished them well in their further endeavours in the competition. Durbell used all their opportunities to score tries and kept the scoreboard rolling. When the floodgates opened the home side had no ammunition to counter the onslaught and was behind 28-5 at half-time. Durbell will now play against College Rovers of Durban in the semi-final on Saturday 17 October and the winner of this encounter will be the representative
D
