School transfer applications open T

he Western Cape Education Department (WCED) opened its school transfer applications on 3 August, for learners in Grades 2 to 7 and 9 to 12. Applications will run until 17 August for the 2027 school year. Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond, said those wanting to move their child next year should submit their applications during this period and advised that the application process has been adjusted. Parents need to check whether they should apply online or directly at a school or district office, depending on their circumstances. Online applications are available only to learners who meet specific transfer criteria. Parents whose situations do not qualify will need to apply directly to the school they want their child to attend. WHO CAN APPLY ONLINE Parents may submit an online transfer application if any of the following apply: The learner has reached the highest grade offered by their current school, such as a school that only goes up to Grade 3 or Grade 9. A parent or caregiver has moved employment to another area, making a school change necessary. The family has moved home to a different area. Online applications can be submitted through the WCED admissions website at admissions.westerncape.gov.za. Parents who have not used the system before will need to create an account first.

WHEN TO APPLY DIRECTLY AT A SCHOOL Parents who want to move their child purely because they prefer another school, and who do not meet any of the online criteria, must apply directly to the school of their choice using a hard-copy transfer request form.

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OPENS 2027 SCHOOL TRANSFERS UNTIL 17 AUGUST Certain applications must also be submitted in hard copy at the school only, due to their sensitive nature. These include cases where: There is a documented concern about the learner's safety, wellbeing or protection; the learner needs access to medical or psychological treatment that is not reasonably available near their current school, and supporting documents must accompany the application; or the learner is a ward of the State under the care of an appointed guardian or statutory authority. Transfer request forms are available from the Resources section of the admissions website, schools and district offices. Parents and caregivers will need to supply the following supporting documents: The learner's latest school report. An ID, birth certificate, passport, study permit, proof of application or police affidavit. Proof of residential address or a police affidavit. GRADE R, 1 AND 8 ADMISSIONS The department said schools are currently finalising admission lists and confirming placements for Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for 2027. Parents who have not yet applied for these grades are urged to contact their district office. The online admissions platform for Grade R, 1 and 8 applications is currently closed. Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on Koeberg Road RICHARD ROBERTS A 21-year-old man appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court last Thursday following his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident in Milnerton, two days before which claimed the life of a woman. Milnerton police spokesperson Capt Nopaya Madyibi said the man is facing charges of culpable homicide following his arrest on Tuesday 4 August. The incident occurred earlier the day at the corners of Koeberg and Blaauberg road. “It is alleged that the 30-year-old deceased female was crossing the road at the Astron Reﬁnery

in Milnerton when a black BMW came down the MyCiti bus lane at a high speed and knocked her. He failed to stop. “A witness in the area chased the driver and caught the suspect,” says Madyibi. The man was then arrested by Milnerton police officers. The woman was declared deceased at the scene. The Western Cape police’s office has conﬁrmed that a case of culpable homicide had been opened following the hit-and-run and said the investigation is ongoing.

Ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde said she was aware of the outage and was working to ensure the extent of the disruption was brought to Eskom’s attention. Litterboom catches A woman brings hope to little paws 94 tons of waste

itterboom prevents 94 tons of waste from entering Black River A partnership between the City of Cape Town and environmental non-profit organisation The Litterboom Project (TLP) has prevented nearly 94 tons of waste from flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Between March and June 2026 three litterbooms in the Black River system intercepted 93 963 kg of waste before it could reach the ocean. Eight full-time river wardens monitored and maintained the waste interceptors daily while also carrying out clean-up operations across four priority waterways. WASTE INTERCEPTED BEFORE REACHING OCEAN The City’s grant restored full-time operations at the Jakkelsvlei, Bloemvlei Canal and Vygieskraal Canal litterboom sites, while also establishing full-time waste interception at the Bokmakierie Canal. The initiative forms part of the City’s efforts to tackle pollution in waterways before waste can make its way downstream and ultimately into the Atlantic. City Mayco member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said the results demonstrated the value of partnerships in tackling pollution. “Intercepting nearly 94 tons of waste before it reaches the ocean shows the undeniable power of our partnerships on the ground,” he said. “Interceptors and dedicated river wardens are essential, but to protect our catchments for the long term, we must run a dual-track strategy.” Badroodien said the City was also

PROJECT INTERCEPTS POLLUTION IN WATERWAYS focusing on the socio-economic factors contributing to waste in high-density communities. “Alongside our ongoing infrastructure efforts with partners like The Litterboom Project we are focusing on the socioeconomic drivers of waste in high-density areas,” he said. He said initiatives such as waste-forgoods swap shops and the expansion of the recycling market could provide residents with economic incentives while helping to keep waterways clean. “By expanding Urban Waste Management initiatives like waste-forgoods swop shops led by the City and unlocking the broader recycling market, we can turn river protection into direct economic value for our residents,” said Badroodien. “It takes both dedicated containment and community-driven incentives to keep our waterways clean.” PARTNERSHIP CREATES JOBS The initiative has also delivered benefits beyond waste interception. Recyclable materials recovered through the programme were diverted from landfill and incorporated into new products through TLP’s circular economy programme. The grant also sustained eight local employment opportunities, combining environmental protection with socioeconomic benefits.

TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS While South Africans marked Women’s Day over the weekend, one local woman spent it doing what has become close to her heart – helping animals find families of their own. Puppies and kittens looking for homes were among the weekend visitors at Majik Forest Shopping Centre in Van Riebeeckshof, where Loving Paws Rescue held an adoption day. Behind the initiative is founder Nadia Diedricks from Brackenfell, whose love for animals led her from dropping off bags of dog food after work to helping animals in communities where owners often struggle to afford their care. The weekend adoption day gave shoppers an opportunity to meet, cuddle and play with some of the animals looking for homes. And a few little paws may have found their match. “You can scroll past a picture, but when you walk in and touch them, it is difficult to walk past,” Diedricks said. IT STARTED WITH WHAT SHE SAW Diedricks’ journey into animal rescue started about two-and-a-half years ago. While travelling through Kuils River to write exams, she regularly saw pregnant dogs, puppies and animals suffering from mange and illness. She found herself seeing the same need each time she passed through the area. “I literally prayed and said, ‘Just show me what to do, because I can’t handle this anymore’.” So she started doing what she could. She asked for donations, collected food

and deworming treatments and began dropping them off in the community. “I would pass there after work and drop off a few bags of food,” she said. Eventually, people began approaching her with puppies they could not keep. “That is how the puppy thing started.” What started with a few bags of food grew into Loving Paws Rescue. HELPING WHERE SHE CAN Diedricks said her experience has also taught her not to judge families who may be struggling to care for their pets. “Some of them do love animals, but they just can’t afford it,” she said. Sterilisation has therefore become an important part of the work, particularly in communities where unwanted litters can quickly add to the number of animals needing homes. “It is an ongoing thing. You think you have your area covered and then, when you look again, there is another pregnant mommy or a mommy with babies.” For Diedricks, another part of changing this is teaching children how to treat animals.

Beware of traffic-ﬁne scam Councillor urges The City of Cape Town’s traffic services have warned people not to fall for a scam in which a demand is made to pay a fine within 24 hours or face legal action. In a statement issued on Wednesday (5 August) the City's Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said it was aware of the resurgence of the scam, which involves emails or text messages being sent to motorists demanding they pay the fine. “We want to remind the public please to be careful and verify notices received before making payment or sharing their details. In Cape Town infringement notices are sent via post and MMS, with followup SMS reminders. They will include a

picture of the fine notice and links to two online platforms.” Jacobs said if motorists do receive a fine they should check the details closely, including whether they were in fact in the area mentioned, or appear in the photograph on the day on which the infringement occurred. Motorists can also visit their nearest driving-licence testing centre or one of the City’s fine payment points to check the validity of the fine. omelessness is a complex challenge and Ward 107 councillor Jonathan Mills says long-term solutions need more than just removing people from hotspots. He said homelessness was a systemic issue connected to a range of social factors, including addiction, mental health challenges, family estrangement and personal trauma. According to Mills, the City continues to respond to homelessness through clean-ups, attending known hotspots and supporting community organisations working in affected areas. “Homelessness is a systemic problem that no liberal country, no matter how wealthy or not, has solved,” he said. “The issue is connected to everything from addiction to mental health, estranged families and personal traumas.” He said the situation was complicated by well-meaning residents who give food, shelter or money without connecting people to programmes aimed at addressing the underlying causes of homelessness. “But just because we can't wish it away, we don't ignore it either. We will continue to attend the hotspots, we will continue to clean, we will continue to support community groups — and we will not stop,” he said. Mills also acknowledged the difficulty of managing public spaces where people experiencing homelessness may move from one location to another following patrols or clean-up operations. “The homeless are also very resourceful — when we patrol one spot they go to another, when we go there they come back,” he said. He added that law enforcement resources were limited, with officers also required to respond to emergencies and other incidents. “Law enforcement cannot be on every corner at every moment, and they cannot stop attending to emergency calls to watch land while it is empty,” he said.

SHELTER PLANS IN PROGRESS Mills rejected suggestions that the City was simply ignoring the issue, pointing to ongoing interventions in Ward 107. “If the City was really doing nothing, this area would have been over-run years ago,” he said. On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women marched through the streets of Pretoria with a simple yet powerful message: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo — you strike a woman, you strike a rock”. This happened long before I was born. I was fortunate enough to be raised by another remarkable woman: my own mother. She taught me resilience, compassion and quiet strength, not through speeches, but through the example she set every single day. Women like her, and the thousands who marched before her, helped shape the world we have the privilege of living in today. I say this without taking anything away from the brave men and fathers who also have a special place in our lives. But Sunday belonged to the women who have carried families, communities, businesses and our country forward, often without fanfare and always with extraordinary courage.

To the women of 1956 who marched and refused to be silenced, and to the women of today who continue to embody that same spirit: thank you. The sales teams opening doors and building trusted relationships. The editors shaping narratives with precision and heart. The digital teams growing audiences across the country. Op 26 Junie het ek 60 geword en begin met my aansoek om 'n Sassa-pensioentoelae. Op 19 Junie besoek ek Sassa se Bellville-kantoor naby Nobelpark — met al die nodige dokumente, gereed in my hand. By ontvangs word 'n papier oor die toonbank geskuif met al die nodige dokumente afgemerk wat ek benodig. Nadat ek die amptenaar ingelig het ek wil aansoek doen om 'n toelae, word ek aangesê om Maandag 21 Junie terug te kom. Let wel, net 'n handjievol mense het in daardie stadium gewag om gehelp te word. Op 21 Junie daag ek om 07:00 op en gaan na die ingang waar 'n sekuriteitsbeampte my voorkeer. Ek wys hom die papier wat ek die vorige Vrydag van 'n beampte gekry het en word toegelaat om op 'n stoel by die ingang te sit. Tussen halfnege en nege-uur word die aansoekers ingelig dat slegs diegene met 'n afspraak gehelp gaan word. Die res moet afsprake maak. Weer eens terug in 'n ry vir 'n afspraak. Tydens my beurt om 'n afspraak te maak, lig ek die beampte in dat ons nuwe aansoekers onkundig is met die prosedure en sy my al die vorige Vrydag van 'n afspraakdatum kon voorsien het of ingelig het dat ek eers een moet maak. Die afspraak word toe gemaak vir Maandag 20 Julie. Kwart voor ses neem ek my plek in die ry in — wat amper strek tot by Ou Paarlweg. Tussen die gesels deur verneem ek dat party mense daar geslaap het of al van 03:00 gearriveer het in die hoop om gehelp te

word. Teen 06:20 word ons ingedeel in drie groepe — navrae, vingerafdrukke en laastens, aansoekers. Aansoekers moet binne gaan sit en hul beurt afwag om 'n nommer te kry. Die ander twee groepe moet buite in die koue sit en wag. Teen omstreeks 15:00 besef ons dat ons nie voor 16:00, wat toemaaktyd is, gehelp gaan word nie. In daardie stadium was ons ongeveer 47 mense wat sit en wag. Net ná 16:00 het 'n beampte ons ingelig dat ons hele groep Vrydag 06:00 moet terugkom, dan sal ons gehelp word. Groen identiteitsboekies, wat wettig is, word ook nie meer aanvaar deur die nuwe stelsel nie en diegene wat dit het moet dus nuwe smart-identiteitskaarte kry voor hulle gehelp kan word. Aangesien ek Vrydag nie weer vir 'n hele dag daar kan sit nie, sal ek maar nog 'n tydjie sonder Sassa se inkomste moet klaarkom en sal my kinders hul moeder vir nog 'n rukkie moet onderhou. ‘n Sassa-aansoek is 'n absolute nagmerrie met 'n stelsel wat nie 100% werk nie, asook kantore wat onderbeman is. Dalk, as die ministers 'n slag uit hul aircon-kantore en luukse voertuie kom en 'n slag saam met Sassa-aansoekers in die donker, koue en soms reën in rye kom staan, sal hulle besef waardeur applikante vir 'n aalmoes moet gaan om darem vir 'n gedeelte van die maand te kan eet. Good service above and beyond We are often quick to write letters or post comments when public service falls short, but less inclined to acknowledge those who go the extra mile. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to subcouncil manager 3, Roxanne Moses, for her assistance during the recent upgrade of the Theo Marais Park boundary wall. The project initially caused unnecessary concern and frustration among residents due to shortcomings in public participation and communication. It was at this point that Roxanne's intervention proved invaluable. She took the time to meet with residents, listened to our concerns, and facilitated engagement between the project manager, the ward councillor Anthony Bernadie, and the community. Her calm, professional approach helped restore confidence in the process and ensured that all parties worked together towards a practical and mutually acceptable solution. As a result, the necessary repairs were completed promptly and efficiently, leaving residents satisfied with the outcome. Throughout the process, Roxanne demonstrated professionalism, responsiveness, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving the community. Thank you Sixty60 driver for you kindness during break down I wanted to share a small but meaningful moment that reminded me just how much kindness still exists in our community. Last night I broke down on Jip de Jager near Loevenstein and found myself standing outside my car waiting for friends to come and help. Out of nowhere, a Checkers Sixty60 driver pulled over. He had already ﬁnished his shift and was heading home, but when he noticed me, he actually turned

back to come check on me. He asked if I was okay and when I explained that help was on the way, he still offered to stay with me until my friends arrived. I was honestly so touched that someone would take time out of their evening like that – not just to stop, but to genuinely care. I even worried that I might be delaying him, only for him to tell me he was already done for the day. What stayed with me most was what he said: “We

need to help one another.” Simple words, but he had already shown exactly what that means through his actions. It was such a powerful reminder that there are still good people out there — and that people, at their core, are good. God help taxpaying residents if bureaucrats manage

to get control of Cape Town’s railways. Addictive taxation highlights is an economic feedback loop in which governments become ﬁnancially dependent on revenues generated from systemic revenue collected by any and all means. While those commuting between their downtown executive suites and Winelands retreats will not care too much, this is just another nail in the ﬁnancial coffin of the average Capetonian. Cape Town libraries recover R4.7m in overdue items

he City of Cape Town said on Tuesday 4 August that their libraries have received a total of 37 422 overdue items back during its Fine Free Weeks. According to the City the cost of the overdue items was R4 767 836,51. “The number proves just how popular our Fine Free Weeks are. It is an opportunity for patrons to return books and other items without paying a fine for late returns. “Returning books allows others to also experience reading their favourite book. Our libraries have so much to offer, and I would like to invite residents to visit their local library to enjoy a safe reading space and so much more,” said Francine Higham, Mayco member for community services and health. fter months of uncertainty over an emergency evacuation and a shortage of specialised polar diesel the SA Agulhas II has finally set sail from Cape Town for Marion Island, marking the return of South Africa’s scientific research team to the remote sub-Antarctic island. The vessel is carrying the 83rd Marion Island Overwintering Team, known as M83, which comprises about 20 scientists, researchers and specialists who will spend the next eight months continuing South Africa’s research programmes on the island. The voyage follows the temporary closure of the Marion Island research base at the end of May after the annual resupply and team rotation mission was disrupted by a shortage of polar diesel. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment David Maynier was led the official send-off of the SA Agulhas II on Monday 3 August, as the vessel prepared to resume the mission. Maynier said the department had worked to ensure the team could return to Marion Island after they were evacuated earlier this year. “The department has pulled out all the stops to ensure that our team get back to Marion Island after being evacuated earlier this year because of a shortage of polar diesel,” he said. “Of course, we’ll have our scientists returning, about 20 scientists, who will be contributing to world-class research programmes.” FUEL CRISIS FORCED EVACUATION The return of the team comes after the previous Marion Island research base was temporarily closed following an increasingly difficult fuel situation. TygerBurger previously reported the SA Agulhas II was initially expected to leave Cape Town earlier in the year to relieve researchers who had been stationed on Marion Island since April 2025. However, the mission was delayed after the vessel only received a shipment of the specialised polar diesel required for Antarctic and sub-Antarctic operations on 1 May. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment attributed the delay primarily to a global scarcity of fuel products linked to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. At the time, the research base had enough polar diesel reserves to last until

around 20 May, while food supplies were expected to last for approximately two months. Backup petrol generators and nine stocked research huts were also available across the island to support emergency requirements if necessary. The newly delivered polar diesel also had to undergo testing and mixing to ensure it would not crystallise or freeze in the extreme cold conditions experienced in the region. The fuel crisis ultimately led to the evacuation of personnel from the island and the temporary closure of the research base, putting the annual handover of researchers on hold. M83 TEAM RESUMES RESEARCH With the SA Agulhas II now under way, the M83 team will take over the next phase of the island’s research programme. The team includes members from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the South African Weather Service, the South African National Space Agency, the South African Polar Research Infrastructure and BirdLife South Africa’s Mouse-Free Marion Project. Their work will contribute to South Africa’s internationally respected scientific programmes in the Southern Ocean, covering environmental, meteorological and wildlife research. FIVE-DAY JOURNEY TO MARION Marion Island, situated about 1 920km southeast of Cape Town, is an uninhabited, rocky island covering approximately 290 square kilometres. Despite its remote location, it is an important base for longterm environmental and meteorological research. The journey from Cape Town to Marion Island takes about five days. For the M83 team, the voyage marks the long-awaited return to the island and the resumption of research after a challenging period that saw the previous team evacuated and the research base temporarily closed. The SA Agulhas II’s departure now puts the annual overwintering programme back on course, with the new team set to spend the coming months carrying out research in one of South Africa’s most remote scientific outposts.

The City of Cape Town has dismissed claims that it plans to hit motorists with congestion charges, with Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas saying such measures are off the table until Cape Town’s public transport is up to scratch, and that current national legislation doesn’t even allow for it. This comes after Cape Independence Party (CAPEXIT) last week slammed the City’s proposed Travel Demand Management (TDM) Strategy as an Orwellian dystopia, warning it would punish motorists with higher parking fees, congestion charges and financial penalties simply for driving. ONLY IN THEORY In his council speech in the July sitting, the party’s leader Jack Miller said the City’s strategy would burden motorists with unnecessary costs and restrictions. The strategy, approved by Council last month after a public participation process in October and November 2025, proposes measures to reduce traffic congestion, commuting times and carbon emissions. Miller argued the proposal would restrict the movement of Cape Town drivers rather than address the root causes of traffic. “We are presented with a strategy to control and manage the demand that Capetonians have to travel. “And of course, the answer is various forms of punishment and more taxation,” he said in his speech. He referred to what is called “pricing measures” listed in the document that proposes to make parking more expensive for motorists driving during peak traffic times, and to penalise drivers for driving by themselves in their own car. “How exactly the City intends to implement these policies one can only imagine would require fleets of CCTV

cameras tracking and monitoring the facial biometrics of drivers, counting the number of people in each car, and calculating how much to fine them at the end of the month depending on what hours of the day they were driving,” he said.

DECONGESTING ROADS “If the City really wants to decongest the roads, they can stop pushing high density low cost housing into every open crack, corner and crevice of Cape Town, and spending 75% of our budget on free handouts that invite economic migrants to come get a free house, free electricity and free water, and of course add to the overflowing traffic and collapsing water and sanitation infrastructure.” In response, Mayco member for the Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said to TygerBurger: “A congestion charge is not something the City is introducing now, or in the near future. Also, current national legislation does not make provision for such a system.” Quintas said congestion charging is “theoretical” and only to be considered once an effective, reliable and wellintegrated public transport system and enabling legislation are in place. “A congestion charge is mentioned as one of several long-term possibilities that may be considered only after we have achieved our primary goal of providing a reliable, efficient, and city-wide public transport network that serves as a viable alternative to private cars. We are a long way off,” Quintas told TygerBurger. “As for parking fees, the City charges R4,80 for every 15 minutes for the use of on-street parking bays in areas where the demand for parking is high. “These are mostly business districts. Parking management ensures a turnover of parking bays and prevents any one motorist from occupying a parking space for extended periods.”

The mayor announced that he has lodged an intergovernmental dispute in the bid for expanded powers for Metro Police. “We now await dates from his office to commence mandatory mediation under the formal intergovernmental dispute I declared this week. The Minister states that it is necessary to ‘build a cross-party consensus’ on the matter. It is not clear what he means. He is the Minister. All that is needed is for him to show leadership and amend the Police Act Amendment Bill he has tabled in Parliament. It is unclear what further consensus-building is needed, and this sounds like an effort to delay doing the right thing,” says Hill-Lewis.

GOOD FAITH SOLUTION According to Hill-Lewis, the upcoming dispute mediation is an opportunity to put the residents of Cape Town first and find a good-faith solution that avoids the courts. “We must make full use of all policing resources in Cape Town as the police are under severe pressure and really do need our Metro Police’s help to gain more convictions for gang, gun and drug crime. We refuse to accept that communities must live in daily fear of violent crime. The time has come to ‘catch and convict’, which our Metro Police stand ready to do in support of the police and the National Prosecuting Authority,” says Hill-Lewis. LEGAL ADVICE In response to Cachalia’s remark that he received legal advice that certain proposals made by the City may conflict with Section 205 of the Constitution, HillLewis says the police’s interpretation of Section 205 has never been communicated

CITY BIDS FOR INVESTIGATIVE POWERS to the City across numerous engagements and correspondence. “The only legal advice referred to by Cachalia previously is that the Police Act requires amendment before regulations can be issued to expand Metro Police investigative powers. “To ensure our upcoming mediation is meaningful, we would welcome the Acting Minister sharing the legal advice he has on the extent to which the Police Act currently complies with the municipal policing powers anticipated in the Constitution. Section 205 of the Constitution says that the Police Act must establish a framework for policing powers and functions to be discharged by a police service in the local government sphere ‘where this is appropriate’. We have demonstrated, over and over, that it is indeed appropriate here in Cape Town — that our Metro Police are prepared, resourced and ready to take on investigations for specific crimes,” says Hill-Lewis. Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith says expanding policing powers to non-police agencies has been done before and is not a new request. “Previously, Municipal Peace Officers were granted additional crime prevention powers in 2018 that led to the establishment of LEAP, which has without a doubt proved that local government can make a significant impact when given the opportunity. Recently, LEAP made a significant arrest, confiscating four semi-automatic rifles in Nyanga, again reminding all of the crucial role they play within our most vulnerable communities. The City is in a position to help the police; in fact, we are already doing so through our SSIU investigations unit and SSIMS information management department. Our communities are bleeding and if we can stop the flow of illegal firearms, we can significantly decrease violent crime,” says Smith.

Smith gives overview of law enforcement’s year The City's Law Enforcement department has seen a 70% surge in arrests in the past year, along with increases in enforcement categories. They City says the increases are partly due to the Neighbourhood Safety Officers (NSO) initiative, and the establishment of the anti-hijacking unit. The Metro Police Department is in its 25th year of operations. The first intake of recruits started active duty in December 2001. Over time, numerous specialised units have been introduced, including the K9 and Equestrian units, the Gang and Drug Task Team, the Strategic Surveillance Unit (CCTV), and the Tactical Response Unit. In September 2025, the Metro Police Department welcomed 700 new recruits who have been deployed in 99 municipal wards as Neighbourhood Safety Officers. The following month, 44 additional Metro Police officers started working on a shift rotation to shore up patrols on the N2 and surrounds. In November, an increase in hijacking incidents involving City-owned vehicles led to the establishment of the Anti-Hijacking Unit, focusing on vehicle recoveries. “I am pleased to note the increases in key categories, which are indicative of consistent efforts to drive down crime rates and hold those responsible to account within our limited scope. The amount of narcotics removed from our streets has nearly doubled, and there have

been notable gains, too, in the recovery of illegal firearms and ammunition, along with stolen vehicles. “While these are incredible successes worth noting, we need to work towards improving conviction rates. The City has placed on record its willingness and ability to assist, if granted expanded powers for our Metro Police Department, and we are now pursuing further steps to bring this to a head with national government,” said Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. ATTACKS ON STAFF A note of concern is the consistent increase in the number of attacks on staff. These have nearly doubled in the past few years, from 64 incidents in the 2022/23 financial year to 116 in 2025/26. “I struggle to understand how people can deliberately turn on the very ones who put their lives on the line to make communities safer, and yet it is a reality that our staff face far too often. In fact, on average, a Metro Police officer is targeted in some way every three days. That's not including our other enforcement and emergency services. The fact is that it's but a small number of people who choose to protect the bad guys, instead of helping the good guys. In doing so, they are putting entire communities at risk from criminals who remain free to continue their illegal deeds,' added Smith.

Long-acting HIV meds rolled out

early nine out of every ten people receiving long-acting Lenacapavir injections choose pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the first time. Between 8 June and 24 July this year healthcare workers administered 2 339 Lenacapavir injections across 22 public health facilities to the communities in the Metro with the highest HIV burden. Of these, 2 049 (87,6%) were people who were not previously taking oral PrEP, meaning the programme is reaching thousands of residents who were previously not using long-acting HIV prevention. Besides Lenacapavir, a twice a year injection, pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP can also be taken as daily prescription pill which has been available in South Africa since 2016. Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the early results demonstrate the value of giving people more choice in how they protect themselves against HIV. “One of our greatest opportunities to reduce new HIV infections is to ensure that more

What is particularly encouraging about these early results is that almost 88% of people receiving Lenacapavir are new to PrEP. It is administered as an injection every six months. Lenacapavir is not a vaccine, but an HIV prevention medicine. The next consignment of Lenacapavir from the national Department of Health is expected

during the first week of August following the completion of the required post-importation quality testing. In the interim, available stock continues to be carefully managed while oral PrEP remains readily available as an effective HIV prevention option. Wenger said: “These early results give us real confidence that long-acting HIV prevention can help us reach more people, particularly those who have found daily oral PrEP difficult to use consistently. “As we continue to expand access to Lenacapavir, our focus remains clear: ensuring that every eligible resident has access to the HIV prevention option that works best for them. Every HIV infection we prevent is an opportunity to help someone live a longer, healthier life, and it brings us one step closer to ending HIV as a public health threat.” HOW TO ACCESS Residents who would like to find out whether they are eligible for Lenacapavir are encouraged to speak to healthcare workers at

enya's Daisilah Jerono celebrated her South African racing debut in style, claiming gold at the Totalsports Women's Race Cape Town in 31:29, as she joined thousands of women in celebrating National Women's Day on Sunday, 9 August. Currently ranked No 7 in the world for the half marathon in 2026, following her impressive 1:05:21 performance in Berlin, Jerono is also the second-fastest Kenyan over the distance this year. With the goal of bettering her personal best, Jerono achieved just that while claiming the top spot on the podium. "The race was tough. It was windy, with a few ups and downs, but I am happy to have run today," says Jerono. "This is my first time in South Africa. I didn't come with the idea of winning; I came to see where I am in my training. The runners were so cheerful, and I really liked how they cheered for us. I am so happy to win today. I was not expecting it; it's by God's grace. God willing, maybe I'll come back next year." Fellow campatriot Faith Cherono came in second, while Neheng Khatala of Lesotho finished third. The 2026 Totalsports Women's Race Cape Town attracted 10 000 entrants, bringing women of all ages and abilities together to celebrate women, fitness and community while supporting PinkDrive. Reflecting on a memorable day of racing, Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, praised both the elite performances and the incredible spirit shown by thousands of participants.
