ReThinkTheStink has called on the City of Cape Town to act urgently to restore Lagoon Beach and the Milnerton Lagoon to a safe and healthy state.
In a statement entitled “Lagoon Beach: How much longer must we wait?” Peter Walsh from ReThinkTheStink said a letter sent directly to the Speaker of the City of Cape Town in August had not received a reply Families and children, he said, continue to swim in polluted waters without a clear warning, despite repeated requests for proper signage over the past 18 months

The search for missing Bloubergstrand kite surfer Graham Howes (38) came to an end on Monday 8 September, when his body was recovered at sea following extensive air, land and sea operations
The accomplished kite surfer went missing on Sunday afternoon after launching from Eden on the Bay He was last seen around 13:00 on a blueand-black kite-board with a white kite sail carrying red writing, wearing a black wetsuit
When he failed to return by late afternoon his family raised the alarm

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the kite-surf sail and board were first located and recovered at sea on Monday morning
Later that day the crew of a local motor yacht, which had also joined the search, located and recovered Howes’ body in the designated search area north-west of Bloubergstrand towards Dassen Island
The body was taken into the care of the police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services

Last week was Kidney Awareness Week, and I couldn't help but think of Asanda Hlamandana, a young skilled, passionate and dedicated teacher with a Master's degree (yes, she would want me to mention that she has Masters), whose passion for teaching has always inspired her learners I've watched her create an inclusive learner-focused learning environment, celebrate their journeys, and helping them reach not only their academic goals
Life quakes are painful, but they are clarifying They strip away distractions, forcing us to confront what we've ignored They challenge us to grow, to change, and to emerge stronger My ICU stay was not just a brush with mortality, it was a chance to redefine priorities, appreciate the little things, and embrace life fully Health is freedom For me? It's freedom to breathe without struggle, to move without pain, to pursue dreams, to nurture relationships, and to experience joy So, take this as my reminder to you, and to myself, cherish your health Protect it Honour it Don't wait for a life quake to shake you awake Make time for rest Eat mindfully Move your body

Turns out the grass is not greener in Oakdale
My wife and I recently moved from Parow to Oakdale in Bellville Our primary motivation was the safety, security and relative tranquility in the area
Imagine our shock when we discovered that prostitutes are plying their trade in broad daylight literally next to our complex on the corner of Sydney and Kingsmead Streets
Needless to say, we were shocked to the core! We felt horribly betrayed since nobody ever alerted us to this scourge
Recycling efforts under threat
The waste diversion initiative by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology ( CPUT goes green , TygerBurger 27 August) is indeed a noble environmental sustainable project If only Grant Twigg Mayco member for urban waste management, quietly rightly praised the zero-waste project Yet, the question remains: is it going to remain sustainable?
Take for instance the projects promoted by the City over the years! When wheelie bins were introduced, residents received pamphlets as to what could, or could not, be dumped in them It even provided special bins in certain areas for recyclable materials
There was a time when recycling was the in-thing when many businesses venues allowed drop-off points for certain items - including fluorescent tubes, batteries, etc
No longer! And in the interim, as society finds the pleasures of life more attractive, we now even dump highly toxic items of all sorts in the convenient wheelie bin Even asbestos

There is a significant increase in potholes in the Goodwood area Many potholes are resembling craters, that will do damage to vehicles, and will evidently cause incidents

The Table View community turned out in full force this past weekend for the Waddle Walk, a charity event organised by Alex du Plessis, a Grade 6 learner at Elkanah House

The walk formed part of the 12-yearold’s “Reach Challenge”, a programme offered to Grade 6 learners to encourage community service and leadership
Participants took on a 2-4 km route, with pets, prams and mobility aids all welcomed

Alex led the initiative with remarkable dedication, receiving support from his schoolmates and the broader community
A group of 15 Elkanah High School learners volunteered as marshals, helping to keep the event safe and organised
A special photo frame, donated by the family of one of Alex’s classmates, added a festive touch as walkers stopped for pictures along the way
The local Ward councillors Jonathan Mills and Sue van der Linde also joined the event and shared words of encouragement, praising Alex and the young volunteers for their commitment to

The fundraiser was hosted in support of the mission of The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) to rescue and rehabilitate seabirds, particularly the critically-endangered African penguin
In all, the Waddle Walk had raised approximately R16 000 “What Alex achieved was nothing short of incredible,” a Sanccob representative said “He showed young people have the power to make a difference, and his efforts will go a long way in helping to protect our seabirds ”
The atmosphere on the day was filled with exercise, laughter and purpose
Families, friends and supporters came together for a healthy morning outdoors and a cause that mattered deeply Alex’s Waddle Walk stood as a reminder that conservation begins at a community level, and that even the youngest voices can inspire change
