Standingupfor mentalhealth

As the stigma surrounding mental illness among South African healthcare workers starts to break down, initiatives like CrazySocks4Docs is leading the charge to create a culture of openness, support and action

Spearheaded locally by the Ithemba Foundation, a non-profit entity dedicated to raising awareness of depression as a biological illness and raising funds for research on depression, the CrazySocks4Docs campaign encourages people to wear mismatched or brightly coloured socks to show solidarity with healthcare workers and students in the medicine and health sciences facing mental health challenges and, or living with a mental illness

This initiative, which was launched by Australian cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood, serves as a vibrant reminder that it is okay not to be okay

Observed annually on the first Friday of June, CrazySocks4Docs day has grown into a national movement The Ithemba Foundation partners with ten Medicine and Health Sciences faculties across South Africa – including Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as healthcare provider Netcare to encourage students, lecturers and healthcare workers to participate in this uplifting and visible show of support

Prof Lizette Rabe, founder of the Ithemba Foundation, said social media inevitably made her aware of Toogood’s campaign

RadioTygerberg hou opskop by SpectacleWorld

Tyger Valley Library hosts author

The Friends of Tyger Valley Library hosted the book launch of Woestynblom by Kristel Loots at Tyger Valley Library on Thursday 29 May

The event was successful with about 15 attendees in the cozy library including the Ward councillor, Ronel Viljoen The discussant, Nadine Petrick, asked, probed questions and involved the attendees in the discussions. Loots is a great conversationalist and

was even willing to read a passage out of her book to the eager audience that left everyone in stitches. Woestynblom tells the story of a feisty young woman who breaks away from the city to escape her overbearing parents and family secrets. Isabella, at heart, is a romantic in search of a man who can sweep her off her feet but instead of one Isabella is faced with a few interesting suitors.

CaperunnerconquersComrades

RICHARDROBERTS

RICHARD ROBERTS@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

After running nearly 1 600km from Cape Town to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), a Cape Town local has reached the goals he had set out to achieve - to run to, and to compete in this year's gruelling Comrades Marathon

The Comrades took place on Sunday 8 June, starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban

TygerBurger reported on Denver van der Bergh's plans to take on this challenge in March this year

Denver, a recovering drug addict and former patient at the Ramot Treatment Centre in Parow, told the newspaper back then that he wants to run to KZN and compete in the 12-hour marathon - dubbed the Serenity Run - for charity

The newspaper caught up with him again last week to hear how challenging his journey and run was He ran to Pietermaritzburg but explains that at one pointbetween Mossel Bay and George - he was forced to walk due to a knee and foot injury The trip between the two towns is 42km long and took him up to eight hours to complete "From there I continued to run again," he says

The first eight days, he says, was amazing "I was running freely, running basically six kilometres per hour The injury slowed me down a bit, but the

run was absolutely amazing

"In the Western Cape I was greeted by people in various towns, where they welcomed me in, and standing along the road with placards I was even offered food Some people brought me dinner and then also, in the Eastern Cape there is such an amazing running culture there

"People would stop along the route, just to offer you energy drinks and fruits, not even knowing who you are They also put me on their WhatsApp groups, so at various parts there would be runners who would join me, just to run with me for a few kilometres, especially through the more dangerous areas

"KwaZulu-Natal was absolutely amazing as well The views are spectacular, and the roads are nice for running as well," he explains

LEAPOFFAITH

He says he did not know what to expect when he undertook the run from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg "It was a leap of faith, in the hopes that I could fly, because for me it was all about spreading a little bit of hope, because there is such a lot of suffering and despair in our communities " I wanted to promote the idea that anything is possible, if you put your mind to it, and also to raise funds for those who cannot afford drug rehabilitation, he says The money is donated to Ramot

, y impossible, possible We are so, so proud of you You are the only human being who will run from the Western Cape, through the Eastern Cape, to KZN to run the Comrades You are such an inspiration of what can be done It is important to remember that we are always there for you through the good times as well as the bad times,” says Johannes Janse van Rensburg, manager at the centre

REFLECTIONS

During the morning Denver also shared his reflections and lessons from the road, reminding everyone that with belief, support, and purpose, transformation is truly possible, said Janse van Rensburg Denver says even though his body was aching at times, he was always in good spirits, because he was driven by the purpose to pay it forward

Denver completed the Comrades before, but this year was

different

"Several people said because I ran from Cape Town, the race would be easy, but it was the exact opposite Before the race you are supposed to rest so that you can go there with fresh legs I went there with extremely tired legs, with 1 600km in my legs

When the race started, after the first 20km, I realised that I am in the ultimate human race They do not call it that for nothing It tests you on all levels, body, mind, soul and in your spirit It tests you to your core

"I could also feel after that 20km how tired my legs were, but the support there was absolutely phenomenal The people keep cheering you on and that gets you through it," he says He says he wanted to finish strong

"I am here to compete, I am in a race, and I am going to run this race I wanted to finish strong,

as it was not a race against other people for me, but a race against myself, to better myself and to continue this journey of each day being better than I was the day before

"When I crossed the finish line, I was extremely proud of myself There was just that feeling of content My whole life, especially as an addict, I used to feel inferior, I used to put myself down and thought less of myself and put other people on a pedestal

“So, this was redemption for me, I got to know myself throughout this whole journey and I realised that I am actually strong, that there is a fire that is burning inside of me and I have determination, that I am persistent and that I am stronger than I think I am I am enough I am so proud of myself, and will never think less of myself ever again," Denver says

Modern adaption of poignant play

Nothing is quite as it seems in Austrian Arthur Schnitzler’s provocative play, La Ronde, coming to the Baxter Studio stage from Friday 20 June to Saturday 12 July, at 20:00 with Saturday matinees at 15:00

Written in 1897 this is a story of ten recognisable characters from different parts of society all searching for escape and connection through sex.

Director Leila Henriques locates the story with an all Fleur du Cap award-winning cast and creative team; Awethu Hleli, Lyle October, Tamzin Daniels, Nolufefe Ntshuntshe and Carlo Daniels, along with Berenice Barbier and Aidan Scott

In a world obsessed with visibility image and performance, this modern adaptation of La Ronde probes a world where intimacy is currency, sex is a calculated strategy, and everyone is performing for someone La Ronde, French for "the round", refers to a dance performed in circle formation and also means "from

one person to another". It creates the perfect metaphor for Schnitzel’s play, driven by raw physicality, pulsating contemporary music and visceral dance It takes a funny, provocative look at relationships now, delving into the complexities of power, desire and the relentless pursuit of connection. Through the ten characters and ten intimate encounters, it offers a sharp look at who holds power, who is exploited and who is seen.

The play is set in contemporary Cape Town and seen through the eyes of a DJ who finds the perfect track to cover each smooth or clumsy sexual encounter Far more than an erotic carousel, the play exposes the transactional nature of modern relationships, where the lines between agency, desire and self-worth are constantly blurred.

There is an age restriction of 16 years and parental guidance is advised.

j of information you consume You keep hearing people say that they heard a new movie was terrible instead of watching it themselves and offering their own unbiased opinion

Instead of freely being ourselves more people seem to latch onto the narrative of pop culture and join the "cool club" I m guilty of this too and I admit there are gems of handy advice glowing amid the "brain-rot" There's dates, delicious recipes and funny cat videos available with the swipe of a finger, but when do we

stop, reflect and allow some introspection before we fall prey to instant gratification and hits of dopamine?

It often seems more relaxing to enjoy a whole bag of crisps laying inside a warm bed binging Instagram reels or watching the latest series than finishing that new novel or completing our gym goals As a young adult enduring work traffic, deadlines, loneliness and dating disappointments, it s easy to become irritable and cynical and let our egos wreak havoc and become addicted to pleasing ourselves No pun intended there When we consider our dreams we may think have become dusty old toys we left on the shelf, but that's where the personal growth lies

We're quick to forget our progress when scrolling on social media and seeing someone who already has the kind of lifestyle we desire but hardly consider that we're only seeing a mirage someone has carefully curated to reflect their ideal selves to the world

We're obsessed with aesthetics and living life like celebrities and fear being seen as "cringe"

Especially young artists feeling exhausted about the hustle they endure creating their art and feeling upset about the views they receive and the bills that could care less about harmony and cinematography But remember, my friends, today Vincent Van Gogh's artworks are priceless despite his struggle in selling those beautiful paintings So enjoy the present tense and understand your work and legacy will live after you There's a beauty in floating in these chaotic seas of modern life, seeing how technology and social media has connected us to form relationships

Ek verwys na “Pensioner & Property Owner, Northern Suburbs” se brief “Who benefits when property prices explode?” (TygerBurger 11 Junie)

Affordable shops finally closer to home

We arrived from Namibia and settled in Duynefontein, Melkbosstrand in 1986

Prices in Melkbosstrand with the few shops were so expensive But we went to Bothasig to buy all our supplies at Shoprite and Fruit & Veg in Flamingovlei

Then Shoprite in Bothasig closed down and Checkers opened a new business there We could not afford the high prices We changed to Checkers on Eden

Bay - but later with all the changes in the shop, prices became sky high

Shops like OK Foods, Pick n Pay and Woolworths are not for the poor people of Duynefontein or Melkbosstrand Luckily a new shop opened at Bayside Table

Winter worsens road dangers

I recently drove down a road full of potholes and felt compelled to speak out The worsening condition of our local roads, especially during winter, is alarming Potholes have turned simple commutes into dangerous obstacle courses

After the recent rains the damage has only worsened This isn’t just about inconvenience or repair costs; it’s a growing safety risk How many more accidents must occur before road repairs are prioritised?

AURORA DANIELS, Milnerton

Safety is a constitutional right and not a privilege

Despite a rapidly growing population of over 90 000 residents spread across 184 km² and with crime on the rise, the Durbanville Police Station remains significantly under-resourced to ensure effective crime prevention, timely response to reported crimes and visible policing This is due to the ongoing failure of the national government through its centralised control of the police to allocate police capacity where it is needed

According to the Durbanville police, the officer to population ratio in 2023 stood at one police officer for every 858 residents This is significantly higher than the national average of 1:427 and nearly four times that of the United Nations recommended standard of one officer for every 220 people

The limited policing resources and the size of its jurisdiction impacts the Durbanville police's response times to reported crimes and the equitable delivery of policing services to all In 2023 alone, a total of 5 433 criminal cases were reported The residents of Durbanville have repeatedly raised their concerns about the delayed police response times to reported crimes and the insufficient police visibility in the face of growing safety risks

The unequal deployment of resources at Durbanville police raises concerns about its ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate In terms of section 205 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, the objects of the police service are:

.To prevent combat and investigate crime;

. To maintain public order;

. To protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property and;

. To uphold and enforce the law

To address the current shortcomings, the following urgent interventions are proposed to the Minister of Police Mr Senzo Mchunu:

. The deployment of additional police personnel and operational resources to reduce the officer to population ratio;

. The upgrade of the Durbanville Police Station to Brigadier status to reflect its operational demands;

. The devolution of policing powers to capable provincial governments like the Western Cape and certain policing powers to the City of Cape Town Metro Police Service

This call to action is not criticism of the police officers at the Durbanville Police Station who continue to serve the community with dedication and professionalism It is rather a call for the deployment of additional resources to better equip them to enhance police services as envisaged in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and the South African Police Service Act, No 68 of 1995

City gives Sanccob new wings

KAILIN

The City has approved a property transaction that aims to support the long-term sustainability of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) last week

The sanctuary leases the site in Table View from the City and has operated there as a globally-recognised non-profit organisation since 1968 Its mission is to rescue and rehabilitate endangered seabirds, especially the African penguin, through a combination of veterinary care, education and public engagement

“This is a prime example of how City-owned land can be used to drive environmental protection, education and economic opportunity,” said James Vos, Mayco member for Economic Growth, during a visit to the facility

“I’m proud that my team facilitated this transaction to support Sanccob’s important work ”

He highlighted Sanccob as a key environmental partner, contributing to both wildlife protection and Cape Town’s oceans economy Ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde added that the organisation is critical to both the Table View area and far beyond

“Sanccob plays a vital role in Ward 113 and beyond by rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing thousands of seabirds, most notably our beloved African penguins, a species under serious threat

“Its dedicated efforts not only reverse the decline of seabird populations, but also raise crucial environmental awareness within our coastal communities

“The presence of Sanccob in our ward is a point of pride, reminding us daily of the importance of conservation and the powerful difference that committed care and science can make ” . To find out more about Sanccob’s work and how to support them, visit https://sanccob co.za/

CHALLENGE

“Our challenge is that every pedal strike we take is a step in the right direction

“W2W is a three-day stage race, and we have about five months to get into top condition This year, it starts off in Hermanus and ends in Lourensford

“The idea is to have some of the kids from St Joseph's at the finish line

“It will be mentally and physically tiring, but those patients will be our motivation to complete the race," says Carelse

Their target is to raise R25 000

"I think it's a modest target and hopefully the public will get onboard and we surpass that amount by far They, the public, have until the afternoon of 9 November to donate - that's when we will cross the finish line in Lourensford

“All that the public has to do is get onto their website and navigate to the donations It's set up for most countriesthe flag is the indication of which country you are in to facilitate the donations easier," says Carelse

The Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF) is urging residents to open a case at the police station whenever they are a victim of crime, no matter how small the incident may seem "When cases are officially reported, the police can track crime trends and allocate resources where they're needed most If no case is opened, the area may appear crime-free on official records, even if there have been multiple incidents.

"We've heard reports of criminal activity in certain parts of Milnerton, but without formal cases opened, the police have no record and therefore cannot respond strategically

“Help us help you – always open a case It strengthens our CPF efforts and ensures better safety planning for our community," the CPF says.
