ca. But the Mondale High School learner, who travelled to the United States with the backing of a community fundraising effort, has come home with a gold medal from the world’s longest-running spaceengineering competition for schools. Seven high school learners from the Western Cape made history by winning the International Space Settlement Design Competition at the international finals held at Nasa’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was South Africa’s first-ever entry in the competition. After the win Zayaan said she was extremely glad to have represented her country. “I’m extremely glad that I got to represent South Africa and make them proud as a country by coming home with gold,” she said. “And not even just South Africa, the entire African continent, because we were the only African team there. “I’m grateful that I got to share this experience with my teammates and students from around the world.”

Maggie Villett
Stalwart served until her death LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY

LAUREN.OCONNOR-MAY@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA
aggie “Mamma” Villett was at the voter registration in the Mitchells Plain Town Centre on the Saturday before she died. Two days earlier, she had been at the Beaconvale Frail Care Centre doing victim support work. At 79, she never stopped giving her time to others. Villett passed away on Saturday 1 August, after a cold that settled in her lungs. Her daughter, Nicollete Adonis, said her mother had not been seriously ill. “She wasn’t really sick,” said Adonis. “She had a cold and the cold just never cleared up. She just passed on because it affected her lungs.” Adonis said Villett had been less active in the two weeks before her death because of the flu, but had continued her community work right up until then. A LIFE ROOTED IN SERVICE Born on 1 June 1947 in Cape Town, Villett grew up in Athlone, where she completed her schooling. She was the second youngest of four children, two of whom have since passed away. She married Mark Villett, who died about six years ago. Together they had five children, but endured the loss of two of them. She is survived by her three children, Niel, Nicollete and Joseph, her 15 grandchildren and her 11 greatgrandchildren. Villett dedicated her working life to education. In 1998, she opened her own early childhood development centre. She was also a founding member of the Early Childhood Development Forum, a body that represents these centres.
A WIDE REACH IN THE COMMUNITY Villett’s community work spanned decades and touched many areas. She was a founding member of the Mitchells Plain Community Substance Abuse Support Group and was involved in drug rehabilitation and outreach to people living on the streets. She volunteered with the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) in Mitchells Plain and later served on the Nicro management committee. Norman Jantjes, who was the director of Nicro in Eastridge in the early nineties, said he met her there and that she became a trusted volunteer and committee member. “As a committee member she was very active and committed,” he said. “She played a vital role in various community events, especially fundraising events.
A TRIBUTE TO “MAMMA” MAGGIE VILLETT We maintained regular contact as she remained a dedicated community activist.” Jantjes, who is now the chair of the Mitchells Plain United Residents’ Association, said he was saddened by her sudden passing. He expressed his condolences to the family and thanked them for sharing her with the community. Villett also served as a ward committee member — a body that works with the elected councillor to address community needs — belonged to the Local Network of Care, and was involved in the Strandfontein Crime Prevention Victim Support Group and the Eden community structure. THE CAMPSITE YEARS Ricky de Reuck, director of the Cape Flats YMCA, a youth organisation, said Villett and her husband managed the organisation’s campsite in Strandfontein for several years. He said Mr Villett had built the stands by the soccer field at the campsite. “It was fantastic to have Auntie Maggie manage the campsite,” said De Reuck. “Auntie Maggie will always be remembered for community work, but more so for the passion that she had for the campsite and the people on the campsite during covid as well.” De Reuck said Villett moved off the campsite the year after her husband died. REMEMBERED AS MAMMA An obituary written by her son-in-law reads: “To almost everyone who knew her, she was never simply ‘Maggie’ — she was lovingly known as ‘Mamma’.” It goes on to say that she became a mother to many beyond her own family, always willing to help and often giving her very last to someone else. She is described as a God-fearing woman whose life reflected her faith, and “her joyful spirit, warm smile and infectious laughter could light up any room”. “Mamma, you were truly a legend in every aspect of your life. Your love will live on in our hearts forever. Fly high, Mamma. Rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord,” it read. MEMORIAL SERVICE Mitchells Plain Advice Office seniors, where Villett worked for many years, held a memorial service on 5 August at the Town Centre Library.

Driver breaks scholar patrol boom LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY LAUREN.OCONNOR-MAY@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA
L
earners had another narrow escape when a driver swerving through a scholar patrol boom, missed the learners but broke the boom. Two weeks ago an accident at the same spot also narrowly missed learners in the crossing when a car collided with two other vehicles that had stopped for the boom. Richard Small, a Portland Neighbourhood Watch member who assists at the signallised crossing every morning, sent TygerBurger photos of the broken boom and renewed his calls for a speed hump and a more consistent law enforcement presence at the crossing. Small, who is one of several neighbourhood watch members that assist at the crossing every morning, is fearful that authorities will only pay attention to their pleas after a child has been killed there. He has emailed the City and the subcouncil dozens of times over the years and has been repeatedly told that the road is a main arterial and therefore not eligible for a speed hump. SPEED CAMERA The City’s traffic services have, however, said they have started investigations for a speed camera near the site. But this has not satisfied Small who says the three to six
“Six months is too long to sit around a table and discuss this ...” - Richard Small month investigation period is problematic and something that he has been told of before without any visible results. “This is the nitty gritty things that they need to see,” he said, saying that he has emailed the picture of the broken boom, lamenting that he was not quick enough to get a picture of the car’s licence plate as it sped away. “And this three months to six months, after six months then those people are no longer there, they’ve got other positions, and then new people are there and they don’t know about it,” he said, speaking from experience of having to resend the same information to the City countless times over the years. “The previous time, nobody followed up on that. They promised but never delivered. They need to come closer with two to three months. Six months is too long to sit around a table and discuss this.” He is now planning on creating an online petition. CITY’S RESPONSE The morning after the boom was broken, TygerBurger and sent the images of the broken booms to the City and asked if
traffic flow was more important than children’s lives? Traffic services responded by sending vehicles to patrol the site on Friday morning. Small said the traffic officers caught and fined two drivers for trying to bypass the booms that morning. TygerBurger emailed the City again to confirm this but did not receive at response by the time the paper went to print. Earlier, traffic services’
spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said the vehicles could not be committed to the site more permanently. “The City’s Traffic Services receives thousands of complaints monthly about traffic transgressions. Given the size of the metro, the volume of complaints and the many demands on our service, officers are not always able to respond immediately or be static at one specific location. The City’s Traffic Service has taken note of the complaint and will initiate speed enforcement in the area,” he said. The response from Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for
urban mobility, remained the same, albeit worded differently: “There is already an existing signalised intersection with traffic signals. Wespoort Drive is a higher order route that carries a high volume of traffic, meaning, the City cannot install more traffic calming measures along this route. The City considers all requests for traffic calming in terms of its Traffic Calming Policy. Although the policy has a current focus on schools, the policy also considers the classification of the routes in question and generally does not support the introduction of raised calming measures on higher order mobility routes.”

Marathon run to target bullying LAUREN O’CONNOR-MAY

or Kayla Jenecker the number 42 represents pain changed into purpose. Her sister Celita was bullied by 42 people and this left an impact on the family and inspired them to stand up for children that are bullied. Now Kayla is running to 42 schools to raise R100 000 for 42 Unbreakable, an anti-bullying non-profit company. THE STORY BEHIND THE RUN Seeing what her sister endured made Kayla realise that carry the same pain. “I knew we couldn’t change the past, but we could help shape a better future,” she said. She started asking how their story could help someone else. “It’s healing because every life we impact is proof that something good can come from even the most difficult experiences,” she said. Kayla said she believes God does not waste pain. “He can use our greatest struggles to make the greatest
“He can use our greatest struggles to make the greatest difference in the lives of others” - Kayla Jenecker difference in the lives of others.” Her prayer is that every child will know that they are valued, loved, and that no matter what they face, they are unbreakable. FUNDRAISING TARGET The funds raised will help 42 Unbreakable take its programme into more schools. “We want to move beyond simply talking about bullying. We want to equip communities with the tools to prevent it, address it, and create safer environments for children,” said Kayla. The funds will help provide school visits and awareness programmes, workshops and life skills sessions, support and counselling for bullied learners, resources and materials for schools, and community outreach and campaigns. Kayla is asking businesses to partner with the campaign. “When you support 42
Unbreakable, you are not just supporting a campaign. You are investing in the future of our children,” she said. EVERY BIT HELPS She said that while some people may think a small donation does not make a difference, every great movement is built through small acts of kindness. “One brick may seem small, but many bricks can build a home. The same applies to this campaign,” she said. SIGNS TO WATCH FOR Sometimes children do not have the words to express what they are experiencing, so Kayla advised parents to pay attention to changes in behaviour. Signs may include suddenly not wanting to go to school, withdrawing from family or friends, changes in mood, losing confidence, changes in sleeping
or eating patterns, unexplained injuries, or becoming unusually quiet. One of the most important things parents can do is create an environment where their child feels safe to talk. Listen without judgement, take their feelings seriously, and remind them that they are not alone, she said. A MESSAGE TO CHILDREN To children experiencing bullying, Kayla said: “I want you to know that you matter. Your life has value. The things people say about you do not define who you are,” she said. “I know bullying can make you feel alone, but please remember that you are never alone. There are people who care about you, people who want to listen, and people who want to help.” She encourages children to speak up. “Don’t be afraid to speak up. Your voice matters. Your story matters. The difficult season you are facing right now is not the end of your story.” “Always remember: you are FROM PAGE 1 It was the first team in the competition’s history to include representatives from every inhabited continent. Their winning design, called Hermes, was for a spacecraft that could transport 3 000 people across the inner Solar System, the region of space occupied by the planets closest to the sun. KEY ROLES AND A TOP PRIZE Each learner played a different role in the competition. Qayalah served as a presenter, while Benjamin, Joseph and Ethan answered questions from the judges about the team’s design. Joseph also received the Anita Gale Creative Genius Prize, one of only four awarded across the entire competition. “Team ZA worked so cohesively together that we all deserved this award,” he said. “I was just the one who got picked to represent it.” WORDS OF RECOGNITION Acting Provincial Minister for Education Anton Bredell

congratulated the team. “On behalf of the Western Cape Government I congratulate these remarkable young South Africans on their achievement,” he said. “Their success is a powerful reminder that South African learners have the talent, determination and creativity to compete with the very best in the world when they are given the opportunity.” Jagger Cooper-Doubell, chair and executive director of the South Africa Space Design Competition, said the achievement proved that South Africa’s talent could compete with the best in the world. “The talent was never missing in South Africa,” he said. “The opportunity was.” LOOKING AHEAD Following the win, the competition plans to expand nationally. Regional events are scheduled for the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in 2027, with the aim of reaching all nine provinces. Entries for the 2027 South African season open later this year.
Cops arrested for Man’s body found in corruption, kidnapping Two police officers appeared in court after being arrested for corruption, kidnapping and intimidation following an alleged bribery incident. THE INCIDENT According to police spokesperson, Capt FC van Wyk, police searched a house at Du Toitskloof Street, Tafelsig, for drugs and firearms on Wednesday 22 July. Nothing was found but the officers arrested a man at the house. When family members contacted the station about the reason for the arrest, a payment was demanded. The family could not afford the payment but the officers agreed to accepting half. The money was delivered and the man was released. Unbeknownst to the officers the family recorded the conversation. THE INVESTIGATION The matter was reported to the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit and a case was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution, who charged the officers. THE ARREST A 25-year-old constable at Mitchells Plain police station was arrested by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit on Wednesday 5 August. He appeared at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on 6 August. A second officer, who is
currently in Gauteng, has arranged to hand himself over tomorrow (Thursday 13 August) upon his return. RESPONSE Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Sizakhele Dyantyi warned that corruption among the ranks of the Western Cape police will not be tolerated. He said members who find themselves on the wrong side of the law will be prosecuted. The Mitchells Plain Sub-District Community Police Forum said it welcomes the swift arrest of the officers involved. A statement, issued by Sandy Schuter on behalf of the forum, said zero tolerance must be applied to corruption of any sort within law enforcement ranks. The forum said police officers are sworn to protect and serve communities, not to exploit vulnerable families through extortion, kidnapping and intimidation. It said criminal behaviour by those entrusted with upholding the law severely damages community-police relations, and that holding these individuals accountable is a critical step in rebuilding public trust. It commended the AntiCorruption Unit for its decisive action and urged residents to report acts of corruption or abuse of power so that neighbourhoods remain safe and free from criminality at every level.

No congestion charges for now DESIRÉE RORKE The City of Cape Town has dismissed claims that it plans to hit motorists with congestion charges, with Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas saying such measures are off the table until Cape Town’s public transport is up to scratch, and that current national legislation doesn’t even allow for it. This comes after Cape Independence Party (CAPEXIT) last week slammed the City’s proposed Travel Demand Management (TDM) Strategy as an Orwellian dystopia, warning it would punish motorists with higher parking fees, congestion charges and financial penalties simply for driving. In his council speech in the
July sitting, the party’s leader Jack Miller said the City’s strategy would burden motorists with unnecessary costs and restrictions. The strategy, approved by Council last month after a public participation process in October and November 2025, proposes measures to reduce traffic congestion, commuting times and carbon emissions. Miller argued the proposal would restrict the movement of Cape Town drivers rather than address the root causes of traffic. “We are presented with a strategy to control and manage the demand that Capetonians have to travel. “And of course, the answer is various forms of punishment and
more taxation,” he said in his speech. In response, Mayco member for the Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said to TygerBurger: “A congestion charge is not something the City is introducing now, or in the near future. Also, current national legislation does not make provision for such a system. “A congestion charge is mentioned as one of several long-term possibilities that may be considered only after we have achieved our primary goal of providing a reliable, efficient, and city-wide public transport network that serves as a viable alternative to private cars. We are a long way off,” Quintas told TygerBurger.

Man feeds 113 feral cats at UWC
T
he “C” in UWC stands for Cape, but to Patrick Lupuzi it may as well stand for “cat”. Every day Lupuzi, a worker at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), walks across the campus making a distinct clicking sound. Within moments, cats emerge from beneath parked cars and from the shelter of shrubs to greet him. He offers them wet cat food to draw them closer so he can check on them and give them affection. Some are content with gentle grooming, while others eagerly wait for a scratch behind the ears.
A CAMPUS FULL OF CATS About 113 feral cats call UWC home, along with one dog named Meisiehond that wandered onto campus one day and never left. The UWC Feral Cat Project, known as Tufcat, was founded in 1997 by Dr Sharyn Spicer and the late Andre Oppelt to ensure the resident cats are fed daily and receive sterilisation, veterinary care and checkups when needed. During the project’s first cat audit in 1999, there were about 165 cats on
campus. Through its trap-neuter-return programme, the cat population has been stabilised and gradually reduced over the years. The cats also give back to the campus by preventing potential rodent problems.
AN EARLY-MORNING ROUTINE Starting at 06:20, Lupuzi, a Mitchells Plain resident, feeds the cats six days a week when the campus is still quiet. On Sundays, Dr Spicer takes over. The early morning routine encourages the cats to emerge from their hiding places, giving him the chance to monitor their health and well-being. As the cats are occupied eating their wet food, Lupuzi moves from bowl to bowl, wiping each one clean before replenishing the dry food in the selected bowls placed inside the kennels. He also refreshes the water bowls in the 34 kennels scattered across campus. Some of the feeding stations are located as far as Unibell and Hector Pieterson Residence, making them among the furthest points on his daily route.
MITCHELLS PLAIN MAN IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE’S FELINE PROJECT ON CAMPUS
FROM DOG LOVER TO CAT PERSON “I wasn’t actually a cat person at first. I love dogs mostly. But as time went on, I’ve grown to love them,” said Lupuzi. He says looking after the cats is a huge stress reliever and something he enjoys immensely. “The way they look at me and wait for me to feed them, it’s actually quite an experience.” HOW TO SUPPORT TUFCAT Tufcat gets support through donations and the sale of second-hand books. The project is also listed on the Woolworths app, where supporters can select The UWC Feral Cat Project/Tufcat as their “My Cause”. A portion of shoppers’ purchases made using the MyDifference card is donated to the project. For more information on how to support Tufcat, visit www.tufcat.co.za.

T
he Department of Land Reform and Rural Development has agreed to investigate a house in Punt Road linked to drug dealing after a meeting with Strandfontein ward councillor Elton Jansen. The property on a farm neighbouring Strandfontein in Schaapkraal has been described as a den of drug abuse linked to gang activity. A petition calling for the eviction of the occupants and the demolition of the house has gathered more than 1 300 signatures.
WHO ATTENDED THE MEETING The meeting included Kay September, acting director for property management, Nyameko Mgoqi, acting chief director at the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, and Andre Booysen, director for the Cape metro. The department confirmed that the property is owned by the government owns and was supposed to have been empty when the department took ownership. It said that the occupants have tenure rights. It added that the area was a bread basket and part of land reform plans. Police have conducted several raids at the premises, but residents say the building remains occupied. The City has previously dealt with the property through its problem-building process, but no lasting solution has been reached. Officials agreed that a permanent solution was needed. It asked for three weeks to investigate the matter with and scheduled a follow-up meeting for September.

Nagmerrie-ervaring met Women who shape our stories Sassa-aansoek THINKING OUT LOUD
On 9 August 1956, 20 000 women marched through the streets of Pretoria with a simple yet powerful message: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo — you strike a woman, you strike a rock”. This happened long before I was born. I was fortunate enough to be raised by another remarkable woman: my own mother. She taught me resilience, compassion and quiet strength, not through speeches, but through the example she set every single day. Women like her, and the thousands who marched before her, helped shape the world we have the privilege of living in today. I say this without taking anything away from the brave men and fathers who also have a special place in our lives. But Sunday belonged to the women who have carried families, communities, businesses and our country forward, often without fanfare and always with extraordinary courage.
..
THEY HELP ALL OF US NAVIGATE IT WITH WISDOM, EMPATHY AND DETERMINATION
..
To the women of 1956 who marched and refused to be silenced, and to the women of today who continue to embody that same spirit: thank you. You are the rock upon which so much is built, and you continue to shape our world for the better. I see that strength every day. The journalists chasing stories before dawn. The sales teams opening doors and building trusted relationships. The editors shaping narratives with precision and heart. The digital teams growing audiences across the country. So many of them are women, and so much of our success rests on their talent, resilience, leadership and unwavering commitment. As we navigate constant change in our industry and in the world around us, it is often the women in our business who remind me what courage truly looks like. They don’t simply adapt to change; they help all of us navigate it with wisdom, empathy and determination. To every woman in our organisation, our industry and across South Africa: thank you. You are not simply part of the story. You are the story. Stories of hope. Of heart. Of perseverance. Of inspiration. Of purpose. I see those stories in extraordinary women doing seemingly ordinary things every day: showing up, lifting others, solving problems, leading with grace and doing what needs to be done. Today, and every day, I salute you. ESMÉ SMIT, NovaNews * Esmé Smit is General Manager of Novus Media.
LIZELLE STRYDOM, Bellville
Good service above and beyond We are often quick to write letters or post comments when public service falls short, but less inclined to acknowledge those who go the extra mile. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to subcouncil manager 3, Roxanne Moses, for her assistance during the recent upgrade of the Theo Marais Park boundary wall. The project initially caused unnecessary concern and frustration among residents due to shortcomings in public participation and communication. It was at this point that Roxanne's intervention proved invaluable. She took the time to meet with residents, listened to our concerns, and facilitated engagement between the project manager, the ward councillor Anthony Bernadie, and the community. Her calm, professional approach helped restore confidence in the process and ensured that all parties worked together towards a practical and mutually acceptable solution. As a result, the necessary repairs were completed promptly and efficiently, leaving residents satisfied with the outcome. Throughout the process, Roxanne demonstrated professionalism, responsiveness, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving the community. Public servants who quietly make a positive difference seldom receive recognition. It is therefore only fitting that we acknowledge someone whose dedication, empathy, and willingness to engage have had such a meaningful impact. To Roxanne, thank you for reminding us that excellent public service is alive and well. STRETCH AND JYOTHI NAIDOO, Milnerton Ridge
Thank you Sixty60 driver for you kindness during break down I wanted to share a small but meaningful moment that reminded me just how much kindness still exists in our community. Last night I broke down on Jip de Jager near Loevenstein and found myself standing outside my car waiting for friends to come and help. Out of nowhere, a Checkers Sixty60 driver pulled over. He had already finished his shift and was heading home, but when he noticed me, he actually turned
back to come check on me. He asked if I was okay and when I explained that help was on the way, he still offered to stay with me until my friends arrived. I was honestly so touched that someone would take time out of their evening like that – not just to stop, but to genuinely care. I even worried that I might be delaying him, only for him to tell me he was already done for the day. What stayed with me most was what he said: “We
need to help one another.” Simple words, but he had already shown exactly what that means through his actions. It was such a powerful reminder that there are still good people out there — and that people, at their core, are good. I thought this small moment might be worth sharing, as a reminder of the kind of community we can be. LAUREN, E-mail
If you can’t fix it, tax it, is the City’s flawed modus operandi A new plan to fix one of Cape Town’s biggest problems [rail transport] demonstrates CoCT’s failures to plan for, let alone invest in land use, infrastructure and services. As with its property rates, electricity and other tariffs, traffic and parking charges and fines, etc. its only solution is to increase taxation. For years it has ignored or avoided sensible options. Like London, New York, San Francisco, it seeks to force citizens to use inconvenient or unaffordable transport
options. No mention is made of allowing minibus taxis to use MyCiTi bus corridors, encouraging ride sharing through autonomous vehicles using artificial intelligence to understand and optimise road usage patterns, decentralising public services to the communities that they are supposed to serve and promoting distributed commercial and industrial nodes to be closer to residential areas. God help taxpaying residents if bureaucrats manage
to get control of Cape Town’s railways. Addictive taxation highlights is an economic feedback loop in which governments become financially dependent on revenues generated from systemic revenue collected by any and all means. While those commuting between their downtown executive suites and Winelands retreats will not care too much, this is just another nail in the financial coffin of the average Capetonian. Long-acting HIV meds rolled out
N
early nine out of every 10 people getting long-acting Lenacapavir injections choose pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the first time. Between 8 June and 24 July this year healthcare workers administered 2 339 Lenacapavir injections across 22 public health facilities to the communities with the highest HIV burden. Of these, 2 049 (87,6%) were people who were not previously taking oral PrEP. Besides Lenacapavir, a twice a year injection, pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP can also be taken as daily prescription pill which has been available in South Africa since 2016. Provincial MEC of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said early results demonstrate the value of giving people more choice. “One of our greatest opportunities to reduce new HIV infections is to ensure that more people who are at risk choose an effective prevention option. What is particularly encouraging about these early results is that almost 88% of people

USERS SHOW PREFERENCE FOR INJECTABLE receiving Lenacapavir are new to PrEP. This means we are expanding access to HIV prevention and reaching people who may previously have found daily medication difficult or simply were not using PrEP at all.” Lenacapavir is a long-acting medication that helps prevent HIV infection. It is administered as an injection every six months. Lenacapavir is not a vaccine but a prevention medicine. EASIER TO REMEMBER Healthcare workers report that many patients have chosen Lenacapavir because receiving one injection every six months is easier than remembering to take a tablet every day. The programme has also seen clients who previously struggled with daily oral PrEP successfully switch to the long-acting injectable option. The rollout has also shown encouraging uptake among women. During the reporting period, 162 pregnant women initiated Lenacapavir, while a further seven antenatal patients switched from oral PrEP to injectable PrEP. The highest uptake has been recorded at Nolungile Community Day Centre with 192 administrations; Khayelitsha (Site B) Community Health Centre with 186 administrations and Phumlani Clinic with 182 administrations. The first phase of the rollout prioritised adolescent girls and young women, women of reproductive age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as other key population groups at increased risk of HIV acquisition.

Blind date goes off the rails
WGRUV Dance company
Dance company trace the line
I
ndependent dance company WGRUV returns to Cape Town's District Six Homecoming Centre from 27 to 29 August with a new programme, Highlights: Tracing the Line, following the successful run of its 2026 season opener Juxtapose in Johannesburg and Gqeberha. The programme brings works by internationally acclaimed choreographer Jessica Lang, Jesse Obremski, Michael Trusnovec and WGRUV's own Holly and Lex Gruver together. Lang's neo-classical craftsmanship has defined a generation of ballet, while Obremski's movement language explores human connection, and Trusnovec is known for sculptural clarity and quiet power. The Gruvers' collaborative choreographic voice continues to develop its own distinct character. Highlights combines audience favourites with new discoveries, brought to life by WGRUV's artists with the precision and passion the company is known for. The works explore the fundamental language of the body, line, colour, weight and meaning in a programme designed to be felt as much as watched.
“We wanted to offer our audiences an experience at the theatre that fills them,” WGRUV Artistic Director Holly Gruver said. “Each work traces something, a gesture, a story, an emotion, which together form a line from the stage to the heart. This is dance with a purpose. Dance that leaves you more alive than when you arrived.” The WGRUV Dance Company, a non-profit founded by Holly Gruver, is a contemporary ballet company based in Bryanston, Johannesburg which works with South African and international choreographers to produce work of depth, beauty and cultural significance. A dress rehearsal and Q&A session with dancers takes place on Thursday 27 August at 16:00 for students and school groups, with tickets at R99 per student. Email tanya@wgruvdance.com to book. Performance times are Friday 28 August at 19:00 and Saturday the 29th at 15:00. Tickets range from R220 to R300. Book at Webtickets.co.za or visit wgruvdance. com for more information.
Delton Productions Company has announced open auditions in Cape Town for a new Beatles tribute show, set to open at a city theatre in September. Male singers and musicians aged 18 to 80 are invited to audition at The Waterfront Theatre School, on the corner of Port Road and Alfred Street in the V&A Waterfront, on Sunday 16 August between 10:00 and 13:00. The company is casting performers of any race, with a preference for those who can both sing and play an instrument.
experienced and first-time performers are welcome. Auditionees should prepare two Beatles songs and be ready to perform a third Beatles song with a backing track, which will be provided on the day. Those using their own backing tracks should bring them on a USB drive or via Bluetooth.
Audiences are in for the musical treat of the year when the hit Broadway comedy First Date: The Musical has its South African premiere in October, at the Avalon Theatre, District Six Homecoming Centre in the heart of the Cape Town Central Business District. The show is a delightful romantic comedy about a blind date that goes wonderfully, awkwardly and hilariously off the rails from Wednesday 21 October until Sunday 1 November. Set in a bustling New York City restaurant, First Date: The Musical transforms a simple dinner for Aaron and Casey into a whirlwind of comedy, romance and heart as friends, family, exes and inner critics burst into song and dance, offering their often-unhelpful opinions on every moment of the date. “Let’s face it, we’ve all had, or know someone who has had, an interesting dating experience,” says producer Harley Ferguson. “We are proud present the local premiere of this wonderful, fast-paced musical comedy that turns the highs, lows and hilarious awkwardness of a first date into an unforgettable night at the theatre.
First Date: The musical will be presented at the Avalon Theatre.

CELEBRATE WOMEN, FITNESS AND COMMUNITY
Victory for Kenya’s Jerono K
enya's Daisilah Jerono celebrated her South African racing debut in style, claiming gold at the Totalsports Women's Race Cape Town in 31:29, as she joined thousands of women in celebrating National Women's Day on Sunday, 9 August. Currently ranked No 7 in the world for the half marathon in 2026, following her impressive 1:05:21 performance in Berlin, Jerono is also the second-fastest Kenyan over the distance this year. With the goal of bettering her personal best, Jerono achieved just that while claiming the top spot on the podium. "The race was tough. It was windy, with a few ups and downs, but I am happy to have run today," says Jerono. "This is my first time in South Africa. I didn't come with the idea of winning; I came to see where I am in my training. The runners were so cheerful, and I really liked how they cheered for us. I am so happy to win today. I was not expecting it; it's by God's grace. God willing, maybe I'll come back next year." Fellow campatriot Faith Cherono came in second, while Neheng Khatala of Lesotho finished third. The 2026 Totalsports Women's Race Cape Town attracted 10

Reflecting on a memorable day of racing, Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, praised both the elite performances and the incredible spirit shown by thousands of participants. "Congratulations to Daisilah Jerono on a truly outstanding performance. The standard of elite racing at this year's
Totalsports Women's Race Cape Town was exceptional, with an exciting display of talent and determination from start to finish," says Meyer. "It was equally inspiring to see thousands of women take to the streets to celebrate Women's Month, support PinkDrive and embrace the spirit of this iconic event. We look forward to taking the celebration to Joburg on 16 August, where we'll bring another chapter to what has already been an incredible Women's Month."
