Young people arehelping researchers rethink how violence and safety are understood —and what should be done about it.
The youth,from Mitchells Plain, havejoined an international research project that places them at thecentre of finding solutions to urban violence. The project, ledbythe London School of Economics andPolitical Science (LSE) and funded by the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD), is running in two cities simultaneously: Cape Town and Medellín,Colombia’s second-largest city.
Both cities have long histories of violence and insecurity, but alsoofcommunities thathave pushed back, survived, and searched for away forward.

For the young people involved, safety means far more than not being robbed or shot.Speaking duringalive podcast on Saturday 6June,for YouthMonth and Child Protection Week, the participants shared what security means to them.
Nazreen Ryklief, apsychology student who moved to Mitchells Plainduring her second year at university, said the shift from thenorthern suburbs changed everything.
“I feel unsafe even just driving
up to university,”she said. “I still remember talks in the evenings with my grandmother and my family members around being careful when leaving at a certain time, making sure your doors are locked at night.” She added that security, to her, is not just about the neighbourhood.
“Security means being able to see whether Idohave afuture, where Isee myself five years from now, and being able to afford or be granted certain opportunities outside of my community.”

Zayaan Petersen echoed the point, saying safety also means being comfortable enough to walk to the tuck shop or the bus stop alone.

AGrade 11 learner from Mondale High School in Portland is among eight South Africanlearners chosen to visit NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in July.
Zayaan Abdurahman earned her place through theSouth African Space Design Competition,whichchallenges high school teams to designfuturistic space settlements. The competition is part of a global programme that runs across six continents.

“As achild, Ioften went camping with my family. My grandmother and Iwould sit outside at nightwatching the stars. Ialways found it surreal that thereare millions of burning balls of gas floating in theuniverse.Iguess Ihave to thank her for my interest in all things space related,” shesaid.

“Competinginthe South African SpaceDesign Competition was stressful, especially since we only had 18 hours to completeour project. Iworked overnight with my teamtofinish our design, and
I’m proud of what we achieved. This experience taught me that great effort leads to great outcomes,” Zayaan said. She also shared her excitement about meeting other young people from around the world. “I’mlooking forward to competing and meeting studentsfromall around the world. It really shows unity when learners from different places and backgrounds come together to workasa team.”

Tributes and condolences have poured in for Jason Bailey, the car guard who died in hospitalonSaturday 6 June.
Bailey was shot in theback by unknown gunmen on Wednesday 3June. An off-duty fireman and nurse assisted Bailey at the scene with community members, until an ambulance arrived but Bailey succumbed to hisinjuries on Saturday morning.
Strandfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) chair, Sandy Schuter, was at the scene when Bailey was shot and posted about the incident on theCPF’s WhatsApp channel. She hassince been floodedwithrequests for information about his condition.
On Saturday,Schuter posted saying thatshe had been in contact with Bailey’s father and he had died.

“Everybody experiences insecurity security differently, depending on thei age, depending on their gender, depend on where they live,” she said. “Norma when we hear politicians or even exp in security talking about security,they speak about security as if we are all same situation.”
She said the research had shown that improving security requires more tha policing

Soul singer Fagrie Isaacs is set to headline Here and Now —ALuther Vandross TributeShow at the Artscape Theatre on Friday 26 June and Saturday 27 June.
The production, which has previously sold out in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, is musically directed by award-winning maestro Charlton Daniels.

Isaacs’s love of music began long before the spotlight found him. He started singing in his school choir in 1987, at just six years old, and says music has been the defining thread of his life ever since.
“I’ve alwayswanted to be a performer. I’vealways wanted to make music,” he says. “Music saved me.”
Born and raised in Strandfontein, Isaacs said he grew up immersed in Cape Malay culture, of which is deeply proud. He has taken part in the Malay Choir competition since childhood and has competedasa solo artist in the Kaapse Klopse

Isaacs made his solo debut at theJoseph Stone in Cape Town in 1993 andhas since performed on stages across the world.
He joined TheBoyz —which he described as SouthAfrica’s biggest boy band —atthe start of 1999. “I spent 20 yearsofmylife with theBoyz,” he said and described
their first hit Stay the Night as the “unofficial anthem of Cape Town.”
He went on to front Unity, an Islamic gospel group, touring the United Kingdom in 2015 and performing at five consecutive headline shows at Durban’s Al Ansaar Souk In 2014, he performed at Carnegie Hall in NewYork as part of the SouthAfrican Ubuntu Festival.
He is also the lead male vocalist on the celebrated Cape Carnival album and has shared the stage with international acts Peaches and Herb and Atlantic Starr, at Cape Town’sGrandWest Arena.
His 2025 single, “The Cape Town Song”, was endorsed by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and thisyear he released anew single, “Come Back Home Soon”.
