COULD THIS BE A TURNING POINT FOR MILNERTON LAGOON? The first beach wells are being drilled at Milnerton Beach as the City of Cape Town moves ahead with a pilot project aimed at improving conditions in Milnerton Lagoon. Water is expected to be introduced into the lagoon in October, followed by six months of monitoring to assess the impact on water quality and the ecosystem. Read more on page 3. he thousands of sardines that washed up along parts of South Africa’s coastline appear to have stopped dying, with authorities reporting no further widespread mortalities since September. While the development offers some relief, scientists are still working to unravel

what caused the 2026 mortality event, with pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) remaining the leading biological factor under investigation. The latest isolated fresh wash-up was recorded near Mbotyi on 10 September, with DFFE saying no further reports have been received since then. While the absence of new reports is considered a positive development,

authorities have stressed that further occurrences cannot yet be ruled out. Monitoring and reporting arrangements therefore remain in place, with coastal authorities, fishers and members of the public urged to report any new sightings as soon as possible.

ith the summer season and associated fire season properly upon us, the City of Cape Town said that its highly trained Fire and Rescue Service are geared up to fight any fire reported during this period. On Wednesday last week at the Goodwood Fire Station the service displayed some of its specialised equipment that it will be using to fight fires during summer. In a statement the City said its existing fleet comprises various specialised vehicles and equipment, including a flatbed heavy-duty cargo vehicle with a 32-ton crane capacity, two 4x4 water tankers with a 5 000l capacity, three 6x6 tankers with a 10 500l capacity, four 4x4 heavy-duty pumper firefighting vehicles, four 4x4 wildland firefighting vehicles and three off-road vehicles to support Incident Management Teams, among others. NEW FLEET Some of the newly acquired vehicles added to the fleet are 11 medium wildland firefighting 4x4 vehicles with 1 500l capacity. These vehicles can respond swiftly and search difficult sandy and mountainous terrain to fight fires, the City said. In addition to this, the City has also procured two 4x4 medium wildland firefighting vehicles as well as a heavyduty 44m hydraulic platform for delivery in December this year. The City said all the vehicles are wellmaintained, serviced and tested ensuring operational readiness at any given time. According to the City, a total of 35 new junior firefighters joined its ranks in July this year after successfully completing the Fire Cadet training programme. It also pointed out that each year, their services employ a group of Wildland Firefighters on a contract basis to bolster resources over the warmer months, when there is a higher risk of veldfires. SUPPORT Wednesday's event in Goodwood was attended by JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security. "Our firemen and women are highly

Dead sardines line the shore at Lagoon Beach following the latest mass fish mortality event.

FIRE STATION DISPLAYS SPECIALISED EQUIPMENT trained and have built on the reputation of being well prepared with a rapid response time in difficult situations. They have proven to be the best in South Africa, and we are extremely proud to be able to support them with high-end technology and equipment. As we head towards what will be a long summer with high winds and temperatures, let us support our fire and rescue service when they get called out to fight a fire," said Smith. In the most recent financial year, the fire and rescue service attended to 30 512 incidents, while in this financial year, the service will spend more than R25 million on resource investments, the City said. The investments include: R12 million in building improvement to Brooklyn and Contantia fire stations; R5,75 million on additional specialised services; R5 million on minor building and fencing upgrades; R3 million on the initial works at the new Langa Fire Station; R1,6 million on replacing firefighting equipment. factor associated with the mortality event, although scientists are still investigating its prevalence, timing and possible origin. Laboratory and epidemiological investigations are continuing to establish how the virus may have contributed to the deaths and whether oceanographic or other environmental conditions played a role. The DFFE previously established an urgent task team involving the department, the fishing industry and other stakeholders to coordinate the response and investigate the possible causes of the mass mortalities. The department also indicated that disease surveillance would be expanded along the West, South and East coasts while disease, pathology and environmental investigations continued. SURVEY TO ASSESS SARDINE STOCKS Preparations are continuing for the planned end-of-year hydroacoustic survey, which will provide the first fisheriesindependent estimate of sardine biomass and distribution following the mortality event. The results will help scientists determine the extent of any impact on the sardine population and inform future fisheries management decisions. Authorities are also monitoring possible effects on sardine-dependent predators and other parts of the marine ecosystem as part of the coordinated response plan. A temporary precautionary restriction on the sardine fishery was also put in place following the mortalities. The public was advised not to collect or eat dead or dying sardines.

Could beach wells turn the tide for Milnerton Lagoon? KAILIN DANIELS

“C

KAILIN.DANIELS@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

ould this be a turning point for the Milnerton Lagoon?” That was the question posed in a recent RethinkTheStink post, highlighting the City of Cape Town’s latest efforts to improve the troubled waterway. IMPORTANT INTERVENTION The post pointed to the start of drilling for beach wells at Milnerton Beach, describing the project as an important intervention after years of pollution pressure and calling for hope that it could

be another step towards a healthier, living Milnerton Lagoon. The City has begun drilling the first beach wells as part of a pilot project that will test whether saline groundwater from beneath the beach can be pumped into the upper lagoon to improve its environmental condition. The RethinkTheStink campaign has continued to highlight concerns around Milnerton Lagoon, where pollution, poor water quality and unpleasant odours have long been a concern for surrounding communities. But the campaign's message is about more than simply tackling the smell. It calls attention to the need for solutions that address the underlying environmental problems affecting the lagoon and its ecosystem. The new beach-well project is now being closely watched as the City tests whether changing the lagoon's water conditions can help improve its health. CITY STARTS DRILLING Drilling began on 16 September and is expected to continue for about two weeks. Water from beneath the beach is expected to start being introduced into the upper lagoon in October. The City says the pilot will test whether saline groundwater can be abstracted from beneath Milnerton Beach and pumped into the lagoon to improve flushing, dilute pollutant concentrations and increase dissolved oxygen and salinity.

RETHINKTHESTINK POSES QUESTIONS ON CITY’S NEWEST WATERWAY PROJECT SIX-MONTH TRIAL Once the water starts being introduced, the project will enter a six-month monitoring and evaluation period. During the trial, the City will closely monitor water quality, environmental conditions and the technical performance of the system. Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment Eddie Andrews said the start of drilling marked an important milestone in efforts to find practical and evidence-based solutions for the lagoon. “This is a pilot project and its purpose is to test the intervention under real conditions while carefully monitoring its environmental performance,” Andrews said. He said the information collected during the trial would determine what happens next.“The information gathered will provide the City with evidence to determine whether the project should continue, be modified or be discontinued,” he said. MORE THAN JUST THE SMELL For the RethinkTheStink campaign and those concerned about the lagoon, the issue goes beyond its unpleasant odour. The long-term goal is a healthier waterway.

Creatives can apply for City funding The City of Cape Town is calling for applications for arts, culture and heritage grants, with funding available for organisations running projects across the metro. Applications for the City’s Grants-in-Aid programme are open until 30 October. The programme supports organisations implementing arts, culture and heritage projects and programmes in the city. In 2025-’26 the City allocated R3,81 million through the programme to 14 organisations supporting arts, culture, heritage and community development initiatives across the metro. Mayco member for Community Services and Health Francine Higham said arts and culture could open doors for people, nurture talent and create opportunities for communities to come together. She had visited some of the organisations supported through last year’s programme, including Masi Violin Outreach and Sbondaba Dance. “These are exactly the kinds of programmes that can help young people discover and develop their talents, build confidence and find pathways into the creative economy. I encourage eligible organisations with strong, sustainable projects that can make a meaningful difference in our communities to apply.” WHO CAN APPLY Funding is available for the 2027-’28 and 2028’29 financial years, and organisations may apply for both years by submitting a separate application for each. Proposals should focus on sustainable cultural and creative projects aimed at young people aged seven to 35, or vulnerable groups, including women, children, seniors and persons with disabilities. Projects may include programmes, productions, performances, public activations, arts and culture-related training programmes and exhibitions. Proposed projects should promote inclusivity and accessibility and, where possible, ensure participation is free or offered at a minimal cost to the public. Applicants must meet several requirements and submit supporting documentation.

Queen of Hearts laces up for Mrs SA DESIRÉE RORKE

S

DESIREE.RORKE@TYGERBURGER.CO.ZA

he has survived a coma, a brain tumour and a cardiac arrest and now she is strutting towards the Mrs South Africa stage with a pacemaker in her chest and fire in her heart. Chanelle Badenhorst (37), a wife, mother of two and Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa Champion from Bloubergstrand, is among the top 30 finalists in this year’s Mrs South Africa competition. But hers is no ordinary pageant journey. “After everything I’ve faced in my life, entering Mrs South Africa feels like a calling, a step into purpose, not perfection,” she says. “I didn’t come here polished or pretending. I came as I am, real, learning and growing.”

Chanelle Badenhors from Bloubergstrand, is among the top 30 finalists in this year’s Mrs South Africa competition.

“Entering Mrs South Africa feels like a calling ...” - Chanelle Badenhorst Chanelle’s medical odyssey began in 2008 when, as a 19-year-old student at the North-West University, she contracted viral meningitis and was in a coma for about a week. “Just six weeks after I came out of the coma, a tumour on the pituitary gland of the brain was diagnosed,” she says. “I was a student at the time and had to interrupt my studies.” The tumour caused blindness and required stringent treatment. Had she not recovered, surgery to remove it would have carried the risk of losing her senses. “It was a journey of faith, and a miracle when the treatment supposed to shrink the tumour took the tumour away. Life was back to normal and I could return to university to complete my studies.” And complete them she did, with distinction. She went on to complete her BA in communication and media studies, then her honours degree in psychology, and then her master’s degree in applied positive psychology, all cum laude. “I was the youngest person and first woman in South Africa to complete the master’s degree.” For a while, life was good. She got married and were blessed with two daughters. A HEART THAT STOPPED In her early thirties, heart health became a major part of her life. “After Covid I developed myocarditis and pericarditis causing a sudden cardiac arrest at work and was later diagnosed with, among other things, sick sinus syndrome.”

At just 33, she received a pacemaker. “My life changed instantly, and what was normal was not normal anymore,” she says. “I became dependent on the pacemaker and was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome. In other words, my heart was lazy.” She had to start running to strengthen her heart. What started as 30-minute cardio workouts turned into longer runs as she joined a running club. It was a big mindshift, but nine months later she did her first half marathon, and a year later, the Cape Town marathon. “I run to keep my heart as strong and fit as possible. I have completed more than one Cape Town marathon, but the Two Oceans half marathon is very special to me. I have completed it several times and have also run as a Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa Champion.” Chanelle was chosen as a semi-finalist in January and made the top 30 in July. She calls her platform Queen of Hearts, and it is not about a tiara. “When I speak about a crown, I don’t mean something worn on my head,” she says. “My crown is my heart. That’s the space I lead from. That’s the brand I’m building.” The platform brings her heart story, her faith, her love for people and her passion for women supporting other women all together. “I’m discovering that this journey is built on sisterhood, on relationships that form when women choose to rely on one another.” She says the Mrs South Africa competition is a platform that empowers women. “It is actually often referred to as the ‘MBA of Life’ The glamour is only a small part of it. Plans afoot for city’s ‘eyesores’

T

he City of Cape Town has unveiled its vision to transform the Foreshore’s unfinished highways into a new link bridge, promenade and neighbourhood, a project that could relieve central business district (CBD) congestion for decades and unlock development on 15 ha of vacant land. The Foreshore Precinct Project will see the city’s unfinished bridges completed and an entirely new neighbourhood developed on land that has remained undeveloped for more than 50 years, among the last vacant CBD land available. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced the project at the unfinished highways on Friday 2 October. “Every one of us who has grown up here has looked up at these big unfinished bridges time and time again and wondered what happened, why they were never finished, and when they ever would be.” NEW BRIDGE AND TUNNEL A new bridge will link the inbound freeway directly to Helen Suzman Boulevard, bypassing Buitengracht and allowing traffic heading from the Foreshore towards Green Point, Sea Point and beyond to avoid the CBD altogether. The outbound freeway will be replaced by a tunnel running underground next to Duncan Road, connecting to the N1 and N2 freeways. The City proposes building the project in two phases, with the existing freeways continuing to operate to avoid severe traffic congestion. PHASE ONE: LINK BRIDGE AND NEW PARK Phase 1, set to commence during the next term of council, includes widening the inbound freeway with two additional lanes, constructing the link bridge to Helen Suzman Boulevard, and a new elevated outbound ramp connecting Buitengracht over Dock Road to the existing outbound freeway. Other Phase 1 elements include making FW de Klerk Boulevard a pedestrian-

CITY’S UNFINISHED BRIDGES SET TO BE COMPLETED, TO GIVE DIRECT ACCESS TO GREEN AND SEA POINT, BYPASSING CBD oriented street, a new canal linking Buitengracht Park to the Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Canal, a new park under the Buitengracht link bridge, bus lanes across Buitengracht, and three land parcels becoming available for a new residential area. PHASE 2: TUNNEL AND PROMENADE Phase 2 involves constructing a new outbound bridge linking Helen Suzman Boulevard with the outbound tunnel, demolishing the existing outbound elevated freeway viaduct and creating a promenade, parks and public spaces along the harbour edge. All remaining land parcels would become available for development, with construction of this phase expected to run until 2040. Hill-Lewis said the project would transform the unfinished highways into a link bridge and tunnel to relieve inner-city congestion and improve the connection between the Foreshore and the Atlantic Seaboard. A brand new Foreshore neighbourhood would be unlocked, including affordable housing, walkable streets and a tree-lined promenade along the harbour’s edge all the way to Sea Point. He said no major public road and transport upgrades had taken place in Cape Town since before the 2010 World Cup, and the Foreshore project, together with the MyCiTi bus network expansion to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain along all 42km of that route, would change that. PUBLIC CONSULTATION BEGINS Hill-Lewis said the City was releasing

drawings to begin public consultation, after which final designs would be turned into detailed engineering designs before procurement and construction could begin. “Today is the beginning of the public facing phase,” he said. “Since the public will soon be consulted on these plans for the first time, now is the right time to make public what we’ve been working on behind the scenes.” To build the tunnel south of Duncan Road, the City was engaging Transnet on land owned by the Port Authority. City Manager Lungelo Mbandazayo said the project was an opportunity to transform and future-proof the CBD. “Every generation has the responsibility to plan ahead for what is needed in decades to come, and this is our turn.” He said the City had engaged stakeholders across the three spheres of government and state-owned entities, and public participation was now the most

Get ready to Poll dance

MUSICAL BASED ON FILM ON STAGE AT ARTSCAPE NEXT YEAR The Bodyguard, the stage musical based on the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, will have its South African premiere at Artscape in Cape Town in March 2027.

Elections are around the corner, the cost of living is up, and political parties are gearing up for another round of promises, posters and unsolicited WhatsApps. The international news gets stranger by the day. Somewhere between the chaos, the campaign trails and the endless political hot takes, there is a small but important question: can we please laugh at this? Politically Aweh brings their political satire show Poll Dancing to the Homecoming Centre on Wednesday 21 October at 19:00. It promises big laughs and the kind of information you actually want before heading to the polls. Hosts KG Mokgadi and Zoë Human bring together Dillan Oliphant, Dan Corder, Lindy Johnson, Naledi Mashishi and more for a fast-paced live show packed with stand-up, sketches, interviews, reporting and plenty of political mischief. But the show is not only about the jokes. Journalists and research partners help unpack what is happening on the ground, giving audiences the context behind the headlines, campaign promises and political noise. The facts are checked, the politicians are fair game, and nobody gets off lightly. So bring your friends, your political opinions and the person who insists they do not follow politics but somehow has a 17-minute voice note about it. Come for the laughs, and leave a little more informed. Get informed, get involved and get to the polls. Tickets cost R250 and are available at Quicket.

Kaartjies kos R250. THINKING OUT LOUD

The year taught me life can change in an instant If there is one thing this year has taught me, it’s things can change in an instant. One moment you’re at the beginning of a new year, filled with hopes, dreams and plans for what lies ahead, and the next, you’re seven months into the year wondering where the time went and how you ended up exactly where you are. Life has a strange way of reminding us that, despite how carefully we plan, very little is actually within our control. At the beginning of the year, many of us probably had a picture in our minds of what this year would look like. Perhaps it included financial stability, travel, personal growth or simply becoming a better version of ourselves. We make plans because plans give us something to look forward to. They make the future feel predictable. But life does not always follow the script. Sometimes, an opportunity comes along that changes everything. Sometimes, a door closes when we were convinced it would remain open. And sometimes, circumstances change so quickly that we barely have time to process what has happened. That unpredictability can be frightening. There are moments when you can feel as though you are falling behind because your life does not look the way

.. NOT EVERY

UNEXPECTED CHANGE IS A SETBACK

..

you imagined it would by this point. We compare our reality with the plans we made at the beginning of the year and wonder what went wrong. But perhaps nothing went wrong. Perhaps life simply changed direction. I have come to realise that not every unexpected change is a setback. Some changes force us to grow in ways we would never have chosen for ourselves. They introduce us to people we would never have met; push us towards opportunities we never considered and teach us lessons we may not have learned if everything had gone according to plan. That does not mean we have to pretend that change is always easy. It isn’t. There are changes that hurt. There are disappointments that take time to accept. There are moments when all you can do is acknowledge that something did not work out the way you hoped it would. And that is okay. Perhaps the lesson is not to stop making plans, but to hold them a little more loosely. To dream but leave room for life to surprise us. To work towards our goals while understanding that the road to getting there may look completely different from what we imagined. Seven months can feel like a lifetime when you look back at everything that has happened. Yet there are still months ahead. And if this year has taught me anything, it is that life can change in an instant. So instead of worrying too much about whether everything is going according to plan, perhaps we should learn to appreciate where we are, trust God through the uncertainty and remain open to what comes next. Because sometimes, the life we end up living is far different from the one we planned. And sometimes, that is where the real story begins. - KAYLYNNE BANTOM

BRIEWE/LETTERS

Time for City to declare itself I read the letter of Ben Groenewald in the TygerBurger of 30 September 2026 with great joy in realising that some-one else was also concerned about the lack of progress with desalination in order to provide long term water security for Cape Town and the Western Cape. During and just after the last severe drought and D-Day predictions, the powers that be had many plans to ensure water security including desalination and we were all satisfied that our leaders would do what they promised. Unfortunately, it seems as if the good years that followed made them complacent and nothing has happened to lighten the blow of a next dry period which by all accounts, we are once again facing this

summer. They remained silent on how the plans they put forward were progressing. It is truly shocking to hear that all that has happened in the intervening years is that a place for a desalination plant has been identified. It clearly seems not to have been a priority any more but was once again typical political promises which went nowhere. It is time for the City and Provincial leadership to come out and say openly to the people of Cape Town and the Western Cape what their intentions are in this regard and to provide time lines so that we can hold them accountable. They are wanting our votes come November so it is time to be really honest and open if they want our support. WANTING ANSWERS, Cape Town resident

Wanneer word mens nou ’n Kapenaar? Ek is al 12 jaar in die Kaap - in Durbanville, of "die noordelik voorstede", soos almal sê. Ek verruil dit vir niks en pas goed in. My vraag is - is ek nog ’n "inkommer"? Indien wel, hoe lank moet ek hier wees voordat ek myself as Kapenaar mag beskou? Ek waardeer my nuwe tuiste baie.

JOHANN, Sonstraalhoogte

The mysterious disappearance of the shopping trolley Where exactly do all the missing shopping trolleys go? Every supermarket car park seems to have at least one abandoned trolley sitting somewhere. Some are left next to parking bays, others on pavements, and occasionally you will spot one several streets away from the shop. I recently saw a trolley standing at the entrance to a residential complex in Durbanville. It looked as though it had decided to start a new life. Perhaps there is a secret trolley society somewhere. Maybe, after a long day of carrying groceries, they gather at night and discuss their adventures. “I spent the afternoon in aisle seven,” one might say. “I was pushed all the way to the car wash,” another could reply. Jokes aside, abandoned trolleys can be a nuisance. They can block pavements, damage vehicles and create hazards. I know that supermarkets employ staff to collect them, but perhaps shoppers should also take some responsibility. Take the extra few minutes to return it to the designated area. We all complain when our neighbourhoods look untidy, but keeping them clean does not only depend on municipal workers or businesses. It starts with small choices made by residents every day. Next time you finish your shopping, return the trolley. E-MAIL, Durbanville

Thank you for fixing our roads

Safety first at school

I would like to take a moment to say thank you to the City of Cape Town for the road repairs and resurfacing work that has recently taken place in parts of Table View. As residents, we are often quick to complain when something is wrong, and understandably so. Potholes, uneven surfaces and deteriorating roads can make daily driving frustrating and, in some cases, dangerous. That is why I believe it is equally important to acknowledge when something is being done to address these problems. The difference on some of the roads is already noticeable. A smoother road might seem like a small thing, but for the thousands of residents who use these streets every day, it makes a considerable difference. For motorists, it means fewer potholes to dodge and less wear and tear on vehicles. For cyclists and pedestrians, properly maintained roads and surfaces also contribute to a safer environment.

Every morning, parents gather outside schools with one common hope: that their children will arrive safely. Unfortunately, some motorists seem to forget this. I have watched cars speeding through school zones, drivers overtaking vehicles that are waiting for children and motorists becoming impatient because a parent is taking a few extra seconds to let a child out of a car. We all have somewhere to be. But getting to work two minutes earlier is not more important than a child’s safety. School areas are busy places. Children are unpredictable. They run, they drop things, they cross roads and sometimes they simply don’t see an approaching vehicle. That is precisely why motorists need to slow down. Put the phone away. Pay attention. Follow the speed limit. Be patient when traffic is congested. Remember that the child crossing the road could be your own. E-MAIL, Plattekloof

I understand that the City has a huge area to maintain and that road repairs cannot happen everywhere at once. There will always be another road somewhere waiting for attention. However, seeing crews actually working in our neighbourhood gives residents some reassurance that our concerns are being heard. I would also like to thank the workers who are out there doing the physical work. Road construction is not an easy job, particularly when crews have to work alongside busy traffic. Hopefully, the repairs will last and similar attention will eventually reach some of the other roads in need of maintenance. We often hear the phrase “community spirit”, but maintaining the infrastructure that communities rely on is an important part of building a better neighbourhood. So, from at least one Table View resident: thank you. - GAVIN PETERSEN, Table View

2027 Absa Cape Epic route revealed T

he 2027 Absa Cape Epic will draw a new line across the Western Cape, with more than 700km of racing, iconic climbs, world-class trails and three host regions combining to create a route that signals not only the next chapter of the race, but the beginning of a new era for the Untamed African Mountain Bike Race. Unveiled at the 2027 Route Launch Gala Dinner at the Southern Sun Cape Sun in Cape Town, the route will take riders from Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West to the valleys of Ceres, through the mountains of Tulbagh and into the legendary trails of Wellington, where one final finish line awaits after eight days of racing. Along the way, riders will tackle the highest point ever reached in the history of the Absa Cape Epic on Waboomsberg, experience some of South Africa's most celebrated trail networks and face the iconic Cliffhanger on the Queen Stage. Built around the theme One Line That Changes Everything, the 2027 route reflects the reality of the Absa Cape Epic: every rider arrives with a different story, but all are transformed by the line they choose to cross. The route opens with a 27km Prologue at Lourensford Wine Estate before moving into two demanding stages around Ceres, including the race's longest

day and a historic ascent of Waboomsberg. Riders will then transition to a new race village at Saronsberg in Tulbagh, where spectacular mountain scenery, hidden valleys and technical singletrack will continue to shape the race narrative. The final chapter unfolds in Wellington, home to the Queen Stage and the legendary Cliffhanger, before a Grand Finale delivers riders to the finish line at Imbuko Wines. FROM CERES TO WELLINGTON From the purpose-built trail networks of Eselfontein to the hidden valleys of the Witzenberg, the expansive roads of the Swartland and the iconic trails of Wellington, the 2027 route combines some of the finest riding in South Africa with the landscapes and experiences that have come to define the Absa Cape Epic. It is a route designed to challenge the world's best professional riders while delivering an unforgettable journey for amateurs chasing their own Epic dream. Shannon Valstar, Race Director for the Absa Cape Epic, said the 2027 route represents far more than the next edition of the race. “2027 marks the beginning of an

exciting new chapter for the Absa Cape Epic. With Absa renewing its commitment to the race, we have an incredible opportunity to build on everything that has made this event iconic while shaping what comes next. This route reflects that ambition. It honours the heritage of the race, but it also signals a new era of growth, innovation and impact.” She said the theme captured what makes the race special. “The theme of One Line That Changes Everything captures exactly what makes the Absa Cape Epic so special. It only takes one decision to enter, one start line to cross and one finish line to completely change how you see yourself and what you believe is possible.” For Valstar, returning to Ceres carries particular significance. “On a personal level, Ceres holds a special place in my journey. The first race village I ever worked in was Ceres during my very first year on the event as part of the media and live broadcast crew.“ Returning there as part of the 2027 route feels incredibly full circle and is a reminder of how many life-changing stories are created through this race, not only for riders, but for everyone fortunate enough to be involved in it.” BUILT ON PARTNERSHIPS Hendrico Burger, Route Director for the Absa Cape Epic, paid tribute to the landowners,

trail builders and communities who helped make the 2027 route possible. “Every edition of the Absa Cape Epic is built on partnerships. We are incredibly grateful to the landowners, farmers, trail builders, local communities and stakeholders who open their properties, share their trails and work alongside us to bring this event to life.”Burger said that support had been particularly important following the floods earlier this year.“ Many people have gone above and beyond to restore trails, repair infrastructure and help us create a route that showcases the very best of the Western Cape.” The 2027 Absa Cape Epic will see riders cover more than 700km

and approximately 17,000m of climbing across eight days of racing, culminating in Wellington at Imbuko Wines, owned by the Van Zijl and Zenzen families. For every rider, however, the route is about far more than statistics. It is about partnership, perseverance and discovering what lies beyond the limits they once thought possible. It is about drawing a line between who they are today and who they become by the time they reach the finish. Three iconic host regions. One unforgettable journey. In 2027, the Absa Cape Epic enters a new era. And for every rider bold enough to take on the challenge, it begins with one decision, one start line and one line that changes everything.

ROVERS MARCH INTO THE FINALS

RUGBY GOLD CUP TOP 16

Villager dumped out of Gold Cup AVRIL FILLIES illager from Brookside will have to try again next year to win the coveted Gold Cup after they were eliminated in the Top 16 by Durbell in the Southern Bracket on Saturday 3 October. Durbell progressed to the quarterfinals after a 32-27 victory and will fly the Western Province Rugby Union's flag when they take on Roses United from Wellington, Boland's representative in the contest. Villager were looking for their third trophy this year, after being crowned back-to-back Super League A champions and President's Cup winners, but it was not to be. Despite the defeat three players, Giuliano de Franchi, Thoubaan Gabriels and William Rose, celebrated 50 caps. It was always going to be an uphill battle for both teams and it was only going to be who wants it the most. Last year Hamiltons were in the same boat as Villager when the latter beat them in their quarter-finals in a Cape derby and Villager progressed to the final where Naka Bulls were too strong and were crowned back-to-back winners of the Gold Cup. Roses United, the reigning champions at

BACK-TO-BACK SUPER LEAGUE A CHAMPIONS AND PRESIDENT’S CUP WINNERS the 2026 Thurlow Marsh Easter Festival, beat Bloemfontein Police 24-12. Roses are hoping to progress to the final. The team is also competing in the Top 12 of Boland Rugby and was supposed to fulfill this commitment this coming Saturday 10 October, but the Gold Cup will get first priority. Last year Robertson Town was in the same situation and had to play on the Saturday in the Gold Cup and the Sunday in the Top 12, which disadvantaged the team. Depending on Roses United's performances thus far, the Top 12 will be postponed until further notice. With SK-Walmers and Villager out of the picture in the Gold Cup, all Super League A teams will support Durbell to go all the way for WP. Roses United's counterpart who fell short in the Gold Cup were Saldanha. Durbell will travel to Wellington on Saturday 10 October for their quarter-final, while College Rovers take on Gardens in Durban on the same day.
