The City of Cape Town has temporarily closed a portion of the Rietvlei waterbody as a precautionary measure after recent water-quality tests revealed elevated E coli levels.
The closure, which came into effect last week, affects all recreational water sports –including boating, rowing, and windsurfing – in the section adjacent to the Bayside Canal inlet

Moved by the unseen heroes behind the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Beach Safety Camera
Project, South African filmmaker and ocean enthusiast
Kabeer Shaik has dedicated his craft to raising awareness of its life-saving work His is just one of 11 camera projects underway in Bloubergstrand Earlier this year Shaik visited the NSRI Volunteer Support Centre, where he was introduced to the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the innovative camera network that monitors coastal hotspots
What he witnessed left a lasting impression “I spend a lot of time in the ocean, and seeing how the NSRI uses technology and teamwork to save lives has struck a deep chord within me I knew I wanted to contribute in a meaningful way ”
The result is a powerful awareness video, based on a real rescue at Strand Beach, where a camera operator spotted a 10-year-old boy named Matthew caught in a rip current With no lifeguards on duty yet the operator swiftly activated a response team, guiding them to Matthew just in time
“Our operator never took her eyes off him,” NSRI CEO Mike Vonk related “Although in a control room she was emotionally right there with him ”

Mandela Day should be every day
It was truly heartwarming to read about how so many people were inspired to reach out to the less fortunate on Mandela Day
I sat with my heart blazing imagining the smiles that must have lit so many faces
But it didn't last
Why is this overflow of ubuntu reserved for only one day a year?
Why can't we love our neighbours more steadfastly throughout the year?
Why do we need a special day to make giving a habit?
If dedicating a day is truly all that is needed to motivate people then why not dedicate more days?
Like Valentines Day Instead of making it a day of romantic love why not make it a day of loving our neighbours?
Why not add an element of giving to every major day? On Heritage Day, donate some of your braai or on April Fool's Day, donate some of your cheer On youth day, do something good for youth
The more significant days I think about the more I realise that all of them have theme that is open to interpretation in charitable ways but they've become mostly about politics
Maybe it's time that started adding charity to our mindsets, starting with celebrations on significant days Maybe then we'll turn the tide of poverty in our country
