When will we feel the difference, not just read about it?”

Malcolm Adams, Table View: “Property values here are sliding because nobody wants to buy near a polluted lagoon The City must move faster or compensate homeowners ”

Sipho Langa, Joe Slovo: “The pumps break, sewage backs up into our streets and kids play around it Maintenance has to become more than PowerPoint slides ” Amal Isaacs, Parklands: “Telemetry is great, but give us a public dashboard so we can see in real time which station is down and why ”

Carla Ferreira, Bloubergstrand: “Parents need transparent air–quality data, not technical reports we can’t find online

The permanent monitor must go live on schedule no excuses ”

Michaela Gabriel wrote on Facebook’s ReThinktheStink group: “If you woke up in Milnerton this morning coughing, nauseous, battling a pounding headache or gasping for air and then checked the SAAQIS app (as recommended at last week’s Milnerton Lagoon community meeting) you were probably met with a cheerful screen full of green smiley faces telling you everything was ‘excellent’ Even in areas like Khayelitsha, where the air is routinely choked with smoke from burning plastic, treated wood and other

toxic waste, the official message was the same: breathe easy ”

DEADLINES,DIRECTIVESANDNEXTSTEPS

The provincial Department of Environmental Affairs has amended its directive to align with the City’s construction schedule something Badroodien insists “does not extend our deadlines; it simply reflects realistic engineering windows”

Major milestones now loom: ultrafiltration trains by August this year, a new sludge–dewatering facility a month earlier, and the headline membrane–bioreactor by October 2027 Council engineers say each phase should shave more contaminants from the effluent, “bending the curve” on lagoon pollution long before the final handover Until then, community members vow to keep the pressure on

“Thank you to the residents of Milnerton for your continued commitment to safeguarding the health of the Milnerton Lagoon “At the quarterly Milnerton Lagoon Public Meeting, we were once again reminded of the power of an engaged community “

“Your thoughtful questions and sustained participation help shape our response, drive accountability, and ensure transparency,” Badroodien said

Ward councillors and officials from Subcouncil 3 joined Mayco member for community services and health, Francine Higham, on a day–long inspection of community assets in Parklands, Table View, Phoenix, Joe Slovo and Milnerton last week.

The exercise, said Higham, was designed “to see first–hand where our clinics, parks and halls are thriving and where they need extra care”

The first stop was Table View Clinic, which continues to deliver maternal, child–health, HIV and TB services despite operating at capacity According to Higham, “the staff are doing exceptional work in cramped conditions A possible expansion in 2027 is on the table, but it will depend on budget availability ”

At T–shaped Park in Dorchester Drive, Parklands, residents voiced concerns about persistent dumping and sporadic

unlawful occupations “People want to feel safe in their neighbourhood park,” Higham noted “We discussed a range of interventions, from stricter enforcement to landscaping that naturally deters illegal activities ”

JOESLOVOPARKVISIT

The delegation then visited the Joe Slovo Park Community Hall, a venue in constant demand for church gatherings, sport and cultural events “While usage is high, resources for cleaning and oversight are thin Our task is to find sustainable ways to support that energy with regular maintenance and stronger programming partnerships ”

In Milnerton, construction crews have begun erecting fencing at Lupin Park, marking the first phase of an upgrade dedicated to the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu Future plans include new play equipment, seating and indigenous landscaping “Fencing signals the start of a transformation that will honour Archbishop Tutu’s legacy of compassion and community spirit,” Higham said Higham thanked the Subcouncil 3 chair and officials who took part in the tour, emphasising the City’s commitment to “nurturing safe, healthy and welcoming community spaces”

Further announcements on timelines and funding allocations are expected as budget discussions progress

Community Medics show and tell session

One of the most meaningful parts of volunteering with Community Medics is connecting with people of all ages to share their mission and the life-saving work they do

Last week, volunteer Jolene Page brought that mission to life during a fun and interactive "show and tell" session at Cedar Crest Nursery School

The young learners were enthralled as she demonstrated the role of a medic and introduced them to the essential equipment used in emergencies

Later, Kim met with the Girl Guides of Table View to deliver an inspiring talk on how to respond in emergency situations

From knowing who to call to staying calm under pressure, her message empowered the girls with knowledge and confidence

"The curiosity and enthusiasm from these bright young minds reminded us why community engagement is so important

“Who knows today’s audience could be tomorrow’s volunteers! A big thank you to Cedar Crest Nursery School and the Girl Guides of Table View for welcoming us so warmly," said Community Medics' Craig von Essen . If you ever face a medical emergency, don’t hesitate to call Community Medics on 087 230 0404.

. La Ronderuns at The Baxter from 20 June to 12 July at 20:00 (Saturday also at 15:00). A provocative play

Modern adaption of poignant play

Nothing is quite as it seems in Austrian Arthur Schnitzler’s provocative play, La Ronde, coming to the Baxter Studio stage from Friday 20 June to Saturday 12 July, at 20:00 with Saturday matinees at 15:00

Written in 1897 this is a story of ten recognisable characters from different parts of society all searching for escape and connection through sex.

Director Leila Henriques locates the story with an all Fleur du Cap award-winning cast and creative team; Awethu Hleli, Lyle October, Tamzin Daniels, Nolufefe Ntshuntshe and Carlo Daniels, along with Berenice Barbier and Aidan Scott

In a world obsessed with visibility image and performance, this modern adaptation of La Ronde probes a world where intimacy is currency, sex is a calculated strategy, and everyone is performing for someone

La Ronde, French for "the round", refers to a dance performed in circle formation and also means "from

one person to another". It creates the perfect metaphor for Schnitzel’s play, driven by raw physicality, pulsating contemporary music and visceral dance It takes a funny, provocative look at relationships now, delving into the complexities of power, desire and the relentless pursuit of connection. Through the ten characters and ten intimate encounters, it offers a sharp look at who holds power, who is exploited and who is seen.

The play is set in contemporary Cape Town and seen through the eyes of a DJ who finds the perfect track to cover each smooth or clumsy sexual encounter Far more than an erotic carousel, the play exposes the transactional nature of modern relationships, where the lines between agency, desire and self-worth are constantly blurred.

There is an age restriction of 16 years and parental guidance is advised.

THINKING OUT LOUD

j of information you consume You keep hearing people say that they heard a new movie was terrible instead of watching it themselves and offering their own unbiased opinion

Instead of freely being ourselves more people seem to latch onto the narrative of pop culture and join the "cool club" I m guilty of this too and I admit there are gems of handy advice glowing amid the "brain-rot" There's dates, delicious recipes and funny cat videos available with the swipe of a finger, but when do we

.. ENJOYTHEPRESENTTENSE, UNDERSTANDYOURWORKAND LEGACYWILLLIVEAFTERYOU

stop, reflect and allow some introspection before we fall prey to instant gratification and hits of dopamine?

It often seems more relaxing to enjoy a whole bag of crisps laying inside a warm bed binging Instagram reels or watching the latest series than finishing that new novel or completing our gym goals As a young adult enduring work traffic, deadlines, loneliness and dating disappointments, it s easy to become irritable and cynical and let our egos wreak havoc and become addicted to pleasing ourselves No pun intended there When we consider our dreams we may think have become dusty old toys we left on the shelf, but that's where the personal growth lies

We're quick to forget our progress when scrolling on social media and seeing someone who already has the kind of lifestyle we desire but hardly consider that we're only seeing a mirage someone has carefully curated to reflect their ideal selves to the world

We're obsessed with aesthetics and living life like celebrities and fear being seen as "cringe"

Especially young artists feeling exhausted about the hustle they endure creating their art and feeling upset about the views they receive and the bills that could care less about harmony and cinematography But remember, my friends, today Vincent Van Gogh's artworks are priceless despite his struggle in selling those beautiful paintings So enjoy the present tense and understand your work and legacy will live after you There's a beauty in floating in these chaotic seas of modern life, seeing how technology and social media has connected us to form relationships

Ek verwys na “Pensioner & Property Owner, Northern Suburbs” se brief “Who benefits when property prices explode?” (TygerBurger 11 Junie)

Affordable shops finally closer to home

We arrived from Namibia and settled in Duynefontein, Melkbosstrand in 1986

Prices in Melkbosstrand with the few shops were so expensive But we went to Bothasig to buy all our supplies at Shoprite and Fruit & Veg in Flamingovlei

Then Shoprite in Bothasig closed down and Checkers opened a new business there We could not afford the high prices We changed to Checkers on Eden

Bay - but later with all the changes in the shop, prices became sky high

Shops like OK Foods, Pick n Pay and Woolworths are not for the poor people of Duynefontein or Melkbosstrand Luckily a new shop opened at Bayside Table

View - a Shoprite like the one that was years ago in Bothasig; their prices are amazing

BLOSSOM VAN EEDEN-SPENCE, Duynefontein

Winter worsens road dangers

I recently drove down a road full of potholes and felt compelled to speak out The worsening condition of our local roads, especially during winter, is alarming Potholes have turned simple commutes into dangerous obstacle courses

After the recent rains the damage has only worsened This isn’t just about inconvenience or repair costs; it’s a growing safety risk How many more accidents must occur before road repairs are prioritised?

AURORA DANIELS, Milnerton

Safety is a constitutional right and not a privilege

Despite a rapidly growing population of over 90 000 residents spread across 184 km² and with crime on the rise, the Durbanville Police Station remains significantly under-resourced to ensure effective crime prevention, timely response to reported crimes and visible policing This is due to the ongoing failure of the national government through its centralised control of the police to allocate police capacity where it is needed

According to the Durbanville police, the officer to population ratio in 2023 stood at one police officer for every 858 residents This is significantly higher than the national average of 1:427 and nearly four times that of the United Nations recommended standard of one officer for every 220 people

The limited policing resources and the size of its jurisdiction impacts the Durbanville police's response times to reported crimes and the equitable delivery of policing services to all In 2023 alone, a total of 5 433 criminal cases were reported The residents of Durbanville have repeatedly raised their concerns about the delayed police response times to reported crimes and the insufficient police visibility in the face of growing safety risks

The unequal deployment of resources at Durbanville police raises concerns about its ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate In terms of section 205 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, the objects of the police service are:

.To prevent combat and investigate crime;

. To maintain public order;

. To protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property and;

. To uphold and enforce the law

To address the current shortcomings, the following urgent interventions are proposed to the Minister of Police Mr Senzo Mchunu:

. The deployment of additional police personnel and operational resources to reduce the officer to population ratio;

. The upgrade of the Durbanville Police Station to Brigadier status to reflect its operational demands;

. The devolution of policing powers to capable provincial governments like the Western Cape and certain policing powers to the City of Cape Town Metro Police Service

This call to action is not criticism of the police officers at the Durbanville Police Station who continue to serve the community with dedication and professionalism It is rather a call for the deployment of additional resources to better equip them to enhance police services as envisaged in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and the South African Police Service Act, No 68 of 1995

RadioTygerberg houBril-opskopby SpectacleWorld

Standing up for mental health

As the stigma surrounding mental illness among South African healthcare workers starts to break down, initiatives like CrazySocks4Docs is leading the charge to create a culture of openness, support and action

Spearheaded locally by the Ithemba Foundation, a non-profit entity dedicated to raising awareness of depression as a biological illness and raising funds for research on depression, the CrazySocks4Docs campaign encourages people to wear mismatched or brightly coloured socks to show solidarity with healthcare workers and students in the medicine and health sciences facing mental health challenges and, or living with a mental illness

This initiative, which was launched by Australian cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood, serves as a vibrant reminder that it is okay not to be okay

Observed annually on the first Friday of June, CrazySocks4Docs day has grown into a national movement The Ithemba Foundation partners with ten Medicine

and Health Sciences faculties across South Africa – including Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as healthcare provider Netcare to encourage students, lecturers and healthcare workers to participate in this uplifting and visible show of support

Prof Lizette Rabe, founder of the Ithemba Foundation, said social media inevitably made her aware of Toogood’s campaign

A 2024 study analysing 208 community service doctors in South Africa found that between 89% and 94% registered high emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation (a mental state where individuals experience feelings of detachment from their own body, thoughts and feelings), respectively The study found that mental illness, financial difficulties and an unmanageable volume of patients to be some of the primary contributing factors .For more information visit https:// ithembafoundation.org.za/page/ crazysocks4docs.php

VYF LUISTERAARS KRY GRATIS OOGTOETS, BRILLE

Report crime, even the small ones, CPF urges

The Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF) is urging residents to open a case at the police station whenever they are a victim of crime, no matter how small the incident may seem "When cases are officially reported, the police can track crime trends and allocate resources where they're needed most If no case is opened, the area may appear crime-free on official records, even if there have been multiple incidents.

"We've heard reports of criminal activity in certain parts of Milnerton, but without formal cases opened, the police have no record and therefore cannot respond strategically Help us help you – always open a case It strengthens our CPF efforts and ensures better safety planning for our community," the CPF says.
