RESIDENTS PETITION CITY FOLLOWING PUBLIC DISORDER

Festival sparks safety concerns CARINA ROUX esidents of Rouxville, Kuils River have petitioned the City of Cape Town following public disorder during and after the recent Kuils River Festival held at the Gen-to-Gen Church last weekend. In it affected residents raised concerns about public safety, public disorder, traffic, litter, noise, public drinking and the movement of large numbers of people through residential streets. A formal complaint and request for investigation were submitted to the City's Events Permit Office and a public-safety complaint was registered with the City's Public Emergency Communication Centre on Saturday evening (29 August). The petitioners stated the action was not directed against the church's religious activities or the right of its congregation to worship, but took issue with the nature, scale, management and community impact of the festival.

FOTO: CARINA ROUX

COMMUNITY DIVIDED The petition, posted on social media by a resident, drew a mixed response. Those defending the church argue it cannot

RESIDENTS RAISE CONCERNS ABOUT LITTER, NOISE AND PUBLIC DRINKING AT GEN-TO-GEN EVENT be held responsible for what people do outside its premises. They point to security measures put in place by the organisers, including extra security hired this year. Some said that within the church grounds everything was in order and controlled. Another said teenagers who arrived drunk were not allowed in and the church closed the event early as a result. One questioned why residents had not approached church leadership directly before going to social media. It was also noted the festival gave back to the community. Those supporting the petition described fights, traffic obstruction, even gunfire. They said Saturday night was the worst. One resident said last year men were fighting and bumped into her and she feared for her family's safety.

Soneike wins coding competition

O

n Friday a team from Soneike High School's Coding Club received the Amazon Coding Cup for winning the Amazon Flagship Coding 4 Africa Competition, a regional event hosted at Amazon's Cape Town headquarters earlier this year. The tournament utilised the Tangible coding platform, an 'unplugged' coding initiative developed by Tangible Africa. Learners arrange physical jigsaw puzzle tokens to build code sequences, which are then scanned using a mobile application. Team member Albert Matthys said he enjoyed the opportunity to meet other teams and to share thoughts. He explained that each team member had a role but also needed to work together. "If we take a photo of the puzzle pieces, it will run a code to the character in the game. And that character will basically do the code."

HIGH SCHOOL WINS AMAZON CODING CUP Matthys said coding really helped him with problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The provincial education department's Deputy Chief Education Specialist for Coding and Robotics, Ashric Don, said Soneike High School is one of the pilot schools for coding and robotics programmes in the province. "They have been running the Tangible programme now for the last two or three years." He said the value of coding clubs is that it gives learners space to think, build, lead and solve problems together. Soneike's team will now progress to the national competition.

F ROM PAGE 1 Her family now locks their doors when the festival is on. Others said if the church cannot control the festival it should be stopped, alleging that children and adults were drunk, that fights broke out and people carried weapons. FAMILY'S ACCOUNT A family living close to the church, who reported having tolerated the church's events for many years without objection, described the impact on their household. They said hundreds of people spilled into the surrounding area and onto neighbouring properties, entering private properties without permission, blocking their driveway, triggering their security alarm, damaging their fence and leaving significant litter. They reported witnessing fighting, including what appeared to be gangrelated altercations and observing an individual who appeared to be carrying a firearm. The family mentioned that the church eventually closed the event after it had become apparent that the situation was out of control, but hundreds of people remained in the area afterwards. CITY OF CAPE TOWN RESPONSE On enquiry the City of Cape Town confirmed the Gen-to-Gen Church had been issued with a permit to host the

Kuils River Festival from 27 to 29 August. The church had complied with the events bylaw and other statutory requirements for a permit. The City said the Events Permit Office had received and noted the complaints submitted by residents in the vicinity of the venue. A permit officer was expected to meet with the event organisers to discuss the matter and possible remedial action to avoid a repeat in future. CHURCH RESPONSE Gen-to-Gen Church posted a statement on its Facebook page (on Wednesday 2 September), signed by senior pastor Derrick Grobbelaar, acknowledging the concerns raised by residents. "We are aware of the concerns raised by residents within the immediate vicinity of our church regarding the unfortunate incidents/events that took place during and after our festival ended. We take these concerns seriously and are particularly concerned by reports that some residents felt threatened or unsafe." The church said it did not condone unlawful, threatening or unruly behaviour of any nature and concerns would be carefully considered as part of the planning of future events. "Where appropriate we will engage constructively with the relevant authorities and the community regarding reasonable and practical measures for future events," Grobbelaar stated.

Constable arrested in Delft COMMISSIONER ISSUES STERN ANTICORRUPTIONS WARNING TO POLICE

BRENDEN RUITER

T

BRENDEN.RUITER@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

he Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Sizakhele Dyantyi, has issued a stern warning to police officers engaged in corrupt activities, following an incident in which a police constable was arrested for corruption on Monday 31 August, at the Delft Police Station. According to Sgt Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, the arrest came after members of the Anti-Corruption Unit followed up on information about a case

docket that went missing. “A thorough investigation into the case was conducted and the member was identified and arrested,” said Twigg. Delft police station is fifth on the national list of murder cases, as announced recently by the national police

commissioner. The ongoing Madlanga Commission, investigating corruption in the criminal justice system, has shone the spotlight on corrupt activities reaching the highest offices in the country. Since last week Dr Godfrey Lebeya, the former national head of the Directorate of Priority Crime, was grilled by commissioners on alleged involvement in corrupt activities. The public is urged to use the AntiCorruption Hotline number 0800 701 701 to report any corrupt activities involving police members.

Call to community to protect buses BRENDEN RUITER

BRENDEN.RUITER@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS) says bus vandalism is not merely a company issue, but a community safety concern that puts passengers and drivers at risk and takes vital vehicles off the road. Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, GABS spokesperson, was responding to a statement by the Democratic Alliance (DA) calling on communities to help

protect public transport infrastructure following an alarming 582 incidents of bus stoning between 1 April and 31 July 2026, compared with 1 896 incidents recorded during the 2025/26 financial year. “The incidents have serious consequences for commuters, drivers and public transport operations. During the first four months of 2026/27, three passengers were injured in GABS busstoning incidents, while the estimated

damage to GABS buses amounted to R2.81 million,” the DA statement read. Dyke-Beyer says GABS welcomes the DA's call for communities to help protect public transport infrastructure. “We urge communities across Cape Town to join our call: 'Hands off our buses'. Whatever the concern, vandalism is not the answer. Our buses are there to serve communities, and protecting them is a shared responsibility,” she says.

R800m has been released, says SANDF BRENDEN RUITER BRENDEN.RUITER@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

The National Treasury said in a statement that more than R800 million meant for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), which is fighting gangsterism in Cape Town, had been released, contrary to media reports. According to the Treasury’s statement, the Minister of Finance approved the release of funding for Operation Prosper in terms of section 6(1)(c) of the Appropriation Act. BEST AVAILABLE MECHANISM “This provision was the best available mechanism to ensure the earliest

release of funds, given the timing of the announcement. The Act was assented to on 16 July 2026, which provided the Minister of Finance with the legal authority to release the funds,” reads the statement. NEWS ARTICLE STATEMENT The statement follows an article in News24 on 14 August which quoted MajorGeneral Thulare as saying that funding had not been released for Operation Prosper. “News24 sent a media query to the National Treasury regarding the issue, to which the Treasury responded on Friday 14 August 2026.

.

“The National Treasury is particularly concerned that News24 did not capture its detailed response in the article. This would have afforded the National Treasury the opportunity to place on record that funding had been released, contrary to the statements made by Major-General Thulare, and in line with the relevant legal prescripts. “Furthermore, the National Treasury has twice written to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) offering support in dealing with its broader funding challenges, but has yet to receive a response.” Thulare is the SANDF commander heading Operation Prosper.

How do parents talk to about apartheid? M

ore than 30 years after apartheid ended South African families still struggle to talk to their children about the oppressive regime’s intergenerational trauma. A collaborative study involving researchers from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), the University of the Free State (UFS) and the University of Missouri in the US shows that many families avoid initiating conversations about apartheid’s psychological and emotional impact with children born after democracy. Instead, they wait for their children to ask questions or express curiosity before raising the difficult subject. The study, published in the Journal of Family Communication, explored how South African parents from different racial backgrounds speak to their children about apartheid, and found that families use a range of approaches to explain one of the country’s most painful chapters. Researchers interviewed 22 parents representing all four racial groups classified under apartheid, namely black, white, coloured and Indian. The researchers included PhD candidate Tessa Goldschmidt of the Department of Psychology at UWC, Prof Haley Kranstuber Horstman of the University of Missouri, US-based independent scholar Olivia Watson, senior lecturer Prof Diana Breshears of UFS, and independent researcher Dr Athena Pedro. INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA The study argues that although apartheid was abolished in 1994 its legacy continues to shape South African society, with families having to navigate its historical trauma across generations. Researchers

STUDY REVEALS TRAUMA IS STILL SILENCING PAINFUL HISTORY DISCUSIONS IN FAMILIES said this intergenerational trauma could have lasting mental, physical and relational effects, including increased uncertainty, stress and anxiety as well as family dysfunction in subsequent generations. One parent, a black woman, refrained from discussing apartheid with her young children and had no intention of doing so. The rest of the parents reported that they discussed apartheid with their children to some degree. Most did so in response to something their children had said, heard or experienced. These conversations were generally unplanned, with various external events, such as discussions at school, prompting them. Sometimes children personally experienced racism and told their parents, who then helped them make sense of the experience. FOUR APPROACHES Four approaches emerged during discussions: responding, empowering, shielding and recognising progress. Some parents took a responsive approach, answering only when their children asked. These parents waited for their children to express curiosity about apartheid or something they had learned at school or seen in the media. These discussions were often shaped by the child’s age and level of understanding. Others focused on empowering their

children. These parents believed it was important for young people to understand the injustices of apartheid so they could develop empathy, appreciate diversity and contribute to building a more equal society. By sharing family experiences and historical facts, they hoped their children would learn from the past rather than repeat it. A third group adopted a shielding approach, trying to protect their children from the emotional pain associated with apartheid by limiting how much they shared and delaying these conversations until they believed their children were mature enough to process them. For some families, the trauma of apartheid remained deeply personal, making these discussions particularly difficult. Most parents emphasised recognising progress. While they acknowledged the lasting effects of apartheid they also encouraged their children to appreciate how far South Africa had come since the transition to democracy. These

conversations often focused on hope, reconciliation and the importance of working together to create a better future. SHAPING THE NEXT GENERATION Researchers said the different approaches highlighted the important role families played in shaping how younger generations understood history. Conversations at home could influence how children made sense of identity, race, fairness and belonging long after they had learnt about apartheid in the classroom. “These findings deepen scholarly and practical understanding of intergenerational family conversations about historical events, particularly those involving racial discrimination,’’ the researchers said. They noted that storytelling could help families have honest, age-appropriate conversations that acknowledged painful experiences while fostering hope and empathy and equipping young people to help build a more inclusive future.

School gets new computer labs

N

ewly refurbished computer laboratories were handed over at J.S. Klopper Primary School in Elsies River and De Waveren Primary School in Ruyterwacht. The projects were completed through GrandWest's Social Impact programme, through which it supports initiatives that help communities thrive and create more opportunities for young people. Recognising that access to technology remains out of reach for many learners, the computer lab refurbishments aim to create safe, modern learning spaces where they can develop the digital skills increasingly needed for success in both the classroom and the world of work. HUGE INVESTMENT With an investment of more than R1,7 million, the two labs will create new opportunities for both learners and educators to engage with technology in meaningful ways. The facilities will support everything from literacy and numeracy development to coding, research and digital skills, helping young people build the confidence and capabilities they need for the future. Mervyn Naidoo, General Manager of GrandWest says: “Education opens doors, but meaningful learning increasingly depends on access to technology. By investing in modern computer laboratories, we're helping create environments where learners can develop the digital skills they'll need throughout their education and future careers.

GRANDWEST SPONSORS TECH EQUIPMENT AT TWO PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Supporting schools in our neighbouring communities remains an important part of our commitment to creating lasting social impact.” Lynette Schoor, Principal of J.S. Klopper Primary School says: “For many of our learners, access to a computer outside of school is simply not a reality. This new computer lab gives them a space where they can become comfortable with technology, develop important digital skills and experience new ways of learning. We are incredibly grateful to GrandWest for recognising this need and investing in an opportunity that will make a real difference in our learners' education.” Eduard Hattingh, Principal of De Waveren Primary School, says this computer lab is an important addition to the school and to the way they are able to support the learners. “It gives our teachers another tool to strengthen learning, particularly for children who need additional academic support, while giving learners valuable exposure to technology. We appreciate GrandWest's continued support of our school and the difference this investment will make in the classroom,” he says.

CREATING ACCESS At J.S. Klopper Primary School, which serves 972 learners in Elsies River with many children having little or no access to computers or the internet outside the classroom. The refurbished laboratory will allow learners to participate in Western Cape Education Department digital learning initiatives, improve literacy and numeracy through technology-based programmes, and develop practical computer, coding and research skills. The project is valued at R869 290. The project also builds on GrandWest's existing relationship with the school. In 2025, the organisation donated stationery worth R260,000 to 484 Foundation Phase learners, further strengthening its support for education within the community. A similar contribution has been made at De Waveren Primary School in Ruyterwacht, where the refurbished computer laboratory gives learners and

educators access to a modern digital learning space. Serving a disadvantaged, no-fee school community, the facility will be used to strengthen remedial learning programmes while giving learners better access to technology. The project, valued at R869,461.19, was handed over on 3 June 2026. The latest initiative follows earlier support provided to the school. In 2023, GrandWest sponsored the refurbishment of De Waveren's kitchen and dining facilities, helping improve the overall learning environment and supporting learner wellbeing. For many learners, these labs will provide regular access to computers and digital learning tools they may not otherwise have. Beyond supporting classroom learning, the facilities will give learners the confidence to use technology, explore new ways of learning and develop skills that will benefit them long after they leave school.

THINKING OUT LOUD

Don’t just jump on the party bus this election Before backing a party in the local government elections, voters should ask three questions about its ideas: Does it make historical sense? Does it make political sense? Does it make moral sense? As young South Africans, how often do we stop to ask where the ideas we support come from? Can they actually work? And if they do, are they right? Or do we simply ask whether they sound good or speak to our frustrations? This makes me think about a bus. If I were standing at a bus stop, I would want to know where the bus was going. But the destination would not be enough. I would want to know who was driving, which route we were taking, and whether the bus had made the journey before. Politics is not so different. As South Africa moves towards the 2026 local government elections, political parties will offer different destinations: better services, more jobs, economic freedom, safer communities. But a destination on a sign does not tell us everything about the journey. This matters because political identities can be inherited long before political beliefs are properly examined. We may support a party because our parents do, or reject one because of what we have experienced. But at some point, we have to ask: what do I actually believe? Does it make historical sense? South African politics cannot be separated from our history. Colonialism and apartheid shaped who held power, who owned land, who had access to education and where people could live. That history still influences how many vote. For many South Africans, the ANC’s history as a liberation movement remains important. For others, its record in government carries more weight. The EFF has found support among voters frustrated by inequality

..

and land ownership, while the DA has built its identity around liberal democracy and effective government. The Patriotic Alliance has gained support around crime, migration and political representation. These parties offer different answers to what South Africa should become. Understanding where those ideas come from does not mean agreeing with them, but we cannot understand the road ahead if we refuse to look at the road behind us. Does it make political sense? Can it work? A party can promise jobs – how will those jobs be created? It can promise housing – where will the money and land come from? It can promise redistribution – how will wealth continue to be created? A slogan is not a plan. A promise is not a guarantee. Local government makes this particularly clear. Politics is visible in our daily lives: whether bins are collected, lights stay on, water reaches our homes and roads are maintained. These involve choices about money, priorities and responsibility. Parties should be judged by what they say and what they do with power. The DA has governed the Western Cape since 2009 and Cape Town since 2006, so its record can be measured against its promises. The same standard must apply to every party. No party should receive a free pass. Does it make moral sense? Even if it works, is it right? A policy can be effective and still cause harm. A government can deliver economic growth while leaving people behind. Politics is not only about what we want to achieve but also about what we are willing to do to other people to achieve it. Perhaps we spend too much time deciding what we are against and not enough time deciding what we are for. “Anyone but them” is not a political philosophy. As young South Africans, we have an opportunity to develop political beliefs of our own rather than simply inherit them. If I believe in accountability, I should demand it from the party I support. If I believe in human dignity, that principle should not change depending on who is affected. And if I change my mind after learning something new, that does not make me disloyal. Before we get on the political bus, we should ask more questions. We may never know exactly where the journey will end. But we can choose whether the driver, the route and the direction are ones we are willing to trust. - NAMHLA MONAKALI

What we need is more accountability With reference to the letter, "Static response is disingenuous" in TygerBurger on 2 September, I completely disagree. Firstly, whether you're driving uphill or downhill, the speed limit does not change. You as a driver are responsible to stick to it. And if you get caught speeding, be it uphill or downhill, take responsibility and just pay the fine. From experience, it's the guys who got caught with their hands in the cookie jar that are first to complain. And yes, it's easy to complain hiding behind your anonymity. Secondly, just because you don't see it does not mean it doesn't happen. The city is big and there are only so many traffic officials. What we really need is

more accountability from motorists, whether you drive a taxi, car, bus or truck. Yes, maybe traffic services can do more, but they can't be everywhere at once. The reality I witness day after day is that your average motorist has just as much disregard for the rules of the road as some taxi drivers — yellow-lane passing, skipping stop streets, jumping red lights, passing over solid white lines, and driving against oncoming traffic. And that's despite passing various traffic services vehicles in my daily commute. For instance, this morning I passed five — two provincial and three City of Cape Town vehicles. Of these, two were clearly out on visibility patrols — one in the process of pulling a bakkie over on the N1 — and the others were dealing

with infringements next to the road, of which one was a taxi. Motorists behave when they see traffic officials, but as soon as they're out of sight, the bad behaviour returns. What you refer to as "static response" is also necessary. The officials don't just pick a spot they think will be easy money; they put their cameras in spots where there are regular complaints. To this I can attest, living in a neighbourhood bordering a busy through road where speeding is a huge problem and residents regularly complain. The same goes for them popping up at the stop street in a quiet neighbourhood; it's usually a response to regular complaints. Esther, DURBANVILLE

Is daar enige geldige rede waarom niks daaraan

Waarnemer, BELLVILLE

Cattle in suburbia are a problem As a municipal taxpayer and senior citizen of Kuils River I'm very upset that cattle, goats and sheep are grazing freely on fields, pavements, private property and crossing the main road in search of further grazing while one herdsman attempts to control up to 70 animals at a time. My car was bumped by a cow in Mitchell street recently when cattle moved across the main road. No response from the police, metro police, or Kuils River municipality, although Cape Town emergency services advised that the matter would be attended

to. The stench of the animal dung and manure causes flies, blue flies and gnats entering houses. Living less than 100 meters from the canal, my wife can’t open the backdoor as the insects swarm in especially when preparing food. This couldn't-care-less attitude is not acceptable. It's becoming a serious health and security issue. Surely the owners of the animals have a responsibility and are obligated to find other suitable grazing. Kevin Quinton , KUILSRIVER

Of moet iemand eers sterf voordat opgetree word? Deon Venter, E-POS

Jammer, DA, in my oë faal julle. Eliza Ridgeworth, E-POS

City joins global road safety drive DESIRÉE RORKE

T

DESIREE.RORKE@TYGERBURGER.CO.ZA

he City of Cape Town has signed on to the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), gaining access to world-leading road safety expertise and four full-time professionals embedded at the City for the next four years. The initiative links more than 30 cities worldwide in implementing evidencebased measures to cut traffic deaths and injuries. For Cape Town, the partnership arrives just as the City’s transport planning and network management team begins rolling out the recently approved Road Safety Strategy. Projects stemming from the partnership will be managed by the urban mobility directorate in close collaboration with traffic services. Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said the timing could not be better. “The launch of this exciting partnership is perfectly timed as our transport planning teams embark on the implementation of the City’s recently approved road safety strategy, which ultimately directs our efforts in making Cape Town’s roads safer and reducing the number of accidents and loss of life,” he said. The updated strategy addresses safety for pedestrians, other non-motorised road users, and passengers, especially scholars and public transport users. “We are aligned to what we know is one of the greatest drivers for the BIGRS, which is to assist cities in creating a transport system that allows people to move safely and efficiently,” Quintas said. BIGRS director of injury prevention Kelly Larson said the initiative helps cities implement a proven package of lifesaving activities, with a strong focus on data collection and surveillance, changing road-user behaviour, and improving road infrastructure.

INITIATIVE LINKS CITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD TO SHARE EXPERTISE OF FULL-TIME PROFESSIONALS

“We are thrilled to be in Cape Town this week to mark the start of our new partnership with the City of Cape Town,” Larson said. “We are certain that Cape Town will achieve great success in their efforts over the next few years and plan to support the team with the experience and resources we have to offer.” The City leads the development, coordination, and oversight of road safety initiatives. Through the strategy, priorities include safer pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, improved safety around schools, safer walking and cycling environments, public awareness campaigns, and targeted enforcement in high-risk locations. “In a few years’ time, we want to see a stronger road safety culture here in Cape Town with fewer serious injuries and lives lost to accidents that were in fact preventable on many occasions,” Quintas said. “I can’t wait to see all the innovative projects that have already been implemented successfully abroad, and which ones could be implemented here to keep Cape Town moving safely.” PROGRESSED TO BE TRACKED Since 2007, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety has worked with governments and international and local partners to pass nearly 200 national, state, and city policies, protecting 4,2 billion people and saving an estimated 900 000 lives, according to the organisation’s website. The initiative has also improved safety

features in 135 car models, redesigned more than 2 400 dangerous intersections, and trained nearly 80 000 traffic police across 22 countries. The initiative implements a comprehensive package of activities proven to save lives, focusing on five key areas. This includes strengthening national legislation, enhancing data collection and surveillance, changing road-user behaviour, improving road infrastructure, and upgrading vehicle safety. Its next phase aims to save one million additional lives through 2030.The initiative includes the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI), which helps cities design streets that increase biking rates, revitalise neighbourhoods, and

promote community health and well-being. Since 2022, BICI’s competitive grant programme has reached two million people across 10 cities, building over 200 miles of safe cycling facilities and preventing 8 000 crashes. It anticipates a reduction of 97 000 tons of CO2 emissions by 2040. For Cape Town, the partnership will bring technical assistance and training from experts in the world’s leading road safety organisations, benefiting the City’s Transport Planning and Network Management team as they implement the recently approved Road Safety Strategy. The City has assured residents that progress from the partnership will be tracked, with interventions and resources directed to areas of greatest need.

GLOBAL MOVEMENT Cape Town will join communities around the world in the 15th annual World Singing Day, founded in 2012 by Colorado musician Scott Johnson. The movement’s central message is: “Sing together. Unite the world.” “South Africa has something distinctive to contribute,” Poulsen said. “Our extraordinary singing tradition is renowned for its emotional depth, rhythmic vitality, rich harmonies and ability to communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries.” Sampson said music had enabled her to bridge divides among people from all walks of life. “Even during Apartheid, music played a very significant role in building our morale, giving us courage and uniting us to stand against the evils of human unkindness and intolerance. It is still doing this, even today,” she said.

A portion of ticket proceeds will support the Red Cross Memorial Children’s Trust and the SA Children’s Home. Five choirs will receive sponsored participation, opening the experience to singers who might otherwise not have the opportunity to take part. The programme will include Lionel Richie’s “Love Oh Love”, “Room for Everyone”, the World Singing Day song, and Johnny Clegg’s “Osiyeza”, alongside other community songs. The event builds on the success of The Heartsong Collective’s 2025 event at Kalk Bay Community Hall, where audiences were invited to become part of the music. “We want people to leave feeling that, for a moment, they belonged to something bigger than themselves,” Poulsen said. “When 1 400 people breathe together, sing together and hear their voices become one, something very powerful happens.” General public tickets cost R200. Choir group bookings are R100 per person and disadvantaged choir groups R50 per person. Tickets are available at quicket.co.za. Block bookings for choirs can be made by emailing lynne@theheartsongcollective.co.za

Ballet and art unite in Tokai Cape Town City Ballet and Norval Foundation to present Velvet Feathers, an intimate production set against the art, architecture and landscapes of the Norval Foundation Art Museum in Tokai on Saturday 26 September at 12:30 and 18:00. On Sunday 27 September the production will take place at 14:30. For three performances only, the production will bring together classical ballet with the visual poetry of the museum and sculpture garden. Featuring excerpts from Swan Lake alongside David Nixon's Winter Dances,

The call is out for 1 400 voices to join Cape Town’s celebration of World Singing Day on Saturday 17 October at Groote Kerk, Adderley Street. Hosted by The Heartsong Collective, a local non-profit community choir, and Uthando South Africa, the event will feature guest appearances by Vicky Sampson and Khayelitsha-based singer/songwriter Mohau Moahloli. The audience becomes the choir at the event, which runs from 18:30 to 21:00. Lyrics will be provided so that everyone can take part, regardless of musical background or singing experience. The theme, “One country. One voice. One day”, celebrates what unites South Africans rather than what divides them, bringing people of different ages, cultures, faiths and communities into one shared experience. “It is an expression of ubuntu: the understanding that our humanity is strengthened through our connection with one another,” Heartsong Collective founder Lynne Poulsen said. The song at the heart of the event will be a South African adaptation of Matisyahu’s “One Day”.
