FIGURES SHOW SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS

Bothasig CPF responds to latest crime stats

F

ollowing the release of the first quarter crime statistics for 2026-’27 on Friday last week, the Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) says despite an encouraging overall decline in serious crime, increases in robbery, hijacking and commercial crime remain a concern for the community. The first quarter covers the period April to June and compares the period between 2022 to 2026. Mario Borchards, CPF chair, said compared between April and June this year and the same period in 2025, the statistics show that the 17 community reported serious crime categories decreased by 37 cases, from 286 to 249 — a 12,9% reduction.

CAPTURING A HISTORIC FAREWELL Desmond Tutu first to arrive at Walter Sisulu’s funeral, as captured by French-born photographer Patrick de Mervelec. Mervelec’s work is among those featured at the second Cape Town Photography Festival taking place from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 26 September. The festival will feature 40 exhibitions and more than 160 photographers at venues across the city. It explores the theme of “Truth” – an exploration of how truths are produced, challenged and resisted. “I’d like visitors to encounter an image that makes them stop, question something they thought they understood, or see their own world in a new way,” says de Mervelec, who settled in South Africa in the 1990s. The festival is also contributing to conversations around a national music photography archive, an initiative that grew from concerns about preserving South Africa’s photographic record of its musical heritage. STRONG IMPROVEMENT One of the strongest improvements was recorded in property-related crime, which fell by almost 40%. Cases dropped from 68 to 41, with residential burglaries declining by 13 cases and theft from motor vehicles falling by 12 cases, he said. The figures also show a significant reduction in several serious violent crimes. Attempted murder dropped from seven cases to one, while assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm declined from six cases to one. Sexual offences decreased from seven to three cases. No murders were recorded during either of the two comparison periods, he

CPF CAUTIONS OPTIMISM ON IMPROVEMENTS said. However, the overall improvement should not create a false sense of security, said Borchards. INCREASES Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 12 to 19 cases. Common robbery also increased slightly, from nine to ten cases. Of particular concern is the increase in hijacking. Three hijackings were recorded during April to June this year, compared with none during the corresponding period in 2025. The statistics also recorded one truck hijacking this year. The increase in robbery-related crime highlights the importance of continued visible policing, hot-spot patrols, and cooperation between the police, the CPF, neighbourhood watches, private security, and residents, said Borchards. Commercial crime is another area requiring attention. Cases increased from 60 to 69, an increase of 15%. Residents and businesses are therefore urged to remain particularly vigilant against fraud, scams, and other financially motivated crimes. TO PAGE 4

ape Town’s City Council has approved an updated road safety strategy following a public participation process, placing particular focus on pedestrians, cyclists, scholars and public transport users. The strategy directs the City’s efforts towards making Cape Town’s 10 400 km road network safer and reducing accidents and loss of life. Drafted in April, the strategy that reflects current conditions and emerging road safety challenges was open for comment in May to June. The main change is a broader focus on preventing deaths and serious injuries for all road users, rather than treating road safety primarily as a traffic-enforcement issue. The strategy specifically highlights pedestrians and other non-motorised users, including people walking and cycling. It is being backed by practical infrastructure programmes such as plans to invest in pedestrian and cycling facilities, universally accessible sidewalks, road maintenance and traffic-calming measures. Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said road safety is a key priority and every road user deserves to travel safely, whether walking, cycling, using public transport or driving. “We thank all the residents and organisations who provided valuable input to our Transport Network Safety team. The suggestions helped our specialists with further insight to how road safety affects our various communities and their commuting across Cape Town,” he said. “Existing initiatives involving schools, communities and local stakeholders will

be strengthened and expanded where opportunities exist, recognising that road safety is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration between government, residents, educational institutions and civil society organisations so that, together, we can all keep Cape Town moving, safely.” Through the strategy, the City will prioritise safer pedestrian crossings, traffic calming measures, improved road safety around schools, safer walking and cycling environments, public awareness campaigns and targeted enforcement in high-risk locations. The City says it has allocated more than R1,9 billion for road maintenance in 2026’27. Enforcement is also getting tougher, with the City’s amended traffic by-law that was gazetted in July. This gives traffic officers powers to impound vehicles in situations including illegal street racing, driving under the influence, reckless driving that poses an immediate danger, and certain numberplate offences, the City told the newspaper in response to an earlier media enquiry regarding road safety. And, the scale of the problem is significant with the City's traffic service recording almost four million offences between July 2025 and June this year, of which 2 138 were drunkdriving arrests, up 32% from the previous year.

Free access to selected SanParks’ protected areas The 21st annual South African National Parks (SANParks) Week will be from 7 to 13 September. The initiative provides South African day visitors with free access to participating national parks during the designated week. The campaign opens the gates of participating national parks to South African day visitors at no charge, creating an opportunity for families, communities, schools, nature lovers and first-time visitors to experience some of the country's most spectacular protected areas. However, Kruger National Park, West Coast National Park and Augrabies Falls National Park will offer free access from Monday 7 to Friday 11 September only, excluding the weekend. Namaqua National Park, the Boulders Penguin Colony Section of Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway are not included. HOW TO QUALIFY FOR FREE ENTRY To qualify for free access, South Africans must present their identity documents, whilst children below the age of 18 will not be required to provide identification. The free access does not include accommodation, guided activities, game drives or other tourist activities, as these carry their normal fees. Individual parks may also have different entry conditions and visitor limits. Since its inception in 2006, SA National Parks Week has become one of SANParks' flagship public awareness initiatives, attracting hundreds of thousands of day visitors and helping to strengthen public appreciation of South Africa's national parks and the vital role they play in conservation. In 2025 alone, more than 105 000 visitors took advantage of the free-access initiative, SANParks says. Skin care nets Nedbank award

T

anya du Bois, the award winner, is the founder of Naturals Beauty, a Cape Town based skin-care brand. She stood out from more than 740 entrepreneurs, a spokesperson for Nedbank said. Her journey began 18 years ago at her kitchen table. After her young son was diagnosed with autism she struggled to find natural, affordable personal-care products she felt comfortable using on her family, so she began making her own. That personal solution grew into an award-winning South African beauty business offering more than 50 products, as well as a bespoke product-development arm creating ranges for other brands. Du Bois’ latest project is an upcoming collaboration with Klein Contantia using grape-derived ingredients from the winemaking process, the Nedbank spokesperson said. This year’s competition, run by the bank in partnership with Radio 702 and CapeTalk, centred on the theme “My Pain. My Purpose. My Solution”. More than 740 entrepreneurs entered, with Du Bois ultimately selected as the CapeTalk winner, with judges including Tuli Magubane believing her story embodied the theme. The prize includes a R200 000 cash injection, mentorship, national exposure and support through Nedbank's SimplyBiz platform. For Du Bois the recognition is not the culmination of her story; it is yet another chapter on her journey. Naturals Beauty’s future is not focused on putting more products on more shelves but rather

FOR DU BOIS THIS ISN’T THE CULMINATION OF HER STORY, BUT ANOTHER CHAPTER ON HER JOURNEY centred on creating innovative product development and helping other businesses turn their own ideas into something tangible, a statement reads.

Fynbos Area paths being laid RICHARD ROBERTS

WARD COUNCILLOR THANKS RESIDENTS FOR PATIENCE

W

ork on the pathway at Bothasig’s Batavia Street Fynbos Area finally began last week. Ward councillor Miquette Temlett shared the news about the progress being made in this. This first phase of the project will see approximately 400 m of pathway constructed at a width of 1,5 m, covering the majority of the site. Once completed only 190 m will remain for Phase 2, bringing the total pathway length to 590 m, Temlett said. The construction of the laterite pathway is funded through the

ward allocation, she explained. TygerBurger previously reported on the rare fynbos area and future plans. The area is the site where unique fynbos was discovered – including 18 critically endangered species – which are now being protected. A wooden fence has also been installed with sign boards containing information about the area. At a previous council meeting it was discussed that benches would also be installed at some stage.

The park was officially opened in October last year. Temlett said this week the contractor for the pathway had already started with the earthworks, and the E1 kerb stones had been delivered, marking a significant step forward in improving accessibility and enjoyment to this beautiful natural area. Visitors and residents were informed to be aware of the heavy machinery operating on site and were asked to exercise

caution when moving through or around the area. Temlett also thanked the residents and the neighbouring property owners for their patience and understanding. There will be some temporary inconvenience during construction, but the anticipated construction period is only five to six weeks. Judging by the excellent progress already being made, completion may even be sooner than expected, she said. The Friends of Batavia Street Fynbos Area, who conduct regular clean-ups, indicated they were extremely excited and grateful for this progress made.

FROM PAGE 1 There was also an increase in drug-related cases detected through police action, rising from 12 to 21. This reflects police detections and can be influenced by increased enforcement. Despite these challenges, the overall statistics point to a positive movement in several areas, said Borchards. The 37-case reduction in serious community-reported crime, combined with substantial decreases in residential burglary, theft from motor vehicles, attempted murder and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, provides encouraging evidence that continued crime-prevention efforts are having an impact, he added. For the Bothasig precinct community, however, the message remains one of vigilance, rather than complacency, said Borchards. “Residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, report suspicious activity promptly, secure their homes and vehicles, and take additional precautions when travelling or arriving at their homes and businesses. The latest statistics demonstrate that crime patterns can change quickly. While the overall trend for the first quarter is positive, the increase in robbery and hijacking-related offences means that continued community involvement and strong partnerships with the police remain essential. A safer Bothasig precinct depends not only on policing, but on an active and vigilant community working together,” said Borchards.

Edgemead learner going on Arm kind word academic tour to the US polisiekommisaris RICHARD ROBERTS

RICHARD.ROBERTS@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

RICHARD ROBERTS

D

RICHARD.ROBERTS@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

Die boek is getiteld A Life that Refused to Bow. Max is in Soutkuil naby Klipdale gebore.

Lennit Max by die boekbekendstelling.

A learner at Edgemead High School has been invited to go on an academic tour to the USA next year, an experience that will see him visit several leading universities. To get him there, though, Liam Solomons’ family was working hard at raising funds and even started a Back-A-Buddy campaign, to aid them. Last year TygerBurger reported on the avid footballer, after he had travelled to Texas, USA, where he competed in the 2025 Dallas Cup. Liam represented Table View Football Club in the u-15 division during the tournament. Now his father, William, said he was packing his bags for another trip to the US, this time to take part in the 12th Annual STADIO Academic Achievers Tour in 2027. It will also take in visits and lectures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia University, his father said. “Liam is currently a Grade 10 learner at Edgemead High School and is the top achiever in his grade in mathematics, physical sciences and engineering graphics and design, hence the invitation to take part in this academic tour. “This is an incredible academic opportunity for him, but as a family we are seeking sponsorship to help make the tour possible. We are hoping to find individuals or businesses who would be willing to invest in Liam and support his academic journey.” The Academic Achievers Tour takes place during the September and October 2027 school holidays. THINKING OUT LOUD

SLICE OF LIFE

A new season can be the perfect time for a personal reset Today, Spring day, is the start of days become longer as we enter the final stretch of the year. For many of us, it is a reminder that another year is moving in quickly and that perhaps some of the things we promised ourselves in January have not happened. But perhaps September is a better time to take stock than January ever was. We often treat the beginning of a new year as our only opportunity to change. We make resolutions, set goals and convince ourselves that we will become different versions of ourselves from 1 January. Yet life does not wait for January. Life changes in the middle of the year, in the middle of a career and sometimes in the middle of plans we were certain would work out. A job disappears. An application is rejected. A relationship ends. Money becomes tight. A business fails. A qualification takes us somewhere we did not expect to go. We discover that the career we worked so hard to build no longer makes us happy. Sometimes the uncertainty is external. Sometimes it is internal. You simply wake up one day and realise that the person you have become is no longer comfortable with the life you are living. That is where reinvention comes in. Reinventing yourself does not necessarily mean throwing your entire life away and starting from scratch. Sometimes it means repositioning yourself. It means asking: Where am I now? Where do I want to go? What do I need to change to get there? The qualification that once seemed like the key

.. ..

LIFE DOES NOT WAIT FOR JANUARY to a particular career may no longer be enough. But experience matters. So does adaptability. Perhaps you do not need to start over. Perhaps you need to present yourself differently. Update your CV. Learn the skill you have been putting off. Build a portfolio. Apply for the position you keep telling yourself you are not qualified for. Speak to someone working in the field you want to enter. Take the course. Start the side project. Position yourself for the opportunity before it arrives. Too often, we wait until we are forced or desperately need change before preparing for it. There is also something else that holds many of us back: age. We have created timelines for our lives as though everyone receives the same instruction manual. By 25, you should know what you want. By 30, you should have a successful career. By 35, you should own a home. By 40, you should have everything figured out. But I've lived long enough to see life does not work that way. Some people find their calling at 22. Others at 42. Some build successful careers and later realise they want something completely different. Others have to start again because circumstances leave them with no choice. There is no expiry date on ambition. We should also be honest about what reinvention can do. It cannot protect us from uncertainty. You can make sensible plans and still lose your job. You can work hard and still be overlooked. You can prepare carefully and still have life disrupt your plans. Reinvention is not pretending that these things do not hurt. It is refusing to believe that a setback has to become your identity. Perhaps that is what makes a new season such a useful metaphor. Spring does not ask whether winter was successful. It simply arrives. We should give ourselves the same permission. If the career you chose no longer fits, you can reconsider it. If your goals have changed, you can change them. If the version of yourself you created years ago no longer reflects who you are, you can let it go. You do not need to have the next five years figured out. You need to know what you are willing to do next. So perhaps the question is not whether you have achieved everything you wanted this year. Perhaps it is: Are you positioning yourself for the life you want next? There are still months left in the year. More importantly, there is still time. Life will continue to change whether we are ready for it or not. We may not be able to control what comes next, but we can decide whether we remain stuck in what no longer serves us. Sometimes reinvention is not about becoming someone new. It is about becoming ready for who you are still capable of becoming. And there is no better time to begin than now. — NAMHLA MONAKALI

BRIEWE | LETTERS

When did our roads become a battleground? There is something deeply troubling about the way some motorists treat pedestrians and cyclists, as though owning a vehicle automatically gives them ownership of the road. I was reminded of this recently while jogging. At an intersection, I proceeded without seeing an approaching vehicle. Suddenly, a motorist came speeding towards me. By the time I was in the middle of the intersection, the driver’s irritation was unmistakable. For a moment, it felt as though my presence on the road was an inconvenience that did not deserve consideration. I was fortunate. Someone else may not be. We need to talk about our road culture. Our municipal spaces are increasingly designed for shared use. Roads are not private property belonging to motorists. They are public spaces used by pedestri-

ans, cyclists, runners, public transport users and motorists. Yet some drivers behave as though pedestrians are trespassers who must immediately surrender every inch of asphalt. That attitude is dangerous. A motor vehicle can kill in seconds. A pedestrian has little more than their body between themselves and that machine. With such an imbalance, drivers should exercise more caution, not more impatience. Yes, pedestrians and cyclists have responsibilities. We must remain alert, obey the rules and exercise good judgement. But road safety cannot become a competition to establish who is “more entitled” to be there. A few seconds saved are never worth a life lost. To motorists, my message is simple: slow down. Look again. Give pedestrians space. Approach intersec-

tions with caution. And, above all, remember that the person in your path is a human being, not an obstacle delaying your journey. We cannot continue building a road culture based on intimidation, impatience and the dangerous assumption that the strongest road user has the greatest right. That is not road safety. It is survival of the fittest. Surely, in a society that claims to value human life, we can demand better. The next time you become irritated because a pedestrian is crossing, a cyclist is ahead of you or a runner is sharing the road, take your foot off the accelerator and take a breath. You may lose a few seconds. But you could save a life. FEZEKILE COTANI, Kuils River

response is A practical solution for Cape Static disingenuous Town’s homelessness crisis I read with great interest Kaylynne Bantom’s article, “People on the streets are also human”, published on 26 August. I agree wholeheartedly, but I believe we must take the conversation further. Having spent most of my working life in education, I have seen thousands of people develop the knowledge and skills necessary to earn a living and support their families. We did not judge them by background, ability or circumstance. We saw human beings with potential. So why can we not apply the same principle to homelessness? I propose that the City consider a comprehensive homelessness recovery and skills programme. People living on the streets should be offered safe accommodation and a genuine pathway back into society. The process could be straightforward. Treat every person with respect and compassion, while assessing their individual circumstances, abilities and needs. Provide safe accommodation, three nutritious meals a day, clothing, healthcare and appropriate assistance with addiction, mental-health or other challenges. Understand each person’s story and identify their existing abilities and potential. Provide practical, employment-focused training like construction, plumbing, electrical work, welding, carpentry, gardening, hospitality, recycling, cleaning, road maintenance and digital skills, for example. Then create opportunities for supervised, meaningful employment, followed by transitional accommodation and ultimately independent living. The City should partner with businesses, industry,

NGOs and vocational and higher-education institutions. Training should not simply produce certificates. It should produce employable people. Recent public debate, including views expressed during the Parliamentary Commission of Enquiry, in particular Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkwanazi, has raised important questions about unemployment, government procurement and the potential for unemployed people to contribute to public infrastructure projects. Dr Pieter Groenewald has similarly argued for prisoners to acquire skills and contribute productively to society. People need more than food and shelter. They need purpose, responsibility, skills and the opportunity to earn. However, we must also be honest about the rights of the wider community. Is it reasonable for taxpayers to accept people living indefinitely under bridges while fires damage infrastructure, public spaces become makeshift toilets and the environment suffers? Neither is simply removing people without providing a viable alternative. Relocation without rehabilitation merely moves the problem. We already spend significant public resources managing the consequences of homelessness. Why not invest more strategically in addressing its causes? Success should not be measured by how many people disappear from our streets, but by how many are housed, trained, employed and ultimately able to live independently. Let us show South Africa that it can be done. BEN GROENEWALD, Plattekloof

Reading the response in last week’s edition from JP Smith about taxi monitoring is disingenuous. He mentions that traffic officials cannot remain static. This is an absolute lie, because they are deploying traffic officials to remain static with speed cameras in residential areas that I’ve never seen them in before. An example is the mobile camera in Uitzicht at the bottom of a downhill last week. They are looking for easy targets and income instead of taking on the difficult task of confronting taxi drivers. Scouts smash meal-packing target

M

ore than 60 Scouts, leaders, parents and supporters came together at 1st Table View Scouts on Wednesday 26 August, packing 10 152 nutritious meals in just one hour and 15 minutes. The Rise Against Hunger Community Meal Packing Event brought together volunteers from four Scout groups in the Scouts South Africa Table Bay District — 1st Blaauwberg, 1st Bothasig, 1st Milnerton and host group 1st Table View.

TARGET SMASHED The teams worked in a coordinated production line, measuring ingredients, sealing meal packs, labelling them and preparing boxes for distribution through Rise Against Hunger Africa. The original target was 9 000 meals, but volunteers exceeded it by 1 152 meals. Based on the final total, the meals are enough to feed 44 children every school day for an entire academic year. The meals will be distributed to children in underserved communities through Rise Against Hunger Africa. PUTTING SERVICE INTO ACTION For the Scouts, the evening was about more than reaching a number. It provided an opportunity for young people to

SCOUT GROUPS UNITE FOR RISE AGAINST HUNGER EVENT experience how teamwork and community service can make a tangible difference. Yolandé Young, assistant troop scouter at 1st Table View Scouts and event organiser, said she was proud of what the volunteers achieved. “Scouting teaches young people to help other people at all times. This event allowed our Scouts to turn that promise into action,” she said. “Seeing four Scout Groups unite in support of children they may never meet was a powerful reminder of what Scouting is all about.” Young also thanked Gavin, Andile and Tasneem from Rise Against Hunger Africa for helping make the initiative possible. She said every meal packed represented hope and an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child. The event demonstrated how young people and communities can work together to achieve a shared goal, with every meal pack contributing to efforts to address hunger. The Rise Against Hunger event saw more than 60 volunteers work together to prepare thousands of nutritious meals for underserved communities.

WEN DIE 56STE SAREL BURGER-SEWESREEKS VIR DIE DERDE KEER IN SOVEEL JAAR

Milnerton kraai koning RICHARD ROBERTS

D

RICHARD.ROBERTS@NOVUSMEDIA.CO.ZA

Truter sê vanjaar se wedstryde is almal in ‘n goeie gees gespeel.
