This is not the first time the Table View and Milnerton areas have been hit hard by flooding Over the past few years residents have reported repeated issues with water pooling along key routes such as Blaauwberg Road, Gie Road and parts of Koeberg Road during winter rains In 2022 and 2023 flash floods in the same neighbourhoods resulted in several properties being damaged and traffic brought to a standstill for hours
“These areas are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to canals, low-lying topography and the sheer density of urban run-off,” a local community representative pointed out
Efforts have been made in recent years to improve stormwater infrastructure, but high-intensity rains continue to test the system’s capacity Lisa van Rooyen, Table View resident, said: “Water started coming through our garage around 04:00 and within an hour the entire ground floor was soaked This is the third winter in a row we’ve had to lift furniture off the floor It’s exhausting!”
Trevor Michaels, a Milnerton Ridge homeowner, said: “Our street turned into a river overnight The stormwater drains were completely overwhelmed I had to use buckets to stop water from getting into the lounge ”
Priya Naidoo, a small-business owner in Table View, related: “I run a boutique in Blaauwberg Road and the water came in under the door Stock was damaged and we had to close for two days to dry out and clean up ” Mark Jacobs, who lives near Milnerton

The City urged vigilance and reporting Quintas emphasised that while flooding may appear sudden most incidents resolve relatively quickly once the rain subsides “Flooding of roads usually subsides within less than an hour after the rain has stopped, and our stormwater infrastructure has had the opportunity to deal with the large volumes of water ”

Various neighbourhood watch groups expressed their gratitude last week when they took receipt of much needed security equipment donated to them by the local Ward councillor
The equipment was handed over by Miquette Temlett, councillor for Ward 5, to volunteers from the Bothasig, Zone 4, Edgemead and Richwood Neighbourhood Watch groups
The equipment include five cellphones per group, two-way radios, high-visibility gear, torches, first-aid kits, and other tools to enhance communication, visibility and patrol effectiveness
The donation is part of the ward allocation budget and amounts to R200 000 Temlett says the equipment is aimed at bolstering community led crime prevention
“I cannot overstate my appreciation for the tireless work these volunteers do to keep our streets safe They patrol in the dead of night, in all conditions, without payment or recognition
“This equipment is a small way for the City and I to say we see you, we value you, and we will support you,” says Temlett
The addition of cellphones is expected to significantly improve internal communication and emergency responsiveness, says Temlett
“This is more than an equipment handover, it is an investment in the selfless work of those who protect our communities day and night Our ward is safer because of them, and they deserve our full support,” says Temlett
The neighbourhood watch groups expressed their gratitude
Graham Butler, chair of the Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch, is one of those who expressed his gratitude saying that as an organisation they are incredibly thankful to the City and their Ward councillor for making provisions within the ward budget, to assist them in their fight against crime
"Due to the nature of neighbourhood watches and what is required to effectively place a patroller 'on the road', we have very limited resources to achieving this Neighbourhood watches hold various fundraisers to mitigate these costs in order to assist our patrollers in their patrol requirements These gifts will greatly assist our members in staying warm and visible while out on patrol," he says Butler says the devices will greatly assist in maintaining the communications between patrollers while out on the road
"As our neighbourhood watches grow in members and patrollers, so does our need for new equipment, which is why this gesture is so beneficial We currently run at a minimum cost of R2 000 per new active patroller we put out onto the road; this only covers the basics of communication, personal identification, vehicular identification as well as a highvisibility vest, bearing in mind that there are replacement costs involved in these products too, as some of the older products reach end of life," Butler explains
The Richwood Neighbourhood Watch was also one of the groups who benefitted "As the chair, we are really appreciative of the equipment handed over from our ward councillor We are a very small
community with hardly any businesses who support us, so getting the equipment was a true blessing in disguise The equipment will really assist us in doing our voluntary service to the maximum Our community will also benefit from having a neighbourhood watch that is equipped to render a decent service
"I hope all Ward councillors will do the same for their respective accredited neighbourhood watch groups, as they all need the full support from their councillors," says RNW chair, Glenn Marais
Steve Maritz, chair of the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch, also extended their heartfelt thanks to the councillor and City for the generous investment of R200
000 into the "safety and effectiveness" of Ward 5's neighbourhood watches He says the organisations received essential tools that will directly enhance their visibility, communication and responsiveness while patrolling the streets
"This donation is more than just equipment, it is a recognition of the selfless hours our volunteers dedicate, rain or shine, to helping keep our community safe Year to date the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch has patrolled for approximately 9 000 hours, and this equipment will assist us tremendously Thank you for supporting us, and walking this journey with us Together, we are stronger, and our community is safer," says Maritz

Cape Town’s Metro Police are reminding parents and children to prioritise safety – both at home and when out and about –this school holiday “Based on the principles of community policing,” said metro police spokesperson Ruth Solomons, “the department continues to engage in social responsibility initiatives aimed at empowering children and raising awareness about their rights and how to protect themselves ” Here are some practical safety tips the metro police are sharing to help keep children safe during the holidays:
TIPSFORCHILDREN
. Always tell your parents or a trusted adult where you’re going and who you'll be with
. Walk in a group to and from school or other outings
. Say no and run if a stranger offers you a lift or tries to follow you
. Avoid going anywhere with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable
. Don’t go to the shop alone or wander off without telling an adult
. If someone follows you on foot or by car, change direction, run, and find help
. Memorise your full name, your parents’ names, your home address and phone number
. Always share if something or someone makes you feel scared, sad or uncomfortable
. Understand the difference between a good secret (such
HOW CHILDREN CAN ENSURE THEY STAY SAFE THESE HOLIDAYS
as a surprise party) and a bad secret that makes you uneasy
. Use the buddy system, never walk or play alone
. If in danger scream “No!”, run and tell a safe adult what happened
. Stay at least three armlengths away from strangers and their cars If grabbed, fight back, kick, scream, bite, anything to break free and get attention
. Keep doors and windows locked when home alone
. Never open the door unless your parents have told you someone is coming
. Don’t tell strangers on the phone that you’re alone Say your parent is busy and offer to take a message
TIPSFORPARENTS
. Make sure your child knows their full name, age, address, and contact number
. Teach them how to reach you, another relative, or the police in an emergency
. When they’re home alone, advise them to never reveal they’re alone, whether in person or on the phone
. Teach them to avoid conversations with strangers at the door and to inform visitors to come back later
. Remind them to hang up immediately on suspicious phone calls “Our goal is to help children understand how to stay safe ” said Solomons

While winter in Cape Town often brings gloomy skies and chilly days, the City’s library and recreation and parks departments are turning the season into one of learning, laughter and lively activity through their annual winter school holiday programme
“This holiday is often not seen as fun, because it tends to be cold and wet Our departments have it covered and many of the programmes are indoors In addition, there are hundreds of activities guaranteed to chase the winter blues away,” said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Francine Higham
Across the metro, libraries and recreational facilities are rolling out a jam-packed line-up designed to keep children mentally and physically active all in a safe and stimulating environment
"The City’s libraries will once again be transformed into hubs of creativity and curiosity Alongside indoor board-game corners, chess tournaments and colourful arts and crafts stations, this year brings fresh, hands-on experiences to the mix Young minds can learn to draw anime with local illustrators, explore basic coding by building simple games, and get up close with dazzling experiments in pop-up science labs hosted by the Mobile Science Centre Storytelling sessions also double as awareness talks, offering life lessons in a fun,
imaginative format," says Higham Meanwhile, the City’s recreation and parks department will host hundreds of activities aimed at helping children develop vital social skills From gaming tournaments and dance-offs to sports and teamwork challenges, the goal is to encourage leadership, communication and problemsolving in a dynamic, engaging way
“The programmes also provide a safe space for children to participate in social activities and enhance their cultural awareness,” added Higham “It’s more than just keeping children busy our staff put a lot of time and effort into the holiday calendar I want to encourage parents and guardians to send their children, as it’s an opportunity to help them continue learning in a fun way ”
Each library and recreational facility offers its own tailor-made schedule One such example is Goodwood Library, which has pulled out all the stops to host an exciting programme for local youngsters from 10:00 to 12:30 on selected days throughout the holidays Goodwood LIBRARYHOLIDAYPROGRAMME: .30 June – Games; . 2 July – Arts and Crafts; . 4 July – Chess Tournament; . 7 July – Games; . 9 July – Entrepreneur's Day; . 11 July – K9 Dog Show; . 14 July – Games; . 16 July – Arts and Crafts; . 18 July – Coding Tournament For more information, contact Goodwood Library on 021 444 7330 or 064 548 6532, or visit their Facebook page . With winter upon us, the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation directorate is urging residents to help prevent sewer overflows by reporting missing or damaged manhole covers These covers are a vital part of the sewer infrastructure and help keep the system functioning properly
Stolen or broken manhole covers put both infrastructure and public safety at risk Open drains allow rainwater to enter the sewer system, especially during heavy rains, and contribute to overflows
Rain water should flow into the stormwater network, not the sewer system Illegal stormwaterto-sewer connections and the dumping of foreign objects into the sewer network further worsen the problem by blocking pipes
The result is overflowing sewers, damaged infrastructure such as pump stations and sewer collapses
Open manholes also pose a serious safety hazard for motorists and pedestrians, particularly when filled with rainwater, and are not easily visible
Each year, the City spends millions of rand to replace missing manhole covers across the metro A pilot project testing lockable manhole covers has been implemented to determine if stronger locking mechanisms can reduce theft and vandalism
"The Directorate has spent about R2,4 million on replacing 2
824 sewer drain manhole covers across Cape Town between July 2024 and May 2025 This figure has decreased compared to the 4 468 manhole covers reported missing or stolen in the 2023-'24 financial year
"This is a preventable issue that requires everyone’s help By reporting missing or damaged covers, residents can help us protect our sewer infrastructure and prevent costly and dangerous overflows," said the City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien
HOWRESIDENTSCANHELP
Do not remove or tamper with sewer drain covers
Only authorised City staff may
open drains for maintenance work
If you see a missing or broken cover, report it immediately via the City’s official service channels
Residents are encouraged to report incidences of theft and vandalism to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700 or by dialling 107 from a landline
If your confidential information leads to a successful arrest or recovery of City property, you may be eligible for a reward of up to R5 000 .

My vrou haal 'n stukkie "lilac"lappie uit haar handsak "Do you have this colour material?" vra sy "Of cause we have madam," antwoord hy "And how long will it take for the suite to be finished if we decide on you as the tailor?" vra my vrou "About 13 to 14 days, madam," antwoord hy Ek hou die hele petalje dop, want soos ek nou al deur hierdie hele proses geleer het, die "punchline" lê gewoonlik in die prys
"Ok thank you And what will it cost to make the suite for my son?" vra my vrou
"For you, only R5500," sê die ordentlike mannetjie
..GEEOUERSDIESELFDE HOEVEELHEIDAANDAG AANDIELEERDERSSE SKOOLWERKASWATHULLE RONDSKARRELOMSEKER TEMAAKASPOESTERTJIE SKITTERBYDIEBAL?
The City of Cape Town's appeal to residents to report potholes arrived as the winter rains set in, so Goodwoods' horrific state of roads worsened
Admittedly a small number of minor potholes were fixed - in a host of variations, but worse followed
The City embarked on angle grinding large areas around potholes, then disting out all the tar, etc within the cut area Depths ranged from 19 to 37 cm No cones were placed around the area, so motorists’ fate was sealed
However, in Vasco at an extremely busy
four-way stop, an area (1 7M x 1 2m) at one stop street has resulted in the gravel degenerating into two holes about 7mm deep
Motorists use the one half of the road to avoid the holes From all four sides! This has been ongoing for over a month These cut-out areas have continued, the latest in Murray Street, until 23 Junenotwithstanding the danger it poses like all others but damage to vehicles Winter madness, replica of township streets, or just residents' lot?

Home Affairs Tygervalley Mall - I was so pleased to see the announcement for this government department to be located in a safe environment, close to where I live Unfortunately it is very disappointing Firstly, you can only apply for a passport online The form keeps hanging so you cancel it
and retry Still no details are displayed but it says it has been submitted Then you try to book an appointment There are no slots available, and the advice given is ‘‘get up at midnight and try then’’ They do not entertain walk-ins even though it is not busy Completely pointless
SANDRA KUZMA, Online submission
It seems like people are resting on their laurels because the crime stats says that Strandfontein precinct does not have a crime problem but word on the street is different to the stats I have had several of my neighbours tell me that they have been mugged or robbed one even at gunpoint, so are the stats accurate?
Even if they are, this is actually besides the point since the muggings, robberies and burglaries are a reality for Villagers
My friend lives in Rondebosch and she was surprised to hear that Strandfontein does not have more neighbourhood watches
She said that where she lives, the
private security companies and neighbourhood watches work together
This should be a reality in our area too
I pay a fortune of private security and I frequently see some of their vans parking along Spine Road so why can they not patrol more and be another set of eyes and ears for the community like the residents in other more affluent areas have challenged them to do
There is so many vagabonds loitering around Strandfontein
Surely they report what they see to the narcotic forces in the area Why can't the forces for good do the same?
VIOLET, Strandfontein

Alocal Edgemead football star recently returned from the United States of America where he competed in the 2025 Dallas Cup in Texas
Liam Solomons, a learner at Edgemead High School, represented Table View Football Club in the u-15 division during the tournament.
TygerBurger wrote about the young football player earlier this year, before the USA trip
Then, proud father William explained, his boy had been passionate about soccer from the age of 4, starting out by attending skills academies At age 9 years he began playing club soccer at Edgemead Football Club (FC), where he developed his skills and love for the sport, and after some time he played for several clubs before returning to Edgemead FC, where he continued to grow and excel
William said his son had a great experience in the USA
“The first week the boys were hosted by a soccer school in Austin, where they had access to amazing facilities – fields, gym, spa, recovery rooms, everything they needed They played three warm-up games, won two and drew one
“They then headed back to Dallas for the tournament, where they stayed with their home-stay families for the rest of the trip That part was a big highlight for Liam; he really connected with the family and made some awesome
