Brackenfell has taken a major step forward in community safety with the recent certification of its first group of trained Community in Blue (CIB) members.
These 20 volunteers were officially recognised during a general meeting of the Brackenfell Community Police Forum (CPF), marking a milestone in the area's crime prevention efforts
NATIONWIDECONCEPT
Community in Blue is a police initiative launched in 2023 to formalise the role of community volunteers who support local policing efforts
Its a nationwide concept that helps build a better partnership between communities and the police
"It empowers community members, particularly, but not limited to those involved in neighbourhood watches, to actively assist the police in crime prevention, visibility, and intelligencesharing to reinforce community safety structures and to build trust between the public and police," explains CPF chair Norman Landry
In Brackenfell, the Community in Blue initiative officially launched in 2023 as part of a broader effort by the Brackenfell CPF and Brackenfell police to promote neighbourhood involvement in policing
"This launch marked a proactive shift in local safety efforts, integrating trained volunteers into a more formalised support structure under the guidance of the police,"says Landry
"These members are drawn from a range of backgrounds, including active neighbourhood watch members and concerned residents
“Importantly, any community member can join the Community in Blue, you do not need to be part of a neighbourhood watch

Researchers from Stellenbosch University (SU) found first evidence of rare phenolic compounds in cannabis leaves
These are sought after in the pharmaceutical industry for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties
The SU analytical chemists have provided the first evidence of a rare class of phenolics, called flavoalkaloids, in cannabis leaves
Phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, are wellknown and sought after in the pharmaceutical industry because of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties
The researchers identified 79 phenolic compounds in three strains of cannabis grown commercially in South Africa, of which 25 were reported for the first time Sixteen of these were tentatively identified as flavoalkaloids which, interestingly, were found mainly in the leaves of only one of
the strains The results were published in the Journal of Chromatography A recently CHALLENGES
Dr Magriet Muller, an analytical chemist in the LC-MS laboratory of the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) at Stellenbosch University and first author of the paper, said the analysis of plant phenolics is challenging due to their low concentration and extreme structural diversity
“Most plants contain highly complex mixtures of phenolic compounds,” she explained, "and while flavonoids occur widely in the plant kingdom the flavoalkaloids are very rare in nature
“We know that cannabis is extremely complex It contains more than 750 metabolites, but we did not expect such a high variation in phenolic profiles among only three strains, nor to detect so many compounds for the first time in the species ”
For her postgraduate
studies in SU’s Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science Muller developed powerful analytical methods combining comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography and highresolution mass spectrometry for the detailed characterisation of phenolic compounds
“We were looking for a new application for the methods that I developed, after successfully testing them on rooibos tea, grapes and wine I then decided to apply the methods to cannabis because I knew it was a complex sample, and that cannabis phenolics have not been well characterised "

Over 1 800 sewer blockages were cleared in just one year in Wallacedene and Bloekombos alone, a stark reminder of the continued abuse of Cape Town's sewer infrastructure, according to Mayco member for water and sanitation Zahid Badroodien
During the 2024-'25 financial year, the City’s water and sanitation maintenance teams responded to 1 270 blockages in Wallacedene and 546 in Bloekombos A staggering number of these incidents were caused by foreign objects deliberately dumped into the sewer network turning underground pipelines into dumping grounds for solid waste
In Bloekombos, 176 cases were directly linked to such misuse, while Wallacedene saw an even higher proportion, with 459 blockages attributed to foreign materials
“The primary challenge is the continued misuse and abuse of the sewer network,” says Badroodien “Our teams repeatedly find rags, rubble, nappies, tyres, bins and other solid waste obstructing the pipelines
These items should never enter the sewer system "
He says the reality is a frustrating cycle for City workers who unblock one pipeline, only to be called back days later to address another, often in the same area
Badroodien emphasised that breaking this cycle requires active community participation, not just engineering fixes
“To sustainably reduce sewer overflows, repairs must remain intact and the network used responsibly,” he said “Pipes and manholes must be kept clear so sewage can flow to pump stations and wastewater treatment plants without obstruction,” he says pointing out that such blockages pose serious health and , yp g

Classical music lovers are in for a treat as the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) unveils a vibrant new season of four Spring Symphony concerts at the Cape Town City Hall. When goodbye comes too soon
It is a strange, almost unreal feeling to watch someone you love endure a grief so deep it seems to swallow them whole Two weeks ago, I watched my fiancé lose his mother, and I felt a pain unlike any I have ever known
It was not my mother, not my family, yet the weight of it pressed on me, leaving a hollowness I had never experienced before I wanted to reach out, to say the perfect words, to somehow ease the ache, but grief is not something that can be fixed with words And sympathy, however heartfelt, sometimes feels hollow when the loss is not your own I have been blessed to still have both my parents I have hugged them, laughed with them, shared the ordinary chaos of everyday life, and perhaps taken it all for granted Watching my fiancé navigate a world without his mother was a sudden, jarring reminder of how fragile life truly is Death does not send warnings, it does not schedule its arrivals at convenient times It comes uninvited, and the void it leaves is vast and echoing
Over the past week, I saw a man strong, capable, and loving confront the unimaginable: the absence of the one person who has been a constant presence in his life since birth His grief was raw and unfiltered, spilling into every corner of the room and touching everyone near him I wanted to comfort him, to hold him, to take away the sorrow, but I could only be there, quiet, present, a steady hand and listening heart
The pain was multiplied when I had to explain to our three-year-old that his “Ma” had gone to heaven The innocence of a child makes grief even more poignant His small face scrunched with confusion and disbelief “No,” he said repeatedly, “she went to work and will be back ”

Authorities urge caution as bird flu hits seabirds

Since early July, a new outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in wild seabirds across the Western Cape
These are the first wild–bird detections in the province since April 2024 The public is therefore encouraged not to touch sick or dead birds and to report them to the authorities
Wild seabirds infected with HPAI often develop neurological signs such as tremors, head twitches and seizures
Although HPAI occasionally infects mammals and humans, the risk to the public remains very low when basic precautions are followed
WHATISHPAI?
"High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, is a viral disease that causes rapid, severe illness in birds The type of HPAI affecting seabirds in South Africa is officially known as H5N1 clade 2 3 4 4b," the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) says
Asked which birds have been affected, Sanccob says at the beginning of August, most of the affected wild birds were Hartlaub’s gulls "Cases have also been reported in Great White Pelicans, Grey-headed Gulls, Kelp gulls, Whitebreasted cormorants, Crowned Cormorants and Sacred Ibises Domestic chickens and ducks have also been affected " Sanccob says they have played a leading role in response to this crisis
"Our priorities are: keeping our seabird hospitals safe from infection, supporting conservation authorities with wild responder efforts, monitoring the impact on wild birds, and ensuring good animal welfare
“Our actions include surveillance, working with State Veterinary Services and conservation authorities to monitor and manage the disease, advising on response procedures, educating rehabilitation centres, veterinarians, and first responders, and arranging humane euthanasia for birds showing clinical signs "

Observe from a safe distance and record the following:
. The exact location (GPS coordinates are best, or an exact street address You can record the exact location on a smartphone mapping app, WhatsApp location pins work well);
. The date and time;
. Species (if you can identify it), clinical
signs (tremors, unusual tameness, cloudy eyes), the number of birds affected;
. Take a video and photograph of the bird;

. Keep domestic poultry and pet birds away from wild birds
. Seek medical advice if you develop flulike symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat)
within 10 days of contact with a sick or dead bird, and inform your healthcare provider about possible HPAI exposure

. Remove any droppings (guano) or other bodily fluids from the affected bird using a disposable paper towel
. Disinfect your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser
. Disposable items that were in contact with the bird can be packaged in a plastic bag and sent with the bird for safe disposal when collected
. Surfaces should be cleaned with soap and water, then disinfected with a diluted household bleach solution (120ml of bleach per litre of water, 30ml per cup of water) Wash and disinfect your hands again after cleaning
. Change your clothes and wash your hair before making any contact with domestic birds
. Any clothing exposed to a potentially affected bird should be washed normally and dried in the sun or in a tumble-dryer
