cently welcomed a new Hino 35-seater school bus which will help provide more transport access for disadvantaged learners.
The bus, which was valued at R1,5 million, was donated to Christel House South Africa courtesy of the South African Muslim Council Trust (SAMCT) on Thursday April 24

TRANSPORTISCRUCIAL
At the bus launch, SAMCT trustee Faried Boltman said transport is one of the cornerstones of providing education
"We believe children need to be in school and transport plays a key role, which is why we identified the school bus as the appropriate donation

The SAMCT was founded in 2008, the result of a partnership between Old Mutual Unit Trusts and Al Baraka Bank
"We are so grateful for this donation as transport is so important when it comes to providing access to education
Our students face significant challenges getting to school
“Our bus fleet of 17 serves 906 students, transporting them to and from school daily from 29 underserved communities across Cape Town
“However, now we can support another 30 children with the bus when we go on educational excursions and university visits,"
Black said
Christel House also spends R8 million per annum on transport which also facilitates enrichment activities such as workplace exposure trips, and career seminars, according to Black
"We'll now be adding another 300 learners to our current 906 learner population

Two men arrested for armed robberies
Two men, aged 30 and 37, were arrested in connection with series of armed robberies that took place in Woodtsock, Elsies River, Goodwood and Parow, and were due to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court
Their arrest took place following a police chase on Thursday 24 April
According to Anelisiwe Manyana of the provincial commissioner's office at approximately 15:30 officers of the Maitland Flying Squad were conducting routine crime-prevention patrols when they received intelligence regarding a white Hyundai believed to have been used in an armed robbery in Goodwood earlier in the day
They immediately acted on the information and soon spotted the vehicle travelling in Jakes Gerwel Drive On
spotting the approaching police vehicle the Hyundai accelerated to evade capture
A high-speed pursuit ensued, culminating in Station Road, Maitland, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot Both suspects were apprehended by the officers
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered false number plates suspected to have been used in various crimes
Officers also recovered a purse containing stolen bank cards and identity documents
Further investigation linked the suspects to at least seven armed robberies in the above-mentioned areas The two were detained at Goodwood Police Station and were to appear in court on multiple charges related to armed robbery and possession of stolen property

Sheltersurge ownersto sterilisepets
NAMHLAMONAKALI
Thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens are born each year into lives of suffering, often ending up abandoned, neglected, or euthanised in overcrowded shelters across Cape Town
And now animal welfare organisations are calling on the public to take action by prioritising sterilisation to prevent this heartbreaking cycle before it begins
“There are simply too many animals and not enough homes,” said Animal Rescue in a statement
“Sterilisation is the most effective and humane way to reduce overpopulation and prevent suffering before it starts ”
The push for sterilisation is not just about controlling numbers, it also benefits pets directly
The procedure lowers the risk of certain cancers, reduces infections, curbs aggressive behaviour, and can extend a pet’s lifespan
Still, many pet owners delay or avoid sterilisation due to costs or lingering myths about the procedure
STERILISATIONDRIVES
To bridge that gap, several Cape Town-based groups are running free or low-cost sterilisation drives in areas including Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Hout Bay, and Retreat
“There’s no reason a healthy dog or cat should have litter after litter,” the organisation said “Each unplanned pregnancy adds more strain to already
FREE STERILISATION DRIVES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE MITCHELLS PLAIN AREA
overstretched shelters One operation can change a life not just for the pet, but for the animals we won’t have to turn away in the future ”
Pet overpopulation also contributes to wider community issues: rising stray populations, animal cruelty, and even public health concerns Animal welfare groups are urging residents to play their part
“This is not just a shelter problem, it’s a community issue,” the group emphasised
“We all have a role to play in preventing neglect and cruelty before it happens Sterilisation is where it starts ”
Kotja Morbits from Happy Tails in Langa echoed that sentiment, stressing the need for more empathy and education
“It all starts with the pet owner Pet owners should be responsible for getting their pets sterilised There’s no real empathy for the animals, people treat them like objects
“We do education around this because if you first care for the animal, you’ll see their value and treat them better ”
Animal groups are calling on the public to check their own pets' sterilisation status and to spread the word in their communities
“Together, they say, it’s possible to break the cycle and create safer, more compassionate neighbourhoods for people and pets alike

Pet owners complete City survey
Pet owners have only two weeks left to participate in a survey focused on collecting data on Cape Town's pet population that aims to help shape future planning and interventions around animal welfare
In the past four weeks, 13 037 pet owners have completed the City of Cape Town's domestic animal survey which was hosted by AfriPaw The survey seeks to address the following questions: the number of pets, how many were vaccinated, sterilisation status and the type of animal healthcare accessed in times of need AfriPaw Animal Welfare is an NPO that educates low-income communities on their pets' primary needs and facilitates free sterilisations, as well as access to affordable primary healthcare and food and shelter for township pets according to their website
QUALITYOFLIFE
The most recent survey took place in Vrygrond on Saturday April 12 where the City deployed teams of field workers to engage residents directly Six weeks have been set aside for the survey, set to conclude at the end of April
"We're trying very hard to improve the quality of life of everybody in our city If we do not have a healthy animal population, that affects the human population So it's important that we get better data so we can speak to provincial and national government about proper funding for our animal welfare organisations who do great work for all the pet lovers and animal owners across the
city So if you haven't done so already, please get online and help us in this very important cause by completing the survey," said Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith
The survey outcomes will help shape future planning and interventions on animal welfare in Cape Town, and provide an estimate of the domestic animal population Field workers conducting the in-person
surveys will carry identification cards when visiting properties
Residents can contact the City's Customer Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to verify a staff member's credentials, if need be .The survey can be completed online at https://bit ly/4bPScdI .The City has also set up a tollfree number for general queries or concerns about the survey: 0800 212 176, available weekdays between 08:00 and 16:00

AVRILFILLIES
Since his childhood Tyrone Appollis has been painting and romanticising about the poor fisherfolk's struggle along the coasts of the Western Cape for survival
He painted scenes of harbours from Kalk Bay to Gansbaai to showcase the struggles of fisherfolk against draconian quota systems and watching their world-famous sea cottages being taken over by the rich in the name of gentrification
“For years fishermen fished the holy, sweet waters running alongside their world-famous sea cottages on our coasts,” Appollis said, “and in my paintings I have depicted these scenes to show how they were so cruelly moved to other areas to serve rich folk’s taste for gentrification, which saw over their sea cottages taken over ”
He still believes the quota system is terrible, seeing the ongoing struggle of fisherfolk to make ends meet with the quotas allocated to them
ARTISTANDPOET
“Besides painting I also make sketches
and write poems about the working class, the vessels in Kalk Bay and other harbours, which are my happy hunting grounds In my childhood I used to call it my throw-away paintings, drawings and poems, and recently I added songs of Kalk Bay and Gansbaai, although Kalk Bay is the lovely thorn in my little car's front tyres As I always say ‘tank you’, but my little car isn’t ‘tank-full’, which means I score mileage from or to Kalk Bay ”
Appollis resides in Vanguard Estate
He said he entered a few art competitions without any success and, in retrospect, was a good loser
“Not winning competitions served to strengthen my demeanour for greater heights in my work as a painter, poet, singer and songwriter But I take comfort in the fact that some of the world’s most esteemed thinkers, musicians, artists and painters never won a Grammy or Oscar award Vincent van Gogh, Bessie Head, Bob Marley and Steve Biko come to mind, but they are uppermost in my heart as the most enduring of spirits ”
Appollis acknowledged all the South African artists who, through the years, touched his soul indelibly and whom he regards as much-vaunted creations
‘VISWINKELS’
Recently he was challenged by Stefan Hundt, curator of the Sanlam Art Collection in Bellville, to paint “Viswinkels Vannie Kaap”
“Initially I didn’t say a word, but am currently taking up the challenge I’ve written poems on ‘Kalkys fish and crispy cheaps’, but will put brush to paint to make the challenge a reality Local is lekker and when you visit these small harbours you can be sure there will be fish and chips, dried snoek, harders or fresh fish from the sea I’ve painted harbours such as Paternoster, Saldanha, Hermanus, Yzerfontein, Gordon’s Bay and Struisbaai, and this theme hasn’t dried up my pores of awakening ”

Herewith signing out for one last time...
I had a dream of becoming a journalist from Grade 5, when a teacher helped me recognise my gift of the written word And despite much discouragement of having faith in one's own career dreams, I went on to realise them
Once realised, soon enough it became abundantly clear that this was the right choice, making a difference through telling the stories of others
I always say we are often the voiceless soldiers behind the published works, rewarded by a simple byline at the top for our efforts No personal opinions, no guided narratives So on these few occasions we give readers insight into the person who is the subject of our newspaper
For those who may not know me, or my story, my name is Samantha (although I never hear my full name unless I'm in trouble, of course) I had a dream of becoming a journalist at People's Post newspaper, specifically writing for Mitchells Plain, the area I was born and finished my schooling in, and to which I still a have very deep sense of belonging, even though my family moved out of the area at the start of high-school years
I was inspired to make a difference by telling the positive news from the area, amid continuous front-page articles about all the deepest darkest happenings in the area
My dream was largely realised in 2014 as an intern, on the newspaper's Lansdowne edition But slowly God let the full dream unfold, and in time I wrote for the prized edition for Mitchells Plain What was meant to be a six-month internship ended
.. I WAS INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY TELLING THE POSITIVE
NEWS FROM THE AREA
after three months with a full-time offer It was an opportunity to prove myself
Consequently, I believe I personify the saying "If you love what you do you won't work a day in your life "
With more than 50 awards, commendations, finalist nominations and recognitions along the more-than-10year span of my career, and having the privilege of featuring in almost every major journalism competition in the country I never imagined doing anything else And honestly, through all of this I have learnt many valuable lessons
You know, one cannot tell the future; I mean, if you asked me a few years ago where I'd be at this point my answer would probably have been the same as it was then
Tomorrow I will officially close a chapter of my life At 32 I stand at the precipice of major change I once believed it was too late for me to start over I recognise the magnitude of this new career move, an opportunityto make a fresh start, a whole new beginning, which is more than many can do right now In fact, I didn't want to write this column at all, for fear it would be a tad too emotional My colleagues were quite adamant that I write this, my swansong, and how glad I am that I obliged
For the past 10-and-a-half years, People's Post, and later TygerBurger (as the publication name changed), has become such a huge part of my identity, a publication I have passionately advocated for, and it has been such an incredible ride And while it is with a heavy heart that I officially bid farewell to my career as a reporter today I am so immensely grateful for all I have achieved on this most fulfilling of journeys
Thank you for the memories, for the platform, for the opportunity to inform, inspire and entertain you along the way
As I often would say in my videos, "signing out for one more time [although this time final], for People's Post news I am Samantha Lee-Jacobs "
Save our coastline from litter before it’s too late
I took a walk along one of Cape Town’s beautiful beaches this past weekend and was heartbroken by what I saw Plastic bottles, food wrappers, fishing line, and even broken glass littered the sand, marring what should be one of our greatest natural treasures
Cape Town is known worldwide for its stunning coastline, but without urgent action, we risk losing this priceless asset to pollution and neglect While volunteer clean-ups are admirable they are not enough The City needs to implement regular beach maintenance, stricter littering fines, and more public education campaigns about the consequences of pollution
We must also tackle the issue at the source:
improving waste management in nearby communities and encouraging recycling Installing more visible accessible bins along beach entrances could help Beaches are not just playgrounds for tourists; they are crucial ecosystems for marine life and important spaces for local communities If we fail to protect them now, future generations will inherit nothing but polluted shorelines
Saving our coastline must become a shared responsibility between the government, businesses, and all residents It’s time we treat our beaches with the respect they deserve

On Sunday night again cars motorbikes were revving, racing up and down the Goodwood area for hours
The law enforcement call centre had my call on hold for 10 minutes
Even though they are based in Goodwood the operator said she could not hear anything or see anything on the cameras I asked if they have double-paned windows?
The police station is also in the area Are these departments so far removed from the actual lawlessness in our residential areas?

Capeclub rugbyaction heatsup
Rugby supporters of clubs in Super League A are in for a stressful time this season as there are no outright favourites at the moment Durbell are currently the log leaders with 14 points after three matches, and it was obvious on Saturday 26 April against newbie Van der Stel-Evergreens that they are on a mission to topple Hamiltons this year
At half-time Durbell led 19-12 and VDE was still in the game
However, when the second half started VDE could not keep up with the experienced Durbell players who romped to a 52-24 victory
LESSONS
Valuable lessons were learnt by the visitors and the spectators in Durbanville cannot complain about the rugby on display
Other teams cannot afford to write VDE off after this loss and everyone is looking forward to the rest of the season to see how they grow after each match against the big guns In their first match they dispatched St Georges by 40-11 But rugby leagues are not won in May and with the tertiary institutions starting to fulfil their league commitments after the Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield, it will be a seesaw-battle on the log
OTHERMATCHES
Helderberg is second on the log with 12 points followed by Villager (11) and False Bay (7)
In other matches in Super League A Ikeys beat Kuils River by 23-22, Brackenfell beat Maties by 46-35, Villagers overpowered SK-Walmers by 64-26, Helderberg beat Unimil by 50-27 and False Bay were victorius against UWC with a 34-30 win
In Super League B Hamediehs opened their season with a 42-36 win over NTK at Vygieskraal, while Collegians were pipped by Macassar with one point when they lost 31-32 in Athlone Goodwood was too strong for CPUT and were winners by 40-20 Franschhoek beat Primrose 27-20
FIXTURES
The following teams will square off on in Super League A on Saturday 3 May:
. Hamiltons v SK-Walmers
. Brackenfell v Tygerberg
. St George's v UCT
. VDE v Unimil
. False Bay v Maties
. Villager v UWC
