In a personal call for change, local resident Troy Davies, who has been directly impacted by the surge in criminal activity around the N7 highway, is urging the community to demand better safety measures His family recently became

victims of a frightening smashand-grab incident at a major intersection leading off the N7 (Malibongwe Drive), an experience that has pushed him to take action

TygerBurger reported numerous times of recent incidents of smash-and-grab crimes along Malibongwe Drive and the N7 highway, raising concerns among residents and commuters These areas, particularly near Dunoon, have become hotspots for such criminal activities, leading to heightened fears and calls for increased safety measures

In July 2024, a series of brazen

smash-and-grab incidents were captured on drone footage, showing a suspect in a bright orange shirt breaking car windows along Malibongwe Drive and the N7

The footage, shared widely on social media, depicted the suspect approaching vehicles in traffic and smashing windows to steal valuables

This alarming footage prompted local authorities to take action

According to reports, police arrested individuals linked to these incidents following the release of the drone footage

One suspect was apprehended during a routine check at Table View Police Station, and subsequent investigations led to the identification and arrest of two accomplices

“This has been a deeply personal experience for us,” said Davies “We were targeted at one of the key intersections, a place that many people rely on daily It’s not just about my family it’s about the fear that has taken over our entire community ”

He is not alone in his concern

Increasingly, local residents are living in constant fear of daylight robberies and hijackings The problem has escalated to the point where commuters are avoiding key infrastructure, such as the multimillion-rand Malibongwe road structure, once designed to serve the community Now many choose to bypass it for safer routes

Areas such as the N7, Malibongwe, and Potsdam Road intersections have become notorious hot spots for criminal activity What was once seen as a critical access point to and from the city is now viewed with trepidation The result is a frustrating cycle: residents avoid these areas, leading to more traffic congestion in nearby neighbourhoods and a growing sense of insecurity

As highlighted by Davies, one of the contributing factors to the ongoing crime surge is the illegal occupation of land, particularly in the Dunoon community, where criminals have found refuge According to Davies these issues are not

isolated incidents, but have become part of the daily reality for many in the area He emphasises that merely telling people to avoid these routes is not a sustainable solution

“The infrastructure is there, and it’s valuable We cannot just ignore it and let it sit unused,” Davies said “We need real action to address the root causes and make our streets safer again ”

SOLUTION

The solution, according to Davies, lies in ensuring a permanent police presence in these high-risk areas He believes enforcing law and order is the first crucial step in reclaiming the safety of the community, revitalising the area’s infrastructure and curbing the illegal activities that have plagued the region

“The time for change is now,” he added “We need to send a clear message that enough is enough Our infrastructure must be used to its full potential, and our community deserves to feel safe again ” In response to the growing concern, Davies has launched a petition calling for increased policing and greater attention to the ongoing safety issues in these hot spots He urged residents to add their voices in support of reclaiming their community

“Help us reclaim our community, sign your name and let your voice be heard,” said Davies

It aims to gather wide support for permanent-safety measures and put pressure on local authorities for immediate action in these high-risk areas

It is a first step towards a safer and more secure environment for all . Visit www.change.org/p/ implement-permanent-police-presence-atmalibongwe-intersection-on-n7-highway

The City of Cape Town Council has approved the Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) for the Blaauwberg Road Corridor in Table View, marking a major step towards transforming one of the area’s busiest routes into a vibrant urban hub.

The approval, granted at the Council meeting on Thursday 24 April, finalised a plan that will shape the future development of the approximately 5km stretch of Blaauwberg Road, running from Marine Circle in the west to the intersection with Koeberg and Potsdam Roads in the east

“The LSDF addresses challenges created by historic car-centric planning from the 1980s, escalating congestion, infrastructure limitations, and the changing urban landscape,” said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Eddie Andrews

“Our goal is to develop Blaauwberg Road into a thriving urban corridor featuring worldclass destinations, walkable precincts, and high-quality public spaces, fully integrated with the area's natural assets ”

The plan aims to guide development decisions, land use applications, and public investment along the corridor

It was shaped through extensive collaboration with residents, business owners, and interested

groups during a public participation process in 2023, followed by a two-month formal consultation period

BACKGROUNDANDCONTEXT

Originally developed for low-density suburban use, Blaauwberg Road was designed around a car-dominated model, with little consideration for open spaces or the natural environment However, over the past 40 years, the area’s footprint has expanded significantly with the creation of suburbs like Parklands, Dunoon, West Beach, Sandown, Big Bay, and Sunningdale Increased congestion and historic title deed restrictions have limited the corridor’s development potential

The LSDF builds on ideas first presented in the 1998 Blaauwberg Road Growth Management Strategy, which suggested higherdensity, mixed-use development to better utilise the east-west arterial route

It also aligns with the Blaauwberg District Spatial Development Framework (DSDF), adopted by Council in 2023, which prioritises Blaauwberg Road and Marine Drive for mixed land use and enhanced access to coastal recreation areas

KEYSPATIALSTRATEGIES

The LSDF outlines several key strategies for the corridor’s transformation:

. Promoting employment and greater economic diversity

beyond the current retail and service focus

. Improving public access to Marine Circle and the coastline to boost tourism, sport, and recreational opportunities

. Developing the western section between Marine Circle and the R27 into a dynamic mixed-use area, capitalising on its coastal proximity

. Protecting natural assets like Rietvlei and ensuring new development considers infrastructure capacity limits

. Encouraging increased residential densities along the trunk MyCiTi bus route to connect more residents to economic opportunities

. Providing a broader range of housing types to support a more inclusive, integrated city

“We aim to create a resilient corridor that can withstand the effects of climate change including stronger winds, rising sea levels, and storm surges while delivering a vibrant, walkable urban area,” Andrews said “Managing growth responsibly, improving public spaces, and investing in sustainable streetscapes are central to our plan ”

PUBLICINVOLVEMENT

Local residents, business owners, and stakeholders actively participated in the LSDF’s development A third public workshop was held at Table View Primary School in September 2023, providing an opportunity for residents to engage directly with City officials and ask questions

The City is also currently

investing in sanitation infrastructure upgrades to support sustainable development along the corridor and surrounding suburbs

“I want to sincerely thank the community for collaborating with us in refining the LSDF,” Andrews added “Their input has been invaluable in shaping a better, more sustainable future for Blaauwberg Road ”

‘Hedda Gabler’ brings fire and fury to The Baxter this May

Get ready for drama that scorches the stage - Hedda Gabler, the award-winning theatrical sensation, is coming to The Baxter Flipside in both Afrikaans and English.

Directed and translated by Christiaan Olwagen, this bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s iconic play dives headfirst into the chaos of power, passion and destruction. The title role played with electric intensity by Rolanda Marais, is at the heart of a story where feathers, guns, and wilting roses decorate a world ready to unravel

This explosive production first wowed audiences at last year’s Woordfees and went on to nab four kykNET Fiësta Awards, including Best Actress for Marais, Best Ensemble and Best Festival Production.

Hedda Gabler is no polite period piece It’s a shot of

adrenaline to the classic canon. Alongside Marais a top-tier cast - Albert Pretorius, Martelize Kolver, Ashley de Lange, Ludwig Binge and Stian Bam brings the heat in both language runs, with Hedda at the centre, burning everything in her path Having just returned from honeymoon with the wellmeaning but dull Jurg (Pretorius), Hedda is already bored When her old flame Lovborg (Binge) shows up, Hedda aims a wrecking ball at her life

This is not theatre for the faint-hearted. With graphic content and reference to suicide, the production carries a 16+ age restriction.

Catch it at The Baxter - in Afrikaans from 1 to 10 May and in English from 12 to 24 May at 19:30, with Saturday matinees at 15:30 . Tickets are available at Webtickets or Pick n Pay stores

DeGrendelLions Clubdonates Eastereggs

The De Grendel Lions Club had quite a busy time during the run up to Easter weekend Very gratefull club members were able to distribute the gracious donations of Easter eggs received from Edgemead Primary school, The Learning Tree Educare Cape Town in Bothasig, and Edgemead Daycare, to various schools and organisations

They included the Eric Miles Cheshire Home, Parow Primary School, Belhar Primary School Grade R classes, and Bella Vista Pre-Primary School in Ceres

The project culminated on 16 April when Lions Club members visited the Sunshine and ACVV Bothasig Crèche & Nasorg Lions Club president Glenda Hon and fellow club member Jacques Mostert who was dressed up as the Easter bunny, were on site to hand out Easter eggs to the children at the various crèches

“The happiness and joy on the children’s faces when receiving the Easter eggs were

amazing Their initial reaction when seeing the humongous bunny for the first time varied between absolute joy to wary, tears and hugging In the end everyone were friends,” says Mostert

From Bothasig the focus shifted to Tygerberg Hospital where Hon and the bunny visited the hospital’s children’s unit and two oncology wards The resident patients were presented with small goodie bags with Easter eggs containing a handwritten note of support by Edgemead Primary School learners Even in their trying times, the smiles and gratitude for their small gifts made the visit absolutely special, says Mostert

Hon thanked every organisation who had made an Easter egg donation to the Lions Club She mentioned that the smiles of the recipients were worth every effort, and the donations made Easter very special for the recipients this year She had a special word of thanks for Tygerberg Hospital to allow the members to visit them

At the Tygerberg Hospital’s Children’s Unit is Lions Club president Glenda Hon,seen here with Sister Isabel Arendse and the Easter bunny and Lions Club member Jacques Mostert

Herewith signing out for one last time...

I had a dream of becoming a journalist from Grade 5, when a teacher helped me recognise my gift of the written word And despite much discouragement of having faith in one's own career dreams, I went on to realise them

Once realised, soon enough it became abundantly clear that this was the right choice, making a difference through telling the stories of others

I always say we are often the voiceless soldiers behind the published works, rewarded by a simple byline at the top for our efforts No personal opinions, no guided narratives So on these few occasions we give readers insight into the person who is the subject of our newspaper

For those who may not know me, or my story, my name is Samantha (although I never hear my full name unless I'm in trouble, of course) I had a dream of becoming a journalist at People's Post newspaper, specifically writing for Mitchells Plain, the area I was born and finished my schooling in, and to which I still a have very deep sense of belonging, even though my family moved out of the area at the start of high-school years

I was inspired to make a difference by telling the positive news from the area, amid continuous front-page articles about all the deepest darkest happenings in the area

My dream was largely realised in 2014 as an intern, on the newspaper's Lansdowne edition But slowly God let the full dream unfold, and in time I wrote for the prized edition for Mitchells Plain What was meant to be a six-month internship ended

.. I WAS INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY TELLING

THE POSITIVE NEWS FROM THE AREA

after three months with a full-time offer It was an opportunity to prove myself Consequently, I believe I personify the saying "If you love what you do you won't work a day in your life "

With more than 50 awards, commendations, finalist nominations and recognitions along the more-than-10year span of my career, and having the privilege of featuring in almost every major journalism competition in the country I never imagined doing anything else And honestly, through all of this I have learnt many valuable lessons

You know, one cannot tell the future; I mean, if you asked me a few years ago where I'd be at this point my answer would probably have been the same as it was then

Tomorrow I will officially close a chapter of my life At 32 I stand at the precipice of major change I once believed it was too late for me to start over I recognise the magnitude of this new career move, an opportunityto make a fresh start, a whole new beginning, which is more than many can do right now In fact, I didn't want to write this column at all, for fear it would be a tad too emotional My colleagues were quite adamant that I write this, my swansong, and how glad I am that I obliged

For the past 10-and-a-half years, People's Post, and later TygerBurger (as the publication name changed), has become such a huge part of my identity, a publication I have passionately advocated for, and it has been such an incredible ride And while it is with a heavy heart that I officially bid farewell to my career as a reporter today I am so immensely grateful for all I have achieved on this most fulfilling of journeys

Thank you for the memories, for the platform, for the opportunity to inform, inspire and entertain you along the way As I often would say in my videos, "signing out for one more time [although this time final], for People's Post news I am Samantha Lee-Jacobs "

Residents fed up with street racing chaos

On Friday evening I called law enforcement regarding the cars speeding in the Goodwood area

On Sunday night again cars motorbikes were revving, racing up and down the Goodwood area for hours

The law enforcement call centre had my call on hold for 10 minutes

Even though they are based in Goodwood the operator said she could not hear anything or see anything on the cameras I asked if they have double-paned windows?

The police station is also in the area Are these departments so far removed from the actual lawlessness in our residential areas?

I took a walk along one of Cape Town’s beautiful beaches this past weekend and was heartbroken by what I saw Plastic bottles, food wrappers, fishing line, and even broken glass littered the sand, marring what should be one of our greatest natural treasures

Cape Town is known worldwide for its stunning coastline, but without urgent action, we risk losing this priceless asset to pollution and neglect While volunteer clean-ups are admirable they are not enough The City needs to implement regular beach maintenance, stricter littering fines, and more public education campaigns about the consequences of pollution

We must also tackle the issue at the source:

improving waste management in nearby communities and encouraging recycling Installing more visible accessible bins along beach entrances could help Beaches are not just playgrounds for tourists; they are crucial ecosystems for marine life and important spaces for local communities If we fail to protect them now, future generations will inherit nothing but polluted shorelines

Saving our coastline must become a shared responsibility between the government, businesses, and all residents It’s time we treat our beaches with the respect they deserve

Elderlycrushed by tariff hikes

I am writing to express my deep unhappiness with the recent

But now, in my retirement years, I find myself struggling to keep up with the ever-rising costs of basic municipal services The increases linked to property values are simply unaffordable on a fixed pension income The value of my home increased exponentially over the last few years, as was the case for all home owners in Cape Town, forcing me into a bracket where my municipal bill will increase by nearly 20% It feels as though those of us who have spent our lives building this city are now being punished for staying in the homes we worked so hard to pay off There seems to be little consideration for pensioners who, without any means to increase their income, are being squeezed beyond their limits I urge the municipality to review these tariff hikes and consider relief measures for senior citizens Our dignity and ability to live securely in our own homes should not be eroded by the very city we helped shape JO ROBERTS, Brackenfell

Club rugby action heats up

Rugby supporters of clubs in Super League A are in for a stressful time this season as there are no outright favourites at the moment

With three games completed Durbell are currently log leaders with 14 points after three matches, and it was obvious on Saturday 26 April against newbie Van der Stel-Evergreens from Stellenbosch that they are on a mission to topple Hamiltons this year At half-time Durbell led 1912 and VDE was still in the game

However, when the second half started VDE could not keep up with the experienced Durbell players who romped to a 52-24 victory

LESSONS

Valuable lessons were learnt by the visitors and the spectators in Durbanville cannot complain about the rugby on display

Other teams cannot afford to write VDE off after this loss and everyone is looking forward to the rest of the season to see how they grow after each match against the big guns In their first match they dispatched St Georges by 40-11

But rugby leagues are not won in May and with the tertiary institutions starting to fulfil their

league commitments after the Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield, it will be a seesaw-battle on the log

Helderberg is second on the log with 12 points followed by Villager (11) and False Bay (7)

In other matches in Super League A Ikeys beat Kuils River by 23-22, Brackenfell beat Maties by 46-35, Villagers overpowered SK-Walmers by 64-26, Helderberg beat Unimil by 50-27 and False Bay were victorius against UWC with a 34-30 win

In Super League B Hamediehs opened their season with a 42-36 win over NTK at Vygieskraal, while Collegians were pipped by Macassar with one point when they lost 31-32 in Athlone

Goodwood was too strong for CPUT and were winners by 40-20 Franschhoek beat Primrose 27-20

NATHAN RANKED 5TH IN THE WORLD AT WINGSURF CHAMPS

through high-level heats, he faced the event’s previous champion, Malo Guenole, in a dramatic Round 5 match Despite breaking his wing, Nathan s performance secured his spot among the top riders

The judges were looking for commitment, power, and manoeuvres performed in the critical section of the wave

Difficulty, variety, and wave selection were all crucial elements in scoring A new inclusion for this year allowed riders to use the power of the wing when performing air tricks

FIRSTROUNDS

Men’s Rounds 1 and 2 took place in classic Ponta Preta conditions to kick off the event

Some athletes made an immediate impact, including Hawaiian newcomer Marley Franco, local athlete Zany Guy, and young Frenchman Arthur Thebault As the competition

progressed into Round 3, preseeded athletes took to the water, instantly elevating the level of competition to explosive heights Canadian Finn Spencer rode a solid heat, advancing to Round 5 with a 13 70 overall score Malo Guenole, last year’s event winner, also advanced, demonstrating great confidence in this location

The event culminated in a thrilling final, where Cash Berzolla from the USA claimed the 2025 GWA Wingfoil Wave World Title, narrowly defeating Finn Spencer
