Crimestatsrevealalarmingmurderlevels

NELSON Mandela Bay remains one of the country’s worst violent crime hotspots, with several local police stations ranking amongthe highest for murder in the latest SAPS crime statistics.

KwaZakhele recorded59murders —the highest of any police station nationally —while New Brighton, Walmer, KwaNobuhle and Mthatha also featured amongthe top 20.

The figures come as the Eastern Capecontinues to record the highest murder and rape rates in South Africa, despite anational decline in violent crime.

Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, andsenior SAPS leadership released the fourth-quarter crime statistics for the 2025/26 financialyear in Pretoria on Friday, 22 May.

Accordingtothe national breakdown, the Eastern Cape recorded 949murders, downfrom 1,020 in the same period in 2025

However, it still had the highestmurder ratio in the country at 14.3 per 100,000 people, as well as the highest rape ratio at 22.5 per 100,000people.

The province also recorded 1,853 sexual offences, 524 attempted murders, 6,026 assaults with intent tocause grievous bodily harm, and4,046 common

assaults.

Speaking duringthe briefing, Cachalia saidmany murders werelinked to arguments, retaliation, vigilantism, gang violence and alcohol abuse.

Nationally, SAPS recorded 5,181 murders, a9.5% decrease year-on-year, although officials warned that violent crime levels remain “unacceptably high”.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s high murder figures have renewed concernaboutpolicing capacity in the metro, particularly in areas repeatedlyflagged as violent crime hotspots.

Respondingtothe statistics, DA Shadow MECfor Community Safety,Yusuf Cassim, said

the EasternCape urgently needs stronger coordinated intervention, including apermanent 24hour Joint Operations Centre in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“A total of 949 murders were recorded in the province over just three months. While this is down from 1,020 during the same period last year, itstill means that more than ten peoplewere murdered every day in the Eastern Cape,”Cassim said, citing SAPSfigures.

He added that Eastern Cape residents remain “more likely to be murdered or raped than anywhere else in SouthAfrica.”

Cassimsaid he would write to the Eastern Cape Provin-

cial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, and Community SafetyMEC Xolile Nqatha, requesting adetailed intervention plan for high-crime stations, including KwaZakhele, New Brighton, Walmer, KwaNobuhle and Mthatha.

“Eastern Cape residentsneed police stations that can respond when they call, investigatecases properly and prevent violent criminals from returning to the same communities again and again,” he said.

He added that SAPS must strengthen operational capacity in theprovince’s worst-affected areas in order to reduce violent crime and restore public safety.

CARS queuefor awash where police vans once stood parked.

At the corner of acrime-ridden stretchinWalmer Township, water pipes snake through the ruins of what usedtobeanSAPS satellite station.

Men scrubvehicles in the former parking lot, while inside the vandalised shell of the building, blankets, shoes and broken rubble hint at people seeking shelter in the abandoned structure at night.

Finding the old station was not easy. When the PE Express stopped to ask residents for directions, several appearedconfused.

“Are you talking about thecar wash?” one resident asked.

And that is exactly what the former SAPS satelliteoffice hasbecome.

The building —strippedofits windows, roof and sections of its walls —now stands hollow and forgotten in acommunity where residents say crime has spiralled and visible policing has disappeared. Faded signage hangsatthe entrance, while adog wanders freely through what was once amunicipal facility meant to provide safetyand security.

For nearby resident, Nothini Payi (67), theabandonedbuilding represents more than urbandecay it is adaily reminder of fear. “I’m so scared, Iamold at my home, they can easily kick the doorsopen. Idon’t feel safe and can’tsleep at night,”she shared

“We need this police stationreopened because we need people who will protectus.”

During asite visit on 26 May, Democratic Alliance(DA)mayoral candidate, Retief Odendaal, said the closure of the facility in 2017 hadleft amajor policing vacuum in the area.

“Thiswas asatellite police station, and it closed its doorsin2017, and for years we have been fighting to getSAPStoreopen,”Odendaal said.

“Walmer township has many crimeproblems, the community just don’tfeel safe anymore.” He added that the area has become ahotspot for crime.

“This is ametro building, rented by the Department of Public Works for SAPS when they used it.”

According to Odendaal, police withdrew fromthe site after officers stationed there were allegedly robbed.

“The reasonSAPSwithdrew their resources is because the police men and women were robbed, so they said it was notsafe enough,”heshared.

“That is an indictment on SAPS because if it’s not safe enough for police, it is certainlynot safe enough forthe local community.”

In response to questions, police spokesperson Captain André Beetge said the municipal-owned building was vacated after structural concerns were identified.

“The office was located in amunicipally owned building and after water and structural damages, theDepartment of PublicWorksdid an inspectionofthe building. It wasfound not to be fit for use as office space any longer and SAPS wasnotified to vacate the premises,”heshared.

Beetgeadded that thepremises in Fountain Avenue, Walmer, had been used as acontact point and office accommodation for theSAPSWalmer CommunityPolice Forum (CPF).

“The South African PoliceService canconfirm that thepremises in Fountain Avenue, Walmer were

utilised as acontact point as well as office accommodation for theSAPS Walmer CommunityPolice Forum (CPF) and werenot in thetrue sense seen as a‘satellite police station’.”

Whilea large green JoJo tank stood at theentrance of theabandoned building, no pipeswere connected to thewater tank.Instead, taps and pipesattached to thepremises appeared to be supplying water used to wash vehicles.

Questions sent to theNelson Mandela Bay Municipality on whether municipal services at thesite, including water, are stillaccessible to thepublic and remain operational went unanswered. The municipality also didnot respond to questions regarding whowouldberesponsible forthe waterbill if municipal water is being used foracar wash at the premises.

Potholerepairsunderwayasflood-damagedroadsdeteriorate

ROAD repairs are underway across Nelson Mandela Bay following widespread pothole damage caused by recent flooding, with municipal teams and councillorsresponding to growing complaints as water-damaged road surfaces continue to deteriorate.

Ward councillors say the scale of road damage has placed significant pressure on limited repair teams operating across the Metro.

In asocial mediapost, Ward 9 councillor,Bernhard Wolf, said pothole teams are working under difficultconditions following the recent weather

“Unfortunately, without additional support fromthe Metro and more repair teams being deployed, the current teams can physically only repair alimited number of potholes per day,” Wolf said.

Ward 3councillor,David Hayselden, said community assistancehas helped fill gaps where municipal capacity has been stretched, withresidents andlocal businesses supporting temporary repairs in Walmer at several key intersections, including Main Road and 9th Avenue, Church Road and 8th Avenue, and Heugh Road.

Ward 7councillor, Brendon

Pegram, said heavy rainfall has led to newpothole formation in several areas, withrepairs being attended to as resources become available.

Ward 6councillor Gert Engelbrecht said road conditions in some areas have worsened significantly.

“The condition of many of our roads hasbecome unacceptable and poses arisk tomotorists,” he said, adding thatpotholes continue toreopen after rainfall and further deterioration is being reported across multiple wards.

Municipalrestorationefforts

Alongsideroad repairs, the municipalitysays major progress is beingmade in restoring electricityand water servicesfollowing the same flood disasterthatdamagedroad infrastructure.

Followinga rapid response and War Room intervention initiated by the Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, on 26 May 2026, restoration teams have been deployedacross affected areas.

The storm event, whichbegan on 4May 2026, resulted in extensive electricityinfrastructure damageand widespread outages, with approximately 600 fault cases reported across high, medium and low voltage networks.

Themunicipality confirms that allhigh voltage and medium voltage faults have been resolved, while around 300 low voltage faults have been completed and approximately 230 remain in progress.

Uitenhageand North depots were the most

Residentsare encouraged to report outages through ward councillors where call centreaccess is

limited, while further technical resources arebeing considered to improve underground fault detection and futureresponse capacity.

Matriculantcompetitioncultivatesleadershipandopportunities

THE Kovsie Alumni Trust’s(KAT) involvement in the Matriculantof the Year competition aligns closely with the trust’s commitment to empowering young people through education, leadershipdevelopment, and the creation of opportunities.

This is according to BertieHaasbroek, chairperson of KAT.

“The competition celebrates academic excellence, resilience and potential –values that are essential for building astronger South Africa. By supporting initiatives thatrecognise and uplift matric learners, we contribute to creating pathways for future leaderswhile encouraginga culture of achievement, integrity, and communityimpact.”

This competition, presented by the University of the Free State (UFS) and NovusMedia, helps matric learners develop the qualities they need to succeed.

“Today’s matriculants needresilience, adaptability, critical thinking, communication skills, and awillingnesstokeep learning. Academ-

ic achievement alone is no longer enough –young people must also be able to collaborate, solveproblems creatively, and lead with confidence and integrity.”

Haasbroek says the competition challenges learners to present themselvesprofessionally, think beyond theclassroom, and engage in opportunitiesthat require discipline, confidence, and leadership. It encourages bothpersonaland academic growth.

“Life takesusthrough dangerous roads, twists, drifts, rivers, tsunamis, and deserts. Butthose who start preparing early enough (atschool) are betterequipped to navigate life.

Sport hasalready taught them about winning andlosing; culturehas already taught themabout being averageoroutstanding, and about creativity. Leadership positions have already taught them that popularity fades, and that norms and values will take you further thanapplause ever will.”

Haasbroek says South Africa’s youthface significant challenges. These include inequality, limited access to opportunities, and uncertainty about the future.

“Initiatives like this provide recognition, encouragement and exposure to opportunities that many young people would otherwise never receive.

“It motivates learners to strive for excellence and shows them hard work and dedication arevalued Competitions of thisnaturealso help build confidenceand inspire young people to believe in their own potential, regardless of their background.”

Burgert vanHeerden, afinalist last yearand now afirst-yearmedical student, agrees the competition boosted hisself-esteem

“When we first worked in agroup, and the group chose me as the leader, Ihad to stop my smile from reaching my ears!”

Theformer learner of Hoër Landbouskool Marlow in Cradock says he surprised himself with how quickly he adapted to all the new people.

“It was always difficult formeto open up and getcomfortable around others, but Idecided Iwas just going to give the finalround my best shot.”

INTERNATIONAL Irish dancing

examiner, Richard Griffin, was left highly impressed by the standard of Irishdancing displayed by students from Gqeberha dance schools during his recent examination visit.

Griffin,a qualified Irish dancing teacher, adjudicator and examiner from Great Britain, praised the dancers trained under the tutelage of newly qualified Irish dancing teacher Joanne Kerr. She successfully completed the intensive Teagascóir Choimisiúin le Rincí Gaelacha (TCRG) teaching examinations in Prague last year

Griffin’s examination sessions took place at Toynbee Ballet Academy in Gelvandale, where seven studentscompleted their first Irish dancing examinations and achieved distinctions, and at DanceDynamics, where afurther 14 dancers were examined andachieved distinctions.

Griffin commended the dancers on their excellent timingand technique —qualities regarded as essential in Irish dancing— as well as their flawless carriage and presentation.

Kerrsaid she was bothimpressed and extremely proud of how all her students performed. “Now it is time to continue teaching with my heartand soul and helping every dancer blossom into the very best version of themselves,” she said.
