Tree-killingbeetlespreadsacrossGqeberha

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

THE PolyphagousShot Hole Borer (PSHB), an invasive beetle that kills trees by boring into them and spreading adestructive fungus, isspreading through Gqeberha’s urban green spaces, conservation experts warn.

New and expanding infestations have beenrecorded over the pastyear, including in areas suchasthe Baakens Valley and Theescombe, with experts saying that the pest is no longer confined to isolated sites and maybespreading more widely across the metro.

Conservation specialist, Reinier van der Kuip, of the WESSA Algoa Bay Branch, says field monitoringinand around the BaakensValley,Theescombe and surrounding urban green corridors has recorded confirmed and suspected infestations since last year, with further cases emerging in 2026.

He says the spread is closely linked to human movement of infected wood and green waste, makingcontainment increasingly difficult once infestations become established.

From aconservation perspective, he warns that the PSHB (Euwallacea fornicatus complex), together with itsfungal symbiont (Fusariumeuwallaceae),represents a“severe and urgentthreat”toGqeberha’s urbanecosystems.

“The threat to the ecological integrity and long-term functioning of Gqeberha’s urbangreen infrastructure is extremely high,” he shared with the PE Express

According to updated data from the Forestry and AgriculturalBiotechnology Institute (FABI), 181 tree species are susceptibletoinfestation, including 97 indigenous species. Of these, 97 species —55indigenous are considered reproductive hosts where the beetlecan successfully establish and reproduce, ultimately killing thetree.

Van der Kuip warned that this shifts the risk from individual tree loss to broader ecosystem instability. “If left unchecked, PSHB could cause widespread tree mortality and severe biodiversity loss,” he said.

“Open canopy gaps would likely be invaded by alien plant species, further degrading ecosystemsand increasing long-term management costs.”

He added thatthe beetle spreads through infected wood, with human movement acting as the primary driver of new outbreaks

The Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality (NMBM) says it hasactivated its Public Health EnvironmentalManagement Sub-Directoratefollowing reports of suspected sightings from members of the public.

Officials say allcases are being investigated, with containment measures already underway, including the removal of infected trees, on-site chipping of material and controlled disposalofinfested wood at designated sites. The municipality is also workingwith aspecialist who hasstudied the beetlefor several years.

Nelson Mandela BayExecutive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe urged residents to remain calm andsupport containment ef-

forts.

“Weunderstand the seriousness of the threatthis poses to the environmental sustainability of the city, andweare giving it the necessary attentionthrough our environmentalmanagement structures,” she said.

Vander Kuip warned that Riparian areas are particularly vulnerable to PSHB, as tree loss alongriver corridors can increase erosionand weaken naturalwater regulation processes.

Riparian systems are the natural zones of land alongrivers, streams and wetlands. These areas play acritical ecological role by stabilising riverbanks, filtering water, reducing erosion, andproviding habitat for birds, insects andotherwildlife

“The beetle is easily transported in infested firewood, timber andgarden waste,”

Vander Kuip shared. “Human movement is the fastest way for this species to spread between neighbourhoods and cities.”

He urged residents nottomove firewood overlongdistances, to dispose of green waste responsibly andtoreport suspected infestations immediately.

“Public participationisthe most effective andlow-costmeasure to slow thespread,” he said.

According to Vander Kuip, most South African cities are notadequately prepared for an invasive species outbreak of this scale.

“Current invasive management programmes are largely reactiverather than proactive,” he shared.

While cities such as CapeTown, Johannesburg andDurbanhave monitoring systemsinplace, hewarned that even these would come under pressure if thespread accelerated.

He called forstronger coordination, rapid-response capacity andstricter control of wood movement.

“Even small-scalemovement of infected wood can establish new infestations that are extremelydifficult to control,” Vander Kuip warned.

If PSHBspreads widelyacross theEastern Cape, Vander Kuip warned that thelongterm consequences couldbesevere. He added that widespread loss of indigenous trees wouldfragment habitats, reduce biodiversity and weaken ecosystem services such as shade, carbon storage, waterregulation and soil stability.

“Over time, these changes couldpermanently alterbothnatural and urban landscapes across theregion,” he said Citizen science platforms such as iNaturalist allowusers to upload photographs of suspected infestations for expert verification. Reportscan also be submitted to the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI).

THENelson Mandela Bay Municipality has launched anew WhatsApp Safety Line as partofits enhanced approachtocombating crime and improving community safety.

The WhatsApp number 079490 0480 went liveon15April, enabling members of the public to report incidents directly to the Metro Police Sub-directorate. The service operates with 24-hour backend support to ensure all complaints are received, processed, and acted upon promptly.

Accessiblereportingforresidents

Executive MayorBabalwa Lobishe said the WhatsApp line represents a significant step forward in community policing. “This launch provides

our residentswith an accessible tool to report incidents at theirfingertips. Through the CooperativeAgreement signed among NMBM,SAPS,and other stakeholders last year, we continue to improve through innovativesolutions aligned with current technological developments. We urge residents to use this platform responsiblyso that it canmakeameaningful difference in our communities.”

THEBaakens Valley Business Cluster, one of eleven geographic clustersoperating underthe banner of the NelsonMandela BayBusiness Chamber, hasofficially commenced Phase1 of an ambitious alien vegetation clearing initiative in theBaakens Valley, marking asignificantsteptowards restoring one of NelsonMandela Bay’s most treasurednatural assets.

This intervention speakstoabroader vision of reclaiming and revitalising the Valleyasasafe, accessible and ecologically thriving space for all residents.Yearsof dense alien vegetation growth have not only obscured visibility within sections of the Valley but have also contributedtorising safetyconcerns, including challenges linked to illegal occupation in heavilyovergrown areas.

By systematically clearinginvasiveplant species, the initiative is already opening up the landscape -restoring sightlines, enhancing safety and re-establishing asense of shared public space

Beyond these immediate benefits, the project deliverscritical environmental gains.

The Baakens River system, long burdened by blockages caused by invasive growth, will see improved flow as clearing progresses.

This is expected to significantly strengthen flood mitigation efforts whileenhancing stormwater management across the Valley.

Equallyimportant is the ecologicalrestoration underway.

The Valleyhas been heavilyinfested with invasive species such as Spanish reed and Brazilianpeppertrees, both of whichhave disruptednatural biodiversity and placed a strain on the surrounding ecosystem. Their removal will allow indigenous vegetationto regenerate, restoringbalance andsupporting the return of local flora and fauna.

The clearing operation is being undertaken by the Working on Fire (WoF)teambased in VanStadens -a leading, government-supported environmental management programme renowned for its expertise in fire management, invasive species control and ecological rehabilitation.

The 12-member team currently deployed brings specialised skills in species identification and environmentallyresponsible clearing methods, ensuring that the work is conductedtothe highest standardswith

minimalecologicaldisturbance.

Having commenced operations last week, Phase 1isexpected to be completed within two weeks, after which Phase 2willbuild on this progress to extend the impact across additional sections of the Valley.

Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela BayBusiness Chamber,Denise van Huyssteen, emphasised the broader significanceofthe initiative, noting,“TheBaakens Valleyisone of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most valuable naturaland economic assets, andits restoration is criticalnot only from an environmental perspective, but also in terms of urban safety, investment confidence and quality of life. Initiatives such as thisdemonstrate the tangible impact that coordinated business-ledactioncan have in shaping amoreresilient and liveablecity.”

Shefurther highlighted the role of the Chamber’s cluster modelindriving meaningful change, “The Baakens Valley Geographic Clusterisone of eleven clusters under the Chamber where businesses collaborate togetheronavoluntarybasis to pursue initiatives which improvetheir surrounding operatingenvironment.

“Thisinitiative is apowerful example of howlocalised partnerships candeliver practical,on-the-ground solutions that benefit both communities and the broadereconomy. We greatlyappreciatethe efforts of allthe participants in the Clusterwho are makingadifference in preserving acritical natural asset of the Bay.”

Van Huyssteen addedthat environmental rehabilitationmust be viewed as an investment in the city’s future: “Clearing invasive species and restoring naturalecosystems is not simply about conservation; it is about unlockingthe full potential of spaces like the Baakens Valley as safe, accessible and attractiveenvironments forresidents, visitors and investors alike. It reinforcesNelson MandelaBay’s positioningasadestination that valuessustainability, resilienceand inclusive growth.”

Sheconcluded by underscoring the importanceofsustained, collective effort: “What we are seeing in the BaakensValley is the result of strong partnerships and ashared commitment to action.Maintaining thismomentum willbekey to ensuring long-term impact, andweencourage continued collaborationacross all stakeholders to safeguard andenhance this vitalnatural corridor.”

The removalofinvasivespecies will allow indigenous vegetationtoregenerate, restoringbalance and supporting the return of local flora andfauna.

Rugbyskrywergesels oor‘rugbyaskunsvorm’

MEDEWERKER
