EIGHT-MONTH-OLD Asenathi’s life was changed on Thursday morning when she underwent surgery at Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital to correct asevere bilateral cleft lip.

The procedure, performed by Dr Chris van der Walt, was asuccess —and as the infantwas wheeledout of theatre, relief washed over hermother’s face.

The operation formedpart of alandmarkthree-day surgical initiative hosted by the Smile Foundation from 25 to 27 March, marking the final “Smile Week” for van der Walt after 16 years of service that has transformed the lives of more than 500 children

Speaking shortly after surgery, the head of plastic surgery at the hospital said the programme remains as vital as ever.

“We have 19 patients booked,” said van der Walt.

“This morning, we did the littlebaby with the bilateral cleft. It is quite adeformity to have, and everything went very well with the child, so I’msure the parents are going to be very ecstatic.”

LittleAsenathi from Humansdorp, whose condition had affected her ability to feed and smile, was safely in her mother’s arms after the more than two-hour procedure.

Hermother, Ondela Ndudula, described the emotional toll of the experience.

“I was very nervous, and Iwas shaking, especially during the surgery, but now, after they came out of theatre, I’m just very happy,”she said. “There is abig difference after surgery becauseher lip was open before, born likethat, and now it is closed.I’m justsohappy.”

Vander Walt’s final Smile Week signals atransition, rather than acompletedeparture. After 25 surgicaloutreach weeks, he plans to step back from leadership whilecontinuing to support services at the hospital.

“We all make work decisions and I’m at the stage where Idecided to career out,” he said.

“This is my primary passion and love of plastic surgery, so Ihave already been

approached by the hospital and, with mutual agreement, Iwill still continue to do sessions at the hospital.

“We will continue to offer support for the children. The clinical serviceswill remain, but thereisaneed for someone new to take thingsforward, especially with academic development.”

Despite stepping back, van derWalt said that cleft care in the province cannot be

interrupted —particularly giventhe severe shortage of specialists.

“This kind of surgery is highlyspecialised,”heexplained. “I happentohave a passion for it, butunfortunately, I’mthe only plasticsurgeon who doesthisinthe whole Eastern Cape,soIcan’t notassist these children.

“It’s quite frightening to think aboutit.

The Eastern Cape is the second biggest

provinceinSouth Africa, andwehave onepersondoing this. We have to look beyondwhathappens now— we have to look at future training.”

He said efforts areunderway to build capacity, though training remains complex.

“Weare in theprocess of atrainingprogramme here, butitisnot easy to train surgeons because it is sucha specialised skill. If we can getitright, wewill hopefully have moreplastic surgeons joining thedepartment in future.”

Vander Walt’sjourney with the Smile Foundation began shortlyafterhearrived in theEastern Cape 17 yearsago.

“When Ifirst came here from the Western Cape, the Smile Week initiative had just started there, andIwas surprised it wasn’t in theEastern Cape,” he recalled. “With management, we made the decision to host thefirst Smile Week in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) around 2010.

“Wefirst hadhelpfromoutside, and then within two yearswewere running theSmile Weeksonour own —that’show thetransfer of skills happened, and before you know it, you do 25.”

BeyondGqeberha, hehas alsoextended services to underserved areas, leading annualoutreach teams to KuGompo City (formerly known as EastLondon) over thepastfiveyears.

The significance of theprogramme extendsfar beyondsurgery, saidSmile Foundation COO Tshidi Chabane-Xaba.

“This is essentialhealthcare. Without surgery, children like Asenathiface feeding difficulties, social isolation andshattered futures.

“Dr van derWalt doesn’t just operate; he helps give children thechance to live with confidenceand dignity.”

She added: “Dr van derWalt hasshown up for 16 yearswith quiet dedication, exceptional skill, andgenuinecarefor every child andfamily he encountered What he hasgiven cannotbecaptured only in surgeries or statistics —itlives on in people.”

The surgery on Thursdaywas supported by partners, includingthe Kouga Wind Farm, highlightingthe importanceof collaboration in sustainingspecialised healthcareservices.

GLOBAL oil market instability linked to the ongoingMiddle East conflict is beginning to hit Nelson MandelaBay, with early signs of fuel supply strain and rising costs already emerging.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has warned that some local fuel suppliers are introducing surcharges in response to volatility in global oil markets.

Chamber chief executive officer Denise van Huyssteen said the impact is already being felt at ground level.

“Some local fuel suppliers are implementing fuel surcharges as adirect responsetothe ongoing conflict and its resultant volatility on the global oil markets, which in turn is impacting local fuel cost and availability,” shesaid.

The pressure comes ahead of an additional blow, with increases in the fuel levy and Road Accident Fund levy —announced in February’s Budget Speech set to take effect on 1April.

Asnapshot survey conducted by the Chamber paints aconcerning picture. It found that 25% of responding businesses do not have immediate access to fuel, while 26% reported that their supply is being rationed.

“These businesses are expecting increases in operational and input costs, which are likely to reduce profit margins as they absorb the additional costs, and which may later cause inflation levels to increase,” said van Huyssteen.

Rising fuel costs come ata timewhen themetro’s economy is already under pressure, with the official unemployment rate sitting at 28.2%.

“Our automotive manufacturing industry, which serves as the anchor to our economy, faces growing threats of deindustrialisation. The agriculture sector

faces increasing uncertainty in termsof export markets, and our tourismvalue proposition has continued itsdecline,” shesaid

Fuel prices have arippleeffect across the economy, increasing the costoftransportinggoods to bothlocal and export markets and pushing up pricesfor consumers.

“This will further increase the costbase for local businesses from smallthrough to largebusinesses, that may need to reduceexpenses, restructuretheir operationsoreven close,” Van Huyssteen said.

Consumersare also expected to feel the strain, withhigher commuting costs and potential knock-on ef travel becomes more

32% of businesses are aware of fuel stations experiencing petrol and diesel shortages.

Van Huyssteen called for urgent intervention to stabilise the situation.

“It is vital that the country has mitigation measures in place to ensure that alternative fuel sources are secured, so that thereare no disruptions to supply and that fuel price increases arecontained as far as possible,” she said Shealso warned against opportunistic behaviourinthe market.

“Asanemergencytemporary measure, more frequent weekly adjustments to regulatedfuel pricing should be introduced to prevent unnecessary hoarding of supplies.”

She addedthatfurther stepscould include publishing safe fuel storageguidelines, sharing real-time localinformationonfuel availability andqueues, and encouraging support for locally producedgoods to help managedemand.

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

IN aquiet but determined effort to make adifference in the lives of vulnerable children, a 17-year-old Framesby High School learner is using his own story of loss and resilienceto bring hope to children battling cancer.

Grade 11 learner, Kyle Pretorius, has launched Project Golden Ribbon, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and support for children affectedbycancer through theCHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation.

The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation has formally endorsed the initiative.

“We are extremely grateful toKyle, his school, family and community for supporting our workand fully endorsehis activities,” said CHOC Eastern Cape Regional Manager Juliet Houghton

She said the campaign would help raise awareness of childhood cancer whilesupporting servicessuch as accommodation, transport, nutritionaland emotional care provided to children and their families at no cost.

Kyle’s journey is rooted in personal tragedy.

In 2013, when he was five, he losthis father Willem Pretorius, apolice sergeant stationed at GelvandaleSAPS. His death sent shockwaves through thecommunity.

“It was anormal day. He had justfinished his night shift and was supposed tofetch Kyle fromcrèche and take him to the movies,” his mother, Zonda Pretorius, shared with the PEExpress.“He told me he was going tothe gym first. When the school called tosay Kyle had not been fetched, Iknew something was wrong.”

Shesaid repeatedcalls wentunanswered.

“He was someone who always answered his phone. Ikepttrying, but there wasnoresponse,” she said.

Amissing persons report was opened as concern grew. “Later that night, officers came to the house. His vehicle had been found in

abushy area between Motherwell and Uitenhage. Hehad been shot,” she said

The casehas never been solved.Despite the loss, she believes the experienceshaped her son’s resilience.

“Myson had to overcome alot at avery young age, but he never gaveup. He is strong, kind-hearted and determined to make adifference.”

Kyle has since developed into ahigh-achieving learner, excelling academically with aparticular strength in Engineering Graphics and

He is also an activemember of his school’s Land Service organisation, ayouth programme focused on leadership and community involvement. Since joining Grade 8in2023, he has progressed into aleadership roleand, in 2025, wasappointed to the organisation’s management team. Earlier thisyear, he receivedhonoursfor leadership, dedication and service

“I wanted to do something meaningful with the opportunity I’ve been given,”hesaid.

“Land Service is about helping your community. Iwant to give back and help children who are going through very difficult situations.” His initiative focuses on supporting children diagnosed with cancer.

“We are collecting items like toiletries, food and clothing because thesesmall things can make abig difference in achild’s daily life during treatment,” Kyle said. “It’s about showing them they are not alone.”

Houghton said community-driven initiatives are essential to sustaining CHOC’s work.

“We relysolely on the kindness of communities to fund our work,”she said, adding that donations would directly support children and teenagerswithcancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

Physical donations will be collected and delivered through CHOC or dropped off at Framesby High School, withall contributions going directly to the organisation.

“My son’s heart is truly in this,” said Zonda. “He knows what it feels like to experience loss and he wants to use that understanding to help children who are suffering. Even if he can make adifference in one child’s life, it would mean everything.”

Kyle has also launched aFacebook page to share updates and encourage community involvement. He plans to expand awareness through public activations, including at shopping centres.

“This project is about more than donations,” he said. “It’s about kindness, compassion and bringing people together to support children facing one of the toughestchallenges of their lives.”

For his mother, the initiative reflects adeeper purpose. “Kyle is my hero,” she said. “His story is one of pain, but also one of purpose. Ibelieve it can inspire other young people to turntheir struggles intosomething meaningful.”
