Fourthpyloncollapsesparksoutagefears

THE collapse of afourth transmission pylon on akey electricitylineinNelson MandelaBay last week triggered widespread power outages and renewed warnings that furtherfailures could occur if ageinginfrastructure is not urgently upgraded.

Residents acrossseveralsuburbs wereleft without electricity after apylon on the Chelsea–Arlington 132kV line collapsed overnight on Wednesday,11March.

According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the outage was triggered whena132kV circuit breaker tripped on the transmission line following the collapse Areas affected included Summerstrand, Humewood, Forest Hill, Southdene, sections of South End, Happy Valley and the Boardwalk precinct, as well as Lovemore Park, Miramar, Pari Park, Providentia, Walmer and parts of WalmerHeights.

Member of the MayoralCommittee for Electricity and Energy, Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, Acting City Manager, Lonwabo Ngoqo, and Acting Executive Director for Electricity and Energy, Bernhardt Lamour, visited thesite on Wednesday,11March, to assess the damage.

According to Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Retief Odendaal, the incident marks the fourth collapse of apylon on the same line in the past two years.

“Thisisnow the fourth instance of a collapsed pylon on thesame line over the pasttwo years,”hesaid.

Odendaal warnedthat further electricity outages could occur if the com-

promised pylons along the line are not urgently replaced

Days before the incident, Odendaal wrote to Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe and Acting City Manager Ngoqo, raising concerns about rusted pylons on the Bushy Park section of the line.

“I note with concern the fact that you have not made funding available in your adjustments budgettoreplace and/or refurbishthe rusted pylons on the aforementioned line,” he wrote.

“You are already in possessionof documentation that states that these pylons are compromised and that they have reached itsdesign life.”

The letter was also sent to Minister of Electricityand Energy,KgosientshoRamokgopa, and Eskom acting group chief fordistribution, Agnes Mlambo, calling for intervention to ensure the electricity supplyline servingthe metro is secured

Following the latest collapse, Odendaal said he met Mnqokoyion sitetodiscuss the funding required to replace the compromised pylons.

“She indicated that they needed R33 million to R35million for the job and thatthey simply didn’t have the money,”hesaid.

According tothe municipality, technical teams had alreadyinspected the affected electricity line earlier last week after identifying structural concerns on several pylons.

“Following that inspection, the municipality began initiating the required procurement and budgetprocesses toprioritise urgent repairs on the affected infrastructure,” the metro said.

“Unfortunately, one of the pylons collapsed overnight before the sched-

uled intervention work could begin.”

An emergency repairprogramme has since been activated, with contractors instructed to accelerate the work.

Meanwhile, the municipality said it had noted correspondence reportedly submitted by acivilsociety coalition to President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding infrastructure and service delivery challenges in the metro.

In astatement, the municipality said it respected the constitutional right of residents and civ raise concerns about service delivery

The metro acknowled son Mandela Bay significant service particularly in relation tricity, water and structure.

The journeyforms part of his effort to drawnationalattention tothe ongoing challenges faced by womenand children affectedbyviolence, whilealsoencouraging communities to becomemore actively involved in prevention

Originally from KuGompo City(previously known as East London) but now living in Gqeberha, Qabo said the campaign was inspired by the experiences of people around him

“I’m not someone who has familywho experienced GBV, butIdohave friends who grew up in homeswhere violence was present,” he shared with the PE Express

“Whenyou look at the statistics, there are more men abusing women than women abusing men. That’s whyI believe we need to start working withyoung people and changing the way boys grow up and viewrelationships.”

Qabo mentors youngboys throughdiscussions about social normsand healthy behaviour, encouraging them to reject violence and respectwomen.

He believesprevention must start early.

“Withadults, there is often very little we can do to change behaviour, butifwe work with the younger generation, we can start changing attitudes,” he said.

Qabo completed matric last year and is currently taking time to improve his resultsbefore pursuing further studies next year.

He relocated to Gqeberhain2022 due to his mother’s work. Although he is not aprofessional cyclist, Qabohas spent the pasttwo months

WILLEMIEN GREEN
