A NATIONWIDE initiative to boost literacy and numeracy skills amongst South African schoolchildren saw 1000 schools and non-profit organisations (NPOs) receive mobile library trolleys, as announced recently by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, alongside executives from Oxford University Press South Africa (OUPSA) and AVBOB
The 2025 Road to Literacy campaign included over 100 beneficiaries from the Eastern Cape, with Uitenhage Primary School among
the institutions set to receive the valuable educational resources
Other Eastern Cape recipients included Arcadia Primary School, Brylin Primary School and Caritas Primary School in Nelson Mandela Bay
Each mobile library trolley, valued at R57 000, contains 500 OUPSA books carefully selected to support literacy and numeracy skills in alignment with the CAPS curriculum
The campaign, which represented a total investment of R57 million, is designed to support Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education initiatives by providing materials in all 11 official written
languages of South Africa
Gwarube praised the initiative during a panel discussion last week, saying, "This initiative is a powerful example of what can be achieved through partnerships
The campaign addresses a pressing national priority, the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, while supporting policy frameworks aimed at integrating diversity into school curricula "
The 2025 campaign marked substantial growth from its inaugural year in 2022, when only 180 library trolleys were distributed
This year's effort will see more than 500 000 books distributed na-
tionwide, double the number from 2024
Karen Simpson, Managing Director of OUPSA, emphasised the importance of mother tongue literacy, "Access to books in a learner's mother tongue has a profound impact on their ability to grasp foundational concepts, stay engaged in the classroom, and remain in the education system "
The mobile trolleys were specifically designed to be durable and accessible in shared or under-resourced learning environments
They included materials for both reading and mathematics development, making the campaign one of a few national projects focused on
both literacy and numeracy at the foundational phase
AVBOB Group CEO, Carl van der Riet highlighted the campaign's core purpose, "Literacy and numeracy are academic skills and critical tools for participation, for opportunity and dignity “They are the building blocks of future learning and the means by which children are empowered to shape their own lives "
The selection process involved 8 661 nominations from across all nine provinces, submitted by educators, caregivers, community leaders and members of the public, underscoring the nationwide engagement with the initiative

A COLLABORATIVE initiative between the Department of Basic Education, Baby Soft® and Domestos made significant strides in addressing the critical issue of “toilet loss” in South African schools, according to results released last month
The "Unstoppable Together" campaign, launched in 2024, tackled the widespread neglect and improper maintenance of school toilets across the Eastern Cape province, with remarkable improvements in sanitation facilities serving nearly 100 000 children
Last year at the training session held at Happydale Special School in Algoa Park, the PE Express reported that representatives from 18 schools across Nelson Mandela Bay attended the event, where they participated in practical training sessions that covered a variety of cleaning techniques and best practices for maintaining school facilities
The aim was to ensure that the schools were not only clean and safe for learners and staff, but also to improve working conditions for the cleaning personnel
Wilna le Roux, a representative from School Health and Social Planning, Eastern Cape Department of Education, emphasised the importance of the initiative
“We have identified 18 schools to take part in this programme Maintaining clean and safe schools is essential for the well-being of our learners and staff This training not only equips our cleaners with better skills, but it also helps bridge the gap of understanding between cleaners and school management,” she said at the time Different media personalities and influencers, such as Zizo Tshwete, Catherine Constantinides, and Gqeberha-born Babalwa Mcaciso, were present to help spread awareness
Now, a year later, the collaborative initiative has released results from a recent audit
Significant improvements revealed in endline audit
The initiative, which targeted 300 schools in the Eastern Cape representing 99 043 learners aged between 5 and 14 years old, began with a comprehensive baseline audit to assess the state of school toilets
Baby Soft® Brand Manager, Siyolise Shinga, described the campaign as “a resounding success” following the release of the endline audit results “Overall, the number of school toilets meeting minimum criteria increased substantially
44% of toilet cubicles overall passed the endline audit, up from only 8% at the start of the campaign These results are a testament to what’s possible when we work together,” Shinga said

With support from the Department of Basic Education, fieldworkers visited participating schools to provide essential clean-
ing tools and supplies
Access to bleach rose from 67% to 79% of schools
• Provision of uniforms for cleaning staff improved from 35% to 49%
Personal Protective Equipment availability surged from 31% to an impressive 93%
• Toilet paper availability increased dramatically from 61% to 99%
“When a child can use a clean toilet with access to toilet paper, and when a cleaner is properly equipped and protected, it sends a powerful message: you matter These are the foundations of respect, health, and human rights, and we’re proud to play a part in helping schools uphold them,” Shinga explained
Education fuelled sustainable improvement
The campaign’s educational component provided critical training for cleaning staff and implemented administrative systems to maintain cleanliness
• Use of cleaning rosters increased from
1 7% to 43%
Implementation of daily cleaning checklists rose from 0 3% to 42%
• Frequency of toilet cleaning (at least once daily) doubled from 23% to 48%
Cleaner motivation increased significantly with 79% reporting feeling extremely motivated compared to 64% at the campaign s start
Many cleaning staff reported a newfound sense of pride and purpose in their ability to make a difference in learners’ lives
The road ahead
Despite the encouraging results, Shinga acknowledged there remained “a long road ahead to ensure lasting change in school sanitation ”
“The data gathered through this process serves as a powerful starting point – providing clear evidence of what’s working and where urgent attention is still needed to ensure long-term, sustainable change,” Shinga concluded

"Her Granny, with whom she lives, made us aware of the charity work which she started in Grade 5 in 2024 Early in 2024, Chloe-Jade had a heartfelt idea to give something special to children who have nothing at Christmas She always prays for those living on the streets and those in need," the letter said
The letter said Chloe-Jade had started collecting teddies and asked her Granny to find out which organisation needed them the most
The letter also revealed that this year, as a part of the Mr and Miss Eastern Cape Primary Schools Competition, Chloe-Jade has gone above and beyond

TWO talented Gqeberha rugby players, Joandre van Jaarsveld and Silindezihle Ntshokoma, both learners at Grey High School, have been selected to participate in a prestigious international exchange programme with Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom
Joining Van Jaarsveld and Ntshokoma on this international opportunity is Akhumzi Masoka (17), another Grey High School learner who hails from Humansdorp Robbi Kempson, Head of Rugby at Grey High School, announced the selection with pride
"These young men have been selected by the Grey High School Rugby Club to go on a student exchange to Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom," said Kempson
He said that they will be accommodated at the schools boarding house on Hurstpierpoint College Lane for the duration of their exchange, under the pastoral care of Fred Pierrepont, the Head of Rugby for Hurst
The exchange will run from August 24 to December 7, offering the learners a unique opportunity to experience both academic and sporting life in the UK
Van Jaarsveld expressed his gratitude for being chosen
"I feel privileged that I was selected," said Van Jaarsveld
"I'm excited about the whole experience I have never been outside of South Africa, so this is a whole new life experience "
Van Jaarsveld further said that he is looking forward to experiencing a school and culture in a different country
For Ntshokoma, the sporting as-
pect holds particular appeal
"I'm very excited This is a great opportunity to play rugby in a new environment," said Ntshokoma
"It is also exciting to be at a different school, one that is a co-ed school "
Kempson further emphasised the broader educational value of the programme
"The reciprocity has been afforded between the two schools for young scholars to engage in each other's programmes, both scholastic and on the sporting front," said Kempson
"The impact that this experience can have on their maturity, independence, social skills, and cultural awareness is invaluable "
Kempson said that the exchange, now in its second year, has already proven successful
"We have three boys from Hurst arriving with us later this month, and the exchange is in its second year, after having three boys at Grey High in 2024," said Kempson
He further said that the exchange, although in its infancy, has been a huge success, and a firm bond has formed between the schools and players
Kempson said that academic continuity has been carefully considered
"The tests and exams for third and fourth terms will be written under supervision at Hurst, so they will need to attend class and ensure their academics are not neglected," said Kempson
The opportunity, however, comes with significant costs, including international flights ranging from R15 000 to R23 000, short-term visitor visa fees of approximately R3 000, and passport application expenses
To raise the necessary funds, both Van Jaarsveld and Ntshokoma have established BackaBuddy campaigns to help fund their journey
"The parents of the Hurst boys that came over are willing to help with most, if not all other costs associated with the UK side; however, financial support is still needed for flights and administrative costs," said Kempson
He said that they look forward to building the relationship between the two schools and affording these young men the best possible opportunities to flourish through the exchange programme

Speaking to PE Express, she said that she hopes to be an inspiration to the youth who come from disadvantaged backgrounds Leah said, "Many children my age want to reach their full potential in life, especially those playing hockey Their dream is to one day play at a provincial level and sometimes, their dreams go unachieved, as most do not have the funds to compete at a high level Sometimes, you have to pay a fortune to keep your place in your team, which is rather unfair, because they will never really know how good they are or if they are good enough to play provincial hockey " She added that she is grateful to be able to play provincial hockey "I pushed myself many times, and my coaches especially They push me to be the best version of myself, on and off the field, and I am grateful I can make an impact on others to pursue their dreams as well I am also excited about this Eastern Province selection as it is my second year Once a player is chosen three times, then they qualify to play on a national level, which is my dream " Reminiscing about when her

THE Community Chest annual Winter Woolly Drive is in full swing, and the response has already been overwhelming
They have collected several bags full of warm clothing, including knitted jumpers, cosy beanies and lovely handmade jackets Community Chest recently visited one of their ECD (Early Childhood Development) beneficiaries in Joe Slovo and brought warm smiles to these little ones.
The principal of Kamvalethu Day Care, Nokuzola Mphalisa, warmly welcomed the donation, expressing her sincere gratitude. “Many of our children come to school without jackets or even shoes,” she said “With the recent cold snap, this donation couldn’t have come at a better time.”
“The joy on the children’s faces, all dressed up in their winter outfits, fills us with such a humble feeling,” said Colette Theron, Marketing Manager at Community Chest.
"As the cold weather continues, we remain committed to reaching more people affected by the bitter conditions. Our call remains for the public to continue clearing out their cupboards and donating to this worthy cause."

It is no surprise, then, that racing fans are asking whether Greeff will have another Triple Crown winner in the East Cape Challenge for fillies and mares
Stormy Appeal, trained by Gavin Smith in 2003, is the only horse to have won all three legs of this Challenge
