State prosecutor Community mourns loss of Junior King murdercasepostponed NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT
THE Gqeberha art community is in mourning following the tragic death of choreographer, dancer and artist Dugulth “Junior King” Ferreira, who was killed in a head-on collision on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei on Thursday morning. The 29-year-old artist, who had become a symbol of hope and achievement for young people in his community, was among five people travelling in a grey Volkswagen Polo TSI when it collided with a light truck last week. Ferreira died from his injuries, whilst three other passengers sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Pelonomi Trauma in Bloemfontein for treatment. According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane, initial investigations indicate that the Polo was travelling southbound towards Bloemfontein whilst the truck was heading northbound towards Winburg when the vehicles collided head-on. Both drivers escaped the collision unharmed. Ferreira was seated behind the driver, alongside his two young children, when the accident occurred. As news of his death spread, tributes poured in across social media platforms, highlighting Ferreira’s profound impact on his community and the broader South African arts scene. “A talented young star from the northern areas has tragically fallen. Junior King was distinguished by his remarkable dance moves and rap skills, and also dedicated himself to empowering young boys in the Northern Areas through his activism and mentorship. The Bethelsdorp Northern Areas community mourns the loss of another promising young life. May he rest in peace,” read one tribute. Another mourner expressed Ferreira’s significance to the Afrikaans Hip-Hop community: “It is a sad day for us not only for Afrikaans hip-hop but also for Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), his family, friends and kids.”
Junior King died in a road accident on Thursday, 11 December. PHOTO: FACEBOOK A third tribute captured his visible presence in the community: “Junior King has been an inspiration to many, and it’s with utter disbelief that we will not see him in the streets shooting music videos, or content or seeing him on stages doing what he loves. You proved countless times that talk is cheap when you’re a dreamer. Rest easy, your life will never be forgotten.” Born in Kariega and raised in Fernwood Park, Bethelsdorp, Ferreira had been passionate about dance from the age of six. In an interview with PE Express in August, he revealed how his journey began: “I started dancing at the age of six and became a choreographer since the age of eight and was the leader of my school dance group at the time.” His passion for hip-hop and dance distinguished him from his peers during childhood. “When I grew up, everyone else was playing soccer, rugby or cricket, and everyone wanted to play sport,” he shared. “I played sport but never fell in love with it; I never had a passion for it until I found dancing.” With more than 20 years of experience in choreography, Ferreira had worked exten-
sively with his twin sisters and led his own dance group. He had successfully monetised his talent through social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where his performances garnered significant followings. Beyond his artistic achievements, Junior King was deeply committed to mentoring young people in his community. He often counselled aspiring dancers about balancing passion with education: “It is very important to have an academic qualification behind your name because anything can happen in the space of dancing. You could break a leg, so you need an education as a backup.” His message to young people was one of perseverance and possibility: “Work on your passion as hard as you work on your academic studies because your passion can change your life.” His philosophy that “when your passion is your job, you will never feel like you’ve worked a day in your life” resonated with many young people who saw him as proof that dreams could become reality through dedication and hard work. In a statement released following his death, Ferreira’s family described him as “a beloved son, father, brother and artist whose talent and energy touched countless lives.” The family confirmed that his children are safe and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from across South Africa. “We are humbled by the outpouring of love and tributes from fans, friends and fellow artists across South Africa. His legacy as a performer and cultural voice will live on in the hearts of all who knew him,” the family statement read. The family has requested privacy during their time of mourning and asked the public to keep the injured passengers in their prayers as they recover. A case docket for culpable homicide has been opened at Verkeerdevlei Police Station as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision continue.

THE murder case against the pair accused of brutally killing National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prosecutor Tracy Brown has been postponed for three months for further investigation, the Gqeberha Regional Court heard on 11 December. Simthembele Xungu and Ayabulela Busakwe are charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Busakwe also faces additional charges related to kidnapping with intent to commit human trafficking and extortion of Theresa Minnie (73) on 11 August 2025, which are Schedule 6 crimes under the South African Criminal Procedure Amendment Act. This means Busakwe is involved in two ongoing cases simultaneously. PE Express previously reported that Brown was gunned down on 31 July in front of her partner at her Young Park residence after the suspects allegedly followed her home from the New Brighton Magistrate's Court, where she worked at the time. The State prosecutor requested that the matter be postponed as the investigations surrounding the case have not yet been completed. He also added that this postponement would allow the court sufficient time to finalise the investigation and transfer the case to the Gqeberha High Court. Following the murder, the perpetrators allegedly fled in a recognisable Volkswagen Polo and nearly collided with another motorist. The other driver, who serves as a witness for the prosecution, made a positive identification of Xungu as an occupant of the fleeing vehicle. The presiding magistrate confirmed that the matter is still under investigation. The matter was postponed until 3 March 2026 for further investigation. Both accused remain in custody.

DOUBLE THE JOY:
Twins take top prize in‘PE Express’baby competition
NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT
MAKING history in the most heartwarming way possible, a pair of twins have captured the PE Express Christmas baby competition crown, becoming the first duo to share top honours in the contest's proud 21-year tradition. Identical twins Alessio and Azeylio Visenyoue have utterly charmed the judging panel with their absolutely infectious smiles. The delightful duo from Kensington, Gqeberha, were born just one minute apart on 14 March 2025 to proud parents Yardley and Reevan Visenyoue. Alessio arrived first at 14:21, followed by his twin brother Azeylio at 14:22. The journey to parenthood proved quite the surprise for the young couple. Yardley discovered she was expecting the day before her 25th birthday on 10 August 2024. “I’ll never forget the day I found out I was pregnant – gosh, I was over the moon!” she recalled. “I found out a day before my birthday,” she shared. “I jokingly said to my husband whilst we were waiting for our turn with the gynaecologist, ‘What if it’s two babies or three babies?’ My husband just laughed it off, and when it was our turn, guess what we saw? Two little blobs! My husband was in shock, but I was over the moon!” Despite their gynaecologist’s prediction that the twins would be fraternal, Alessio and Azeylio proved to be identical, though Mom

has always been able to tell them apart. “My gynaecologist convinced me that each child had their own placenta and sac and would not be identical. It’s safe to say he was wrong,” she laughed. “But I could always tell
them apart; however, dad and the rest of our family, not so much.” The twins’ unique names hold special meaning for the family. “Azeylio and Alessio both mean ‘God’s gift’ – they are actually biblical,
but I just added and twisted a couple of letters around,” explained Yardley. “I had an entire list of names; it was so hard, but I couldn’t imagine them having any other names.” These are the couple’s first children, with twins running in Yardley’s family on her mother’s side. “They are our first children – hopefully not our last! I’m praying for another set of twins!” she admitted with a chuckle. The nine-month-old boys are described as “such happy, joyful little babies” who are “always laughing and smiling and very curious.” Their favourite entertainment comes from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Miss Rachel, with Yardley occasionally having to mimic the characters’ voices to encourage cooperation. “From time to time, I have to mimic Mickey Mouse and Miss Rachel’s voice in order for them to cooperate – I don’t know how I discovered that, but it works.” When it comes to feeding time, the twins enjoy their purées, particularly fruits and sweet potatoes, whilst watching their beloved programmes. “Every day is a different ball game with these two,” their mother reflected. “Sometimes we take naps together, and other times one sleeps and the other just refuses.” The victory in the PE Express baby competition marks a joyful milestone for this charming Kensington family. “I was so excited to hear they had won the competition; they really do win everyone over with their cute little smiles!”

St Croix Sea Scouts transform Main Library with garden project THE entrance to the Gqeberha Main Library has been given a vibrant new lease on life thanks to a youth-led environmental project by the St Croix Sea Scouts from Bluewater Bay. Working closely with the Historical Society of Port Elizabeth, the Scouts established an Indigenous Garden that enhances the library’s historic setting while supporting biodiversity and conservation education. The Historical Society arranged permission for the use of the space and assisted with soil, compost, and landscaping materials, enabling the Scouts to undertake the project in a meaningful and sustainable way. The garden features hardy Eastern Cape species, including aloes, spekboom, gasteria, and euphorbia. Many of these plants were rescued from development zones within the Coega SEZ, where patches of coastal thicket and natural vegetation are under pressure from industrial expansion. Through a rehoming initiative, these plants were saved from destruction and given a new home at the Main Library. This initiative forms part of the Scouts’ contribution to Scouts South Africa’s National Challenge 2025 and directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including: • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – revitalising a public space and fostering community pride • SDG 13: Climate Action – using water-wise indigenous species that support resilience • SDG 15: Life on Land – protecting threatened plants and promoting local biodiversity. “Our Scouts were involved in every step, from planning the layout, preparing the soil, planting, watering and learning about the ecological importance of each species,” says Norman Visser, Scout Group Leader for the St Croix Sea Scouts. “This project wasn’t just about making the space look better. It was a hands-on lesson in conservation, teamwork and caring for our

Walmer Lawn Tennis Club aces 125th anniversary celebration NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT
Doubles Tournament, usually held around June. It has always been a very social club, but we also have a lot of very strong players who compete at league level and even on a national level, of whom we are very proud. The lockdown during COVID ended up boosting club membership,as it was one of the few sports that could still be played during lockdown. With the help of sponsors and members’contributions,we have managed to resurface all five of our courts over the last three years and have made quite a few improvements to the clubhouse and the garden area around the clubhouse.
THE Walmer Lawn Tennis Club celebrated its 125th anniversary at a special dinner held on Friday, 5 December. The PE Express caught up with Club President Andrew Meldrum, who shared some insight into the club that was established in 1900. Could you give readers the history of the Walmer Lawn Tennis Club? Where and when was the facility initially built and launched, and by whom? The Walmer Lawn Tennis Club was initially established in 1900 and is now 125 years old. This is called a quasquicentennial anniversary. Is the club still situated at the same premises? The club moved around for a bit initially, and the first tennis matches were played on a sort of rough gravel surface. The club eventually made its home on the spot where we are currently located, on the corner of 10th Avenue and Villiers Road, back in 1916 and has been there ever since. Were there any other lawn tennis clubs in Gqeberha at the time? Only PELTC, which is still based at St George’s Park, is older than the Walmer Lawn Tennis Club. Regarding the word ‘lawn’, our courts are hard courts and not grass, but the sport itself is technically called ‘lawn tennis’. Lawn tennis is the sport that most people know simply as tennis, whether it is played on grass
Professor Buys (former Club President), Andrew Meldrum (current Club President) and Garth Loest (former Club President and current Vice President) at the anniversary dinner on 5 December. or any other surface. This is to distinguish it from real tennis, which is a much older form of tennis played indoors. According to Wikipedia, the term ‘real’ was first used by journalists in the early 20th century as a retronym to distinguish the ancient game from modern lawn tennis (even though, at present, the latter sport is seldom contested on lawns outside the few social-club-managed estates such as Wimbledon). How many members did the club initially start with,
Most improved player of the year, Mombasa Maseti (centre), with Garth Loest (left) and Andrew Meldrum (right). PHOTOS: SUPPLIED and was lawn tennis popular when it first started? We think the club started with just four players back in 1900. Since then, membership has grown quite a bit! Currently, the club has around 80 members, with ages ranging from school children and teenagers playing alongside their families right up to members in their 70s and 80s. What are the highlights of the Walmer Lawn Tennis Club throughout the years? The club has become well known for its annual Mixed
How is the anniversary being celebrated this year? We made quite a big thing of the anniversary at this year’s mixed doubles tournament. We also produced some commemorative items like pens and bags. The main event, however, was the 125th anniversary dinner held on Friday last week for club members and invited guests from other tennis clubs in the Bay Area. Is there any message to the club members? Thank you for being part of our loyal tennis community. Why would you say lawn tennis is still popular and enjoyed today amongst young and old alike, across all generations? It is a very social sport, with a lot of players focusing on doubles play as they get older, and it is a sport that you can play virtually your whole life. Although make no mistake, it is a hard sport to learn initially and can take years just to get the basics right. Added to that, it is a great exercise and lots of fun!
Local NPO addresses road safety concerns through youth engagement NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT A NON-PROFIT Organisation (NPO) has been making significant strides in addressing local safety concerns whilst simultaneously providing support to vulnerable youth.
The Ubuntu Community Project, recently registered as a non-profit organisation after seven years of community service, has been working in the Northern Areas and Timothy Valley to tackle pressing issues ranging from road safety to youth rehabilitation and clinic transporta-
tion for the elderly. “We have been active for seven years, and we are finally registered as an NPO,” said Shelton Scheepers, executive director of the Ubuntu Community Project. “We provide support to community members who are vulnerable.” The organisation’s approach involves engaging local children in filling potholes throughout various areas, addressing both road safety concerns and providing structured activities for at-risk youth. Scheepers explains that road safety has become a critical issue in the community. “Our aim is to fill potholes because it is a big concern when it comes to the safety of residents and emergency vehicles,” he shared. “Many accidents occur because of unnecessary potholes, so without receiving any funding, we fill a pothole with gravel.” The initiative serves a dual purpose, as the organisation works to combat substance abuse and provide positive alternatives for local youth. The programme primarily involves boys aged nine to 17, with only two girls currently participating. “By being active in the community, we are stopping kids from using drugs and loitering,” Scheepers explained. “Children are so vulnerable, and we are sadly losing our children by the day.” Beyond pothole repairs, the Ubuntu Community Project provides community support services. The organisation assists the elderly and disabled with transport to clinics whilst running awareness programmes to address elderly abuse, child abuse and drug abuse. The NPO’s philosophy centres on instilling long-term positive behaviours in young participants. “If children are used to cleaning up their area, it won’t be a problem when they are adults,” Scheepers shared.

According to Scheepers, many of the children involved in the programme come from households facing economic hardship, with unemployed parents struggling to provide basic necessities. The organisation is actively seeking corporate partnerships to strengthen its operations and expand work development opportunities for youth, including car washing services. “The important thing is to save children’s lives to keep them from vandalism, drugs and negative activities,” Scheepers shared. “Children in the community are struggling because often they don’t have food or clothes. So, we are searching for companies to strengthen the organisation, to help the youth with work development.”
Extreme Models’top achievers The Extreme Models and Promotions modelling agency celebrated its 22nd annual year-end function, and its top achievers have been announced. The models were rewarded for their dedication and commitment towards the modelling industry for being consistent in everything they do, from Photographic, catwalk, most promising, most improved, to top achievers’ model of the year and much more. The top achievers from the modelling agency are Ziziphozethu Tili, Adri Maritz and Renata de Villiers. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Members of MJ’s Judo Dojo to represent SA in Japan
EP end tough girls’ week on a high note
MEMBERS of MJ’s Judo Dojo are set to compete in the 2025 SANIX International Juvenile Judo Team Championships in Japan, running from 22 to 29 December 2025.
HENK STEENKAMP THE Eastern Province under-16 Girls cricket squad will cherish this one for many years to come. They had a torrid time at the Cricket South Africa U/16 Girls’ Week, which was held at various venues in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas, but one match stood out above all. The EP Girls only managed to win one of their six matches when the event ended this past weekend, but what a special victory it was! They were involved in an absolute nail-biter in the match against Easterns, which was played at Woodridge College’s Rushmere field just outside Gqeberha. Easterns batted first and were bowled out for only 63 runs. Morgan de Souza (4/8), Asekho Gova (2/4) and Unakho Gitywa (2/5) were the bowling heroes for EP. The 64 runs required for victory looked like an easy task, but Easterns put the EP Girls under pressure with quality bowling. It took a huge effort and some cool heads, to get EP over the line. They reached the target with just one wicket remaining. Gitywa again played an important role in the victory, this time with the bat after having taken two valuable wickets with the ball. The all-rounder from Pearson High top-scored for EP with 16 valuable runs. She was well supported by Tana Sinclair with 15 runs. The EP Boys did very well at the U17 Rural Week in Mpumalanga. They won the Plate Final by beating North West by 157 runs. The Girls’ U/19 Week ends on Saturday in Potchefstroom and the Boys play their final match on Sunday in Bloemfontein.
