FRUSTRATION has reached boiling point for residents in parts of Lorraineand Kamma Park in Nelson Mandela Bay’s Ward8, where households have been without water for more than 21 days.
The areas mainly affected are Montmedy Road,Longwy Avenue,Sedan Avenue, BirdsongStreet and surrounding roads.

“I acknowledge thereisametrocrisis; however, in my ward, Lorraine, there is apartof Lorraine and Kamma Park that, for thelast threeweeks,beforethe flood, has been without waterfor 21 days,” he told council.
He addedthat the ongoing outages in Ward 8could not simply be blamedonthe recent floods affectingthe metro.

Zolani Sibeko, who was convictedof conspiracy to commit murder forhis role in the 2015 murder, is currently serving a15-year prison sentence.
Family attorney,Tania Koen, confirmed to the PE Express that the hearing had been rescheduled and that Jayde’s family would attend.
“Yes, the family will attend the parole hearing,whichhas been rescheduledto May 27,” Koen said.
While Koen did not comment on whether the family would oppose parole, apetition launched last year by Jayde’s sister, Toni Bridgett, appeared to reflect the family’s stanceonthe early release of violentoffenders.
The petition, titled Justicewithout Compromise: No Parole for Convicted Violent Offenders, calls for offenders convicted of crimes includingmurder, conspiracytocommit murder and robbery with aggravating circumstancesto serve their full court-imposedsentences withoutparole
According to the petition, early releasefor violent offendersundermines public confidence in the justice system and failstoreflect the long-term impact such crimes have on victims and their families.

Co-accused, SinethembaNenembe, was convicted of murderand robbery with aggravating circumstances, while Sibeko was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.
During the trial, the State relied on cellphonerecords, location data and witness testimonylinking the accused to the planning and executionofthe crime.
The courtfound that the evidencesupported the State’scase and rejected the explanations provided by the accused

Rautenbach also called foranindependent investigation panel to determine the root cause of theongoing failures.
Residents in the affected areas have increasingly taken to social media to voice anger and frustrationover the prolonged disruptions.
Oneresident wrote: “I have lived in the area for 15 years now. There have been more water outages in the last six months than in the previous 15years.”
Another resident commented:“Fix the infrastructure issue. We haveexcellent localengineersand contractors who can sort it out. This is unacceptable!”
Athird residentsuggested possible legal actionagainst the municipality, saying: “There is much talk about sovereign rights, human rightsand democratic rights. Maybe it’stime tocollectively focus our rights on legal action for negligenceaffecting sick, elderly, youth, societyingeneral, small business owners, larger businessentitiesand manufacturing.”
On Thursday, 14 May, Rautenbach said he had finally managed to getthe attention of Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe after what he described as a“long and relentless fight” on behalf of affected residents.
In asocial media post thatincluded ascreenshot of aWhatsApp conversation between Rautenbach and the mayor, Lobishe asked for details regarding the unattended water issues in the area. “I want to reassure the residents in Ward8 that Iwill continue fighting for them until this matter is resolved.”
Themunicipality has meanwhile continued issuing updates on recoveryefforts across the metro as infrastructure battles to recover from flooding, highturbidity levels and pump station failures.
In an update issued on Friday, 15 May, the municipality said the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works were still operating at reduced capacity,pumping approximately 180 megalitres of water per dayusing three high-lift pumps and two low-lift pumps.

under pressure, including Motherwell, Fairbridge and Churchill reservoirs,while pumpingand tanker operations continue in areas experiencing prolonged outages
Themunicipality saidthe Loerie Pump Station was operating at 60 megalitres butwould undergodesludgingoverthe weekend, with optimal operation expected to resume by Monday.
Despite ongoing challenges,the municipality saidrecoveryacross the system was steadily improving andexpressed hope that all residentswould have access to water againbythis week if current progresscontinued.
Last week, the metroalso confirmed that the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works had returned to operation following disruptions caused by high turbidity in rawwater supplies, although production remained below normal capacity.

Community members raised the alarm after visitingMissionvaleCemetery and other cemeteriesin Ward 31, where several gravesand tombstones were found broken, collapsed, or overgrown with weeds andgrass.
JulianJulies, president of the 1812 Movement, said hehad encountered widespreaddamage duringvisitstocemeteries on Monday.
“All those graves aredamaged and vandalised, it is very sadfor families to see that. The placehas also flooded,”heshared with the PE Express.
“OnTuesday, Isaw that some of the graves are fallingin. There is damagetoinfrastructure, the stones havecollapsed, andithas been vandalised.”
Julies said the lack of security and slowmunicipal response to complaints hadleft residentsfrustrated.
“Thereisnocaretaker here, and it is open, which means there is neglect fromthe municipality,” he said.
“The response is very slowwhen you report it to the municipality. Sometimes thereisno response, whichbrings alot of frustration to thecommunity.”
According to the NelsonMandela BayMunicipality, incidents involving theft, vandalism and damagetotombstones have increased over thepast two years.
In astatement issued on Wednesday, 13 May, themunicipality said it had intensified interventions to address cemetery vandalism and tombstone theftacross the metro.

Volunteersplant75treesinBethelsdorpenvironmentaldrive
YOUNG volunteers from ASEZ WAO took part in atree-planting initiative in Bethelsdorp,Nelson Mandela Bay, on Sunday, 10 May, as partofthe organisation’sglobal “Mother’s Forest” project aimed at addressing climate change.
The environmental campaign saw around 25 volunteers plant 75 saplings during atwo-hour activity focusedonexpanding green spaces and promoting environmental sustainability.
The “Mother’s Forest” project, led by ASEZ WAO —the young adult worker volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God —encourages communities worldwide to respond to climate change through tree plantingand theremoval of invasivespecies
According to ASEZ WAO, the initiative is inspired by “a mother’s heart” that seeks to protect the Earth and future generations.
“Protecting the environment begins with small actions, such as
planting asingle tree,”anASEZ WAO representative said.
“Youngpeople,who will lead futuregenerations,have taken part in tree planting to help build asustainable world. We will continue to collaborate with local communities
so that residents can enjoy acleaner and morepleasant environment.”
Volunteers spent the morning digging, planting saplings, covering them with soil and watering the trees.
Theinitiative received support
fromthe Department of Forestry, Fisheriesand the Environment and NelsonMandela University, which provided saplings and encouraged the volunteers.
Ward35councillor, Noeleen Moodley, praised the project, say-
ingthe trees would benefitresidents, particularly duringsummer when additional shade is needed in publicspaces.
Municipal horticulturist, Msimelelo Ngcaku, also welcomed the initiative and expressed interest in futurecollaboration with the organisation.
Volunteer,Lubabalo Zozi, saidhe was grateful for the opportunity to “practise Mother’s love through planting trees that will be beneficial to many residents and protect the environment.”
Another volunteer,Okuhle Mpahlwa, described the experience as “touching lives, one tree at atime” and saidshe was proud to contribute towards spreading hope duringthe climate crisis.
ASEZ WAO has previously conducted environmental campaigns and clean-up projects in Cape Town, Johannesburgand Tshwane, including tree-planting drives and supportinitiatives for healthcare workers and police officers.

In aFacebook post shared on 18 March, she spoke openly about her diagnosis and the progression of herillness,writing:
“I am so sorry that Ihave to putthisout thereonapublic forum, but it is happening so fast now thatI don't thinkI will have time to speaktoeveryone,” she wrote. “The tumour is 66cm in length alreadyand the cancer has spread to the lungs,nodes and other areas.”
Swain reflectedonher lifewith warmth and appreciation for those whohad been part of herjourney.
“I have had an absolutely gloriouslife, and Iwant to thank each and everyone of you for beingapart of it,” she wrote. “I have laughed,
Ihavecried, Ihavehad the pleasure of being aDrama Mamma to so many incredible souls… Ihave lived.”
Shespoke warmly of the people who had walkedalongside her journey, reflecting on joy, experience and connection.
“Please allcontinue to be kind, just be kind… that’s all thisworld so needs. And,of course, please continue to support my causeAACL,making adifferencetothose who cannotspeakfor themselves.”
Herwords reflectthe positivity and gratitude thatdefined her work in animal welfare and drama education.

“Our hearts are shattered,” the organisationsaid,adding that her spirit would remain with them as they continued the work she championed.
SPCAUitenhageremembered her as “a trulyincredible animal rescuer, advocate and
activist forthe animals of Nelson Mandela Bay”.
Cat Care Port Elizabeth described her as a “compassionate voicefor those who could not speak for themselves”, praising her courage, kindness and dedication. Her influence also extended deeply into education.
Pearson High School said she had devoted herself to drama education since joining the school in 2009, shaping generations of learners throughher passionfor the arts.
ClarendonParkPrimarySchool described her as a“legendary drama educator” who mentored and guided countless pupils over the years.
Both schools said she created spaces of creativity, confidence and expression, leaving a lasting legacy in the classroomand beyond.
Her family expressed gratitude for the support shown during her final months, saying it had been moving to witness thelove and impact she had on so many lives.
They described her life as full, meaningful and guided by compassion,adventure and generosity.

Accordingtothe latest figures, SA’sofficial unemployment rate increased from 31.4% to 32.7% during the first quarter of 2026, after more than 345,000 jobs were lost nationally.
Youth unemployment among people aged 15 to 34 now stands at approximately 45.8%
The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Chief ExecutiveOfficer, Denise van Huyssteen, said that Nelson Mandela Bay’s unemployment raterose from 28.2% to 29.8% during the first quarter of 2026, despite the metrorecordingamodest increaseofaround 4,000jobs quarter-on-quarter.
“We cannot buildasustainable and inclusive economy while nearly half of our young people remain unemployed. Youth
unemployment is not only an economic issue; it is asocial crisisthat impacts dignity, social cohesion and futuregrowth prospects,”she said.
Van Huyssteen said long-term employment trends in Nelson Mandela Bay also remain concerning, with the proportion of working-ageresidents who are employed declining from 45.3% in 2015 to 39.8% in 2026.
She added that labour forceparticipation in the metro has dropped from 67.6% to 56.7%over the same period, indicating that many people have become discouraged and disengaged from the economy. The Chamber further highlighted that the Eastern Capelost 43,000 jobs in asingle quarter, contributing to aprovincial unemployment rate of 44.6%.

According to Census 2022 figures cited by the DA, Nelson Mandela Bay’s population consists of 62.7% black residents, 19.2% coloured residents, 15.7% white residents and 1.2% AsianorIndianresidents.

The Economic Freedom Fighters responded to the latestlabour statistics, describing the unemployment figures as evidence of deepening poverty, hunger and economic collapse.
In astatement, the EFF said unemployment has remained above 30% for more than five consecutive years and warned that women and black youth in townships and rural communities continue to bear the heaviest burden of economic exclusion.
The EFF also linked unemployment to rising electricity tariffs, fuel prices, transport costs and food prices, arguing that millions of employed SouthAfricans are still unable to meet basic living costs.
