Accused still chooses to represent himself SHANTI JAFTA ACCUSED Donovan “Poenie” Williams (48), one of Gqeberha’s most wanted fugitives, still intends to represent himself despite having no formal legal background, as he and co-accused Irvincia Basson (42) briefly appeared before the Gqeberha Regional Court on Wednesday, 30 September, facing 18 counts of serious offences. The presiding magistrate reminded Williams again of the danger of representing himself without any formal legal background. When asked why he intends to represent himself, Williams said, “I want to represent myself, because I think it's my Constitutional right.” When warned that should he fail to represent himself, he will be facing a long prison sentence, he confirmed that he understood. According to the charge sheet, the preamble to the charges states that the accused allegedly engaged in a pattern of conduct where they either personally or through the assistance of others familiarised themselves with the financial circumstances of victims, targeting them with the intention of obtaining unlawful financial benefit from them. “The State further alleges that pursuant to this conduct, the accused unlawfully and intentionally caused the deaths of the victims.” The charge sheet added that “the accused subsequently uti-

and to make various point of sale purchases.” The accused share several of-

fences, with more faced by Williams than by Basson. The pair share eight counts of

murder, five counts of conspiracy to commit murder, and four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Williams alone faces unlawful possession of a firearm with intent to commit an offence, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, fraud, forgery and uttering. The pair are linked to the murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit the murder of Loay Khayat, Quinton “Doenas” Plaatjies, Earl Classen, Clarisa Swart, Isaac Moses and Merlyn Alkenstead, who went missing between 2020 and 2025. The charge sheet stated the discretionary minimum sentence for the murder counts is life imprisonment in the case of a first offender. “Robbery with aggravating circumstances is no less than 15 years for a first offender, no less than 20 years imprisonment for a second offender and no less than 25 years imprisonment for a third or subsequent offender.” It added the penalty clauses, stating that “possession of a firearm with intent to commit a crime is imprisonment for a period not exceeding 25 years. Unlawful firearm possession is imprisonment for a period not exceeding 15 years and unlawful possession of ammunition is imprisonment for a period not exceeding 15 years.” The matter was remanded until today, 7 October, for further investigation. The suspects will remain in custody.

Bulldozers tear through Airport Valley homes NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT AND ALULUTHO MADOLO WITHIN less than a minute, the place Nwabisa Yamiso had called home for four years lay in ruins, her belongings scattered on the ground as municipal officials and SAPS members looked on. Just moments earlier, mattresses, couches, cupboards, clothing and other possessions had been hurriedly carried out as a bulldozer moved towards her informal structure. Seconds later, the machine tore through the roof and walls, reducing the structure to rubble. Yamiso said she had lived in the informal structure for four years and had not received notice that it would be demolished. “We did not even receive a notice that the houses were going to be demolished, and some of our neighbours are even at work. They are not even waiting for them to come back from work,” Yamiso said. “I am not happy about this, and what is sad is that the conditions where they are transferring us are bad. There are no roofs, windows or doors in those houses.” Lusanda Tutu, whose informal structure was also demolished, said she had lived in Airport Valley since 2023. “The worst part is that we were not given any notice. They just arrived and demolished,” she said. Tutu said she would have to look for a place to rent because she no longer had anywhere to live. Residents scrambled to remove what they could before the bulldozer tore through their informal structures, leaving belongings scattered across the ground and the remains of what had been their homes. Angry shouts of “I’m not voting!” echoed across Airport Valley as residents voiced their frustration over the demolitions and relocation.

A large police presence was at the scene in Airport Valley, where residents and their belongings were removed. PHOTOS: NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT Community leader Mara Payi, who has lived in the area for more than three years, said some residents only became aware that demolitions were going ahead on Wednesday, 23 September. “There is a court order which prohibits them from demolishing our houses. Nevertheless, they are doing it. We have made every effort and told them what is on the books to prevent them, but they are so determined to go ahead and demolish our houses,” Payi said. “We must take into account that there are kids living here and vulnerable women who live alone. This is going to cause a very big effect on them. Police are fully armed against people who are unarmed.” In a statement on Monday, 28 September, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said approximately 125 people had already relocated to a nearby safe area, where they were accommodated in temporary houses. The municipality said it had assisted 39 ad-

200-year-old church bell stolen NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT A HISTORIC church bell that has been part of Bethelsdorp for more than 200 years is at the centre of an appeal to have it safely returned after it was stolen. The historic bell was discovered missing from the Bethelsdorp Congregational Church on Tuesday afternoon. Church deacon, Rosaline Norkie, who opens the church for services, funerals and other events, said she realised the bell was gone while closing the church after cleaning the bathrooms. “I’m in charge of keeping the church clean,” she explained. “You never think that something like this would happen.” Norkie, who has lived in Bethelsdorp for 25 years, said she was praying that the bell would be returned. “We are hopeful and pray that someone would return the bell in the original state that it was.” The bell bears the date 1815 and, according

to Norkie, has stood at the entrance to the church for generations. “The bell has been here since 1815; that is the date engraved on it,” she said. “Previously the bell was used to bring the community together for church services, weddings and funerals. It is part of our history.” Norkie said the bell dated back to the time of missionary Johannes van der Kemp, when Bethelsdorp was a mission station. Over the years, the role of the bell gradually changed. While it once served primarily as a means of communication and community mobilisation, it has since become closely associated with the life of the church and the community. “It is therefore more than just a bell; it is a reminder of the history, traditions, unity and shared experiences of the community,” Norkie said. For the Love of Nature, a local hiking and nature group, has also expressed concern over the theft. “Some things are priceless. And once they’re gone, they’re gone,” the organisation said in a social media post. Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance has offered a R20,000 cash reward for information leading to the safe return of the bell. DA Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate, Retief Odendaal, said it was deeply disappointing to learn that the bell has been stolen from Bethelsdorp Congregational Church “Last week, I visited Van der Kemp’s Kloof and stood among some of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most important heritage treasures. I spoke about how much potential this precinct has to become a real heritage tourism destination for Bethelsdorp, a place that tells our history, attracts visitors and creates opportunities for local communities,” he said in a social media post. “This is not simply a piece of metal. It is part of the story of Bethelsdorp and a physical link to the history of this community.” Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, confirmed that a case of theft has been opened. Anyone with information about the theft, or who is approached to buy or sell the bell, is asked to contact Sergeant Kechia Erasmus on 072 388 7202, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information via the MySAPS App.

ditional residents with “consensual demolition and relocation” to the temporary site. The 445-unit Airport Valley housing development had been delayed for more than three years due to resistance from some residents, the municipality said, adding that some of

those resisting were not beneficiaries of the development. “The municipality would like to put it on record that the process is a legal relocation process, not a forced removal,” the statement said. The municipality expressed its gratitude to residents who had cooperated with the relocation process. It also condemned the actions of some residents who, it said, intimidated housing beneficiaries and provided them with incorrect information about the development, resulting in confusion and frustration. Once the relocation process is completed, the municipality said it would “swiftly develop the sites and install services” in preparation for construction of the top structures. The municipality said it had been forced to return funding to National Treasury during the past financial year because of delays in the relocation process. It urged the remaining residents to allow the project to proceed, citing Nelson Mandela Bay’s housing backlog of approximately 100,000 units. “Every effort needs to be made to ensure that planned housing developments are implemented without unnecessary delays,” the municipality said.

NMBM invests millions to support SMME Digital Transformation THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NBMB) has invested R12 million in a three-year partnership with the Pan African Information Communication Technology Association (PAICTA) to support, upskill and guide small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) owners and leaders in digital skills, innovation and enterprise support. As part of this investment, on Thursday, 17 September 2026, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Councillor Bassie Kamana, opened a support centre that will assist SMMEs in improving their digital skills, web development and

entrepreneurship skills. PAICTA is a United Nations-accredited Artificial Intelligence organisation. It offers a comprehensive portfolio of professional services designed to support digital transformation, innovation and skills development across Africa’s public and private sectors. It focuses on partnerships with municipalities and the public sector on development and innovation, academics and research, support for informal traders such as spaza shop owners, and opportunities and skills development for youth in the AI industry. Speaking at the official opening of the support centre, MMC Kamana said the commitment made by Nelson Mandela Bay

Municipality responds to the fast-moving digital world and the need for the active participation and beneficiation of all, with a special focus on youth and SMMEs. “As the world develops, we do not want our people to be left behind. We need to be on par with the ever-developing world. Upskilling and entrenching our SMME digital presence becomes critical,” said MMC Kamana. Part of the official opening of the centre included a workshop hosted by the Municipality to give SMMEs an opportunity to receive procurement training from different government entities, including the SANRAL Transformation Department and the Municipality’s Supply Chain Manage-

ment. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, said SMME and local economic development support is a foundation of the City’s economic development strategy. “We understand that for us to achieve our goals of creating jobs, SMME and local economic support is critical, as these sectors are the biggest employers. It is therefore critical that the Municipality invests in digital upskilling and entrepreneurial support,” said Executive Mayor Lobishe. The partnership will also assist SMMEs in developing digital skills to enhance their businesses, with a particular focus on young people.

Harington addresses past as he sets out mayoral vision for NMB ESMI WINDWAAI THE past of Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate, Bill Harington, has come under renewed scrutiny following his nomination for the 2026 local government elections. Harington was convicted of the murder of ANC activist, Mbongeni Jama, who was killed on 24 February 1991 at or near Elandskop. According to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) official Amnesty Committee record, Harington and two co-accused were convicted of Jama’s murder and initially sentenced to eight, six and eight years’ imprisonment respectively. On appeal, Harington’s sentence was increased to 18 years’ imprisonment. Harington subsequently applied for amnesty under the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act. The official TRC transcript records that he gave evidence under oath during an amnesty hearing in Pietermaritzburg in February 1997. The Amnesty Committee later refused the applications. Harington said he understood why residents might have questions about his past and had never tried to hide it. “I understand completely that residents may have questions about my past. I do not expect anybody to ignore it, and I have never tried to hide it. I made serious mistakes in my younger years; I was convicted, I accepted responsibility, and I served my sentence. That part of my life is part of my history, but it is not the entirety of who I am today,” he said. Harington joined the police service at 18 years old, straight out of school. After his release in 2003, he said he built a career in transport, distribution, sales, warehousing and occupational health and safety. He became a husband and father, committed his life to Christ and eventually entered public service. “My life has not followed a perfect straight line. I believe the experiences, including the difficult ones, have helped shape the person I am today. I am not asking anyone to forget my past. I am asking them to consider the whole story,” he said.

The VF Plus was aware of his conviction when he joined the party. Experience in local government Harington has served on the Nelson Mandela Bay Council since 2021, including as Chief Whip of Council from 21 September 2022 to 26 May 2023 during the coalition period. He currently serves as VF Plus caucus leader. “I have experienced municipal government from the inside. I have seen both what can be achieved when political parties cooperate and what happens when political interests, poor administration and a lack of accountability get in the way of service delivery,” he said. The VF Plus is offering a government focused on competent service delivery, accountability, financial discipline, economic growth and the protection of every resident’s rights. Why he wants to be mayor Harington said he was putting himself forward because he believed Nelson Mandela Bay needed a stronger focus on basic municipal services, accountability and restoring residents’ trust. “I am not putting myself forward because I believe a mayor should simply occupy an office. I am doing it because I believe Nelson Mandela Bay needs a stronger focus on the basics,” Harington said. “If elected, my approach would focus on stronger accountability for officials, proper consequence management, better financial discipline and measurable targets for service delivery. We need clean governance, functioning infrastructure, reliable water and electricity, safer communities, proper financial management and an environment in which businesses can invest and create employment opportunities,” he said. The VF Plus does not claim to have all the answers, Harington said, but is prepared to take responsibility, listen to residents and work with anyone who sincerely wants to rebuild NMB. Community involvement Harington’s community clean-up initiatives have focused on illegal dumping and neglected public spaces. “My involvement is rooted in the belief that

Bill Harington poses outside the Nelson Mandela Bay municipal building in Gqeberha. PHOTO:SUPPLIED residents should not have to accept dirty, neglected public spaces as normal,” Harington said. He further explained that addressing illegal dumping requires enforcement, education and reliable municipal services, with consequences for those who dump waste illegally and accessible disposal alternatives for residents. Economy and unemployment Harington said NMB had significant potential because of its port, industrial capacity, tourism assets, universities, businesses and communities. “Our challenge is to ensure that municipal government creates an environment in which those assets can flourish rather than becoming an obstacle,” he said. Harington acknowledged that a municipality could not simply create enough permanent jobs but said it had to create the conditions in which the private sector, entrepreneurs and investors could create sustainable employment. His approach includes making NMB attractive to investors through reliable utilities and faster municipal processes, reducing unnecessary red tape and pursuing a structured investment programme that actively approaches investors in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, the automotive industry, tourism, agriculture, renewable energy and the harbour economy. He also stressed proper management of municipal procurement and infrastructure

spending, and connecting young people with opportunities through skills development, apprenticeships, internships and partnerships with businesses and training institutions. Nationally, South Africa lost 95,000 formal non-agricultural sector jobs between June 2025 and June 2026, according to Statistics South Africa. Harington said this showed how municipalities must create a local environment that supports rather than discourages economic activity. Working across party lines Harington said you cannot govern a diverse municipality like Nelson Mandela Bay by expecting everyone to agree with you. He believes in cooperation where it serves residents, while remaining firm on VF Plus principles. As a councillor, “I already worked with people from different political parties. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree strongly. That is democracy,” he said. He said he would support proposals from any party that improve water provision, roads, electricity, financial management, safety or economic development, while opposing decisions harmful to residents or contrary to VF Plus principles. “Coalition or multi-party government should not mean that parties surrender their identities or principles. It should mean that we find common ground where possible, negotiate honestly, respect one another and put the interests of Nelson Mandela Bay residents first,” Harington added.

Gelvandale High educator recognised for excellence FOR Danielle Nicholas, teaching is about more than examination results.

Honours degree in English Studies, began teaching at Gelvandale High. Nicholas believes effective teaching requires understanding learners’ different needs, abilities and learning styles. “Success comes through hard work and careful consideration of the teaching strategies best suited to learners, both collectively and individually,” she explains. She uses real-world examples to help learners engage with literary works by William Shakespeare and W. B. Yeats. This year, she introduced motivational sessions called Story Time with Miss Nicholas, which she says have been well received, with improvements in learners’ focus and commitment to their studies. At a school drawing learners from across Nelson Mandela Bay, many of whom do not speak English as their first language, Nicholas emphasises the importance of developing communication skills to improve academic performance and access future opportunities. One learner’s experience illus-

After 16 years at Gelvandale High School, the English Home Language educator believes her greatest reward is seeing learners gain confidence, overcome challenges and discover their potential. Her dedication has recently been recognised with an MEC Excellence Award for outstanding academic performance in English Home Language. “My primary aim has always been to help learners succeed,” she says. Nicholas’s journey into teaching was not straightforward. After matriculating, she initially pursued an LLB degree but realised law was not the right career for her. She then worked as an administrative clerk at a retail company for six years. During this time, visits to a nearby library during lunch and tea breaks rekindled her love of literature. She pursued a degree in English and, after completing her

trates her approach. Despite his writing ability, he had repeated several grades, with peer pressure and academic setbacks affecting his progress. Recognising his talent, Nicholas asked his permission to read some of his essays to the class. The positive feedback from his peers helped build his confidence, and he gradually applied himself more diligently. He eventually achieved a Bachelor’s Pass in the National Senior Certificate examination. “When learners feel supported and know that someone believes in them, they begin to believe in themselves,” she says. “Teaching is truly a work of heart.” For Nicholas, the rewards of teaching extend beyond the classroom. Former learners have returned to thank her for their support, with some becoming the first in their families to attend university. Others have credited their grounding in English with helping them excel in their studies.

She wants learners to recognise their abilities, set meaningful goals and communicate confidently. “Each person has unique gifts to share,” she says, adding that even seemingly small gifts can profoundly affect others. She hopes stronger English skills will help learners access opportunities and share their perspectives with the wider world. Nicholas also acknowledges her colleagues’ dedication to supporting learners despite difficult circumstances. She credits the school’s educators, management team and other stakeholders for working towards a shared vision, reflected in the school motto, Ad Astra, meaning “to the stars”. Her message to aspiring educators reflects her belief in the lasting influence teachers can have on young lives. “I firmly believe that teaching is a calling and truly a work of heart,” she says. “Sometimes a lesson is far more than a lesson; it can be life changing.”

Foundation turns abandoned house into recycling hub ALULUTHO MADOLO AN ABANDONED house in Zwide that became a drug den, has been transformed by Gqeberha Fountain of Hope NPC into a recycling hub led by young women and youth, offering hope to a community plagued by substance abuse and illegal dumping. The organisation was founded in 2024 to support the Community Blue Patrollers under KwaZakhele SAPS, providing working gear and stipends for underprivileged people safeguarding the area. It works in partnership with KwaZakhele Police Station. Its mission is to bring hope and practical solutions to communities affected by substance abuse, gender-based violence and environmental degradation through partnerships, programmes and action. Fundisani Nxoko, the founder and director of the foundation, said, “The

house became a hideout for drug smokers, with cigarette butts, drug paraphernalia and overgrown vegetation making the area a no-go zone, especially after dark when poor street lighting left it dangerous. “It was smelly, attracting criminals, and it was a bushy house with poor street lighting at night someone wouldn’t pass there.” He said schoolchildren were allegedly among those using the house, slipping through a hole they had cut in the school’s security fence to reach it. “Residents tipped off the foundation’s community patrollers, who regularly inspected the property for illegal activity after the organisation formed its own patrol unit in 2024,” said Nxoko. He added that volunteers cleaned the site on 21 September and began converting it into a recycling hub. Eighty per cent of the volunteers

were young women. “As an organisation, we saw an opportunity to turn a problem into a solution. Reclaiming the house and tackling the dumping will make the area clean and safe while creating jobs through recycling,” said Nxoko. The hub now serves as a buy-back centre where residents can sell waste, a planned training centre for waste entrepreneurship, and a base for township clean-up and greening projects. “It is a women- and youth-led operation, with the team handling collection, sorting, baling, door-to-door awareness and eventually running training programmes,” Nxoko added. “Participants will gain skills in waste sorting and grading, baling, business management, SAWIS compliance, health and safety, community engagement and greening. “The community has been support-

support the project by bringing recyclables, including white paper and plastic, and donating bulk bags, scales, fencing and trolleys.

IINGCAMBU CERAMIC EXHIBITION:

Four voices, moulded by common roots HEIDI BOTHA THE Alliance Française is currently hosting the iiNgcambu Ceramic Exhibition, featuring the works of four artists: Amanda Heshu, Nomabaso Bedeshe, Ayanda Mji and Sinethemba Xola. Connected by their beginnings at Nelson Mandela University and deeply rooted in their shared love of clay, friendship, place and heritage, this exhibition displays the divergent forms that unfolded from the hands of these four individual artists. The Xhosa word iingcambu refers to both physical and symbolic roots, and, much like clay, heritage too carries ever-evolving stories and memories while remaining connected to its beginnings. The bodies of work speak of freedom found in vulnerability, but also of strength and resilience, healing and cultural preservation, and, ultimately, of the varied ways in which heritage finds expression through the pieces and the unique relationship between each artist and the forms they bring forth.

EP Clivia Club gears up for annual show THE Eastern Province Clivia Club is set to host its annual show and plant sale on 10 and 11 October at the Fairview Sports Centre in Willow Road. Preserving a local treasure The club's primary aim is to promote the growing of clivias and to preserve these plants for future generations. Most people know the clivia as a striking orange "African lily", but this is far from the only species in the family. The Eastern Cape has its own local species, Clivia nobilis, with others including C. miniata, C. gardenii, C. caulescens, C. robusta and C. mirabilis found across the country. Unfortunately, the plant has already reached endangered status. Clivias are easy to grow because they require very little maintenance. They can be easily propagated from seed or by separating offshoots and thrive in places where most plants battle – shady areas under trees are ideal. Clivias are also water-wise plants. In nature, yellow, orange and a few other shades can be found. Through hybridisation, this has led to a wide variety of colours — peach, apricot, pastel, bi-colour, red, bronze, green and more. By crossing different species, inter-

esting flower forms and colour patterns have been developed. What to expect at the show The Eastern Province Clivia Club's annual show will take place on Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and on Sunday from 09:00 to 14:00. Members of the club are looking forward to sharing their knowledge at the show and teaching visitors how to ensure the future of this local plant and help conserve part of South Africa's floral heritage. Talks on growing clivias will take place on Saturday at 11:00 and 15:00, and again on Sunday at 11:00. If you cannot make these times, someone will be on hand to assist you, and experts will be available to help with any specific problems. Local growers will have a variety of plants for sale. The entry fee is R10, with children under 12 admitted free. The first 20 visitors on each day will receive a packet of mixed seeds and a special clivia seedling as a gift. There will also be literature for sale and a raffle with various plants as prizes — including a flowering green clivia. For more info, contact Emile on 079 506 6878, Charl on 082 851 2217 or Willie on 072 199 4839.

The four artists Finding her inspiration in natural forms, Amanda Heshu, ceramic artist and museum educator at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art

Museum, creates organic structural shapes. Centring on the memory-retaining nature of clay, her intuitive creative process involves celebrating imperfections. For full-time ceramic artist, Sinethemba Xola, working with clay extends beyond being merely a medium. To him, the creative process involves a complete immersion in pottery during which he is entirely captured and captivated by his work, offering him absolute artistic clarity. Rooted in the post-colonial South African experience, he draws inspiration from the detailed doily patterns of township homes, weaving the quiet threads of domestic memory, silence and spirituality into sculptural shapes. For Ayanda Mji, a multidisciplinary artist working across ceramics and painting, art serves as an intimate space for renewal and creative freedom. With healing and empowerment at the heart of her craft, she uses her art as a tool for cultural preservation and community development. Traditional Xhosa-inspired patterns, Xhosa attire (imibhaco) and traditional dotted facial patterns (ukuchokoza) abound in her work, reflecting her deep connection to her roots and community, 'My People' (Abantu Bam). Ceramic artist, Nomabaso Be-

deshe, is currently serving as chief curator at the Red Location Gallery and is deeply invested in her community and background. With her practice strongly embedded in her Xhosa heritage and upbringing, Nomabaso explores ideas of identity, belonging and community traditions through her craft. A shared message Rooted in clay, heritage and memory, these four artists weave together a message that will linger within the Alliance's exhibition space and resonate far beyond it. Their works speak to cultural roots that run deep, heritage that endures and individual creative practices that have the capacity to give rise to many new shapes nourished by the same source. They remind us of the importance of honouring the roots that continue to shape who we are. The exhibition will run until 17 October and can be viewed Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, at the Alliance Française, 17 Mackay Street, Richmond Hill. A ceramic workshop will take place on Saturday, 10 October, from 10:30 to 12:00. The workshop costs R300 and will be led by the four exhibiting artists. For more information, visit the Alliance's website at www.afportelizabeth.com.

siastic about living a healthy lifestyle through sport and a positive lifestyle through life skills. Dayimani said children took part in soccer and netball, with the aim of searching for raw sports talent. Dayimani said, “Our programmes are not only focused on sporting activities. Through our programmes, we equip children with education focusing on some life skills. We mainly focus on fostering the upliftment of children by teaching them to take education seriously and to refrain from criminal activities.” According to Dayimani, 123 children were given entry forms. Dayimani stated that the children from the ages of seven to 13 participated in their programmes free of charge, but participation was strictly restricted to those who had submitted fully completed forms supplied before schools were closed in September. Dayimani commended her 10 coaches and the intern Liyema Hogan for their unwavering contribution during the Sporting Chance programmes.
