Sandile gets new lease on mobility A heartfelt wish for a motorised wheelchair has become a reality for Bay resident Sandile Msizi. The wheels were set in motion when Simone Jucker, who met Msizi through the Walmer Methodist Church community many years ago, saw the appeal on social media and decided to get involved. A Back-a-Buddy campaign was launched with a target of R35,000. By Monday, 21 September, Msizi was at CE Mobility to collect the new motorised wheelchair. Read the full story on page 5. DA puts crime and public safety at centre of NMB campaign DEMOCRATIC Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has placed crime and public safety at the centre of the party’s Nelson Mandela Bay campaign, with plans to expand the metro police force and spend R100 million on the revitalisation of St George’s Park. Hill-Lewis was speaking at the DA’s Working For All Tour event in Gqeberha on Monday, 21 September, ahead of the November local government elections. He said municipalities had an important role to play in creating safer communities, despite not being responsible for the South African Police Service (SAPS). “I know from my own job as a mayor that local government is not abstract,” Hill-Lewis said, pointing to services such as working streetlights, maintained parks and refuse collection. “The crime problem in Nelson Mandela Bay is not theoretical,” he said.
Hill-Lewis referred to murder figures for January to March, when KwaZakhele recorded 59 murders, the highest number at a police precinct nationally during that quarter. The figures formed part of the fourth-quarter crime statistics for the 2025/26 financial year, released by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia on 22 May. SAPS figures show New Brighton recorded 45 murders during the same period, followed by Motherwell with 44, Walmer with 36 and KwaNobuhle with 35. The five Nelson Mandela Bay precincts were among the 13 police stations with the highest number of murders nationally during that quarter. The latest national crime statistics, covering April to June, were released on 28 August. Hill-Lewis’s figures therefore relate to the previous quarter. He criticised the national government’s response to gang-related crime and referred to Cachalia’s visit to Nelson Mandela Bay in Jan-
uary. “Residents deserve to know: Where is the plan, where are the resources, and where are the results?” Hill-Lewis said. He said DA Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Retief Odendaal, had called for specialised police units to be properly resourced, crime intelligence to be restored and a permanent Joint Operations Centre to be established. “While a municipality cannot replace the SAPS, it is not powerless,” Hill-Lewis said. The DA’s proposals include expanding the metro police force to more than 500 officers, supported by more than 60 vehicles. The party also plans to rebuild the city’s CCTV capability and establish a joint operations centre where Metro Police, SAPS and private security companies can share information and coordinate responses. Hill-Lewis said technology such as gunshot detection could also be used where it could make a practical difference.
St George’s Park was another key focus of the party’s plans. The DA has proposed spending R100 million on the park, including improved lighting, CCTV, emergency call points, security and a ranger service. The proposal also includes repairs to pathways and sporting facilities, improvements to the swimming pool and work on facilities including the Mannville Open Air Theatre and Pearson Conservatory. Hill-Lewis said the plan was intended to make the park safer while encouraging residents to use it again. “The safest public space is often a public space that is loved and used,” he said. The DA’s proposals form part of its campaign ahead of the 4 November elections, with Hill-Lewis saying the metro’s port, industry, university and tourism sector provided a foundation for future development. He said the challenge was creating the conditions for those assets and communities to flourish.
ANC campaign trail hits KwaZakhele with community engagement ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe, along with the Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, conducted the campaign trail in the Nelson Mandela Region in KwaZakhele on 20 September. They visited St Barnabas Church and held a community engagement. Speaking during the engagement, Mantashe urged party members to campaign by reminding people of what the ANC has achieved, saying members should not be ashamed of the party’s record. He called on members to highlight the ANC’s social welfare policies when engaging with the community door-todoor. He pointed to the introduction of the support grant, which did not exist before. He also addressed the concept of “no-fee schools,” clarifying that there is no such thing. “It is a fee school; it is just that the schools are not paid for by the parents, they are paid for by the government. That is a policy of the African National Congress,” he said.
Mantashe pointed to the Fees Must Fall protests as a key moment for access to higher education. “People protested, saying fees must fall, and out of that they were given NSFAS and placed in universities, although they came from disadvantaged backgrounds.” On housing, Mantashe said RDP houses were built for people subjected to forced removals. He acknowledged criticism that the houses are small but explained the design reasoning. “The houses are small because the first Minister of Human Resources, Joe Slovo, gave people basic structures with a big yard so that when they have money, they can extend the houses.” He said the ANC has built and handed over 4.9 million houses. Community members raised questions and complaints during the engagement. Mayor Babalwa Lobishe addressed several issues, including recreational parks, rates collection, gender-based violence, and crime.
On recreational parks, Lobishe responded to concerns about why the municipality builds parks it cannot maintain.“Parks were built and handed over to the community. It is the community’s responsibility to guard the asset because it belongs to you as a community.” Lobishe pointed to unpaid rates and illegal electricity connections as factors limiting the municipal budget. “There is one thing that is limiting our budget; it is caused by the community when it is not paying their rates. If we were to take your addresses now, there is a possibility that 99% of people here are using electricity illegally,” she said. “They are not paying rates, but daily they want something. The municipality’s responsibility is to collect the rates. We do want to do more, but the community must also assist us.”
On gender-based violence, Lobishe said it has been declared a national disaster. She added that the municipality plans to hold sessions next month aimed at empowering communities on how to deal with GBV across all six clusters of the metro. Regarding crime, Lobishe said the municipality has a plan working alongside the police. “We do have a plan with the police, as you can see that Metro police oftentimes go along with the police,” she said. She noted that last year the municipality fixed a surveillance vehicle. “We, as the municipality, do have a surveillance vehicle that we can survey with and see what is happening around each area,” she said. Lobishe outlined plans for October to install lighting, cameras, and Wi-Fi in the area.

Community rallies to give Sandile a new lease on mobility NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT FROM an appeal for help on social media to a Back-a-Buddy campaign to raise funds for a motorised wheelchair, a heartfelt wish has become a reality for Sandile Msizi. The PE Express first reported on Msizi’s need for a motorised wheelchair on 12 August, after he appealed for help with the challenges he faced carrying out everyday tasks such as shopping for food and running errands. The wheels were set in motion when Simone Jucker, who met Msizi through the Walmer Methodist Church community many years ago, saw the appeal on social media and decided to get involved. “It must have been around high school, many years ago, that Sandile was part of our church,” Jucker shared. “He used to
live in Walmer township and has since moved to Motherwell.” Although it had been years since they were in touch, Jucker said Msizi was remembered as a happy person who radiated joy. “I remembered him as the happiest, most wonderful person.” She continued: “I saw the social media post, shared it, and then friends from Walmer Methodist days were like, ‘How can we help?’” After reaching out to Msizi, Jucker said he asked for assistance in raising funds. “It was this whole group effort, and I’m just so happy for him that everything has come together so quickly and it’s literally going to change his life.” A Back-a-Buddy campaign was launched with a target of R35,000. Reflecting on the community effort, Jucker added, “I think it’s heartwarming;
thanks to everyone who assisted. He really battles with his one arm, so this is going to be life-changing for him.” PE Express reader, Barry Allen, whose daughter has a disability and attends Aurora Special School, was also moved to help after reading about Msizi’s situation. “When I read your article, I assumed that I could organise a wheelchair for him, not necessarily a motorised one but a manual one. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any luck, so I thought I would do it myself.” Allen had never met Msizi but said he was moved to help after reading about his situation. “My daughter is disabled, and you just realise how unfriendly the world is. We’re not a disabled-friendly country, and it is a big challenge,” he shared. “I harassed my friends and everyone I knew who had money, and we got here somehow.”
A number of the donations were made anonymously. “My daughter has a motorised wheelchair, so I’m looking forward to Sandile having his wheelchair and I hope it makes a big difference to him.” The fundraising target was exceeded, with R35,400 raised towards Msizi’s new wheelchair. By Monday, 21 September, the PE Express joined Msizi, Jucker and Allen at CE Mobility to collect the new motorised wheelchair. “I suppose it is that starfish story of: ‘What can I do?’ Just start with one. I think that is the biggest thing. Start with changing one person’s life. That is amazing,” said Jucker. Msizi was excited to receive his life-changing motorised wheelchair. “I want to thank everyone who helped me. I’m so happy,” he exclaimed.
Major windfall for hospice helping ill kids live their best lives NORTHWOOD Children’s Hospice is driven by the philosophy that everyone has the right to live their best lives. The Nelson Mandela Bay facility assists young people presenting with life-limiting illnesses clinically, therapeutically and emotionally. The hospice, spread across No 6 and No 9 Northwood Road in Gqeberha, also walks alongside the children’s loved ones, supporting them at every stage of their journey. Maureen Lamb started Northwood in 2009, growing out of St Francis Hospice’s community work. Its goal is to provide pain and symptom management, home-based care, nutritional support and bereavement counselling to children and their families. The hospice also houses special-needs educational support and skills develop-
ment programmes, which have helped more than 1,200 children and 800 young people. These include accredited healthcare and caregiving courses for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Northwood is one of two non-profits that will receive R50,000 apiece from SPAR Eastern Cape as beneficiaries of its 2026 Women’s Challenge, which takes place at Pollok Beach in the city on 26 September. The donation comes at the perfect time, as the facility is building a 30-bed, threewing paediatric palliative care section. This includes inpatient wards, private rooms, family accommodation, therapy and training facilities as well as a pharmacy, memorial garden and chapel. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful gift,” Lamb said of the windfall from the women’s-on-
ly event, now in its 33rd year. “Money doesn’t fall from the sky. We need to take hold of that to honour them and the people we care for.” Lamb also thanked all the participants supporting the event, as none of it would be possible without them. SPAR Eastern Cape sponsorship manager, Honey Koba, said the decision to support Northwood had been easy. “We believe their holistic support is very important because families go through things no family should go through alone.” Koba said the Women’s Challenge was not just about celebrating women; it also applauded organisations like Northwood. The hospice is in the throes of offering ancillary nurse training with courses such as anatomy, physiology and hygiene.
“If they are capable of more, we would like to take them to the next level,” Lamb said. Northwood’s reach extends well beyond its own gates. It supports three crèches collectively looking after 150 children. It also runs an annual winter campaign that donates more than 600 parcels of warm clothing and blankets to families. In addition, each Christmas the organisation’s Smiley Box initiative brings clothing, porridge and small treats to more than 500 children between the ages of three and fifteen. “Through the grace of many volunteers, donors and churches, we are able to deliver the boxes to the many referred names handed to us,” Lamb said. To date, Northwood has impacted the lives of over 7,200 families.

Charity golf day makes a splash for two worthy causes THIS year’s S4 Charity Golf Day was the biggest yet, bringing together 32 fourballs and 20-hole sponsors for a memorable day of golf, generosity and community support. Heavy rain transformed the course and may even have introduced golfers to a new water sport, but it did little to dampen their enthusiasm. All 32 fourballs arrived on the day, with an impressive 30 teams seeing the event through to the end. Their commitment and positive spirit created an unforgettable atmosphere despite the challenging conditions. Through S4 Integration’s continued collaboration with Community Chest of the Eastern Cape, R235,000 was raised in support of Little Angels Daycare in Kuyga and the Gelvandale Rugby Academy. Supporting Little Angels Daycare Education, particularly during the foundation phase, is one of Community Chest EC’s key pillars. Situated in an under-resourced area of Nelson Mandela Bay, Little Angels Daycare was a natural choice as one of this year’s beneficiaries.
The daycare has a pressing need for a safe and suitable play area where children can exercise, improve their mobility and develop in an environment that supports learning. “This support will give more children the opportunity to dream, enjoy themselves and play in an environment that is conducive to learning,” said Selwyn Willis, CEO of Community Chest of the Eastern Cape. Investing in Young Rugby Talent A portion of the proceeds will also support the Gelvandale Rugby Academy, founded and led by Enrico Grootboom, who is currently dedicated solely to the academy and its young players. The academy develops junior and youth rugby talent in the Northern Areas of Gqeberha, using sport to keep young people off the streets and steer them away from gangsterism. Registered with the South African Rugby Union, it accommodates several age groups, from junior development divisions through to U21. The academy currently has an urgent need for assistance with transportation costs. Funding is also required to provide tracksuits for its top 10 students attending provincial matches
and to support its U/13 and U/16 teams ahead of their upcoming matches in Kareedouw. According to Grootboom, the funds will make a significant difference in the lives of the young players by giving them access to opportunities they may otherwise not have had. The academy has already helped more than 300 young players earn rugby and academic scholarships at prominent local and international schools. Former players have progressed to represent several major South African provincial unions, while others have secured professional contracts in countries including Germany, Scotland and Spain. Its teams also participate in prominent regional and international youth competitions, creating valuable opportunities for players to develop their skills, broaden their experiences and pursue their sporting ambitions. More than just a Golf Day The partnership between S4 Integration and Community Chest EC has grown significantly over the years, with each event strengthening their shared commitment to supporting local communities.
“We are extremely grateful for the support S4 has given Community Chest EC and for the trust the company continues to place in us,” Willis said. The participants’ determination to continue despite the heavy rain reflected their commitment to the causes and the difference they hoped to make. “What stood out was that this was more than just a golf day; it was about the cause. I would like to applaud everyone who pushed through the heavy rain for their resilience and commitment to making a difference,” Willis added S4 extended special thanks to the event’s main sponsors, Standard Bank, NoMuda, SICK Sensor Intelligence, Kempston and Rubicon, as well as all 20 hole sponsors whose contributions helped make the day possible. Willis concluded, “A massive thank you to everyone who contributed and participated, and to S4 for organising such a memorable, although very wet, golf day. We truly appreciate working with S4 in support of this incredible event.” The response has already been so encouraging that several participants have begun asking about the 2027 S4 Charity Golf Day.
Mona Kukkuk celebrates century of life and wisdom ALULUTHO MADOLO MONA Kukkuk celebrated her 100th birthday on 16 September. She is a resident at Park Drive Retirement Village, where she has lived for the past four years. The village is home to 127 residents, with a frail care unit accommodating 10 residents who need extra care. Mona was born on 16 September 1926 on the farm De Hoek in the Kariega district. Her life has spanned a century of change, challenge and adventure across three continents.
For Mona, reaching 100 means becoming a centenarian while remaining in good health. She has always kept herself busy, and the spirit of staying active has carried her through a full century of life. “My earliest childhood memory was my first day at school when my teacher picked me up from my desk in front of the whole class,” Kukkuk said. She attended Jordan Primary School, which was in Kariega in those years, and then Innis Primary School. She went on to attend Brandwag High School, and after high school, she con-
tinued her studies privately. Despite the challenges of growing up, Kukkuk described herself as being fairly successful in life. She worked for several years in Gqeberha as a shorthand typist before leaving for London, and later also worked in France. She felt she had to make a success of every role she took on, and that determination saw her through the difficult times. The happiest period of Mona’s life was travelling the world. Her travels began with her mother and siblings across South Africa. Much later, she travelled extensively while working for Sabena, the Belgian national airline. She also travelled to Austria, North and South America and the Far East. Those years of exploration brought her the greatest joy. Kukkuk encourages young people to start saving and investing small amounts of money when they are young, because those early habits compound over a lifetime. “The best advice to young people today is to focus on learning and building strong financial habits,” she said. Davidson claims second Air Race X championship PILOT Patrick Davidson won the 2026 AIR RACE X season finale recently, securing his second consecutive championship title for South Africa.

Racing for Team 77 in his Emotive-liveried Edge 540 V3, Davidson adds the 2026 crown to his breakthrough championship in 2025. The successful title defence brings another international sporting achievement home to Gqeberha and the Eastern Cape. Emotive, a European automotive aftermarket group based in Zug, Switzerland, supports Davidson’s AIR RACE X campaign. The company renewed its backing after supporting his first championship-winning season, linking its Parts That Fly High campaign to the precision, preparation and performance of air racing. AIR RACE X brings real aircraft and dig-
ital race presentation together. Pilots fly prescribed courses in high-performance aircraft at separate locations. Recorded flight data allows their performances to be measured, judged and presented in a shared competition for audiences around the world. Davidson’s career spans national aerobatic competition, the Red Bull Air Race Challenger Class and international display flying. A six-time South African national aerobatic champion, he grew up in an aviation family and entered flying competitions at 12 with a safety pilot before competing solo at 17. He won the opening round and finale of the 2025 AIR RACE X season to claim his first series title. Winning the 2026 finale and championship builds on that achievement with a successful defence against the international field.
Hill Presbyterian Church: Preserving history, community and faith HEIDI BOTHA THE Hill Presbyterian Church, presiding over the Donkin Reserve and situated on the corner of Athol Fugard and Alfred Terrace, has been an enduring landmark on Gqeberha’s historic hill for 160 years. Acknowledging the importance of this 19th-century building as a significant feature of the city’s landscape, the church’s minister, Reverend Lihai Bercovich, is committed to preserving its rich history while breathing new life into its ministry. The aim is to honour the church’s heritage while reaching beyond its walls to serve the community. On 25 December this year, Lihai, his wife Tammy, and their two children will have been part of the Hill Church for four years. “When we came here, people thought this was a museum; they actually didn’t know that we were worshipping here every Sunday,” says Lihai.
Together with his vision for the church to play a living, relevant part in the modern-day community, there is a commitment to preserve the historic building for generations to come. “I’m very much a community person and someone who tends to like to build a congregation as well as a church. The maintenance of this church is very expensive but – like with anything – if you don’t maintain, things slide.” Recent renovations have been undertaken, made possible with the help of a benefactor who shares the congregation’s vision. The Hill Church was designed by Frederick Pfeil in the Gothic Revival style and officially opened on 19 February 1865. With scaffolding alongside the building and workmen on the roof, there is a hive of activity boding well for the future of both the building and the city. “The roof really needed to be done. It hasn’t been touched in the last 160 years,” Lihai mentions with a smile. The beautiful stonework is one of the church’s

defining architectural features. “We had to chip right down to the stone because of damp problems,” Lihai explains, pointing out the work done around the entrance. “But we started with the hall.” Standing alongside the church since 1896, the Dunn Hall was designed by architect G.W. Smith and named after Sir William Dunn, one of its first elders. “The Dunn Hall turns 130 this year, marked by a special service on 1 November at 09:00, followed by a Bring-andShare in the hall. We are also raising funds by renting the hall to the community.” The church’s ministries include a thrift shop run from the hall on Tuesdays, selling affordable second-hand goods. On Tuesday nights, a student ministry runs from the old choir vestry, and a children’s ministry takes place during Sunday services. The church also hosts weddings and funerals. Reflecting the diversity of modern Gqeberha, the congregation brings together people of different cultural backgrounds, local residents and people from abroad. “The idea is to make the church accessible to all and not only to the older generation, but also to the younger people.” During services, music ranges from the rich sounds of the traditional organ to contemporary worship music. The church’s historic pipe organ, among the oldest still in use in the country, remains a piece of living history. “Last year, with the 160th anniversary, we had an organ recital with top organ players, including Albert Troskie.” Lihai’s knowledge and generosity of spirit are as clear as the light shining through the colourful stained-glass windows. He tells me about the old bell tower, points out the baptismal font, and recalls how an 80-year-old member of the congregation was baptised there. He regularly welcomes tourists
from the cruise ships to view the church. For as long as he can remember, his life has been rooted in faith, and he often shares his testimony of how, from a Jewish background, he came to know Jesus as his Saviour. Inside the sanctuary, cherished echoes of the past are held dear, while new ways of knitting together a community and a city ever closer to its roots and to each other are explored. Outside, workmen talk excitedly on the scaffolding as roof tiles tumble into skips. It is very much the sound of history in the making. With Lihai’s wife, Tammy, an events coordinator and a skilled teacher, and Lihai’s wise counsel, the church is steered by a dedicated, capable leadership team. The Hill Presbyterian Church has been an enduring landmark on Gqeberha’s historic hill for 160 years. PHOTO: HEIDI BOTHA

Rhino Night Relay raises record R30,195 for rhinos RAZAAN PLAATJIES
THE 2026 Rhino Night Relay has raised R30,195 for the Kouga Rhino Sanctuary, marking the biggest year yet for the annual rhino conservation fundraiser. The event, held at the Algoa Kart and Motorcycle Club in Gqeberha on 5 September, attracted 81 entries across the Calf, Amateur and Night Relay categories. Founded in 2018 by Gwen and Timothy Young, the non-profit event was created out of a passion for rhino conservation and enduro riding. Over the years, the event has brought together off-road motorcycle riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters, with funds raised through rider entries, raffles and donations going towards rhino conservation organisations. According to Gwen, the 2026 event not only surpassed the 2025 fundraiser but also became the biggest Rhino Night Relay since it started nine years ago. "2026, you absolutely blew us away," said Gwen. "We are incredibly proud to announce that the 2026 Rhino Night Relay raised R30,195 for Kouga Rhino Sanctuary." The event has supported several rhino
conservation organisations since its inception, including Saving The Survivors, Kragga Kamma Game Park, The Rhino Orphanage, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary and The Rhino Revolution. In 2025, the event donated more than R29,350 to The Rhino Revolution, following a donation of R26,050 in 2024. Gwen said the 2026 event was supported by 71 sponsors, with The Turbo Shop serving as the title sponsor. She thanked the sponsors for their contributions, which included money, prizes, products, services, equipment and time. "To every single one of our 71 sponsors, whether you donated money, prizes, products, services, equipment, time, or simply said, 'How can we help?' thank you," said Gwen. "This event would simply not be possible without you." Gwen also thanked the event team, volunteers, marshals, photographers, lap scorers, MC and other helpers who assisted with setting up, running and packing up the event. The event catered for riders of different ages and experience levels, with the Calf category for younger riders, the Amateur category during the day and the Night Relay for teams riding after dark.
Gwen also thanked all 81 entrants for taking part. "To our riders, from our little Calf riders to our Amateur riders and every Night Relay team who lined up in the dark, thank you for showing up, getting on your bikes and supporting something so much bigger than all of us," said Gwen. The Rhino Night Relay began in 2018, when approximately 80 riders participated despite freezing temperatures and heavy rain. The inaugural event raised just over R10,000 for Saving The Survivors. Since then, the event has continued to raise funds for different rhino conservation organisations, with donations increasing as more riders, sponsors and supporters joined the cause. Gwen said reaching the ninth year of the event with continued support was something she and Timothy would not take for granted. "To be standing here nine years strong, surrounded by people who continue to show up for us, for this event and, most importantly, for our rhinos, is something we will never, ever take for granted," said Gwen. "Nine years down, our biggest and best one yet. Until next time, because knowing us, there's always a next time."

EP chapter to host TBASA interprovincial tournament THE Eastern Province Tenpin Bowling Association (EPTBA) is excited to host the Tenpin Bowling Association of South Africa (TBASA) Interprovincial Tournament (IPT) at Nitro Park in Hunters Retreat from 14 to 21 November. TBASA president Kiley Cassel said seven
provinces will be in action at Baywest Mall’s 10-lane centre, namely Central Gauteng, Eastern Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo Province, Midlands and defending champions Eastern Province. “The provinces will each field gold, senior and silver teams to take part in the doubles,
trios, mixed trios, Baker and team events,” Cassel added. EPTBA media liaison officer, Conroy Caston, said the annual eight-day event returns to Gqeberha for the first time in several years. “The country’s leading bowlers – including
a number of current and former national athletes – will participate and a few perfect games of 300 pins are most likely,” he added. “Eastern Province won the Gold Trophy at last year’s IPT at Northcliff Bowl in Johannesburg and will be hoping for a victory on home lanes,” Caston said.
