AfricanSwineFeveroutbreakdetectedinSherwood

CONCERN for public health hasbeenraised in theSherwood area of Gqeberha after the NelsonMandela Bay Municipality confirmed an outbreak of AfricanSwine Fever amongpigs in the Grogro informalsettlement.

The municipality has moved swiftly to contain the situation followingreportsof multiple pig deaths in the arealastweek.

Municipal EnvironmentalHealth teams, working alongside State VeterinaryServices, confirmed the presence of the disease after initial concerns that the deaths may have been linked to poisoning

According to the Municipality’s Director for Environmental Health, Dr PatricNodwele, officials initially suspected poisoning when they arrived at the scene

“Upon arrival on site, our initial suspicion was possible poisoning,” saidNod-

wele.“And after engaging State Veterinary Services and conducting tests, the finaldiagnosiswas AfricanSwine Fever.”

What is African SwineFever?

African Swine Fever is ahighly contagious viraldisease that affects domesticand wild pigs. Itdoesnot pose arisktohumanhealth, but it is often fatalfor infected pigs and can spreadrapidlythroughpig populations.

The virus is commonly associated with wild pigspecies and spreads throughdirect contact between infected animals

Municipal officials havelinked the outbreakto free-roaming domesticpigsinthe Grogro informal settlement, potentially coming intocontact with wildpigsinsurrounding areas.

Following confirmation of the disease, Environmental HealthPractitionersand veterinaryservices carried out community

awareness campaigns in the affected area

Carcasses were safely removedand disposed of according to environmental and public health protocols, with ongoing monitoring in placetocontain the outbreak.

Concernsover public health andenforcement

Despite containment efforts, concernshave been raised over the presenceofdecomposing animalcarcasses and theriskthisposes to the localenvironment.

BillHarington,a FreedomFront Plus councillor, saidthe situation reflects seriousfailures in enforcement. “Reports of deadpigslying openly at dumpingsites are unacceptable in any community,” he said

He addedthat municipal bylaws require livestockowners to properly contain animals

“The uncontrolled movement of pigs high-

lights abreakdown in enforcement. Owners areresponsible forensuring animals do not create anuisance or health hazard,” Haringtonsaid. He called forurgentintervention, includingcarcass removal, stricterbylawenforcement andimprovedmonitoring of roaming livestock.

According to the Municipality, the outbreakremainscontained andisbeing closely monitored in collaboration with veterinary authorities

Officials have urgedresidents in the Sherwoodareatoreport anyunusual animal deaths andtoavoid handlingorconsuming meat from unknown or dead livestock.

Themunicipality says earlydetection and coordinatedresponse remain criticaltopreventing furtherspread of African Swine Feverincommunities wheredomestic and wild animals mayinteract.

RESIDENTS in parts of Ward 8inNelson MandelaBay have had their water supply restored after more than 21days, withthe disruptionultimately being traced toa closed valve.

Last week, PE Express reported growing frustration among residents in areas such as Montmedy Road, Longwy Avenue, Sedan Avenue and Birdsong Street, where households had been left without water for over three weeks.

During aspecial Nelson Mandela Bay councilmeeting on Wednesday, 13 May, Ward 8councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, raisedurgent concerns, saying parts of Lorraine and Kamma Park had experienced

extended outages that could notbesolely attributed to recent floods.

He added thatthe Department of Water Workshad been unable to locate the fault and called for urgent intervention.

“Water is abasic right,” he said, also urgingthe establishment of an independent investigation panel to determine the root cause of repeated failures.

Residents took to social media to express angerand frustrationover the prolonged disruption.

One resident said they hadexperienced more outages in the past six months than inthe previous 15 years, while others called for urgent infrastructure repairs and even legal action against the municipality for negligence.

On 14 May, Rautenbach saidhehad finally gained the attentionofExecutive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe after what he described as a“long andrelentless fight” on behalfof affected residents.

In alater update on 16 May, thecouncillorconfirmed thata jointinspection with the Department of Waterworks teams had identified aclosed valve at thecorner of Montmedy andNancy Streets.

Residents were urged to check their taps as supply restorationbegan.

“A teamfrom Waterworks and Iconducted further inspections of the watervalves andfound thatone of the valves… was closed,”Rautenbachshared. He hassince confirmed to PE Express that water hasbeen restored to allresidentsin

theaffected area.

Meanwhile, in astatement issued on 18 May, theNelson MandelaBay Municipality confirmed that allwater treatment works in themetro were operating at fullcapacity.

However, several zones continue to experience pressure issues and intermittent supply.

Areas such as Chelsea, Fairbridge Heights, and partsofMotherwellremain under strain due to lowreservoir levels, while others including Greenbushes, Lovemore Heights, and theAirport zone have shownsignificant recovery. At thetime, Chelsea Reservoir wascritically lowat11%, while Motherwell remained at 14%.

BaakensValleyrestorationunderwayafterstormdamage

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

RECENT storms have left the Baakens Valley trail network severely damaged, with years of trail-building work washed away by flooding and erosion across one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most valued outdoor spaces.

The extensive network, maintained by the local mountain biking organisation, FatTracks Mountain Bike Club, suffered widespread destruction following the severe weather that battered parts of the metro.

According to the organisation, more than 20 kilometres of trails were affected, with large sections washed out, eroded, or left unsafe for public use. Collapsed trail sections, damaged infrastructure and deep erosion have rendered several areas unrideable.

Trail users have been urgedto exercise extreme caution while repair work continues, as many sections remain hazardous.

The damage forms part of the broader impact caused by recent flooding across Nelson Mandela Bay, wheremunicipalteams continue with recovery and reliefoperations in affected communities.

FatTracks chairman, Marius Olivier, said that despite the extent of the destruction, efforts to restore the valley began almost immediately after the storms.

“FatTracks is not responsible for the maintenance and repair of the trails, but we have amemorandumofunderstandingwith the municipality whereby we undertake basic trail maintenance to keep the Baakens Valley safe and user-friendly for mountain biking, trail running, walking and hik-

ing,” hesaid.

Oliviersaid theclub considers itself custodiansofthe trails and hasalreadystarted repair work followingthe recent storm damage.

“Thebridges andriver crossings thatwebuiltfor hikers, cyclists and walkers were washed away,” he shared.

Representatives fromFatTracks met with themunicipalityonFriday, 22 May,todiscuss restoration efforts

“Weagreed to work together to

assess the damage and prioritise areas that need urgent repairs,” he shared He saidcommittee members, volunteers, engineers and sponsors have already steppedintoassist withexpertise and materials. Among the immediatematerialsneeded aresoil to filleroded areas and dongas,G5compactible soil, gravel, crush, pallets, wooden planks, wooden poles, wire, mesh, long nails, rope, spades, wheelbarrows, stampers, petrol compactors and chainsaws.

FatTracks said offers of heavy machinery, particularly earthmovingequipment such as TLBs, wouldbeinvaluable in assisting withthe large-scale restoration work

In aflood response update issued on 21 May, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipalitysaid teams from Infrastructure and Engineering, Public Health and Disaster Management remain on the ground attendingtomop-up operations and infrastructure assessmentsacross the metro.

“Importantly, no lives werelost during thiscrisis, demonstrating the preparedness, coordination and swift response of the NMBM Disaster Management teams and all stakeholders involved,” the municipality said.

The municipality added that PublicHealth teams had undertaken extensive tree-clearing operations following the storms.

“All reported trees obstructing traffic have been cleared, while teams remain on siteattending to remaining matters, particularly trees located on private properties,”the municipality said.

The metro further confirmed that recovery and rebuilding processes are already being planned.

“Following the classification of the disaster, the Municipalitywill reprioritise budgets across directorates and is consolidating damages in order to apply for grants aimed at the repair and reconstruction of flood-damaged infrastructure,”the municipality said.

As part of broader disaster relief efforts, assistance has also been distributed to flood-affected residents housed at shelters in Ward 33 through apartnership between the municipality and the Al-Imdaad Foundation.

“The Al-Imdaad Foundation donated essential relief items, which weredistributed through the Municipality’s Disaster Management Sub-Directorate to assist families affected by the recent floods,” the municipality said.

“The donation reflects aspirit of care, compassion and solidarity with communities facing hardship during thisdifficultperiod.”

Communityunitestosupportchildrenfollowingstormdamage

NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

WHEN crisis strikes, one thing residents of Gqeberha can alwaysrely on is the extraordinary heart of the people of NelsonMandela Bay

From supporting vulnerable animals to standing behind children in need, thisisa community that consistently showsupwhen it matters most.

Earlierthis month, the MTR Smit Children’s Haven —a home caring for 84 vulnerable children —made an urgent publicappeal for assistanceafter severe storm damage left partsofits facility badly affected.

Theorganisation called for donations of both perishableand non-perishablefood to help sustain daily meals until expected State funding is received at the end of May.

Senior social worker, Maliska Gravett, explained that the appeal came at atime when the haven was alreadyunder pressuredue to delayed subsidies.

“We made our first plea before the floods andsevere weather because we have not yet received our subsidies that were dueinApril,” Gravettshared

She added that the initial response from the public was immediate and deeply appreciated

“The first plea was to ask for support for our pantry. Restaurant owners and individuals came forward, we had deliveriesdone, and then aweek later, thebig stormhit.”

Once again, the response reflectedthe spirit of the cityknown as theFriendlyCity.

The same community of Nelson MandelaBay came together to help rebuild SPCAUitenhage during atime of uncertaintyearlierthis year, raisingmore than R2.7 million to secure its future.

In the case of the children’s haven, the recent stormcaused significant structural damage,

includingthe collapseofawall, and damage to rooftops, electric fencing, and the security gate motor

Gravettdescribedthe impact on already limited resources. “The gate motor was recently replaced at acost of R20,000 beforebeing damaged again,” she said

She added that the damage escalated quickly after severe weather, including hail and flooding, resulting in an estimated R130,000 in losses. While insured, the organisation must still cover a10% co-payment.

Despitethe challenges, she said community support has been overwhelming.

“We have had so much support; we have enough food until the end of the month,” she shared. “You can imagine how many groceries are needed. Schools, restaurant owners, churches, individuals—thereisalways

aspecial thank you to those who ask not to be named and so many whocame forward to help.”

Shealsohighlighted ongoing maintenance needsdue to the age of the facility.

“With allofthe damage, running so many households, the houses built in 1980, thereis always something that needstobedone.”

The organisation, whichstarted in 1918 in response to the influenza-era crisis that left many childrenorphaned, was established in a small towninthe northern part of the Eastern Cape

“When COVID happened, wecame full circle; it was like deja vu,” Gravett said, reflecting on itslong history of responding to crises affectingvulnerable children.

In 1987, the haven moved to Gqeberha onto land donated by aformer mayor of the metro.

“We take care of 83 children; 76 are state subsidised, and they live in seven different houses,” Gravett explained. “It’s like running multiple households.”

There are around nine to 14 children per household across the facility.

The children are not orphaned but have been placed therebythe State due to abandonment, neglect, or abuse.

“Sometimes they come for two years at a time and other times it’s longer,” Gravett said.

While the organisation is non-profit and non-governmental, it remains dependent on subsidies from the Department of Social Development, which are often delayed.

“We are subsidised by the Department of Social Development and our financial year runs from 1April to the end of March,”she said.

Beyond immediatecare, the haven focuses on life skills development for older children, using donated tools and equipment for practical training.

“We prepare our older children —how to run abudget, how to screw alightbulb; any of thosepractical things that people are not using, we are open to receiving them,”Gravett said. “What we cannot use we will share with an organisation that has adire need.”

The organisation also operates aFriday thrift shop from 09:00 to 14:00, with proceeds supporting fuel, food, and maintenance costs.

The Haven currently supportschildren from the age of three up until 20. “Our youngest is three, and we usually have children up to before they turn18, but they are allowed if they are still at school or varsity,”Gravettsaid. She added that even small acts of kindness continue to make adifference.

“There are even children who come in with theirpiggy banks —even the smallest contribution,”she said. “It is so heartwarming to us.”
