R4.7m upgrade for flood-damaged M17 A KEY route linking industrial and residential areas across Nelson Mandela Bay is set for a R4.7 million refurbishment after years of flood damage and increasing traffic volumes. Work has started on the M17, which connects Motherwell and Markman’s industrial areas with Swartkops, KwaZakhele, New Brighton and Zwide. Flooding over the past three years has taken a toll on the road, while heavy-duty and regular traffic have further worsened its condition in recent months. According to the municipality, the deteriorating road has created a high-risk environment for motorists and increased the potential for accidents. Planned work includes resurfacing sections of the M17 and repairing parts of its stormwater drainage system.
Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said that the M17 was among the metro’s most economically active routes, carrying public and commercial vehicles around the clock. “The current condition of the road, which was caused by flooding, has been posing a serious risk to motorists.” Lobishe said improving the road network was also important for supporting the local economy and ensuring residents could travel safely while goods were transported efficiently. Funding for the project comes from the municipality’s R60 million Fill the Bay Programme, which targets pothole repairs and the resurfacing of damaged roads across Nelson Mandela Bay. Although M17 is a provincial road, the municipality said that it had approached the provincial government to allow the refurbishment
to proceed because of budget constraints and a lack of provincial funding for the project in the current financial year. Municipal officials said funding was available and contractors had already been appointed. Lobishe said the project also reflected the District Development Model, under which different spheres of government work together to improve service delivery and implement catalytic projects. Work is expected to take about four weeks, weather permitting. Looking further ahead, a feasibility study is under way to investigate expanding the M17 to accommodate its high traffic volumes and improve safety. Serving both economic and residential areas, the route links key parts of the metro, including Motherwell and the former Ibhayi area.
Traffic accommodations will be implemented where necessary to allow contractors to work safely and efficiently. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Eastern Cape rolls out new ambulances as 211 remain grounded THE Eastern Cape government is rolling out new ambulances as the Department of Health reports that 211 of approximately 350 vehicles in its fleet are currently grounded. That leaves 139 ambulances operational, according to the latest figures provided by the department. Of the grounded vehicles, 44 have been out of service for fewer than 30 days, while 167 have been grounded for periods ranging from more than 30 to 120 days. The latest figures are down from those previously provided by Health MEC, Ntandokazi Capa, in response to a parliamentary question from DA Shadow MEC for Health, Jane Cowley. The earlier response recorded 192 operational ambulances and 161 grounded. The parliamentary response also showed that Nelson Mandela Bay had 40 ambulances, of which nine were grounded, leaving 31 operational. Cowley wrote to Capa and Premier Oscar Mabuyane on 12 August, calling for an investigation into delays in repairing the provincial ambulance fleet.
“For thousands of our residents, an ambulance is the only lifeline between desperately required healthcare services and death,” Cowley said. She said she had received reports of no functional ambulances in Joe Gqabi, as well as shortages in Nqweba (Kirkwood) and the Willowmore/Rietbron and Baviaans areas of the Sarah Baartman district. Cowley described the situation as “simply untenable” and called for plans to prioritise the repair of ambulances. “A failure to do so would mean the perpetuation of unnecessary deaths,” she said. In a statement dated 18 August, Cowley said the latest figures raised “serious questions about both the deterioration of the service and the management of the provincial fleet”. New vehicles on the way According to a provincial government media statement issued on 18 August, the Department of Health has started receiving additional vehicles through Government Fleet Management Services (GFMS) and the East-
GQEBERHA 19
ern Cape Department of Transport. The statement said the initiative was aimed at addressing “an ageing ambulance fleet, frequent breakdowns, the rural nature of the province and the time required to repair and maintain vehicles”. Fourteen new ambulances were distributed in Sarah Baartman last week, together with seven patient transport vehicles and nine response vehicles. A further 20 ambulances were scheduled for delivery on 21 August, followed by 26 on 4 September, 35 by the end of October, 74 in February 2027 and 40 in March 2027. The final 40 will be retained by GFMS for short-term deployment to the Department of Health when vehicles are undergoing repairs. The statement said the department also has arrangements with private service providers to supplement the government ambulance fleet where necessary.
Repairs remain a concern Cowley welcomed the replacement programme but said it would not immediately resolve the number of vehicles off the road. “While this is welcome, it does not address the immediate crisis of more than 200 ambulances standing idle, nor the systemic delays that have kept vehicles grounded for months,” she said. She said the latest figures were “significantly worse” than those previously supplied to the DA in a parliamentary reply. Cowley called for repairs to be fast-tracked and for vehicles to be properly equipped and safe to operate. According to the provincial government, the programme is intended to strengthen ambulance services and ensure people across the Eastern Cape, particularly in rural communities, can access emergency medical care when they need it.

WRONG WAY, TOURIST!
Summerstrand sign corrected NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT
SUMMERSTRAND’S newest tourism sign was meant to point visitors in the right direction. It just needed to find its own way first. Installed at the Pollock Beach parking area, the sign pointed visitors in the wrong direction until the error was flagged and corrected this week. The directional blunder attracted attention on social media, with members of the public questioning whether the arrows correctly pointed towards the attractions listed. Questions were sent to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality asking when the new signage was installed, whether it had been erected by the municipality, whether officials were aware that it appeared to have been installed incorrectly and whether it would be rectified or replaced. The municipality confirmed there had been an error with the signage and said it had immediately engaged the service provider responsible for its maintenance and updating. “The Municipality became aware of an error relating to the signage and immediately engaged the service provider responsible for its maintenance and updating,” it said. According to the municipality, the signage has already been corrected by the service provider. Officials acknowledged the importance of accurate and reliable tourism signage, saying incorrect information could cause confusion among visitors and negatively affect public confi-

The municipality said all information displayed on tourism signage must be thoroughly checked and verified to ensure
it is accurate, relevant and reflective of the destination. “Following this error, we have reviewed our quality check systems to make sure that such instances do not happen again,” it said. The municipality did not specify when the signage was originally installed or how much it cost.

Cruise tourism injects R111m into Nelson Mandela Bay economy NELSON Mandela Bay’s cruise tourism sector generated an estimated R111 million for the local economy during the 2025/26 season, up from R96.5 million the previous season. The latest figures were presented during a review of the cruise season, bringing together tourism operators, cruise industry representatives, tour guides, hospitality businesses and other stakeholders with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The city welcomed 39 international cruise vessels during the season, carrying 59,077 passengers and 22,994 crew members.According to the municipality, visitors spent money across a range of local businesses and services, including accommodation, restaurants, transport, retail, cultural and wildlife experiences, township tourism and attractions. While the number of cruise calls varies from one season to the next, the increase in economic value suggests that the focus is shifting beyond simply attracting ships to maximising the benefit each visit brings to the local tourism economy. The municipality’s Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Directorate said the review was intended to identify areas for improvement while building on the successes of the season. Among the issues identified were the need for stronger coordination within elements of the security cluster, greater support for emerging tourism entrepreneurs from previously disadvantaged communities and improved operational efficiencies around harbour access. The city said it had already taken steps to increase security visibility, including the launch of beachfront security patrollers in June and greater law-enforcement visibility in partnership with other agencies. Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the willingness of tourism stakeholders to identify challenges and areas for improvement was an indication of stronger partnerships within the sector. “The most successful destinations in the world are those that never stop learning,” Lobishe said. She said the city’s Tourism Master Plan provided a long-term framework for using tourism to drive inclusive economic development. “Every cruise ship that arrives in our city creates opportunities far beyond the harbour,” she said.According to Lobishe, cruise visitors support restaurants, guesthouses, township tourism operators, craft producers, transport businesses, tour guides and local attractions. The municipality said cruise tourism also provides an opportunity to introduce international visitors to Nelson Mandela Bay’s beaches, biodiversity, cultural heritage, wildlife, adventure activities and hospitality. It said cruise tourism could have benefits beyond the initial visit, with some passengers extending their stays or returning to the destination independently. Preparations for the next cruise season are already under way, with lessons from the latest review expected to inform operational planning, visitor services, destination experiences and support programmes for tourism businesses. Lobishe said that the city wanted to build a reputation that extended beyond being a port of call. “We want Nelson Mandela Bay to be remembered not simply as a port of call, but as a destination that surprises visitors with its warmth, authenticity, natural beauty and unforgettable experiences,” she said.

GQ Creamery’s sweet success takes it to national SME finals NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT A GQEBERHA dessert business has its sights on the national stage after winning the Eastern Cape title in the 2026 Standard Bank Kasi SME Pitch Challenge. GQ Creamery founder, Thando Volontiya, will represent the province at the national finals on 27 August, when entrepreneurs from across the country will compete for the R1 million grand prize. For Volontiya, the achievement is a proud milestone in a journey driven by a simple ambition: to create more than an ice-cream shop. “I wanted GQ Creamery to be more than just an ice-cream shop. I wanted it to become an experience — a place where families, friends and young people could come together, celebrate and create memories,” he said. He admitted he had never imagined the business would grow as far as it has. “What started as a dream has developed into a growing business with a strong customer base, new opportunities and plans for expansion. Looking back, I’m extremely proud of how far GQ Creamery has come.” Volontiya has also worked to develop his knowledge of the craft. He studied at Carpigiani Gelato University, an internationally recognised gelato training institution in Italy, through its Johannesburg branch. “I wanted to make sure that we weren’t simply producing ice cream, but that we were developing our products according to proper gelato techniques and standards,” he said. Volontiya says the appeal of desserts goes beyond the product itself. “As a child, a sweet treat wasn’t just food; it was something that created excitement and made a normal day feel special,” he said. “That feeling has stayed with me.” It is a feeling he hopes to recreate for GQ Creamery customers, whether it is a child enjoying a bubble waffle, a family sharing gelato or friends simply coming in to have fun. “That’s really at the heart of what GQ Creamery represents: Happiness for everyone.” Volontiya says he is inspired by people who start with very little but refuse to give up on their dreams. His customers, community and team also motivate him. “Building a business isn’t something you do alone,” he said. His vision is for GQ Creamery to become more than a successful business. He wants it to create employment, develop people and contribute positively to the community.
That ambition has not come without challenges. Volontiya says one of the greatest difficulties has been learning how to grow while managing costs, staffing, suppliers, customers and daily operations. He has learnt to be disciplined, understand the numbers behind the business, listen to customers and adapt. “Every challenge has taught me something that has helped make GQ Creamery stronger,” he said. Volontiya entered the Standard Bank Kasi SME Pitch Challenge because he saw it as an opportunity to step outside his comfort zone and put his vision for GQ Creamery in front of people who could help take the business to the next level. Winning the Eastern Cape title was an incredibly proud moment. “It wasn’t just a personal achievement. It felt like recognition of the hard work that has gone into building GQ Creamery and the belief that we have in the future of the business.” The 2026 competition is the second national edition of the Standard Bank Kasi SME Pitch Challenge, with qualifying entrepreneurs from all nine provinces competing for provincial prizes before progressing to the national finals. The nine provincial winners, together with one first runner-up, make up the Top 10 national finalists. Each provincial winner received R50,000, while the first and second runners-up received R10,000 each. “I’m excited, grateful and definitely nervous — but it’s a good kind of nervousness!” Winning the R1 million could transform the next chapter of GQ Creamery. Volontiya says the money would be invested directly into expansion, including additional outlets, equipment and operational capacity. The business is already working towards expanding into additional locations, including a new Walmer location. “Our goal is to build GQ Creamery into a recognised local brand with a strong presence across the metro and eventually beyond Gqeberha,” he said. Growth is not simply about opening more stores, he adds. “I don’t just want to build more stores. I want to build a sustainable business that creates jobs, develops people and gives customers a place where they can genuinely come and experience happiness,” said Volontiya. “The dream is much bigger than one shop. GQ Creamery is about creating happiness, one scoop at a time — and we’re only getting started.”

Marko wins bronze at World Athletics U/20 Championships EMERIS Nelson Mandela Bay first-year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching student and sprinter, Marko Ferreira, made his mark on the world stage when he won a bronze medal in the men’s 100m at the recent World Athletics U20 Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, USA. He clocked 10.16 seconds in the final to secure third place and finish as the third-fastest U20 athlete in the world in the 100m. American Tate Taylor claimed gold in 9.94 seconds, while Jamaica’s Gary Card took silver in 10.05 seconds. His journey to the podium was impressive from the get-go. He won his opening race in 10.11 seconds, before running 10.13 seconds in the semi-final, as the second-fastest athlete, to qualify for the final. Going into the final with a medal firmly within reach, Ferreira delivered another strong performance to secure his place on the podium alongside some of the world's fastest young sprinters. Reflecting on his performance, Ferreira said the result was a proud moment after
years of hard work and preparation with his coach. “The race wasn’t anything I could have imagined, but it was the best I could execute on the night. I always dreamed of winning, but having the medal around my neck now… I feel so accomplished. It’s what my coach and I have been training for the whole time, so I’m super happy with it”, he said. “I’m super proud of Marko for being able to hold his composure and to show such resilience under pressure. Competing at this level is not as easy as it may seem, but he executed the plan when it mattered most,” said Jessi Khan (Coach and owner of Heat Athletics Club, Gqeberha). “Taking third in the world against an elite field validates all the hard work, and it sets a strong foundation for what’s to come.” For Marko, the experience in Eugene is one he will carry with him as he continues to grow both on and off the track. With the support of his coach, his family and those who have followed his journey, this could be the beginning of an exciting next chapter for the young sprinter.

It’s about people coming together to make a real difference. Every rider, sponsor, volunteer and spectator plays a part in protecting our rhinos, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received over the years,” said Gwen. She said the event has supported various rhino conservation organisations since its inception, including Saving The Survivors, Kragga Kamma Game Park, The Rhino Orphanage, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary and The Rhino Revolution. Gwen said that in 2025, the Rhino Night Relay donated more than R29,350 to The Rhino Revolution, following a record donation of R26,050 in 2024. She added that in 2026, funds raised will be donated to the Kouga Rhino Sanctu-
ary, continuing the event’s commitment to supporting rhino conservation. “The Rhino Night Relay is more than just a ride; it’s a community-driven event with a purpose. Every rider, sponsor and supporter plays a role in protecting one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered species,” said Gwen. The 2026 event will take place at the Algoa Kart and Motorcycle Club in Gqeber-
ha and will feature activities for riders of all ages and experience levels. Gwen said the Calf Loop, named after a baby rhino, will take place from 12:00 to 13:00 and will offer younger riders a fun and safe daytime ride, with every child receiving a goodie bag. She said the Amateur Loop, from 13:30 to 14:30, will provide an opportunity for adults who prefer not to ride at night to

take part in the event. Gwen further said the main event will take place from 16:00 to 20:00, with teams of two riders taking turns completing loops under the night sky. While the riding remains the highlight of the event, she said spectators can enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with food trucks, a licensed bar, a jumping castle, lucky draws, prizes and entertainment. According to Gwen, the event has grown significantly since its first year in 2018, when approximately 80 riders participated despite freezing temperatures and heavy rain. During the inaugural event, just over R10,000 was donated to Saving The Survivors. She said the event continued to grow over the years, with donations increasing as more riders, sponsors and supporters joined the cause. “We dedicate countless hours throughout the year planning the event alongside a dedicated team of volunteers and sponsors, with every contribution helping to create an unforgettable experience while raising funds for a different rhino organisation each year,” said Gwen. The 2026 event currently has 64 sponsors, with The Turbo Shop as the main title sponsor. “Every contribution helps create an unforgettable experience while raising funds for rhino conservation,” said Gwen. “Ride with purpose. Ride for rhinos.” For more information visit the Rhino Night Relay's Facebook page.

Left-handed Booi rolled 2,524 pins and also shot the men’s high game of 255, while De Villiers finished with 2,389 pins. Celebrating with them is TBASA president, Kiley Cassel (right). Weekend sports news, results, upcoming fixtures SELBY MADIKANE Mighty Heroes FC lift ZWIFA Super League trophy MIGHTY Heroes FC fans celebrated when their side secured the Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Super League title at Young Romans Grounds on Sunday. Mighty Heroes head coach, Siyabulela Scara Hermanus, attributed their success to dedication, determination and discipline. Hermanus said, “I was very emotional after we won our last game 8-0 over Everton FC on Sunday. The players were also emotional and delighted because they had been trying hard to take the honours. We were competing with the tough Shining Stars FC B. We both finished the league with 32 points, but we had a better goal difference than Stars,” he said. “I always told my boys that they should stay focused on every game; hence, I am pleased that our side lifted this prestigious trophy. Furthermore, the previous games had a telling effect on my players. Certainly, my boys will make it in the ZWIFA Premier League in the upcoming season.” Heroes are on a mission to secure a head coach who can train the team on a daily basis, as Hermanus is not always available to coach. Hermanus thanked the three officials who kept their side ticking and the club’s legends for their support. Hermanus also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to their die-hard supporters and parents for their unwavering support to the club through thick and thin. Shining Stars FC B, the league runners-up, defeated Young Killers FC 3-1 in their last league encounter at Gal City Grounds on Sunday.
