EC records two mpox cases as national total rises to 26 THE Eastern Cape has recorded two laboratory-confirmed mpox cases as South Africa’s national total increased to 26, the Department of Health said. Four additional cases have been confirmed nationally, bringing the cumulative number of laboratory-confirmed mpox cases reported since 1 January 2026 from 22 to 26. The 26 cases are distributed across five provinces, with 18 re-

ported in the Western Cape, three in Gauteng, two in the Eastern Cape, two in the Free State and one in KwaZulu-Natal. The Department did not provide further details on the two Eastern Cape cases in its latest update. Of the 18 cases reported in the Western Cape, two were imported cases involving foreign nationals visiting South Africa, while the remaining 16 were linked to local transmission. Twenty-five of the 26 cases are

male, with ages ranging from 23 to 50 years and a median age of 37. The Department has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and seek healthcare promptly if they develop symptoms such as a rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes or fatigue. People who have been in close contact with a confirmed or suspected mpox case have been advised to inform healthcare workers and monitor themselves for

symptoms for 21 days. Should symptoms develop, they should avoid close contact with others and seek medical attention. Mpox is a preventable and treatable viral infection. The public has been advised to avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has an mpoxlike rash and not to share bedding, towels, clothing or other personal items with affected individuals. Healthcare workers have also been urged to maintain a high

index of suspicion and adhere to infection prevention and control protocols when managing suspected cases. The Department said it would continue working with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), provincial health authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance, case finding, contact tracing, risk communication and community engagement to contain further spread of mpox.

Motherwell pump station refurbished to end sewage spills FOR years, families living near the Motherwell 7 Sewer Pump Station in Ward 54 knew the warning signs. The Nelson Mandela spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, said when the power went out, when equipment failed, or when the station was vandalised, sewage did not stay underground. It flowed into streets and yards, past front doors and into the spaces where children play. Every failure was felt first in the home. “That story is now changing. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has completed a full electrical and mechanical refurbishment of the station, which is fully operational once again. The R5,64 million project marks a significant step in the Metro’s commitment to reliable sanitation, public health and dignity for every household,” said Siyoya. “For Ward 54 Councillor Lunga Minyayo, who lives in the area and whose own household is served by the station, the refurbishment is personal.” “I do not speak about this as an observer. I live here, and like my neighbours, I know what it means when the station fails. You open your gate, and the street is flooded with sewage. Parents worry about their children playing outside. Elderly residents feel trapped in their own homes. This refurbishment gives our community back something that should never have been taken away: the right to live in a clean and healthy environment,” said Minyayo. Soyaya said the station’s breakdowns were never the result of a single fault. Ageing equipment, recurring power outages, vandalism and illegal electricity connections combined to push the system beyond its limits, time and again. Carried out through the Metro’s Mechanical and Electrical emergency contract, the work was designed around the problems residents have lived with. “Three new T8 Gorman-Rupp pumps now operate in rotation,

with two running at any time and the third on standby. Should one pump fail, the standby takes over immediately, ensuring that a single equipment fault no longer becomes a spill on a resident’s street.” “A new Motor Control Centre panel now serves as the station’s nerve centre, bringing modern, reliable control to the entire facility. New pipework and valves replace the worn system that caused leaks and blockages, allowing wastewater to move through the network as designed, while new station lighting enables maintenance teams to respond safely at night and during emergencies,” said Soyaya. “The final component, a dedicated backup generator, is now being installed. With power outages among the leading causes of spills in the area, the generator will keep the station pumping when the grid goes down, breaking the link between power interruptions and sewage in the streets.” “What matters to people is not only the new pumps, but the reasoning behind them. A standby pump that takes over when another fails, and a generator that keeps the station running during outages, address exactly the problems we have lived with for years. That is service delivery people can feel,” said Minyayo. “The project has also been delivered with financial discipline. Of the R5,64 million (VAT included) allocated, R5,37 million has been spent to date, approximately 95 per cent of the budget, with full accountability for public funds,” said Soyaya. Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe said the project reflects the Metro’s commitment to services that make a visible difference in people’s lives. “Reliable sanitation services are essential to protecting public health, preserving the environment and ensuring that our communities live in safe and dignified conditions. Through this R5,64 million investment, we are strengthening critical infrastructure to reduce sewer spillages

Our commitment is to ensure that infrastructure investment translates into tangible service delivery improvements that make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of our residents,” said Lobishe. “To safeguard the investment at Motherwell 7, Water and Sanitation is procuring a service provider to fence the station and protect it against illegal dumping and vandalism. Maintenance teams will be accompanied by security escorts when responding to emergency callouts, and the Metro will work with residents to address illegal electricity connections, which strain the local supply and threaten the station’s operation,” said Soyaya. Director of Plant Maintenance in the Sub-Directorate Water and Sanitation, Mfundo Bukubukwa-

na, said the technical work had addressed the root causes of the station’s failures. “The refurbishment strengthens the station’s operational capacity and addresses key technical challenges that have contributed to service disruptions. These improvements are essential to reducing sewer spillages, protecting public health and ensuring more reliable sanitation services for the Motherwell community,” said Bukubukwana. “The Metro has refurbished the station, but keeping it working is a shared responsibility. Residents are urged to dispose of waste responsibly, keep rags, plastics and other foreign objects out of toilets and drains, refrain from interfering with municipal infrastructure or connecting illegally to the electricity supply,

and report vandalism, illegal dumping and any activity that threatens essential services,” said Soyaya. Councillor Minyayo added a direct appeal to his fellow residents. “This station belongs to us. When it is vandalised, when cables are stolen or when people connect illegally, it is our own streets that pay the price. I ask every household in Ward 54 to protect it, to keep foreign objects out of our drains and to report anything suspicious. We have waited a long time for this. Now we must look after it together. “When the community and the Metro work together, the investment made at Motherwell 7 will continue to deliver what every family deserves: a clean, safe and dignified place to call home,” said Soyaya.

Two sentenced for R1.7 million fraud, money laundering MEGAN Brooks (42) and Leroy Bezuidenhout (36) have been handed custodial sentences for their involvement in a fraud and money laundering scheme that saw more than R1.7 million misappropriated from Keens Wholesalers, a business based in Korsten, Gqeberha. The sentences were secured by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in Gqeberha. According to the Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, the sentences were handed down by the Re-

gional Court at the New Law Courts in Gqeberha on Wednesday, 14 October, following an investigation by the Hawks. “Their co-accused, Rochanda Leander (41), was sentenced in 2020,” he said. Mhlakuvana added that Brooks and Leander were employed as office administrators at Keens Wholesalers. “Their duties included telesales, compiling invoices for payment and preparing cash deposits intended for the company’s suppliers.” He explained that between September 2017 and February 2018,

Brooks and Leander allegedly prepared deposit slips purporting to reflect legitimate payments to Health Shield. “Instead of the funds being deposited into the supplier’s legitimate account, the money was channelled into an account opened in Health Shield’s name,” he said. “The funds were subsequently shared among the accused, resulting in a total misappropriation of more than R1.7 million.” The Hawks conducted an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the accused.

“They appeared in court and were subsequently released on bail,” he said. “The matter proceeded through numerous court appearances before Brooks and Bezuidenhout were sentenced on Wednesday, 14 October.” Mhlakuvana added that Brooks was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for fraud, of which five years were suspended, subject to certain conditions. “She was also sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for money laundering, with the sentence ordered to run concurrently with

her fraud sentence,” he said. “Therefore, Brooks will serve seven years’ imprisonment.” Mhlakuvana also explained that Bezuidenhout was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for fraud, of which four years were suspended for five years, subject to certain conditions. “He was further sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for money laundering, with the sentence ordered to run concurrently with his fraud sentence,” he said. “Therefore, Bezuidenhout will serve nine years’ imprisonment.”

A journey of whales, science and conservation NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT AS humpback whales make their annual journey along the African coastline, marine biologist Dr Deborah Robertson-Andersson is following their route to share the story of these ocean giants and the importance of protecting the marine environment with communities along the way. Since joining the Southern African Humpback Migration Route in 2023, Robertson-Andersson has delivered 69 presentations between Gansbaai and Ponto do Ouro in Mozambique. Her contribution has earned her a commendation in the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (WESSA) Conservation Leadership Awards for Individuals. According to Raggy Charters’ Reservations, Marketing & Admin representative, Karen Keeton, Robertson-Andersson first joined the initiative as a guest speaker at the local Port Elizabeth Whale Migration Festival before becoming fully involved. “She ended up joining wholeheartedly,” Keeton said. The idea for the migration route came from Raggy Charters founder, Lloyd Edwards, who believed the annual whale migration deserved greater recognition. “Lloyd Edwards thought the whale migration needed as much focus/recognition as the great wildebeest mi-

gration through Serengeti,” Keeton said. “Whales being ever so important to our ecology.” Edwards also envisaged the migration becoming a tourism attraction, encouraging visitors to travel along the African coastline as the whales made their annual journey. “He thought this could become a ‘follow the whales’ tourist attraction too – uplifting tourism with tourists going up and down the West and East coasts of Africa to see the whales on their journey,” Keeton said. “I believe this is happening.” Edwards established the Baywatch Marine Conservation Project in 1992 to educate communities, particularly young people, about the marine environment and the need to protect it. Although talks were held from the project's inception, the first “Welcoming the Whales” presentation took place at Bayworld in August 2005. The first “Welcoming the Whales Festival” followed at Pine Lodge in Gqeberha in June 2018. Presentations by Edwards and Dr Lorien Pichegru formed part of the programme, which was opened by then-mayor, Athol Trollip, and included stalls and a photographic exhibition of Edwards’ images of Algoa Bay’s marine mammals. The organisation estimates that Robertson-Andersson has travelled the equivalent of 55% of the way around the planet during her South

African travels for the project, studies and presentations. Robertson-Andersson will present a paper on the Humpback Route at the International Conference on Coastal, Marine and Maritime Research in Durban later this month. Keeton said the paper draws on “nine years of programme records, participation stats and documented conservation outcomes”. “The paper develops a conceptual process model proposing that repeated science communication generates

adaptive social feedback through which existing stewardship is connected, collaborative action is mobilised, and conservation networks progressively expand,” she said. The research examines how repeated science communication may connect existing conservation efforts, encourage collaboration and expand conservation networks. Raggy Charters’ marine tourism operation also helps fund its conservation projects in Algoa Bay and beyond.

“Raggy Charters tour income – contributes to all our projects – our guests do not just pay for us to show them around on a guided marine safari – their tour fee contributes to every project listed,” Keeton said. She said the team also spends considerable time educating guests about marine life in Algoa Bay and the projects aimed at protecting it. Robertson-Andersson, meanwhile, raises her own funds to continue her conservation work along the route. “Like us, she does not get paid a salary for doing marine conservation, but instead does her own fundraising along the route,” Keeton said. “This is the difference . . . it is very easy to do marine conservation work when you are paid a salary to do so. It is far more impressive if you have to raise your own funds!” Although Robertson-Andersson is based near East London in the Eastern Cape, Keeton said she is “constantly on the go with the migration project, studies and talks”. Her WESSA commendation recognises her contribution to an initiative that has grown from Edwards’ original vision into a network of presentations and festivals spanning the African coastline. Through the “Welcoming the Whales” programme, the annual migration continues to provide an opportunity to engage communities in marine conservation.

Baakens Zipline project moves ahead with site preparations SITE preparations have begun for the Mandela Bay Development Agency’s (MBDA) R15-million Baakens Zipline project, which aims to link Fort Frederick with the Lower Baakens Valley and boost tourism in the heart of Gqeberha. The first phase of work includes replacing the perimeter fencing at Fort Frederick to improve security and accessibility, prevent illegal dumping and protect the historic precinct. Cleaning, clearing and other security-related activities are also under way as the MBDA prepares the area for future development. The new fencing at Fort Frederick is similar to that installed along St George’s Park in Park Drive. The design and colour were coordinated with the City’s Parks Department to ensure consistency with fencing elsewhere in the city, using the St George’s Park fencing as a reference. Gates have been incorporated along that the vehicular access route to ensure the Fire Department can continue accessing the valley in an emergency. Ongoing maintenance will be coordinated with the City, with particular attention given to keeping the gates and access routes available for emergency

use. The zipline project forms part of the broader Baakens Valley development vision, which seeks to unlock the tourism, leisure, environmental and heritage potential of the precinct while encouraging visitors to spend more time in the city centre. The MBDA’s Baakens Masterplan, commissioned in 2014, identified opportunities to revitalise the Lower Baakens Valley through the development of public spaces, tourism facilities and supporting infrastructure. A feasibility study and business plan for the zipline were subsequently undertaken in 2019, with the route selected to link two key locations: Fort Frederick and the Lower Baakens Valley. The proposed attraction is intended to offer locals and visitors an accessible adventure experience combining panoramic views, the natural beauty of the valley and the rich history of the surrounding area. Beyond the zipline itself, the development vision includes supporting infrastructure such as walkways, parking, amenities, utilities and service areas. Plans also provide for facilities to support operations and enhance the visitor experience, including opportunities to showcase the historical significance of Fort Frederick and South End,

The current site preparations represent an important step towards improving the precinct and laying the groundwork for its future development. Address-

ing longstanding challenges relating to cleaning, maintenance and security is an integral part of the MBDA’s approach. Through the project, the MBDA aims to strengthen Nelson Mandela Bay’s tourism offering and give visitors new reasons to ex-

plore the inner city. The Baakens Zipline is one component of a broader effort to protect, improve and revitalise the city’s public and heritage spaces, helping ensure these areas increasingly serve residents, visitors and future generations.

From doubtful non-voter to first-time ballot cast Unemployment and disillusionment kept ALULUTHO MADOLO away from the polls in the last election. This year, the 23-year-old intern reporter for PE Express from Gqeberha, decided to vote — and explains why she believes young people should not let others decide their future.

After staying away from the polls once, Alulutho Madolo now believes voting is the only way to have a say in what determines young people’s future. PHOTO: NATASHA BEZUIDENHOUT

THE last time there were elections, I did not vote because I was unemployed and struggled to see how things could change. I did not see a need to vote because the unemployment rate was high and I was part of that statistic. I believed voting was a waste of time because political parties tended to make promises to win votes but ultimately failed to fulfil them. This year, however, I decided to vote, not because I suddenly believe that things will change overnight. Nor does it mean that I support everything political parties say. I believe that not voting allows

someone else to have a say in my future. If I believe that the current leading political party is not making a difference, I should vote for the political party that I trust to bring about change. For us young people, there are many issues that matter. Unemployment is one of them. The lack of opportunities for graduates is another issue. I understand why many young people say, “Nothing will change.” Having experienced unemployment, I know how frustrating and exhausting it can be, especially when you have qualifications. I believe that politicians do not understand what young people

are going through. I have started to see voting differently. If young people don’t vote because they are disappointed, decisions will still be made without their input. Voting gives them an opportunity to have a say in decisions that will determine their future. This year, I will look at what political parties say about jobs and unemployment. What opportunities will they offer for young people? Another important matter is service delivery. How will communities, especially here in the Eastern Cape, be helped to access reliable electricity, water and other basic services?

Porsche Club Eastern Cape donates R100,000 to local charity ESMI WINDWAAI THE Porsche Club Eastern Cape donated R50,000 each to Cheshire Homes and Christelik-Maatskaplike Raad (CMR), a child protection organisation based in Gqeberha. Cheshire Homes is a residential home for physically disabled adults, and CMR provides child protection and family preservation services. The funds were raised through the Porsche Club Parade. Raffles were held for various items, and Detail My Ride, a Gqeberha-based vehicle detailing company, contributed the money raised from a Porsche car wash event at the Courtyard Hotel. Armand Jansen van Rensburg from Detail My Ride said his team had washed more than a hundred Porsches between Tuesday, 22 September, and Wednesday, 23 September. Karl Illenberger, president of the Porsche Club Eastern Cape,

then significantly boosted the total, making the dual donation possible. Supporting CMR was a request from Shawn Heat, owner of Detail My Ride and one of the main sponsors of the Porsche Club Parade. The club has enjoyed a long-standing friendship with Cheshire Homes, and it was important for these residents to have a lovely home, the club said. Donations to non-profit organisations (NPOs) are a regular part of the club's activities, and its members actively support this commitment. Illenberger said, "Helping people with disabilities is a matter close to my heart. I know what it means to a person when someone cares for them, and that involves a great deal of hard work for the care staff. We never know whether we might need this help ourselves one day, which is why this commitment is so important to all of us at the Porsche Club."

Cheshire Homes received a R50,000 donation from the Porsche Club Eastern Cape President, Karl Illenberger (middle). With him at the handover were Lafras Moolman and Deidre Burger, manager of Cheshire Homes. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Locals shine at SA Irish Dancing Champs SIX young dancers from the Celtic Classical Dance Academy in Gqeberha achieved outstanding results at the South African Irish Dancing Championships in Johannesburg from 25–27 September 2026. Competing before international adjudicators from Ireland and London, the dancers impressed in the Bun 1 Priomh Comórtas, with Lathi-tha Tele taking first place, Ariana Rockman second, Willow Kruger third, Holly Fourie fourth and Emilia Prinsloo sixth. Anja Visser also secured first place in the Tus 3 Priomh Comórtas. Their teacher, Joanne Kerr, a qualified TCRG Irish dance teacher, expressed her pride in the dancers’ dedication and achievements. Kerr is passionate about making Irish dancing accessible to children from disadvantaged communities in the Eastern Cape. Through her classes at Toynbee Ballet Academy in Gelvandale, she hopes to create more opportunities for young dancers, with fundraising needed to assist with registration, competition fees and travel expenses. For Kerr, success goes beyond trophies. It is about building confidence and ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their potential.

Jacobs, a member of the Eastern Province Natural Bodybuilding Association (EPNBBA) team, claimed the division at the championships held at Kraaifontein Town Hall on 3 October. His victory also secured his selection for the South African team that will compete at the INBA/PNBA World Championships in Šamorín, Slovakia, from 18 to 20 June 2027. The international competition will give Jacobs the opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage after his success at the national championships. EPNBBA also celebrated success through Arcadia bodybuilder, Jose Ferreira, who won the Bantamweight division at the same championships. Ferreira’s victory added another national title to the EPNBBA team’s results at the Cape Town event. For the two local bodybuilders, the championships provided an opportunity to test themselves against competitors from across the country, with Jacobs now set to continue his preparations for next year’s world championships. Jacobs and Ferreira were supported at the event by family and loved ones, including Ferreira’s girlfriend, Roshin Bredenkamp, and his father, Richard.
