THE Department of Land Reform and Rural Development says 74 outstanding land claims in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metrostill need to be processed.
The update was shared duringa ministerial stakeholder engagementatNangoza Jebe Hall in NewBrighton on Monday, 22 June.
According to the department, theengagement formspart of ongoing efforts to assess progressinlandreform programmes, identify challenges and find ways to better support land claimants and rural communities across the province.
The meeting brought togetherbeneficiaries, government officials and community members to discussthe status of land claims and other land reform matters.
Land claims are linked to the forced removals of black South Africans underapartheid laws, including theNatives Land Actof1913 and the Group Areas Act of 1950,which resulted in many families losing theirhomesand land
Addressingattendees,Minister of LandRe-
form andRural Development Mzwanele Nyhontso said the department was working to convert lease agreements into title deeds, allowingbeneficiariestoobtain full ownership of theirland.
Nyhontso said this formed part of the government’s efforts to expand land ownership and providebeneficiaries with greater security over thelandthey occupy.
He added that President Cyril Ramaphosa had instructedthe department to accelerate theprocess.
Speaking at the event, NelsonMandela Bay Executive MayorBabalwa Lobishesaid land restitution was not onlyabout restoring land, but alsoabout creating opportunities for communities.
“Reclaiming land is aformofeconomic action. It is partofhealing and creating economic opportunities,” she said.
Lobishe encouraged beneficiaries to make productive use of the land they receive through the restitution process rather than selling it for compensation.
She said the government would provide support to help beneficiaries use their land in
ways that could generate income and benefit their families.
Eastern Cape Chief Director of the Regional Land ClaimsCommission, Zama Memela, said approximately 17,000 land claims had been lodged across the provincesince the land restitution process began.
He said the department continued to make progress in settling claims.
Among those attending the engagement was Motherwell resident Barbara Wathani, who said she remained concerned about the progress of some land claims.
Speaking to the Express,Wathani saidshe attended the meeting because she was aware of cases where people had allegedly been scammed by individuals posing as officials involvedinthe land claims process.
She said she wasalso seekingclarity on a matter involving land in Tsitsikamma that she believes belonged to her father.According to Wathani, distant relatives had allegedly received compensation related to the property.
Wathani said she hoped the engagement would help her better understand the status of the matter and provide away forward.

A19-YEAR-OLD youth was arrested after he was found in arestricted area near the St Albans Management Area while wearing an Emergency Support Team (EST)-branded shirt, despite having no affiliation with the Department of Correctional Services.
The incident formed part of recent securityinterventions at the facility, which also led to the recovery of a large quantity of suspected contraband during aseparate search operation. According to the Department of Correctional Services, EST members conducting routine patrols noticed the man in abushy area behind the Chicken Project. The area is restricted and not accessible to unauthorised persons.
Asecurity search was conducted, during which officials allegedly found 28 small balls of dagga and one tikpipe in his possession. The suspect was also found wearing an EST-branded shirt.Officials confirmed that he was not employed by the Department and had no authorisation to possess departmental clothing.
The man and the confiscated items werehanded over to the SouthAfrican Police Service (SAPS). An arrest was effected for alleged trespassing and possession of illegal substances. In aseparate operation at the Chicken Project, officials conducted asurprise search after identifying areas requiring increased securityattention.
During the search, officials discovered suspected contraband concealed near the chicken cages. The items recovered included 340 Mandrax tablets,44dagga balls, 38 dagga “bompies”, one charger, four USB cables and three large tikbags containing more than 150 smaller bags.

The department added that the interventions demonstrate the commitment of officials to maintaining safe and secure correctional facilities.

ALOCAL husband-and-wife duo have defiedthe odds, navigating last-minute hurdles to be crowned the undisputed championsofthe 2026 Global Pizza Challenge South Africa.
Misty and Warren Fry, co-owners of Arkenstone Frys (incorporating Misty’s Pizza and Bistro) in Gqeberha, took home both the Overall Winner title and the Best Vegetarian/Vegan Pizza award at the grand finale, held at the CapeTown International Convention Centre (CTICC)during the Africa Food Show.
However, theirjourney to the top stepofthe podium was almost derailedbefore it even began.
The drama began on the eveof their departure when the couple

discovereda devastatingbooking error. Theircar hire and flights had accidentallybeen reservedfor the wrongdate.Stranded in Gqeberha with no transportation and no valid airlinetickets, they quickly realisedthatall standard flights to Cape Town were completely soldout
The only remaining last-minute tickets came at abrutal premium, costingmore than double the anticipatedrate.Overwhelmed by the sudden financial strain and mounting logistical chaos, the couple reached abreakingpoint and made thedifficult decision to withdraw from thecompetition entirely.
Amessageoffaith
Then, atimely phone callchanged everything. The couple received a call from theirpastor. While the conversation initially centred on withdrawingbecause of the immense stress, the pastor experienced whatthe couple describe as a moment of divine intervention.
Her perspective shifted completely during the call, and she strongly urged them to step out in faith and go. Buoyed by the powerful message,Misty and Warren found asecond wind, absorbed the exorbitant ticket costs and boarded a plane to Cape Town. The challenges did not stop when they landed
Back at their Gqeberha base, Misty —the culinary mastermind behind therecipes —alwaysbakes her pizzas in atraditional woodfired oven, relyingonintense, smoky heat.Atthe CTICC exhibition floor, however, they wereprovided withacommercial electric deck oven. Knowingthat electric
ovens distribute heat differently and lack the natural smokiness of awood-fired oven, Misty had to rewriteher execution plan on the fly. Sherapidly adjusted her dough hydration and altered ingredient ratios to mimicthe textureand depthofflavour usually delivered by wood embers.
Teamworktriumphs
When the clock started ticking, Warrentook the reinsasthe chef on the competition floor, handling all the bakingand cooking underintense pressure. Misty took her place in the audience, serving as his ultimate supportsystem. Throughout the high-stakes cookoff, she filmed the entire process while continuously shouting words of encouragement.
Warren executed Misty’s modified blueprint to perfection, presenting the judges with an authentic Romano-style pizza characterised by its thin, airy and intensely flavourful crust.
To offset the electric oven's baking profile, the masterpiece featured: fourpremium meats, adding rich, savoury depth; fourdistinct cheeses, melted into aperfectly balanced, creamy base.
Fresh wild rocket scattered on top immediately after baking, cutting through the richness with asharp, peppery crunch and afinishing rack of freshly ground black pepper.
The riskpaid off. When the international panel of judges took their firstbites, the bookingstress, high flightcosts and oven anxieties melted away. The balance of flavours

and flawless execution impressed the panel, earning Arkenstone Frys the ultimate title
“Againstall odds and fuelled by a timely word of faith and incredible teamwork, we didn’tjust participate—weconquered,” the couple

Algoa Majorettes, the only majorette team currently operating in Gqeberha, have qualified for the South African Majoretteand Cheerleading Association(SAMCA)National Championships in Johannesburg from 5to7 July.
Theachievementissignificant not only for the eight girls who make up the team but also for the growth of asportthat has largelybeen absent from the cityfor decades.
While often associated with colourful performances and marching displays, majorettes is arecognised competitive sport in South Africa and internationally.
The sport requires discipline, fitness and teamwork, with athletes competing in categories such as baton, mace, flag and pom-pom routines that are judged on technical execution, synchronisation, choreography andpresentation.
According to Algoa Majorettes coach Francisca Bester, the last active majorette teams in Gqeberha competed during the 1980s.
“As anewly establishedteam, it has beenchallengingtopromote the sport, as it is relatively unknown in our city,” she said. Algoa Majorettes currently consist of eight primaryschool girls aged 12 and 13 from schools acrossGqeberha.
While some team members have several years of experience
in the sport, others only started competing this year.
Despite their varying levels of experience, the team has quicklyestablished itself as one of the Eastern Cape’s top-performing squads.
The girls competed throughout the season in league competitions hosted by the Eastern Cape Majorette and CheerleadingAssociation (ECMCA),participating in four categories: Large Flag, Large Non-Prop/ Pom, Classic Baton and Small Mace.
“The team participated in various league competitions over the past few months and competed in four different categories,” said Bester.
Their consistent performances earned them an overall second-place finishfor the season and secured qualification for
the national championships
For the athletes, the opportunity to compete at nationals represents far more than acompetition.
“Participating in the SAMCA National Championships is the highestlevel of competition in the sport, excludinginternational participation with the national team, and it is agreat honour to be selected for such aprestigious event,” Bester explained.
Qualification is based on performances throughout the season, with only the top teams from each province earning the righttorepresent theirregion at the championships
As the only team from Gqeberhacompeting at the event, the girls areproudtocarry the city’s name onto the national stage.
“The team is excited andhonoured to represent their schools, city and province at theNational Championships,” said Bester.
“They look forward to showcasing their routines, making new friendsand learning from teams fromother provinces.
They hope to putGQonthe map as aseriouscompetitor in the sportand to make everyone in the city proud.”
Like manyamateur sports clubs, Algoa Majorettes faceongoing challenges. Travel costs, competitionexpenses andequipment needsrequire constant fundraising efforts, particularly because competitions are currently hostedoutsidethe city.
“We have to work very hard to raisefunds, as travelcostsare high and competitions currently take placeoutsidethe city,” Bester said

“Wehope to havethe whole of GQ behind us and to spark arenewed interest in thesport among theyouth,” said Bester.
Looking beyondthis year’s championship, the clubhas ambitiousplansfor thefuture of majorettes in Gqeberha
“The dreamistogrow the sport in Gqeberha at both primary andhighschoollevels, while alsobecoming thepreferred majorette team that creates hopeand opportunities for theyouth of ourcity,” she said For Bester, majorettes are about far morethan routines and competitions.
