Acaseofstatutory rape has been opened againsta former male teacheratSimond Private School after allegations surfaced thatheengagedinsexual activity with a Grade 7learner.
This week, someonefamiliar with the incident, took it uponthemselves to file acomplaint with the policeafteritbecame evidentthatnocomplainthad been lodged with the police, despite previous feedback from the schoolstating otherwise. Theanonymous source, whodoes notwant to be named at this stage,said they hadnoother option buttoopena case so that justice can prevail. "Thelaw expects me to report anycrimeinvolving achild to the police or Iwill alsobe guilty of it by remaining silent."
Thealleged sexualmisconduct is believed to have happened during aschool camp in Durbanville in late Marchthis year. Paarl Post previously reported that the accused teacher wasallegedly caught red-handed by agroup of Grade12 learners whilehewas "having sex with aGrade7girl in atent",according to another credible sourceclose to theschool Theteacher resigned shortly afterthese allegations came to light.

Theschool previously assuredparents thatthe resignation of the accused teacher doesnot affect the investigation process goingforward.

Plans to establish the Paarl Africa Underground Laboratory (Paul)which will be Africa’s first underground laboratory to study dark matternear the Huguenot Tunnel outside Paarl remain in their earlystages, withnoconfirmed start datefor construction as key approvalsand related infrastructure projects are still pending.
According to Lwando Mahlasela, media relationsmanager for the South African National Roads Agency Limited(Sanral), the project has not yet reached the formal applicationphase required for approval.
“ThePaul consortium has met with Sanral and discussedtheir basic ideas, but it has not progressedtothe point where a formal application, containingthe necessary technical detail, was submitted to Sanralfor consideration andapproval,” Mahlasela said
The proposedprojectisbeing driven by aconsortium led by StellenboschUniversity(SU), and Sanral has emphasised that it plays no active role in developing the facility itself.

Any potential risks would need to be carefully assessed due to the tunnel’s status as acontrolled traffic environment.
“From atraffic safety point of viewthe tunnel is acontrolled environment and all potential risks need to be carefully considered,” he said.
Crucially, the timeline forthe laboratory is also tied to planned upgrades to the Hu-
guenot Tunnel, which remain uncertain.
Althoughtenders have been issued for the upgrade of the North Bore tunnel, Mahlasela confirmed thatthe contract has notyet been awarded, meaning thecommencement date for those works, and by extensionthe laboratory, is not yet known.
“The commencement date willbeaffected by the planned construction work pertaining to the upgrade of thetunnel [and that] award hasnot been made. Therefore, the commencement date of theplanned upgrade work is at present not known,”he said.

Theprogramme forms part of the newly launchedTomorrowland Foundation Music and Arts School at the Langrug Community Centre (LCC), in Franschhoek.
Through music, dance andartistic expression,the school hopes to create an environment where young peopleare encouragedtogrow in confidence and explore their potential.Lessons will be by ateam of teachers, artists and facilitators, with astrong emphasis on recruiting and training individualsfrom within the Langrug community.Thisapproach is intended not only to support learners, but alsotostrengthen local ownership andcreate employment opportunities.

Ongeagdie ondersteuning wat een van die beskuldigdes op plaaslike gebied geniet vanweësybelowendespel op die rugbyveld, hetsommige van die kommentare wat teenoor die beweerde slagoffer gemaak is ’n bittersmaak gelaat, veral waardie samelewing homself vandag bevind met hoë geslagsgeweldsyfers. Dit is ook deels die rede hoekomdie saak soveel belangstelling wek.
Die beskuldigdes word ook in hulrugbygemeenskappe as sterrebeskouendien dikwels as ’n simboolvan hoop en motivering vir jong kinders. Tog word die blaam dikwels op die mediageplaas oor waarom hulle oorhierdie soort voorvalle berig.Die media het ’n verantwoordelikheid om oor sake wat in openbare belangis, soos hierdie een,teberig en waar ’n saak dikwels op sosiale media verhoorenuitspraak gelewerword voordatdit voor enige landdros gedien het, berig die media deurentyd verantwoordelikenmet die nodige sensitiwiteit oor wat in die hof geopenbaar en as bewysstukke voorgelê word. Dusbepaal hy hombydie feitevan die saak, eerder as bespiegeling.Die realiteit in enigesaak bly egterdat slegs die beskuldigdes en die klaer weet watregtig diewaarheid is; die hof is dus daar om te bepaal wat bo redelike twyfel gebeur het entoe te sien dat geregtigheid geskied. DieBreytenbach-klassieke-konsertreeks bereik Sondag 17 Mei sy hoogtepunt met ’n simfoniese samekoms,’ngrootskaalse samewerkingskonsert wat by die CR-sentrum by die Hoërskool Paarl Gimnasiumsal plaasvind.
Hierdiebesondere geleentheid bring skoolkorevan reg oor dieDrakensteinvallei byeen –nie om teen mekaar mee te ding nie, maar in samewerking.Die eerste helfte van die program bestaan uit optredesdeur die onderskeie skoolkore, waarna die Wynland- Filharmoniese Orkes (WPO) die verhoog betree.Die konsertword afgesluitmet ’n massakoor
van 900 jongsangers saam metdie orkes.
Die deelnemende skole sluit in die Laerskool Hugo Rust, Hugenote Laerskool, dielaerskole WA Joubert, Paulus Joubert, Paarl Gimnasium,Courtrai, Drakenstein en die Meisieskool Paarl, Hugenote Hoërskool en die Hoërskool PaarlGimnasium
Die konsertisdeel vandie Breytenbach-klassieke-konsertreeks, ’n inisiatief van die Breytenbach-sentrum, wat daarop gemik is om klassieke musiek toeganklik te maak, nuwegehorete ontwikkel en ’n platform te skep waar professionele kunstenaars en jong,opkomende musici saam kan optree.

Dalweide tops in spelling bout
The 2026 Paarl Community Excellence SpellingContest, heldon25 April, brought together some of the brightest young spellers fromacross thegreater Paarl area in acelebration of language, learning, and determination. The event, whichbegan with 32 participants, showcased not only academic excellence but also the confidenceand resilience of learners willing to take on the challengeof competitive spelling.
After three intense rounds,Tristin Jaftas emerged as the overallwinner, demonstrating exceptional spellingability and composure underpressure.Close behind was runner-up Alivia Prinsloo, whose strongperformance earned well-deservedrecognition. The titleof winning school was awarded to Dalweide Primary, marking aproud achievement for the institutionand its supporters
The competition was proudly supported, with major sponsorship from Dream11Cars,whosecontribution played akey role in making theevent possible.Their commitment to educational initiatives continuestohave a meaningful impact on local communities. Ahighlight of the day was the presence of Sophia Karriem from the Department of Education in the Cape Winelands District. She delivered aninspiring messagetoparticipants,encouraging themtopursue excellence and to view their involvement as astepping stone toward greater academic and personal success.
As the competition progressed,the
fieldwas narrowed down to the TopTen finalists,eachofwhomdemonstrated impressive skilland determination. These learnersstood outfor their preparation and poise, andthey represent the high standardofacademic talent present in the participating schools.
Allparticipants aretobecongratulated for their effort andcourage.Competinginsuch an event requires notonly knowledge but also confidence,and each learner who took part contributed to the successofthe day.
