A R465 million investment in water and sanitation services alone forms part of Drakenstein Municipality’s R4,4 billion budget for the 2025-’26 financial term tabled yesterday (Wednesday 28 May)
The budget – the municipality's largest to date – comprises a R3,7 billion operating budget and a R714 million capital budget.
The new approved tariffs are as follows: water (7,7%), refuse removal and sanitation (5,9%), electricity (10,32%) and property capped at (12,5%)
Executive Mayor Stephen Korabie affirmed that the municipality’s main objective is to deliver “excellent and affordable services” to all residents

Calls for ‘live’ council meetings

The GOOD party in Drakenstein Municipality has formally resubmitted a proposal to the municipal council's Speaker, Koos le Roux, calling for all future council meetings to be streamed live on major social media platforms.
The party argues that accross South Africa municipalities are increasingly embracing digital platforms to ensure residents have real-time access to council proceedings that directly impact their lives.
“Yet, in Drakenstein, the opposite remains the norm,” GOOD’s Caucus Whip in Drakenstein, Keegan Gertse, said.
According to Gertse the motion was first introduced last year when the party recommended that all council sittings be broadcast live across major social media platforms and displayed in all municipal buildings hosting administrative offices and public libraries.
“A legal opinion obtained from the South African Local Government Association (Salga) confirms that Drakenstein’s Rules of Order (2014) are outdated and urgently require revision
“These rules must be brought in line with Act No. 3 of 2021: Local Government: Municipal Structures Amendment Act, particularly Sections 29, 29A, 30, 37, 41, 56, 63, 79, and 81.

regulations now support the facilitation of virtual and hybrid council meetings, promoting greater inclusivity and transparency,” Gertse said.
He added: “In a time when citizens are demanding greater accountability from their elected officials, Drakenstein’s continued resistance to public access equates to shielding councillors from scrutiny, hiding behind concrete walls and closed doors.
“This is unacceptable Transparency, accessibility, and accountability are not buzzwords, they are principles of good
governance.
“These values must be consistently demonstrated through meaningful action, not selectively invoked for political gain.”
He argues that Drakenstein has the financial capacity to implement livestreaming.
“Ironically, the mayor’s annual budget speech is streamed live to communities, proving both the technical feasibility and public appetite for greater access. Why then are general and special council sittings, along with Section 80 committee
meetings, excluded?”
He said should their proposal be denied again, “it will be a clear signal that the Speaker and the current council leadership are more concerned with maintaining control over perception than enabling true transparency”
Speaker Le Roux has in the meantime clapped back at the party saying council meetings have always been transparent.
“All council meetings, unless dealing with a confidential item, are open to members of the public
“My office oversees the media and public attendees’ guest lists on a monthly basis and we can confirm that these gallery seats are regularly filled.
“Council agendas are provided to our libraries as well as published on the municipal website, www.drakenstein.gov za, for public scrutiny
“Every month, after Council meetings, the Executive Mayor and I conduct radio interviews on Council matters with the two main Drakenstein-based radio stations, Radio KC and Paarl FM,” Le Roux said in a statement.
He added: “My office can categorically state that the democratic principles of accountability, transparency and accessibility are prioritised and adhered to in Drakenstein.
"My office will consider, subject to what the budget implication is, proposed further measures if it can contribute to public participation and further enhance democratic principles.”

Wanneer die jeug van Paarl-Oos my sien, sien hulle nie altyd ’n polisieman nie. Dit is dus vir hulle gemakliker om met my te engage, want hulle sien die rugbyspeler en dan soms kan ek hulle op daai manier help. Ek dink die dissipline-aspek is uiters belangrik in rugby en ook in die polisie.”
Marsh het die Thurlow Marsh Easter Rugby Festival verlede jaar op die been gebring nadat hy vir jare daarvan gedroom het. Die doel vir die toernooi is om ander jongmanne die geleentheid te gee om hul talente ten toon te stel –spelers wat nie die kans kry om dit by ander rugbytoernooie te doen nie.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu released the latest crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024-’25 financial year, which covers the period 1 January to 31 March 2025, at a press conference in Pretoria last Friday (23 May)
Nationally, the data reflects a decrease in most crime categories compared to the previous quarter reported to the police
However, within the Drakenstein Municipality the majority of categories showed an upward trend
The provinces with the highest overall crime rates remain Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape, the latter still the most affected by gang-related activity
Within the Drakenstein municipal area Paarl and Paarl East police stations featured prominently among the top 30 stations with the highest number of reported crimes across eight categories
By contrast, Mbekweni, Wellington, Saron, and Gouda did not appear in any of the top 30 crime categories

Paarl East ranked second in the Western Cape and sixth nationally for reported sexual assault cases, while Paarl ranked fifth provincially and 11th nationally Both stations recorded no change compared to the same quarter last year

Volgens Donovan Joubert, die raad se Speaker, is daar op dié geslote vergadering besluit om nie die verslag van die eksterne ondersoeker te oorweeg nie.
“Daar is bevind dat die opdrag vir die ondersoek nie ingevolge ’n vorige raadsbesluit uitgevoer is nie.
“Die raad verseker inwoners dat ’n verklaring uitgereik sal word sodra die proses volledig afgehandel is
“Intussen bly die aangeleentheid vertroulik en geen verdere inligting kan tans bekend gemaak word nie," het hy by navraag aan Paarl Post gesê Joubert het nie verder uitgewei oor wat die volgende stap in die ondersoek is nie.
Hy het verder aangevoer dat Ingrid Barnard intussen waargeneem het as munisipale bestuurder in die distrik.
Sy vervang dus vir Wilhelm Markus, die direkteur vir gemeenskapsdienste by die Weskus-distriksmunisipaliteit, wat verlede maand met Prins se tydelike skorsing die waarnemende rol ingeneem het.
Die munisipaliteit wou verlede maand nie oor die aard en meriete van die
klagtes uitwei nie. Hy wou ook nie sê of enige ander amptenare saam met Prins vir die bewerings ondersoek is nie.

“Daar was ander senior amptenare wat meer as die munisipale bestuurder gekry het, dus het die raad nie fout daarmee gesien om die wanbalans in die salarisskaal uit te stryk nie.
“In die geval van die munisipale bestuurder het die provinsie die verhoging en betalings goedgekeur, op voorwaarde dat Prins se nuwe lone aan die salarisskaal van sy huidige termyn voldoen.
“Prins is egter toe ook betaal op grond van die 2017-’22-salarisskaal en die burgemeester het toe na die raad gekom vir hierdie betalings om goedgekeur te word – nadat die geld reeds betaal is en sy daarvoor geteken het. Sy [die burgemeester] het geensins omsigtigheid toegepas nie.
“Die munisipale bestuurder se verhogings moes aan die salarisskaal van sy huidige termyn voldoen. Sy het glo eers later besef dat die betalings teen die beslissing wat deur die provinsie gemaak is, gegaan het,” het die raadslid verlede maand verklap.

‘Enjoy Drakenstein’
Enjoy Drakenstein, a new local tourism initiative within the Drakenstein Municipality, recently travelled to Durban to attend the Africa's Travel Indaba, one of the biggest travel and tourism exhibitions in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tourism in the Drakenstein region has been facing challenges, primarily due to a lack of collaboration between the municipality and the private sector. This visit was therefore timely, as one of Drakenstein’s leading tourism partners, who also aims to serve on the newly proposed Drakenstein Tourism Advisory Board, participated to promote the area’s attractions.
Enjoy Drakenstein, along with Paarl Wine Route and Go Wellington, were invited by Drakenstein Municipality to join the indaba, held at the International Convention Centre in Durban from 13 to 15 May.
Hybré van Niekerk, founder and director of the Enjoy Drakenstein tourism initiative, said that attending the indaba provided opportunities for networking with tourism operators, destination marketing organisations, and potential investors.
"Participation in the annual Africa Travel Indaba is essential for any recognised local tourism association (LTA) As one of the continent’s premier platforms, the Indaba offers valuable opportunities to engage

En ek wonder: Is my ondersteuning vir die mense rondom my positief, of tree ek dalk soms soos ’n foutiewe GPS op? Gee ek hoop soos die sonneblom, of lyk ek soos ’n treurwilg wat self droogte in my gemoed beleef?

Beter toets vir leerlinglisensie
Die Wes-Kaapse Regering het Maandag (26 Mei) ’n mylpaal bereik in sy verbintenis tot veiliger paaie en beter dienslewering met die bekendstelling van die Gemeganiseerde Toetsstelsel vir Leerlinglisensies (CLLT) by die Beaufort-Wesbestuurslisensietoetssentrum.
“Om ons ekonomie te laat groei en meer werksgeleenthede te skep, moet ons verseker dat ons inwoners oor die nodige vaardighede beskik om aan die ekonomie deel te neem. ’n Rybewys is ’n belangrike vereiste vir baie poste, en daarom moet ons dit so maklik as moontlik maak vir al ons inwoners om hul rybewyse te bekom,” sê Isaac Sileku, die Wes-Kaapse minister van mobiliteit.
By die bekendstelling is ’n demonstrasie gedoen van die digitale toetstelsel wat die tradisionele handboek-metode vervang. Dié innovasie is daarop gemik om die leerlinglisensietoetsproses in die Wes-Kaap te transformeer.
Die nuwe stelsel word in vennootskap met die Padverkeersbestuurskorporasie (RTMC) geïmplementeer, met die doel om die gehalte van bestuurders op WesKaapse paaie te verbeter.
Voordele van die nuwe stelsel sluit in:
• Bevorder veiliger, meer verantwoordelike bestuur deur gestandaardiseerde
toetsing;
• Ondersteun aansoekers met gehoorgestremdhede deur aanlyn instruksies in verskeie tale – sonder dat ’n tolk nodig is; en
• Lewer vinniger en akkurater resultate deur onmiddellike digitale verwerking.
“Hierdie is nie bloot ’n tegnologiese opgradering nie – dit is ’n waardegedrewe transformasie. Die stelsel verseker dat elke aansoeker, ongeag vermoë, met regverdigheid en waardigheid behandel word,” sê Sileku.
Die toetsterminale, elk beveilig met vingerafdrukverifikasie, is direk gekoppel aan die nasionale verkeersinligtingstelsel (NaTIS) en genereer regverdige toetsvrae. Resultate word outomaties geverifieer en veilig verwerk, wat akkuraatheid en data-integriteit verbeter.
Die CLLT-klaskamer bestaan uit aanlyn selfdiensstasies, en ’n 6kVA onversteurde kragtoevoer om kontinuïteit tydens kragonderbrekings te verseker.
Alle Wes-Kaapse bestuurslisensietoetssentrums buite die metro is reeds met die nuwe CLLT-stelsel toegerus, en die Wes-Kaapse departement van mobiliteit is tans in gesprek met die Stad Kaapstad oor die uitrol van dié nuwe stelsel
Inwoners kan afsprake maak vir leerlinglisensietoetse by ’n bestuurslisensietoetssentrum en vir hul toetse voorberei met gratis aflaaibare studiegidse van die www.natis.gov.za-webtuiste.
Na wie is Horakstraat in die Paarl vernoem?

La Motte se stryd nie om

Hoewel die hooggeregshof onlangs ten gunste van die La Motte-rugbyklub beslis het ná sy versoek om van die WP-rugbyunie weg te breek, is die stryd vir hierdie klub se lidmaatskap nog nie verby nie nadat die Boland-rugbyunie (BRU) ’n spesiale algemene vergadering belê het waarop hy glo sy 2024-besluit om affiliasie aan La Motte toe te staan, sal “hersien”.
Die vergadering word Saterdag (31 Mei) gehou
Die hooggeregshof het op 6 Mei ’n dringende aansoek deur La Motte teen die Westelike Provinsie-rugbyunie aangehoor, wie se argument was dat die BRU nie die reg gehad het om LaMotte se affiliasie-aansoek te aanvaar nie aangesien die klub binne die WP se grense val
Die hof het beslis dat La Motte nou in die BRU se Gemeenskapskild-kompetisie ingesluit mag word
Die BRU het op 30November verlede jaar op ’n jaarvergadering La Motte se aansoek om affiliasie aanvaar
Netwerk24 het egter verlede week berig dat Attie Heyns, die BRU se regsverteen-
woordiger, daarop gewys het dat die besluit van November verlede jaar teen die unie se grondwet indruis
Wat volgens Heyns nie ten tyde van die besluit in gedagte gehou is nie, is ’n ooreenkoms tussen die BRU, WPRU en SWD in 2013 – dat ’n klub nie tussen twee unies mag skuif sonder dat dit albei betrokkenes se goedkeuring wegdra nie
Dit was om potensiële probleme rakende die oorvleueling van rugbygrense uit te skakel
Heyns sê dat die BRU “ten volle” aan die hofbevel gehoor gee “Die BRU vervul sy fidusiêre plig deur dit weer voor die algemene vergadering te plaas,” het hy gesê
Paarl Post het vroeër berig dat LaMotte nog altyd volgehou het hy was nooit ’n amptelike filiaal van die WP-rugbyunie nie, maar is bloot toegelaat om aan WP-kompetisies deel te neem
Die WP-administrasie se argument was dat die BRU nie die reg gehad het om LaMotte se affiliasie-aansoek te aanvaar nie aangesien die klub binne die WP se grense val
LaMotte het egter daarop gewys dat die BRU reeds klubs soos Dennegeur en Lanquedoc All Stars asook klubs in die Drakenstein- en Stellenbosch-
munisipale gebiede as lede het Volgens LaMotte was daar geen geldige redes, behalwe die beweerde grens-oorskryding, wat hul affiliasie met die BRU kon verhoed nie
Dit blyk egter nou asof politieke geskille onder die onderskeie unies – en dalk selfs die BRU self – ’n onsekere toekoms skets wat LaMotte se lidmaatskap betref
LaMotte was vir ’n jaar (tussen 20072008) by die BRU geaffilieer en het in 2009 by die WP-rugbyunie aangesluit
Ná etlike jare se oproepe deur die Franschhoekse rugbygemeenskap vir die klub om van die WP weg te breek, het dié proses vroeg verlede jaar begin

Die welstand en versorging van kinders is ’n ongelooflike belangrike taak waarin almal ’n verantwoordelikheid het, veral te midde kinderbeskermingsweek wat van 29 Mei tot 5 Junie plaasvind.
Die hofsaak rakende die verdwyning van die sesjarige Joshlin Smith van Saldanhabaai het onlangs opnuut die kollig op kindersorg geplaas, veral omdat bevind is die onskuldige kind se ma het ’n hand in haar verdwyning gehad Kelly Smith het haar dogtertjie se lewe as net R20000 werd geag toe sy die weerlose kind in Februarie verlede jaar aan vreemdelinge verkoop het.
Soos klein Joshlin bestaan baie ander kinders wat ’n tekort aan behoorlike omgee, versorging en beskerming het. Die tema van hierdié week is juis “werk saam om geweld teen kinders te beëindig”.
Volgens Leonice Fisher, ’n maatskaplike hulpwerker by Badisa Wellington, is kindersorg en die beskerming van kinders nie net hierdie week belangrik nie, maar elke dag. Badisa is ’n organisasie sonder winsoogmerk wat verbind is tot maatskaplike ontwikkeling deur gemeenskapsgebaseerde programme in die Wes-, Noord- en Oos-Kaap.
“Gemeenskappe kan hande vat met organisasies deur aan te meld wanneer hulle oplet dat kinders nie goed versorg word nie. Om te sê ‘dinge is nie fine by my buurvrou se huis nie – ek kom agter die kinders is vuil, hulle is laat op straat of word geslaan; ek is ’n bietjie bekommerd; kan julle uitreik en kyk of alles fine is?’ As jy ’n saak aanmeld, maak dit nie van jou ’n piemper nie. Ons moet teruggaan na ‘my kind is jou kind’. Dit is hoe ons kan veg vir goeie kindersorg in die gemeenskap. Die skole moet inisiatief kan neem en ons het almal ’n verantwoordelikheid om kindermishandeling en verwaarlosing aan te meld.”
Fisher sê mense wat hulp kort wanneer dit by kindersorg kom, moenie bang wees om uit te reik na organisasies soos Badisa nie.
“Dit is belangrik dat mense moet weet van die hulpbronne wat beskikbaar is en watter stappe teen ’n ouer wat kinders mishandel of verwaarloos, gedoen kan
word. Dit geld ook vir die ouer wat dalk bang is om te sê ‘ek kan nie na my kind kyk nie – wat is die alternatief?’. Africa Property Group (APG), a property management company based in Paarl, finds itself under scrutiny once again following allegations from residents, this time from a housing estate in Milnerton.
Residents of Ascot Terraces claim that APG's owner, Arusha Naidoo, refuses to step down as managing agent, despite the termination of the company’s mandate on 21 August 2024 during a Special General Meeting (SGM) Paarl Post previously reported on APG, which was appointed as the managing agent at De Chavonnes, an apartment complex in Paarl, during early 2023.
Dawid du Toit, a concerned home owner and resident at De Chavonnes, told Paarl Post that this appointment was unconstitutional, as no Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held to vote on the matter.
Naidoo, in email correspondence with Paarl Post, confirmed that APG continues to manage De Chavonnes.
According to home owners of Ascot Terraces, who wish to stay anonymous, issues with APG arose in April 2024 at the estate's AGM.
The anonymous home owners allege that prior to the AGM, Naidoo had been "canvassing" owners of Ascot Terraces promising reduced levies.
"Before being appointed as
managing agent, she [Naidoo] attended the AGM, along with two of her [business associates].
They all had proxies to vote; a highly peculiar action considering their vested interests; [and] trustees who were pro-APG were voted in.”
"Within a month [APG] had fired the existing managing agent (with no notice given to the agent nor Ascot Terraces residents) and employed APG," the home owners told Paarl Post
Since then, a group of home owners formally requested that APG and the then-serving trustees convene a SGM, supported by signatures from over 50% of residents.
This request was not honoured by APG or the trustees of the Body Corporate (BC) at the time, prompting the concerned residents to exercise their "legal
right to convene the SGM independently".
The residents argued that because the SGM was not granted by the trustees, it was within their rights to call a SGM where they effectively immediately terminated APG's services.
With the support of the majority of residents, the concerned residents subsequently issued a notice to APG after the SGM on 12 August 2024 and elected new trustees.
"Despite this development, APG has refused to step down, and Naidoo continues to assert that she remains the rightful managing agent," they said.
Since APG’s appointment as managing agent, the company has allegedly never convened an in-person meeting with residents, despite repeated requests. APG, instead, insists on virtual meetings, despite many elderly residents being unable to participate due to technological constraints. "The estate, which had excellent financial reserves prior to this, now owes sub-
stantial amounts in water and refuse.”

The residents report that APG installed an Accentronix access system an electronic gate control system utilising biometric access without obtaining the consent of all residents. Those who did not consent were subsequently denied access to their homes.
In an effort to ensure all residents could enter and exit the complex, the gate was switched to manual operation However, this created a security risk. In response, APG installed a lock on the gate motor, preventing residents from placing the gate on manual.
This led to the involvement of the Milnerton police on 10
April who instructed both the trustees and APG not to deny residents access. Following this intervention, a new gate motor was installed at a cost of R8 000 to the estate
"There has been no interruption to access at Ascott Terraces. The driveway gate has remained fully functional throughout. Certain individuals deliberately obstructed the gate sensor as they refused to register on the Accentronix access system a standard security requirement," Naidoo said in her response.
Ascot Terraces's BC commented that APG is the "legally, and validly appointed, managing agent of Ascot Terraces" and that the company's "mandate to act as the managing agents of the Body Corporate was re-affirmed at the latest AGM".
According to Naidoo the allegations made against her are "unfounded and fail to present a complete and accurate reflection of the circumstances".
She also provided proof that she is registered with the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA). Paarl Post could not verify this with the PPRA by the time of publication.
The Community Schemes Ombud Service (CSOS) confirmed that they are currently investigating four complaints against AGP and Naidoo, of which one was filed by Ascot Terraces residents.

Drie beseer by Franschhoek
Twee motorfietsongelukke die afgelope naweek in die Franschhoekpas het drie motorfietsryers in 'n kritieke toestand gelaat, insluitend een wat ongeveer 100 m deur die lug geslinger is voordat hy in die kloof beland het waar hy later met ’n helikopter gered is.
Die twee motorfietsongelukke het onderskeidelik die afgelope Vrydag (23 Mei) omstreeks 17:00 en Sondag (25 Mei) om 11:00 plaasgevind.
Volgens Kurt Maske, 'n ER24-werker wat op albei tonele was, het reddingswerkers ongeveer drie ure lank die afgelope Sondag onverpoos gewerk om die motorfietsryer, wat alleen op sy snelmotorfiets deur die pas gery het, uit die kloof te red.
Maske het verduidelik dat die motorfietsbestuurder in die rigting van Franschhoek gery het toe hy beheer daaroor verloor het naby Jan Joubert's Gat, en
sowat 100 m deur die lug geslinger is voordat hy in die kloof te lande gekom het.
Weens geen selfoonsein in die pas nie, was 'n lid van die publiek wat die ongeluk aanskou het, genoop om tot by 'n punt te ry waar daar ontvangs was voordat Maske en sy span ingelig is.

Delheim: Wine meets ‘shrooms’
On the picturesque slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, a unique seasonal tradition unfolds each year as autumn’s first chill settles over the Cape Winelands. At Delheim Wine Estate conservation and culinary adventure blend seamlessly during the estate’s popular mushroom foraging hunts, guided by co-owner and passionate conservationist Nora Thiel.
“There's something magical about the moment when you spot that first pine ring or cep hiding beneath the forest floor,” explains Thiel, whose eyes light up when discussing the wild mushrooms that populate the estate's old pine forest planted decades ago by her father, the legendary Spatz Sperling.
The ancient slopes of Simonsberg Mountain, and particularly the estate’s pine forests, become a treasure trove of wild fungi during autumn months. According to Thiel, who learnt the delicate art of mushroom foraging from South African mushroom guru Gary Goldman, the appearance of these earthy delicacies depends on a perfect symphony of natural conditions.
“Mushrooms need humidity to grow, but they also require a shock to their system,” she explained. “When the first autumn rains and cold arrive, followed by sudden warmer days, the little heads of the mushrooms start popping out.”
She shared another fascinating insight: “When the moon is full it’s an added bonus. Mushrooms consist of 80% water, and it’s evident that the full moon affects the showing of their heads.” This connection between lunar cycles and fungal growth adds another layer of mystique to the foraging experience.
But be warned, the forager’s golden rule is safety first!
With a developed confidence in identifying certain edible varieties Thiel emphasises caution above all else. “Some poisonous mushrooms can be mistaken for edible ones, and this can lead to serious trouble,” she warned. Her golden rule for amateur foragers is simple, but potentially life-saving: “If you are not 100% sure leave that mushroom be.”
One of the most intriguing aspects of South Africa’s mushroom story is the origin of many prized culinary species. Thiel explained there are actually very few endemic mushroom
species in South Africa Most of the varieties hunted for their culinary value arrived more than a century ago, hidden in the soil of oak trees imported from Europe or even in horse feed brought by early settlers. This continental connection has created a unique fungal landscape that draws enthusiasts from across the country.

Die Vroue-Landbou Vereniging van Kaapland (VLVK) vier vanjaar ’n merkwaardige mylpaal – 95 jaar van ononderbroke diens, gemeenskapsbou en die bemagtiging van vroue. Twee Paarl-reuse het die afgelope naweek weer eens bewys waarom hulle ongetwyfeld die twee beste rugbyskole in die land is. Die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl het ’n oortuigende 3626 oorwinning oor Paul Roos behaal, terwyl Paarl Gimnasium vir HTS Drostdy met ’n verstommende 92-12 oorwinning bloedneus geslaan het.
In ’n wedstryd vol dramatiese wendinge het Boishaai die oorwinning behaal nadat hy op een stadium ’n groot agterstand van 9-21 gehad het.
Die held van die dag was ongetwyfeld Boishaai se heelagter, Mark Grindlay. Sy skopstewel was absoluut betroubaar en het hom ’n indrukwekkende persoonlike bydrae van 21 punte besorg.
Paul Roos het die wedstryd sterk begin en dit het aanvanklik gelyk asof die besoekers die oorhand sou kry. Gebrekkige dissipline het egter tot Paul Roos se ondergang gelei. Die wending in die wedstryd het vroeg in die tweede helfte ge-
kom toe Gershom Pieters (slot) vir Boishaai oorgebars het vir ’n drie wat die tuisspan vir die eerste keer laat voorloop het. Gimnasium het ’n uitstaande vertoning gelewer om HTS Drostdy met ’n verpletterende 92-12-telling te klop. Die tuisspan het van die begin af gedomineer en reeds teen halftyd ’n gemak-
like 52-7 voorsprong opgebou. Markus Muller (13) het sy staal getoon met twee drieë en vyf suksesvolle doelskoppe vir ’n persoonlike telling van 20 punte. Die Hoërskool Gimnasium bly dus op nommer een op die nasionale skolerugby-ranglys, en Boishaai tweede.
Paarl set for mounted games
The Western Cape is preparing to make equestrian history this June when it hosts its first-ever South African Western Mounted Games (SAWMGA) Regional Championships at Igqala Park near Paarl from 14-16 June.
This landmark event represents a significant milestone for the sport in the region, bringing together riders and horses in a thrilling display of speed, agility, and precision that has captivated equestrian enthusiasts across South Africa Western Mounted Games is a fast-paced equestrian discipline that tests both horse and rider combinations through a
series of timed events requiring exceptional coordination and skill. Over the weekend, competitors will tackle all 13 official SAWMGA games, demonstrating the remarkable partnership that develops between horse and rider.
The competition emphasises fair and accurate time measurement, ensuring that the fastest and most precise partnerships are rewarded for their efforts.
Event organisers are particularly proud of the family-oriented nature of Western Mounted Games, welcoming participants of all ages and skill levels.
The competition is designed to be inclusive, with day riders welcome to participate through

Roses het verlede Saterdag (24 Mei) ’n spanningsvolle wedstryd teen Newton op die Boland-stadion met 36-34 gewen. Die tuisspan moes van agter af hard terugbaklei nadat hy teen rustyd met 19-24 agter was. Roses se voltooiing van die eerste ronde van die Grootuitdaag-kampioenskap met volpunte is ’n merkwaardige prestasie wat sy ambisie bevestig.
Jayden van Wyk het vroeg in die wedstryd vir Newtons ’n drie gaan druk. Dit is deur Wilfred Bowers verdoel, wat Newton met 7-0 laat voorloop het. Roses het onder druk gebly, maar teruggeslaan met ’n kragdrie deur die hardlopende en fisieke Denvor “Stone” Cloete.
Briljante spel deur Lee Grant Fortuin, die heelagter van die Roses, het die toeskouers vroeg opgewonde laat regop sit. Newton het in die eerste helfte die oorhand gehad met vinnige spel en goeie samewerking tussen sy agterspelers.
Newton het verskeie kere deur Roses se verdediging gebreek en die kleedkamers teen rustyd met ’n vyfpunt-voorsprong betree.
Soos in die eerste helfte was dit weer die Newton Bombelas
wat ná die pouse eerste punte aangeteken het.
Roses het egter in die tweede helfte sy ritme gevind Hy het sy voorry benut en met geduldige fasespel vorentoe beweeg, wat hom die agterstand geleidelik laat inhaal het.
’n Drie in die laaste minute van die wedstryd – deur Easton Arendse – het die wentelling aan Roses besorg.
Die sege is ’n groot hupstoot vir Roses, wat met sy terugvegpoging karakter en vasberadenheid getoon het.
Newton sal sekerlik ongelukkig voel oor die gemiste geleentheid deur sy losskakel, Wilfred Bowers, wat ’n 50-m-strafdoel misgeskop het.
Albei spanne het opwindende en mededingende rugby gespeel, met die toeskouers wat tot die laaste minuut omtrent naels gekou het.
