Dead piglets in Sea Vista pond spark welfare concerns RAZAAN PLAATJIES
DEAD piglets found in a pond and surrounding bush in Malema, Sea Vista, have raised concerns about animal welfare, pig-keeping conditions and the disposal of animal carcasses. Founder and chairperson of St Francis Animal Rescue, Susan Rae Fox, raised concerns about what she described as severe negligence and cruelty among some pig owners in Sea Vista. “These pigs are cooped up in small, filthy pens, most without shelter, and given insufficient food and water. To throw dead and dying pigs in a pool of dirty water is a disgrace,” said Fox.
“Something must be done to shut down the piggeries and stop the breeding of unhealthy pigs once and for all. This is a horrific health hazard for all living in this area.” Fox also raised concerns about pigs allowed to roam and feed on rubbish, waste, plastic and filth. According to her, the animals are generally unvaccinated and are not treated for worms, leaving many thin and unhealthy. “A large percentage of piglets die from lack of nutrition, are attacked by dogs or are stolen for food,” said Fox. She said St Francis Animal Rescue volunteers were directed to a large pond at the back of Malema, where they saw the bodies of dead pigs floating in the water.
Fox said residents had also complained about a strong smell of rotting flesh, which led to the discovery of dead and decaying pigs buried in the bush. “There is no doubt these pigs were taken to this area to be disposed of by their owners,” said Fox. “Without forensic analysis, it is impossible to determine whether the pigs died from swine fever or from neglect and poor nutrition.” Louise Bakkes of SPCA Assisi Humansdorp said its inspections had not found evidence of pigs being without food, overcrowding or animals that were actively dying or seriously ill. She said the organisation was aware of the situation and that pig-related issues had been ongoing for several years.
Bakkes said the matter was first brought to their attention in November 2025. She said the SPCA immediately commenced welfare inspections and continued attending to individual pig cages until owners complied with welfare requirements, or until the pigs were slaughtered or sold. “The majority of the concerns identified related to the living environment around the pig cages, the conditions inside some of the cages, lack of access to water, often because pigs had tipped over their water bowls, and inadequate shelter,” said Bakkes. She said the SPCA recommenced inspections of the pig sites in Malema in August.

Dead piglets in pond spark welfare concerns CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 “During our inspections, we did not find evidence of pigs being without food. Most of the owners feed their pigs in the mornings and again in the late afternoon. We also did not observe overcrowding during our inspections,” said Bakkes. However, she said unsanitary conditions were observed in areas where people live and move around. “Such conditions are unhealthy for both livestock and humans, particularly where people are living in close proximity to livestock,” said Bakkes. The SPCA also inspected sites where dead pigs had allegedly been found in a pond and buried in the bush. Bakkes said they were informed the pigs had already been removed by the municipality or community members. “At present, no one has been able to provide us with information identifying the owners of the pigs in question,” said Bakkes. She said the SPCA had been in contact with the municipality, which took a pig to a veteri-
narian for assessment. “At the time of our discussions with the municipality, no African swine fever had been confirmed in pigs in our area by the State Veterinarian,” said Bakkes. She urged members of the public to report concerns about animal welfare, neglect or possible abuse immediately. Bakkes said all matters reported are treated with confidentiality and handled anonymously. “These matters should be reported to us immediately so that we can investigate and take the appropriate action,” said Bakkes. She said the SPCA is waiting for the municipality to provide a date for a meeting to discuss issues affecting animals and people living in the area. Bakkes also said a joint inspection with the Stock Theft Unit is planned. Municipal Manager Charl du Plessis confirmed that the municipality is aware of the matter and that pig carcasses had been removed. He said the municipality received a complaint on 28 July but that the issue was ongo-
ing and not a new occurrence. “Conditions tend to deteriorate following periods of heavy rainfall, when pig pens remain wet and take longer to dry, as well as during drought and periods of extreme heat,” said Du Plessis. He said municipal officials inspected the area with the SPCA and local veterinary practitioners and found that the animals were primarily piglets. “The carcasses were collected and submitted to the Humansdorp veterinarian for a post-mortem examination. The cause of death was diagnosed as pneumonia,” said Du Plessis. He said the municipality has not been able to identify who was responsible for disposing of the carcasses. Du Plessis said the municipality works with State Veterinary Services and the SPCA on animal welfare education and intervention. He confirmed that improper disposal of animal carcasses in open areas or water bodies is not permitted and may contravene applicable municipal by-laws, environmental-health regulations and waste-management require-
ments. “Where the owner or individual responsible can be identified, appropriate enforcement action, including the issuing of a fine, may be taken,” said Du Plessis. He said the municipality intends to conduct a follow-up inspection with the SPCA in September. Regarding conditions at pig-keeping properties, Du Plessis said there was currently no evidence of overcrowding and that many pig pens were empty. “Heavy rainfall has resulted in muddy conditions, while some animals have had insufficient shelter,” said Du Plessis. He also said no confirmed cases of African swine fever have been reported in the area. Du Plessis said the municipality was also working with Humane World for Animals on an initiative aimed at supporting a transition from pig farming to plant-based agricultural alternatives. For more information or to report concerns about animal welfare, contact the SPCA on 066 297 9010 or on their emergency number, 073 121 8963.
Kouga Local Municipality goes no-mow this September THIS September, Kouga Local Municipality is giving its lawnmowers a break and giving nature a chance to shine. From colourful wildflowers and buzzing bees to fluttering butterflies and visiting birds, selected public spaces will be allowed to grow naturally as part of the municipality’s No Mow September campaign. From 1 to 30 September 2026, mowing will be temporarily suspended at selected parks, public open spaces, greenbelts and road verges. The initiative allows grass, wildflowers and indigenous vegetation to
flower, produce seeds and provide valuable food and habitat for insects and other wildlife. The campaign supports biodiversity by creating natural spaces where pollinators such as bees and butterflies can find nectar and pollen, while giving local plant species an opportunity to establish and reproduce. Signs reading “Pardon the Weeds, We Are Feeding the Bees” will be placed at participating sites to remind residents that these areas are intentionally being allowed to grow.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the initiative demonstrates how a simple change in maintenance practices can have a meaningful environmental impact. “No Mow September gives nature an opportunity to take centre stage. By allowing these spaces to grow and flower, we create valuable habitats for pollinators and other wildlife while supporting the biodiversity of our beautiful Kouga.” He encouraged residents to embrace the initiative rather than viewing naturally
growing vegetation as untidy. “Sometimes we need to step back and allow nature to do what it does best. What may look like an overgrown patch is actually a busy ecosystem providing food, shelter and breeding opportunities for countless species.” Residents can also participate at home by allowing suitable sections of their gardens to grow, planting indigenous and pollinator-friendly flowers, creating small wildflower patches and observing the wildlife attracted to these spaces.
Man arrested with firearm, drugs in Humansdorp A 39-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after police and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) seized an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs during a joint operation in Vergenoeg, KwaNomzamo, on 29 August. According to police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, members attached to the SAPS Sarah Baartman District Operation Centre were conducting high-visibility patrols in the Vergenoeg area of Humansdorp. He said that during the patrols, the

team received positive information regarding a house in Vergenoeg, KwaNomzamo, where an illegal firearm and drugs were allegedly being kept. “According to the intelligence gathered, a known suspect was in possession of the contraband. Operational members, accompanied by the SANDF, immediately proceeded to the identified address,” said McCarthy. He said, acting in terms of Section 22 of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA), officers entered the premises, and the suspect granted full consent for a search of his room. McCarthy said during the search, the multidisciplinary team discovered and confiscated one pistol loaded with one live round of ammunition. He said officers also found 21 bags of methamphetamine (Tik), as well as Mandrax tablets. “The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of R1,550,” said McCarthy. He said the suspect was arrested on the spot and faces formal charges of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, and possession of Mandrax and Tik. The Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, highly commended the joint operational team for its swift execution and rapid response. “The successful interception by our District Operation Centre, reinforced by the SANDF, highlighted the impact of integrated, high-visibility deployments. By removing an unlicensed firearm and dismantling a local drug distribution point, these members have directly prevented violent crimes in KwaNomzamo,” said Kupiso. “This joint operation sends a clear message that we will continue to squeeze the space for criminals and aggressively clean up our neighbourhoods.” McCarthy said the suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.

Sea Vista woman feeds children for two decades RAZAAN PLAATJIES FOR more than two decades, Hilda Fredericks has been serving children in need through her soup kitchen in Sea Vista, St Francis Bay, driven by what she describes as a simple desire to ensure that children asking for food are not turned away. Fredericks, who was born in Sea Vista and has lived in the area her entire life, started her soup kitchen after noticing that children were regularly coming to her home asking for bread. She said she often cooked in large quantities for her own household and had leftover food that she could give to the children. “My neighbour suggested that I start a soup kitchen because there were always children at my doorstep asking for bread,” said Fredericks. She said she had never considered starting a soup kitchen before the suggestion but eventually decided to act on it and established her soup kitchen on 1 July 2000. At the time, Fredericks was still working full-time at the local harbour. A helper prepared meals in the mornings, while she completed whatever needed to be done in the afternoons before handing out the food to the children. At the time, Fredericks also received assistance from her former employer in the form of vegetables and bones for soup. She continued making soup and homemade bread and developed a passion for serving children in need. Initially, she fed about 75 children and 14 seniors. Fredericks said her neighbour later offered to take over feeding the seniors, allowing her to focus on the children. Today, she feeds about 60 children three times a week and has also expanded her services to assist substance users. However, Fredericks said she does not always have enough produce to prepare
meals every day. Thankfully, she receives regular bread donations from the local Spar store, while a local spaza shop provides vegetables, rice and maize meal, which she pays for at the end of the month. Ahead of Mandela Day, Richard Arderne, from Pam Golding St Francis Bay also donated dry soup mix jars, often referred to as Jars of Hope, which helped feed the children on Mandela Day. The local spaza shop also donated sweets, which Fredericks said were a great surprise for the children. “I love sharing with the underprivileged children from my community,” said Fredericks. She also runs a cleaning project with the children from her soup kitchen because she believes the community is her home and should be cleaned in the same way she cleans her own home. Fredericks uses the project to teach the children about the importance of keeping their environment and community clean. She said seeing children who have nowhere else to get food continues to motivate her. “A child is just a child. They should not be chased away when asking for bread because they cannot fend for themselves and need assistance,” said Fredericks. “It breaks my heart to see children asking for food.” Fredericks said she remains grateful to everyone who has donated to her soup kitchen and hopes her daughter, Hillary, will eventually take over the initiative. She said her daughter currently helps her a lot with the soup kitchen, although Fredericks acknowledged that running one is not an easy task and is not for everyone. Fredericks said she often needs rice and vegetables but does not want money. Instead, she hopes people will assist with produce that can be used to prepare meals for underprivileged children. For more information or to donate produce towards Hilda Fredericks’ soup kitchen, contact her on 064 326 2938.

JEFFREYS BAY:
Police captain pedals into national cycling team A DECADE after taking up cycling to rehabilitate his back following his third operation, Jeffreys Bay police Captain Gerhard Claassen has pedalled his way into the 2026 SAPS National Mountain Bike Team. Claassen, based at the Jeffreys Bay Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), secured his spot in the 2026 SAPS National Mountain Bike Team following a stellar performance at the SAPS National Mountain Bike Championships. The gruelling four-day competition took place at Lake Eland in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, from 24 to 27 August. Competing in the highly competitive 55– 59 age category, Claassen dominated the field across four demanding events, bringing home a total of four medals: • Silver medal: Prologue (6 km lap) • Silver medal: Hill Climb (6 km) • Silver medal: Cross Country (4 x 5 km laps) • Bronze medal: Marathon (40 km) Claassen, who still serves on active operational standby duties, took up cycling 10 years ago as a form of rehabilitation following his third back operation. “I believe that as a member and an officer, I can influence our younger members to get involved in sport,” said Claassen. “It is vital for staying healthy and offers an essential release to take our minds off an incredibly stressful work environment.” The Eastern Cape’s cycling prowess was further cemented as Claassen and Detective Warrant Officer Donavan O’Reilly (overall first in all categories and male champion for 2026) from the KuGompo SAPS (formerly Fleet Street SAPS) were the only two cyclists from the province

tives within the region. For her, the experience is about more than competing for a title. She hopes her journey will encourage other women to pursue the dreams they may have put aside. “As women, we tend to bury our dreams because we think it’s too late or it will never happen for us. We may not always know our destination, but we should never run away from the beginning of our journey. I want to encourage all women to step out in faith and run towards opportunities that come across their paths. If you have buried a dream, be courageous and revive it again.” As she prepares for the national finale, Paché will continue balancing her professional career with the responsibilities and opportunities that come with representing Kouga and the Eastern Cape on a national platform. HUMANSDORP: ST PATRICK’S PRIMARY SCHOOL
Five learners qualify for national spelling competition RAZAAN PLAATJIES
learners ahead of the competition. Van Wyk said it was a great achievement that many of the learners start spelling from Grade 1, adding that they continue to perform well in the competition each year. Although St Patrick’s is a small school, she jokingly advised their competitors to “watch out”. Van Wyk said she always motivates the children to “shine bright like a diamond”. “I am very proud of them and believe that they have bright futures ahead of them.”
FIVE learners from St Patrick’s Primary School in Humansdorp have qualified for the national Sanlam Words Open Worlds (WOW) competition, following impressive performances at the provincial competition. The first round took place at Kings College in Jeffreys Bay, with 10 St Patrick’s learners progressing to the provincial competition at Cillié High School in Gqeberha. Five learners from the school qualified for the national event, which will take place in Stellenbosch in October. St Patrick’s principal, Venita van Wyk, said the achievement was particularly exciting considering some of the challenges faced by the school. “St Patrick’s is a small school with older infrastructure,” said Van Wyk. She said many of the school’s learners come from underprivileged backgrounds and face a language barrier, as most are taught in Afrikaans, making their achievements in the competition even more significant. “Considering some of the challenges the school faces, it is exciting to have learners from our school make it to the nationals of the Sanlam WOW competition,” said Van Wyk. She said what was even more impressive was that the learners are taught in Afrikaans, yet at least four of the five learners are competing in English categories.
At the provincial competition, the learners performed as follows: • Grade 5 learner Luke Draghoender – third place in Afrikaans Home Language. • Grade 4 learner Jermhicke Smith – fourth place in English First Additional Language. • Grade 7 learner Shadiyah Draai – second place in English First Additional Language. • Grade 7 learner Lautner Groener – first place in English First Additional Language. • Grade 6 learner Jo-Aine van Willing – second place in English First Additional Language. At the back from left are Luke Draghoender, Shadiyah Draai, Lautner Groener and Jo-Aine van Willing. In front is Jermhicke Smith. be competing in the national competition,” said Van Wyk. Teacher Mignon Smith, whom Van Wyk refers to as “Miss WOW”, is the convener of the WOW competition at the school, where she, together with her team, prepares the
With the national competition taking place in Stellenbosch in October, Van Wyk said the learners require sponsorships for accommodation, meals and transportation. She said each child needs approximately R3,000 for the trip and that the school would appreciate any donations towards their travel costs. Gqeberha mechanic advances to national artisan awards WHAT started with fixing bicycles for his mountain-biking teammates at Grey High School has grown into a career working on motor vehicles — and now Gqeberha mechanic, Daniel Meyburgh, is heading for the national artisan awards. The automotive mechanic is one of two Eastern Cape finalists in the 2026 South African National Artisan Awards (SANAA), alongside Masixole Vutela of King Hintsa TVET College. An alumnus of Port Elizabeth TVET College, Meyburgh is affiliated with Magic Auto Sales and Service. Vutela is listed under Vutela Trading Enterprise. This year’s national awards ceremony will take place on 5 September under the theme “Changing Artisanal Identity and Status”. The programme recognises artisans across trades including automotive, engineering, construction, electrical, plumbing and mechanical disciplines. From bicycles to motor vehicles Meyburgh matriculated from Grey High School in 2020, where he was part of the school’s first mountain-biking team. It was also where his passion for working with anything on wheels began. He became the person his teammates turned to when their bicycles needed repairs. “I was always happy to assist fellow team members with their bicycles,” he said. That interest developed into a career at Magic Auto, where he started working in 2021. Through the company, he began
studying at Port Elizabeth TVET College in 2022 and said he qualified at the end of 2025. A love of motor cars was the main inspiration behind his choice of trade. “I enjoy problem solving, especially when I can find a solution to complex engineering projects. I love innovation, which makes working on vehicles so rewarding,” he said. Finding solutions in the workshop Working on complex tasks has become one of the highlights of his career. Taking the lead in the workshop and finding solutions to challenging problems are among his biggest achievements, he said. A passion for track days, autocross and road rallies has given him an opportunity to put his knowledge of engines, suspension and braking systems to use. Representing the Eastern Cape at the national awards is a proud moment for the Gqeberha artisan. “Mechanics is my passion, and to be a finalist in a ceremony such as this means my passions have paid off.” For young people considering an artisan career, the advice is simple: choose something you enjoy. “Make sure you are interested in anything you take on. Be sure that it is something you enjoy doing, and it will never feel like work,” he said. Meyburgh will join the other SANAA 2026 finalists at the national awards ceremony on 5 September.

“Man, hierdie is taai wedstryde. Prinsloo as beste agterspeler aangewys en Aiden Felix as die beste voorspeler.

Ek is trots op my spelers.
