SERVICE DELIVERY HIGHLIGHTS August 2026 FROM THE DESK OF KOUGA MUNICIPALITY EXECUTIVE MAYOR: CLLR HATTINGH BORNMAN

Long-term support for animal welfare Kouga Local Municipality has approved nine-year, 11-month right-to-use agreements for two long-serving animal welfare organisations.

with long-term security to continue their work in rescuing and caring for animals, preventing cruelty and supporting responsible pet ownership across Kouga.

At a Special Council meeting on 27 July 2026, Council approved agreements for Jeffreys Bay Animal Rescue on Erf 8783 in Jeffreys Bay and SPCA Assisi on Erf 499 in Humansdorp.

SPCA Assisi has operated from its Humansdorp premises since 1982, while Jeffreys Bay Animal Rescue has served the community from its municipal property for several years.

The agreements provide both organisations

New TLB boosts service delivery Kouga Local Municipality has strengthened its municipal fleet with the procurement of a new Tractor Loader Backhoe (TLB) at a cost of more than R1.6 million. The specialised vehicle will enhance the

operational capacity of the Community and Safety Services Department, supporting faster and more efficient responses to service delivery needs, maintenance and municipal operations across the Kouga area.

Kouga invests in R51.5m road upgrades Kouga Local Municipality is investing a combined R51.5 million in road upgrades across the Greater St Francis area, Humansdorp and the Gamtoos Valley as part of its ongoing commitment to improving road infrastructure. The R26.5 million Greater St Francis project, launched on 6 August 2026, includes upgrades in St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay. A further R25 million project will focus on Humansdorp, Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill. The projects include pothole repairs, stormwater improvements, crack sealing, asphalt overlays, slurry seals, new road markings and electrical ducting. Roads were prioritised based on their condition, traffic

volumes and maintenance requirements. The projects form part of Kouga’s R200 million road resealing programme, launched in January 2025, which aims to improve road safety, accessibility and driving conditions while extending the lifespan of the municipality’s road network. The Greater St Francis project is expected to be completed in November 2026, while the Humansdorp and Gamtoos Valley project is expected to take approximately six months. Residents and motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and comply with temporary traffic measures and signage while construction is underway.

250 Homes connected to electricity A total of 250 households in London, Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay, were officially connected to the electricity network on 12 August 2026. The R2.5 million project forms part of Phase 1 of Kouga Local Municipality’s Ocean View electrification programme, improving access to a safe and reliable electricity supply. With Phase 1 completed, work has now

progressed to Phase 2, which includes the planting of electricity poles. Local residents are being employed to assist with this work, creating temporary employment opportunities while contributing to the development of their community. The electrification programme also supports Kouga’s efforts to reduce unsafe electrical connections, improve public safety, protect municipal infrastructure and reduce electricity losses.

HUMANSDORP, GAMTOOS VALLEY:

R25 million road upgrade underway KOUGA Local Municipality is set to roll out a R25 million road upgrade project in the coming weeks, targeting critical road infrastructure in Humansdorp and the Gamtoos Valley, including Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill. The project is expected to be completed within six months and forms part of Phase 3 of Kouga’s R200 million road resealing programme, which was launched in January 2025 as part of the municipality’s ongoing investment in the maintenance and improvement of its road network. The planned works will include localised stormwater repairs, electrical ducting, pothole repairs, crack sealing, asphalt overlays, slurry seals and new road markings. Roads included in the programme were identified through a comprehensive assessment of the municipality’s road network. The prioritisation process considered factors such as road condition, traffic volumes and maintenance requirements to ensure that areas requiring the most urgent attention are addressed. The project is expected to improve road safety, accessibility and driving conditions for residents, businesses and visitors, while contributing to the longterm sustainability of Kouga’s road infrastructure.

The municipality has urged motorists and residents to exercise caution and patience in areas where construction activities are under way and to adhere to temporary traffic measures and signage. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the project demonstrates the municipality’s continued commitment to investing in infrastructure that

One Leg Walk brings disability awareness to Kouga RAZAAN PLAATJIES A 5,000 km awareness walk aimed at challenging the stigma surrounding people living with disabilities recently passed through the Kouga region, bringing a message of unity, peace and ubuntu to local communities.

Mqondisi Ntshangase visited the Kouga region earlier in August. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

The One Leg Walk is also a fundraising opportunity for people living with disabilities and forms part of a nationwide journey that began in Pretoria on 25 May. Mqondisi Ntshangase, who currently resides in Pretoria, is walking the route by himself using a prosthetic leg. The first leg of his journey took him from Pretoria to Cape Town, the Kouga region and Gqeberha. He will continue to Durban before making his way back to Pretoria. Since the initiative is nationwide, Ntshangase said he plans to visit every province in the country. He has at least 150 more days of walking ahead of him. “I am currently walking 5,000 km to spread awareness and remove the stigma many people living with disabilities are faced with,” said Ntshangase. He also hopes to assist homeless people and build or renovate sports facilities that have been

vandalised so that children in every community throughout the country have access to them. Ntshangase said he wants to spread unity, peace and ubuntu, particularly following the recent nationwide attacks on foreign nationals. “I want to see communities united and living in peace,” said Ntshangase. He also wants to offer a platform to people living with disabilities and said he is looking forward to seeing the impact his One Leg Walk initiative will have on communities throughout the country. Ntshangase was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2012 and had his leg amputated in 2014 at the age of 25. “While the amputation was a huge adjustment for me, especially because I lived an independent life before the amputation, I adapted and moved on with the new life God had given me,” said Ntshangase. “I believe that everything that I have been through is all part of God’s plan for my life.” Nearly 100 days into his walk, Ntshangase said he has received a good reaction from people along the way, with many excited to learn more about his awareness campaign. “People feel motivated and inspired. It has been humbling to

get such a good reception from people along the way,” said Ntshangase. His visit to Kouga earlier this month was marked by what he described as a great deal of love and support. During his time in the region, Ntshangase visited several tourist sites in Tsitsikamma and Storms River, while also receiving a warm welcome from communities across Kouga. He said residents offered him accommodation and supported his journey. “It was a great experience to see the communities in Kouga supporting my initiative,” said Ntshangase. He said he has also been supported along the way by what he described as “angels of God”, who have provided him with food, money and accommodation, as he relies solely on his monthly social grant. Ntshangase said he wants people to know that his walk is ongoing and that he would love to meet more people along the way with whom he can share his awareness initiative. He encouraged people to approach him, saying this would give him an opportunity to spread awareness. For more information or to follow Ntshangase’s journey, visit his Facebook page, King Nipho.

Local teachers pinpoint training needs MORE than 2,000 Eastern Cape teachers, including educators from schools across the Kouga region, have identified coding, robotics, phonics, reading, assessment and practical subjects as their most urgent professional development needs. The findings emerged from teacher-development workshops organised by Oxford University Press South Africa (OUPSA), with teachers from Jeffreys Bay Primary School, Hoërskool Paul Sauer, Kareedouw Secondary School, Patensie Primary School, Stormsriver Primary School and Thornhill Combined School among the participants. Zimkhitha Gamedala, Oxford’s Eastern Cape Provincial Manager, said teachers must introduce digital skills while strengthening literacy and numeracy and supporting learners at different levels. She said when training does not keep pace, the gap is felt in teacher confidence, lesson plan-

ning and the support learners receive. Gamedala said the Department of Basic Education’s School Realities 2025 report shows that roughly one in five of South Africa’s ordinary schools is in the Eastern Cape. She said distance and the large number of smaller schools complicate regular in-person development, increasing the value of flexible support and resources teachers can use immediately. “During the workshops, coding and robotics emerged as the most requested topics, with phonics second. Physical education, measurement, music and assessment also featured strongly. The pattern points to demand for digital confidence and literacy foundations, while showing that teachers want support across the full curriculum,” said Gamedala. She said better assessment helps identify learning gaps earlier. Gamedala added that stron-

ger reading strategies can move learners from decoding words to understanding them, while greater confidence in coding can introduce digital thinking even where equipment is limited. She said effective development turns curriculum requirements into usable teaching methods. “Teachers are telling us what would help in their classrooms. When support responds to those realities, teachers can apply it immediately and learners experience more consistent, confident teaching,” said Gamedala. She said a separate Oxford survey indicated that development must fit around classroom responsibilities. Gamedala said preferences were closely split, with 53% favouring online workshops and 47% face-to-face sessions. She said almost half preferred two-hour sessions and downloadable resources. Gamedala said effective support therefore needs to be flexible,

practical and continuous: shorter online and regional sessions, curriculum-aligned resources, follow-up guidance and content shaped by local feedback. She said for remote schools, this can reduce professional isolation and help useful methods travel beyond one workshop. Gamedala said the good news is that Eastern Cape teachers have articulated their priorities. She said districts, training providers, publishers and school leaders now have a clearer basis for directing limited capacity towards immediate classroom needs. Gamedala said Oxford’s teacher-development workshops are one example of this approach, pairing real training with curriculum-aligned resources and flexible delivery options. “Every response helps us develop content that is relevant to classroom realities,” said Gamedala. “When teachers leave with

something useful, professional development becomes part of classroom practice rather than a once-off event.” Teachers and school leaders can find information about Oxford’s upcoming workshops at https://bit.ly/4f0hUhL.

African Dawn to host family fundraiser RAZAAN PLAATJIES AFRICAN Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary near Thornhill will host a major fundraising event on Saturday, 29 August, with families invited to enjoy a day of food, games, live entertainment and The Amazing Race Junior while supporting the sanctuary. Bernadette Loock, co-owner of the sanctuary, said the event is being held to raise much-needed funds to help keep the sanctuary operating. “The fundraising event is an opportunity for us to raise some funds to keep us going and keep the doors open,” said Loock. She said the event will include

food stalls, games for children, jumping castles, a DJ and live music, with singer, BenjaminG, set to perform. Loock said there will also be lucky draw prizes where visitors can pay a fee, add their name to the draw and stand a chance to win a prize, with the draw scheduled for around 13:00. “It will be a fun-filled day for friends and family just to come out and relax with the animals and to see what it’s all about, embrace nature, and a lot of fresh air,” said Loock. She said The Amazing Race Junior will form part of the day’s activities, offering families a scavenger hunt-style adventure

within the wildlife sanctuary. Loock said each clue will lead teams to their next task, which must be completed before they receive the clue for the following challenge. “Experience adventure while learning about the wildlife sanctuary in the most fun-filled and adventurous way,” said Loock. She said teams needed to consist of between three and five members, with participants aged five and older. Loock said each team needed to include at least one parent or adult to ensure the safety of the children and make the event a fun family experience. While entries for The Amazing

Race Junior have closed, she said spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on the teams at regular sanctuary pricing, while vendors will also be available for visitors to support. Loock said they would appreciate donations of one or more bags of food stock from the following list in support of the sanctuary: cat food, canary feed, sunflower seeds, white millet feed, red millet feed, mielies, crushed corn, lorikeet feed, mynah feed, flamingo feed, chicken feed and cattle all-in-one. She said she is also hoping for strong public support to make the fundraiser a success. “I’m really praying and hoping

for a nice big turnout, and I’m looking for all the support I possibly can get to get as many feet through the door as possible,” said Loock. “Without the public, it won’t be a success, and I really need this event to be a success.” The event will run from 10:00 to 16:00 on 29 August at African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary in Thornhill. Doors will be open from 09:00 to 17:00 for the general public, with a 25% discount on offer, bringing prices to R90 for adults, R45 for scholars and R25 for preschoolers. KOUGA SPOTLIGHT: BARBARA BROWN-QUINN

Green fingers root Barbara in Kouga ELLEN HANCKE SHE overcame cancer, was born with green fingers and is working hard at improving her Afrikaans. In recent years, she had a double carpal tunnel procedure, but she still thrives when her hands are covered in soil. The Kouga Spotlight this week focuses on Barbara Brown-Quinn (77), a garden designer from Jeffreys Bay. Barbara was born in the town of Livingstone in the former Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Her father, Wilmot Milton Irvine, was a businessman who married Daphne Pretorius, an Afrikaans direct descendant of Andries and Marthinus Pretorius. Barbara and her siblings, Jenny and John, attended Chingola Primary School in the Copperbelt region before they were sent to schools in South Africa. The girls attended Assumption Convent in Makhanda (Grahamstown), whilst their brother went to Dale College in Qonce (King William’s Town). The Irvine family retired to Cape St Francis in the Eastern Cape, where Barbara’s father owned the Seal Point Store and the then Cape St Francis Estate Agency. Barbara and her first husband resided in Carletonville before relocating to Cape Town, where her first child, Clinton Heath Jansen van Vuuren, was born in 1973. Soon afterwards, they moved to Oranjemund in Namibia. Barbara worked for South West African Airways, and during those years

she received national (Namibian) colours for squash. When Barbara moved to Humansdorp with her son, she opened the Kontiki steakhouse as well as Pioneer Foods. She remarried in 1978 to a local farmer, Jannie Brown, and they relocated to his farm Klipdrift near Oyster Bay. During this season, Barbara became involved in gardening projects, as well as the local farming community. She soon started taking part in exhibitions at local agricultural shows, where her floral art gained recognition. On January 28, 1980, she gave birth to her second son, Johan Carel Brown, fourth in the lineage of the well-known family. Four years later, the couple welcomed their daughter, Bianca. Jannie, a renowned sheep farmer, later died in an accident near Humansdorp. Barbara continued her floral art and soon started designing gardens in the Kouga area. In September 1994, she married Peter Quinn. She became involved with the Humansdorp Fynbosfees, where she served on the committee for seven years. The couple moved to Carmel Coastal Retreat near George and Victoria Bay, where Barbara was involved in ministry and counselling. Her garden design projects included work at Fancourt Golf Estate and the walkways at Carmel. She also designed gardens for guest houses in George. During their stint at Carmel, she befriended the then Barbara Botha and her husband, the late Prime Minister PW Botha, who would often enjoy meals

with them. “Sometimes when we ladies went on a swimming excursion, we were always accompanied by bodyguards, which was quite a daunting experience.” Peter died during COVID, and Barbara returned to Kouga and settled in Jeffreys Bay. She moved to Eedenglen Retirement Village four years ago, where she still enjoys gardening. Her favourite flowers are Iceberg roses and Rhodesian flame lilies. Her favourite trees are cycads and aloe trees. Barbara admits that she still struggles with Afrikaans, but she has improved her skills since the days she helped out in their family butchery in Humansdorp. “I was standing behind the counter when a client asked me for niertjies (kidneys), which I understood to be ‘Neuk me!’ and I ran off to the office in bewilderment!” She loves spending time with her three children and two grandchildren. Bianca is a chartered accountant in the Cayman Islands, and both Jannie and Clinton are businessmen in Ballito and Jeffreys Bay respectively. Barbara is a devout Christian. She loves playing Rummikub with friends and going on fishing outings with her grandchildren, Tristan (19) and Juliet (15). Her latest project is the design of the garden close to the dam in Edenglen, and she also enjoys preparing meals for elderly friends in their own kitchens, as well as helping to resolve problems amicably with local authorities on their behalf.

Pellsrus Primary School and JBay Academy have been recognised for their environmental efforts at the Regional Sarah Baartman School Environmental Awards. The awards were held under the theme “A Green and Smart Generation for a Better Future”, with schools across the region submitting portfolios showcasing their environmental initiatives and achievements. Pellsrus Primary School claimed first place and received R20 000 in prize money. The school will now represent the Sarah Baartman Region at the Provincial School Environmental Awards. JBay Academy also performed strongly, securing fourth place and winning R10 000 for its efforts. Kouga Local Municipality congratulated both schools, saying their achievements reflected the dedication of learners, educators and wider school communities to environmental awareness and sustainable practices. The municipality also commended all schools across the region that participated in the awards and submitted portfolios of evidence. It said their commitment to developing environmentally conscious and responsible future generations was commendable. Pellsrus Primary School will now prepare to take its environmental initiatives to the provincial level. Kouga Local Municipality wished the school success in the next round of the competition, while congratulating both schools on their achievements.

THE JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary, which sterilises at least 80 animals every month in the Kouga region, is in Ocean View Township in Jeffreys Bay. The organisation is looking for forever homes for these animals: Chelsea is around 14 weeks old. She has been with the Sanctuary for a long time and is desperately in need of a family to call her own. She is a medium-sized mixedbreed dog. Buddy is a five-month-old, medium-sized mixed-breed. Sadly, his owners can’t keep him. He needs companionship and lots of love and attention. He would make the perfect family dog. Kevin is a border collie cross. He is around four months old. He is a very loving puppy and would also make the perfect family dog. Princess is a small-to-medium-sized, mixed-breed female puppy. She is around nine weeks old. For more info or to visit the clinic, contact Cindy Muller at 083 320 4173, email jbayanimals@gmail.com, or visit JBay Animal Rescue Sanctuary at www.Jbayanimalsanctuary.co.za.

A DAY IN THE LIFE: MARTHA ROLLISON

Grow a greener Kouga

A life of faith, service and determination

For Martha “Baba” Rollison, working for Kouga Local Municipality is about far more than simply completing a day’s tasks. For the past 19 years, the Oyster Bay-born general worker and team leader has approached each day with faith, purpose and a deep commitment to serving her community. FOR Martha “Baba” Rollison, every working day begins with prayer, purpose and a commitment to serving her community.

KOUGA Local Municipality is inviting residents, businesses, schools and community organisations to take part in its 2026 Arbour Month Tree Planting and Donation Campaign during September. Under the theme "Plant a Tree, Grow a Future", the municipality aims to plant 500 trees across the Kouga area — 250 indigenous trees to promote biodiversity, provide shade and improve green spaces, and 250 fruit trees to support food security and community food gardens. Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman said the campaign was an opportunity for communities to contribute to the environment. "Every tree planted today is an investment in the future of our communities. By working together, we can create greener public spaces, protect our natural environment and strengthen food security for generations to come." Residents and organisations can get involved by donating or sponsoring trees, planting trees at homes, schools and businesses, organising community planting events or partnering with the municipality on environmental initiatives. Businesses are encouraged to support the campaign through their environmental and social responsibility programmes. "This is a campaign for everyone. Whether you plant one tree or sponsor many, every contribution makes a difference," said Bornman. For donations, sponsorships or planting initiatives, contact the municipality's Environmental Management/Parks Department at ymlindazwe@kouga.gov.za or mengelbrecht@kouga.gov.za.

A general worker and team leader at Kouga Local Municipality in Oyster Bay, Rollison has been part of the municipality for 19 years. She joined on 4 April 2007 – a moment she still describes as an answered prayer. An answered prayer Born and bred in Oyster Bay, Rollison never imagined that she would one day work for the municipality. “The call that I was going to be employed came at a very challenging time in my life,” says the mother of four. “I thought that I would go through my life struggling, and then the unexpected happened. It was an awesome feeling. I am still so grateful, even years later.” Starting as a general worker, Rollison has grown into a team leader who takes pride in both her work and the community she serves. Rollison’s work is all-encompassing. Together with her small team, she tackles a variety of tasks, including grass cutting, litter picking, cleaning public ablution facilities, maintaining the community hall and keeping Oyster Bay clean. Her day starts by unlocking the community hall. Although they are not stationed there throughout the day, it is where they gather, pray, collect their tools and prepare for the day ahead. “We pray, take our tools and go our separate ways to do our daily tasks.” Leading with excellence As team leader, Rollison be-

Martha ‘Baba’ Rollison has been part of the Kouga Municipality for 19 years. lieves in leading by example and encouraging her colleagues to take pride in what they do. “I motivate my team by telling them to do what we must and do it with excellence.” One of the challenges they encounter is at the drop-off zone, where some residents do not always understand the rules. However, a particularly proud moment came when her team was nominated as having one of the best drop-off zones. “I didn’t expect it, but it was special. It sent a message that we are working with excellence.” For Rollison, service delivery means responding to residents’ needs without unnecessary delay. “When we are asked to do something for the residents, we do it immediately. And when residents thank us, it motivates us to do more and do it even better

next time.” A journey of faith Rollison’s journey at the municipality has also been a journey of faith and personal transformation. When she started working, she says she did not know God. Over time, people introduced her to her faith and helped her discover a new sense of identity and purpose. “When you come from a bad background, people disregard you, but when I started knowing God, I discovered who I am in Christ. I learned that I am valuable and one of God’s chosen.” Outside of work, her faith remains central to her life. She is a member of The Voice Ministry and is an evangelist on probation, with plans to be ordained soon. She also finds inspiration in

gospel artist Vetkryt. “The moment you listen to one of his songs you will be uplifted.” Dreams and determination Rollison is determined to continue growing. One of her goals is to complete her matric. She also dreams of obtaining her driver’s licence, becoming an even bigger part of the municipality, if it is God’s will, and seeing her children fulfil their own dreams. And there is a fun side to “Baba” that many colleagues may not know. “People don’t know that I can dance,” she laughs. “For people, it is like Baba goes to church. That’s it.” But when it comes to happiness, nothing compares to spending time with her children. Her message to others is one of perseverance: “Do not give up. I must go on until I have what I want.”

EP golf legend Lynn Slogrove retires HANNES SCHOEMAN LEGENDARY Eastern Province golfer, Lynn Slogrove, of the St Francis Links Club, has decided to retire and will be sadly missed when the provincial women’s team step up to the national A division next year. Recently, she was part of the triumphant EP side that won the inaugural Mid-Amateur Inter-provincial tournament (for players 30 years and older) at the Peacanwood Country Club for the very first time. When EP face the big guns in Boland next year, Lynn’s absence will be clearly felt. Her experience and talent were invaluable over many years. “Yes, it was an emotional decision to bow out. I will be 74 next year, and that will be too much of a challenge. Actually, I have really extended my provincial golf career way beyond expectation,” she said. Slogrove is not only a golf legend, but also in hockey when she played at the highest level. As a hockey player, she represented Border Schools in 1968 and 1969, the Border senior

team in 1975 and 1976; Peninsula (1977); Western Province (1978); Eastern Province (19791985) and SA Indoor (1985). She also played for the SA Universities around 1984. Lynn then turned to golf, introducing a remarkable career. She started golf in 1984 and represented EP from 1985 to 2026 and captained the team on multiple occasions. Lynn has won at least 45 Club Championships at three Eastern Province clubs between 1987 and 2025. She also played for the South African Invitational team in matches against Zimbabwe and the Springbok team in the early 1990s. She has been Humewood Golf Club’s champion at least 25 times, the first in 1987, and the latest in 2025. And in the process, she has also won multiple Strokeplay Championships at Humewood over 41 years. At St. Francis Bay, she won 13 out of 14 Club Championships between 1997 and 2010 - a record that could stand for many years to come. One of the highlights of her career was when she represented BMW South Africa at the BMW Golf Cup International in the World Final in Singapore in 2012. There she received the award for Best Wom-

an Player at the tournament. When he was told of Lynn’s retirement, EP president Karl du Preez said, “It’s a privilege to acknowledge Lynn Slogrove as she steps away from competitive golf. For more than four decades, she has been an extraordinary ambassador for Eastern Province golf. Her record speaks for itself. But Lynn’s greatest legacy extends beyond her achievements. “She has been a role model to generations of golfers through her dedication, sportsmanship, humility and willingness to mentor and support young players. Her retirement from competitive golf will undoubtedly leave a significant gap in the Eastern Province. “We will miss seeing her compete, lead and inspire, but her contribution to our game will remain part of the EPGolf legacy for many years to come,”said Du Preez. “On behalf of EPGolf, thank you, Lynn, for everything you have given to our sport and to the golfers who have followed in your footsteps. “We wish you every happiness in this next chapter — although I suspect this is not quite the last we will see of you on a golf course!” he concluded.

The legendary Lynn Slogrove has called it a day.

Attendee Mika Gardner said the day-long event saw students from as young as six years old right through to adults stepping onto the mats to compete for a place on the competition team. She said the young athletes competed across five different divisions, categorised by age and size, including a dedicated girls’ division. Gardner said from start to finish, the trials showcased exceptional talent. She said despite their young age, the children displayed sparring skills of a very high quality that left spectators thoroughly impressed. One parent in attendance said, “The skill demonstrated by the children was exceptional. We were very impressed by how well they could spar even though they were so little.” Gardner said the event was about more than just competition. “It was a true community affair, with moms and dads, aunts and uncles, grannies and grandpas, neighbours and friends all coming out to support the children,” said Gardner. “The atmosphere was lively and filled with encouragement for every competitor.” Gardner said what was so heartwarming to witness was the team spirit and sportsmanship amongst the competitors. She said alongside the action, the academy ran a fundraising drive selling sweet treats and vetkoek, with all proceeds going towards a special cause. Gardner said the fundraising was specifically aimed at supporting the academy’s sponsored children, ensuring they receive
