Safer roads, safer walks The Kouga Local Municipality has completed a R1.15 million infrastructure project to improve pedestrian safety and traffic calming along Diaz Road and at the intersection of Jeffrey and Schelde streets. The work included widening the Diaz Road sidewalk by approximately three metres over 150 metres, adding benches and bollards, and constructing a raised intersection to improve accessibility, encourage slower traffic and create a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists. Gamtoos Ferry Hotel set to reopen after flood RAZAAN PLAATJIES AFTER months of rebuilding following the devastating May floods, the Gamtoos Ferry Hotel is preparing to reopen its doors, with the official opening set for today, 1 October. Co-owner Annette Herselman said the reopening was an emotional moment for her and her husband, Roy, who have spent the past few months repairing and rebuilding the property after extensive flood damage. “It is a wonderful feeling, and also quite emotional,” said Annette. “When we first went back after the flood and saw the damage, it was difficult to know where to start. There was mud and water damage everywhere and so much had been destroyed.” Annette said seeing the hotel coming alive again made the hard work worthwhile. “I think both Roy and I are just very happy to see the Ferry coming alive again,” said Annette. She said the hotel was severely affected when floodwaters swept through the property in May, damaging everything in the lower areas, including the restaurant and bar, kitchen areas, shop, offices, electrical systems, refrigeration, furniture and built-in cupboards. Annette said the extent of the damage made the recovery process challenging. “It wasn’t just one section of the hotel that was damaged. The water went through virtually everything,” said Annette. “Once floodwater and mud get into electrical equipment, fridges, freezers, kitchen equip-
ment, cupboards, furniture and fittings, a lot of it simply cannot be saved.” Annette said the rebuilding process involved extensive building, electrical and plumbing work, as well as plastering, painting, carpentry, refrigeration and cleaning, alongside repairs and replacements to kitchen equipment, furniture, fittings and IT systems. She said she and Roy decided not to undertake temporary repairs simply to reopen as quickly as possible, but instead to rebuild properly. The couple have also used the opportunity to make changes and improvements while retaining the character of the hotel. “We don’t want it to become a modern building that could be anywhere. It must still feel like the Gamtoos Ferry Hotel,” said Annette. While important facilities will be operational for the reopening and events, she said some work will continue afterwards. Annette said the important thing was that the sections opened to the public must be ready and must work properly. The reopening will be marked by the Gam1000 fishing competition from 2 to 4 October, followed by Dairy Fest on 10 and 11 October. Annette said the two events were fitting choices to mark the hotel’s return. “The Gam1000 is about the Gamtoos River, fishing and the people who have been coming here for years,” said Annette. “Meanwhile, Dairy Fest represents the farming community and especially the dairy industry, which is such an important part of this area.”
The Gamtoos Ferry Hotel is set to open on 1 October. Annette said the Gam1000 is an angling competition based around the Gamtoos River and the Ferry Hotel, while Dairy Fest celebrates the dairy industry and includes live entertainment, food, stalls, local businesses, agricultural exhibits and activities for children. Both events are expected to bring visitors back to the hotel and provide an opportunity for the community to reconnect with the ven-

ue. Annette said the hotel had received significant support from the local community during its recovery. “One of the things that really stood out for us after the flood was how many people contacted us, offered help or simply wanted to know how we were coping,” said Annette. “Our staff have also been through this with us. The flood didn’t only affect Roy and me. It affected the people who work here and their families as well.” Annette said local contractors, suppliers, friends, customers and community members had helped in different ways. “I think the biggest thing I would like to say is thank you. We are very grateful for that support,” said Annette. “I am also very proud of what our staff and everybody involved have managed to achieve in such a short time.” Although the flood caused extensive damage, Annette said she and Roy never seriously considered not reopening. “There were definitely days when I looked at everything and thought, ‘Where are we going to start?’ But the question was really how we were going to do it and how long it would take, rather than whether we were going to do it,” said Annette. Looking ahead, she said she was most looking forward to seeing people return to the hotel. “I want to walk through the restaurant and see tables full again. I want to see people sitting outside looking over the river, children running around, fishermen coming and going, weddings taking place and families coming for Sunday lunch,” said Annette. “Those ordinary things are what we have missed.” As previously reported, Annette and Roy took ownership of the hotel in April 2023 and had expanded the property before the flood. Annette said the flood had set them back but had not changed their plans for the hotel. “The flood has set us back, but it has not changed what we want to achieve here,” said Annette.

Diaz Road and Jeffreys Street upgrade completed KOUGA Local Municipality has completed a R1.15 million infrastructure project aimed at improving pedestrian safety, accessibility and traffic calming along Diaz Road and at the intersection of Jeffrey Street and Schelde Street. The completed project included the widening of the existing sidewalk along Diaz Road and the construction of a raised intersection at the corner of Jeffrey Street and Schelde Street. The total contract value was R1 150,000, with R896 085.55 allocated to the Diaz Road sidewalk upgrade and R253 914.45 to the construction of the raised intersection. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, said the completion of the project represents another practical investment in infrastructure that directly benefits residents and road users. “We are pleased to see this project completed and delivering tangible benefits to the community. Infrastructure is ultimately about people – making our towns safer, more accessible and more
functional for everyone,” explained Bornman. “The improved sidewalk provides pedestrians with a safer and more spacious route, while the raised intersection contributes to improved road safety and traffic calming. These are the kinds of projects that make a real difference in people's daily lives.” Improved pedestrian infrastructure The Diaz Road sidewalk has been widened by approximately three metres over a distance of 150 metres, significantly increasing the available pedestrian space. The upgrade included the removal and replacement of approximately 150 metres of kerbing, with the new kerb line aligned to the widened sidewalk. G5-quality material was used behind the new kerb and compacted to the required specifications. Approximately 250 m² of existing paving was removed as part of the upgrade. The newly completed pedestrian area
includes approximately 680 m² of 50mm bevel-edge pavers and 150m² of 80mm interlocking pavers. Four motor slopes were also constructed to provide smoother transitions between the roadway and sidewalk, with appropriate gradients and levels to support accessibility and drainage. The upgraded area was further enhanced through the installation of benches and bollards, providing a more functional and pedestrian-friendly environment. Safer intersection The project also included the construction of a raised intersection at Jeffrey Street and Schelde Street. The raised intersection is intended to encourage reduced vehicle speeds and improve visibility and safety at a point where pedestrians and motorists interact. Bornman said road safety and accessibility remain important priorities for the municipality.
“Our communities need infrastructure that works for everyone – including pedestrians, motorists, children, older residents and people with mobility challenges. The completed upgrades improve the way people move through this area and create a safer environment for all road users,” he said. The project also included the removal and responsible disposal of construction debris and surplus materials at an approved spoil location. Bornman said the completion of the project forms part of Kouga Local Municipality's ongoing investment in maintaining and improving infrastructure across its towns. “We remain committed to ensuring that municipal investment translates into visible improvements on the ground. A wider sidewalk, safer crossing and improved intersection may seem like relatively small interventions, but together they contribute to a safer, more accessible and better-functioning community,” he said.

AR Boards & Hardware paints Pellsrus crèche to mark Heritage Day A crèche in the Pellsrus community has received a fresh coat of paint and a brighter learning environment, thanks to an initiative by AR Boards & Hardware on Heritage Day, 24 September. From a letter to a plan of action The project came about after the crèche sent a letter to the business requesting assistance. Members of the AR Boards team visited the premises to assess the needs firsthand, and what they saw moved them to act. “Seeing the condition of the facilities firsthand touched us deeply and made us realise that we could not simply walk away without doing something to help,” the business team decided. For AR Boards, Heritage Day was the right mo-

ment to turn that commitment into action. The team painted and refreshed the front play area, including the swings, and worked on the interior walls in the rear section of the premises, creating a cleaner and more welcoming space for the children. Community spirit on full display A young person from the local community volunteered their time to join the painting team on the day, and the response from teachers and the wider school community was one of gratitude and enthusiasm. “The teachers were deeply appreciative of the support and the transformation of the school environment. Their gratitude, together with the enthusiasm of the young people involved, reminded us of the positive impact that can be created when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” the business said. More than just a business For AR Boards, giving back to the Pellsrus community is about more than simply operating within it. The company believes it has a responsibility to contribute positively to the people and places around it, particularly where there is a genuine need for support. “This project gave us an opportunity to make a practical difference by improving a space where children learn, play and grow. We also wanted to encourage community involvement and show that when businesses and local residents work together, even a small contribution can create a meaningful and lasting impact,” the business said. Completing the project was a rewarding experience for the team, who hope to continue supporting initiatives that benefit the wider Jeffreys Bay community. Future projects could focus on youth, environmental improvement, community spaces, local events and organisations in need. Local training opens doors to global wind energy careers LOCAL community members are accessing wind energy technical training that is sought after not only in the local renewable energy sector, but also globally. One example is Humansdorp local, Kanyisa Goveni, who graduated just over a year ago and is now permanently employed as a Wind Turbine Service Technician, servicing wind turbines in Germany. Her rapid career progression demonstrates the quality and international relevance of the renewable energy skills being developed in South Africa, as well as the opportunities that specialised, industry-aligned training can unlock for young people. “The Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm Wind Turbine Service Technician training programme set me up perfectly with the practical and technical skills needed to enter the industry. My hands-on experience and strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical processes positioned me well to pursue opportunities both locally and abroad,” said Goveni. Open to technically qualified young people from communities surrounding Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, the programme is designed to build on participants’ existing electrical, mechanical or mechatronics qualifications, equipping them with the specialised skills and practical experience needed to pursue careers as wind turbine technicians. The true measure of the programme’s success lies in its graduates’ ability to turn their training into meaningful career opportunities. Nonini Makhothe, Economic Development Manager at the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, said, “Seeing graduates secure technical roles within South Africa’s renewable energy sector and now seeing Kanyisa take the skills she developed here into an international wind energy environment is a powerful demonstration of what industry-aligned training can
achieve. “It shows that when young people are given access to the right technical skills and practical experience, they can compete for opportunities both at home and internationally.” Since officially joining the team in Germany last month, Goveni has undergone further technical and service training, gaining exposure to new technologies and an international operating environment. Once her training is complete, she will be placed within one of the company’s 11 service regions, with the opportunity to work across different wind farms. Jan Neuhann, Managing Director at ENERTRAG Service GmbH, explained why he and his team chose Goveni for the role: “Kanyisa’s perseverance, positive attitude and technical background are what convinced us to select her for our Service Technician Relocation Programme. “She is only a few weeks into her new role but is already making impressive progress and demonstrating her ability to learn quickly. We are confident that she has the skills and determination to build a successful career within our service team.” Goveni is one of 10 local young people to have benefited from this industry-specific technical training programme, funded by the wind farm. Many graduates have since gone on to secure internship and trainee positions within the renewable energy sector. Most recently, Simanyene Blouw took up a position as a trainee Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Technician with global green technology company, Envision Energy, at its facility in Nieuwehoop, Northern Cape. “I already had a mechanical engineering background, but the programme filled the gap on the electrical side. That combination positioned me well for a role that requires an understanding of both the mechanical and electrical aspects of the equipment,” said Blouw.

Ocean View social worker gives back to community RAZAAN PLAATJIES IN Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay, children and families are receiving support through tutoring and a weekly soup kitchen aimed at helping those in need. The initiatives form part of the work being done by social worker, Andiswa Qhoboshiyane, through her work at the non-profit organisation On Eagles Wings, as well as through her personal efforts to support people in the community. Qhoboshiyane’s tutoring of children forms part of her work at On Eagles Wings, where she has opportunities to support children and contribute to their education and development. “My experience in tutoring children at school has been very rewarding. I assist learners with their schoolwork, encourage them to participate in class and support them when they struggle to understand certain topics,” said Qhoboshiyane. She said she has seen improvements in learners’ marks, understanding and participation. “Seeing their progress has inspired me because I can see that my efforts are making a difference in their learning process. “It has given me a sense of purpose and encouraged me to continue supporting children in their education,” said Qhoboshiyane. According to her, tutoring is not only about helping learners with their schoolwork, but also about encouraging them, building their confidence and making them feel supported. Qhoboshiyane also runs a soup kitchen, which she describes as her way of giving back to the community. Food is distributed once a week, every Wednesday, with approximately 30 people, mainly children, attending the soup
kitchen each week. “Coming from an area where many people are unemployed, I have seen how difficult it can be for families to meet their basic needs. Some children do not know where their next meal is going to come from,” said Qhoboshiyane. “The soup kitchen gives them something to eat and provides some relief to families in the community.” Qhoboshiyane said the initiative goes beyond providing food, aiming instead to offer care, dignity and support to people facing difficult circumstances.
Andiswa Qhoboshiyane.
The soup kitchen started on 22 July after she was inspired by the needs she witnessed in her community. “I wanted to do something practical that could make a difference, even if I am helping one person at a time. That is what motivated me to start the soup kitchen and continue serving the community,” said Qhoboshiyane. She said seeing the needs of people around her and knowing she can play a small part in making someone’s life better has inspired her to continue supporting the community.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
“Seeing children receive food, improve at school or simply feel supported motivates me to continue,” said Qhoboshiyane. She believes that helping others does not always require having a lot of resources and that sometimes her time, effort, skills and willingness to help can make a meaningful difference. In recognition of her community work, Qhoboshiyane was recently nominated for the Kouga Municipality’s StrongHer International Award. According to the municipality, the award recognises women who uplift and inspire their communities. Qhoboshiyane described being nominated as a wonderful and meaningful experience. “It made me feel appreciated and showed me that the work I am doing in my community is being noticed,” said Qhoboshiyane. “It was an honour to be part of the competition and to be recognised alongside other women who are also making a difference.” Qhoboshiyane said the experience encouraged her to continue believing in the work she does and supporting her community. She said she remains grateful for every opportunity to serve and support those around her. “Through tutoring, the soup kitchen and other community activities, I have learned that small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact,” said Qhoboshiyane. She said her goal is to continue supporting children and families, creating awareness about important social issues and contributing positively to her community. “I believe that real change starts when people are willing to come together and support one another,” said Qhoboshiyane.

SONDER GRENSE:
FOCUS ON: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Khanyi Bailey’s journey of fear, faith and survival ALULUTHO MADOLO EVERY October, the world turns pink. Ribbons appear on lapels and campaigns flood social media with one urgent message: know your body, check your breasts and act early. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a global call to action. It also changed the life of Khanyi Bailey from Humansdorp forever. Bailey is a mother of two kids. In July, while visiting her brother in Jeffreys Bay, she felt a lump in her breast during a morning shower, and she claims it was not painful. Her cousin confirmed it was a lump.
Bailey said that at first, she delayed and she eventually sought help and was transferred to Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha for tests. Squarely within Breast Cancer Awareness Month on 27 October 2025, Bailey sat in the hospital and heard the doctor say, “You have breast cancer.” A month dedicated to awareness had delivered her the very thing it urges everyone to watch for. “I screamed and cried when I heard the news; my ears just closed, my heart was beating faster, and I started to shake. The nurse comforted me, and she was the first person to give me hope,” she said.

In the days that followed, Bailey became consumed by fear. She photographed her breast daily, withdrew from social contact, and panicked at ordinary ailments, convinced each was a sign the cancer was spreading. Yet she also sought answers through researching online, finding survivors on TikTok, and helping form a WhatsApp support group with fellow patients. “I was given two options for the lump removal and two weeks to choose between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy,” Bailey said. The oncology panel favoured removing the entire breast, but she chose the lumpectomy after consulting other survivors. Radiation had to follow within three months, but the hospital had a single radiotherapy machine with a ten-month waiting list. Private treatment was unaffordable even if she sold her belongings. She had surgery on 25 November 2025. The lumpectomy removed roughly half her breast. “I woke up in pain, thirsty and dizzy with a drain bag under my armpit. I was inspired by the strength of other patients, who had undergone bilateral mastectomies.” She said recovering at home was painful and emotional; she cried often, but she was glad that her family was there to support her. Bailey’s treatment is complete, but her journey continues. She is still on treatment, daily medication and pain pills. Yet through it all, she credits her survival to hope, faith, and the women who walked
Khanyi Bailey’s breast cancer diagnosis fell squarely within October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Her story is a reminder of why it matters. PHOTO: SUPPLIED beside her. Her story is a living testament to why October matters. She urges everyone to check their bodies regularly, seek help without delay, and bring support to appointments. Behind every pink ribbon is a person like Bailey, a mother, a fighter, a survivor for whom Breast Cancer Awareness Month was not just a campaign, but the month that changed everything.

Jeffreys Bay rugby star takes his talents to Scotland ALULUTHO MADOLO A TEENAGER from Jeffreys Bay is spending three months at one of Scotland’s leading rugby schools. Joshua Robyn (16) captains Grey High School’s u/16 rugby team in Gqeberha. He arrived at Strathallan School near Perth, Scotland, after being nominated by former Springbok prop Robbi Kempson, Grey’s Head of Rugby. Strathallan is no ordinary school. Its rugby academy has produced more than 40 international age-grade players and nine full Scottish internationals over the past decade. Among its most celebrated alumni is Glasgow Warriors and Scotland tighthead prop Zander Fagerson, the same position Joshua plays. The invitation is the latest milestone in a journey that began when he was just a toddler. “I told my mom I wanted to play rugby when I was about two years old,” Joshua recalls. “My dad had enrolled me for soccer, but I only ever wanted rugby.” He got his wish at the age of six, pulling on a jersey for the Junior Lions team in Johannesburg. His mother, Maritza Robyn, remembers those early days vividly. Maritza said her son had always had magic hands. From a very young age, he was regularly asked to demonstrate his passing a ball left and right and to analyse the opponents’ game plans, even at u/9 level. “There was also a moment, early on, that revealed the kind of boy Joshua was becoming. At a tournament in Johannesburg, he was named man of the match twice. The second time, he politely declined the medal,” she added. “He told the coach, 'No, thank you,' to the second medal because he already had one. He said they could rather give that medal to another child.” She described her son as someone who always loved his teammates and protected them. That instinct to put others first has followed Joshua throughout his career. At Jeffreys Bay Primary School, he

It has made me stronger in my walk with God and more determined to become a Bok one day,” Robyn said. He said Kempson has been the biggest influence on his rugby development. “Learning from someone who has played at the highest level has been incredible,”

ber after progressing through the school, regional and provincial rounds. According to a statement by the Koukamma Municipality, Toyi began her spelling journey in 2024 as a Grade 5 learner at Woodlands Primary School, where she was crowned the school champion. In 2025, she travelled to Gqeberha to participate at the next level and received a Certificate of Recognition for her achievement. In 2026, she once again emerged as the school champion and proceeded to compete in the Regional Competition in Jeffreys Bay, where she successfully advanced to the provincial level and subsequently qualified for the National Competition. She will represent her school and the Koukamma community at the National Competition on 3 October in Cape Town. The competition is supported by the Sanlam Foundation, Stellenbosch University and Words Open World (WOW), whose contributions play an important role in promoting literacy, language development and educational excellence among young learners. Koukamma Municipality Mayor, Sam Vuso, congratulated Toyi on her outstanding accomplishment and commended her dedication, hard work, determination and commitment to learning. “Sinovuyo Toyi, your achievement is a source of pride for your school, your family and the entire Koukamma community. We encourage you to continue believing in yourself, working hard and pursuing your dreams. May you continue to inspire other young people to embrace education and strive for excellence. We wish you every success at the National Competition,” said Vuso.
he added. At Grey High, he was vice-captain of the u/14A team in 2024 and the u/15A team in 2025. This year, he captained Grey’s u/16 side and earned selection as the starting tighthead prop for the Eastern Province u/16 Grant Khomo team, South Africa's premier inter-provincial tournament for that age group. “It was a challenging year. I faced a lot of challenges, but dedication and perseverance got me through,” said Robyn.

His advice to other youngsters chasing the same dream is grounded in the kind of hard-earned realism that has shaped his own path. “Work hard and never skip a workout; there will always be someone better than you, so you have to keep pushing.” For his mother, the journey has been one of quiet pride. “As his family, we are proud of what Joshua has achieved and of the leadership he has shown from primary school through to his rugby teams,” she said.

"Hierdie is werklik ’n spoggeleentheid.
Jeffreys Bay tide table: 1 to 7 October 2026
HANNES SCHOEMAN
