St Francis Bay Animal Expo returns for third year RAZAAN PLAATJIES ANIMAL welfare advocates across the Kouga region will unite for a common cause on 20 December, as St Francis Bay prepares to host its third annual Animal Expo at the Albert Saunders Building, 150 St Francis Drive, from 09:00 to 12 noon. Samantha Gie, co-founder of Oyster Bay Animal Welfare and organiser of the event, said that the community event will showcase the collaborative efforts of five dedicated welfare organisations working tire-
lessly to care for domestic animals throughout the area. These organisations include St Francis Animal Rescue, SPCA Assisi from Humansdorp, JBay Animal Rescue, Oyster Bay Animal Welfare, and Spay it Forward. "All of these organisations are run by a phenomenal team of women who really dedicate their lives to looking after and caring for the various domestic cats and dogs in the Kouga region who live in the townships," said Gie. "We have had the privilege of working with all of them."
Paulene Hardy from Spay it Forward at the previous Animal Expo.
Gie said that the expo will provide participating organisations with opportunities to sell goods, promote their work, and raise funds through collection tins and product stalls. "We also do a very large Christmas tree where we place tags for each of the welfare organisations for the various cats and dogs in their care, so that the dogs and cats can get a nice treat whether it's a nice new toy, food or a new blanket," said Gie. She further said that the Rotary Club St Francis Bay will provide cash donations to each welfare organisation participating in the expo. Last year, each organisation received R30,000 from the Rotary Club. Gie said that additional participants include the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), who will discuss their coastal conservation work with the public. Furthermore, local business, Sandy Paws Pet Pantry and Accessories, will showcase their products alongside other pet services. "We just hope that the event gives the organisations involved an opportunity to raise some much-needed funding and awareness for the fantastic work that they do," said Gie. Co-organiser Tracy Degoumois said that the "Unpoison Kouga" com-
From left are Sheena Ruth, Susan Rae Fox and Jenny Pike from St Francis Animal Rescue at the previous Animal Expo. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED munity initiative will also be present at the expo. She said that the initiative will provide visitors with the opportunity to learn about safer alternatives to household poisons and gain a deeper understanding of the devastating impact that commonly available commercial poisons have on wildlife and domestic animals in the region. Degoumois said that owls, in particular, have been severely affected in the Kouga area, with many dying agonising deaths from secondary
poisoning. She said that this initiative aims to raise awareness of a much larger, largely hidden crisis affecting our entire ecosystem. "This annual event is a great opportunity to learn about all the valuable work taking place in our animal community and support these incredible organisations," said Degoumois. New study to boost local pig farming sector SUPPORTING small-scale farming enterprises is vital for strengthening local food systems, creating economic opportunities, and building resilient rural communities. To help advance this goal, new research has commenced in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality to better understand the state of pig farming within local communities. The study will assess current production conditions, identify challenges, and map opportunities for growth across the value chain. The study, commissioned by Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, builds on several years of support provided to Siyavuma Piggery, a small-scale
operation based in Kruisfontein. This support has helped the piggery steadily strengthen its operations, most recently through the renovation of a pig enclosure to enhance animal welfare and production efficiency. Nonini Makhothe, Economic Development Specialist for Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, which is funding the research study, said, "Agriculture is one of the dominant sectors in our municipal area, and we believe that piggery production could become an important subsector. Given this and the high mortality rate of pigs in the area, largely due to inadequate infrastructure, we
have prioritised support for local piggeries through infrastructure investment, skills development, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. This approach helps drive meaningful rural enterprise growth and diversification." It is anticipated that the study's findings will assist local stakeholders in stimulating a more sustainable pork value chain, creating jobs, strengthening food security, and building a network of capable local suppliers such as Siyavuma Piggery. Siyavuma is a strong example of what becomes possible when local agripreneurs receive target-
ed, long-term support. In recent years, improved infrastructure, specialised equipment, better waste management systems, and ongoing business training have helped transform the piggery into a more sustainable operation that provides work opportunities to community members. This support is especially significant given the farm's previous 80% piglet mortality rate in 2023. Thanks to a new farrowing house, improved gestation facilities, and ongoing training and mentorship, the farm has made remarkable progress, reducing mortality to 10% by September 2025 and now moving
steadily toward the industry-standard target of 8%. Marvin Witbooi, Chairperson of Siyavuma Piggery, said, "Thanks to the support, we are now in a better position to plan for growth. Going forward, we aim to expand our herd, improve our breeding management, and increase the amount of pork we can supply to local markets. The support has given us a stronger and more stable foundation to build on." With the commissioning of this new study, Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm continues to invest in local economic development, helping to build stability within the surrounding community.

Blue-eyed Noah is‘Kouga Express’Christmas baby RAZAAN PLAATJIES WHEN the Oosthuizen family from Jeffreys Bay entered their bundle of joy into this year's Kouga Express Christmas Baby competition, they never expected to take home the top prize, but fivemonth-old Noah Oosthuizen, with his infectious smile and sparkling blue eyes, has officially been crowned this year's Christmas baby winner. Noah's mother, Nicaile, said that since her son is such a happy baby who loves to smile, she thought that he could stand a chance to win the competition. With encouragement from both Noah's grandmothers, Tilita Fevrier and Marie Oosthuizen, they entered and were pleasantly surprised to learn that he had won. "My husband, Amand, and I laughed and really enjoyed the moment. We didn't expect him to win, but it sure did feel good, and we're excited to give a copy of the newspaper to Noah's great-grandma and grandparents," said Nicaile. Born at home surrounded by his loved ones on 28 June, Noah has been bringing joy to the Oosthuizen household alongside his 2-year-old big brother, Eliah, who always makes him smile. Having experienced a miscarriage before, Noah's arrival was particularly meaningful for the family. Despite a challenging pregnancy with extreme nausea, anaemia, and fatigue,Nicaile said that her birth experience was beautiful. "My birth experience was amazing. I had an unmedicated birth in my lounge with the best birth team. It was such an amazing, sacred experience," said Nicaile. "I felt the Lord's presence, and there were fairy lights, calm music, and a birthing pool. Surrounding the birthing pool were my husband, mother, mother-in-law and sister. Everyone played such important roles in helping me manage the birth." The name Noah, meaning "rest," was a meaningful choice, and true to his name, he has brought
a sense of peace to the family, even with the challenges of caring for two children under two. "The initial adjustment was difficult with two under two. Postpartum is not easy, but I absolutely love my boys and would sacrifice my life for them," said Nicaile. "Of course, life has its challenges and having two young kids at home all day is not easy, but there is so much joy that overpowers the difficult times." Even at five months old, Noah's personality is already emerging. The family lovingly calls him "Noey," while his brother Eliah coined the nickname "Noey Boey." Nicaile said that Noah is a very calm and happy boy. He loves people and is very inquisitive. She said that he also loves jazz and classical music, and he laughs a lot. Noah's favourite activities include playing in water and watching his father play the guitar. Nicaile said that Noah's first Christmas Eve will be spent with her in-laws in Oyster Bay. On Christmas Day, they will attend church at Jeffreys Bay Bible Church, a church community where Nicaile said her boys feel loved and welcomed. Thereafter, they will spend the day with Nicaile's parents. She said that they will also be starting a new family tradition this year which they are excited about. "After spending time with family, we will drive along the Christmas lights route and then go home to watch a Christmas movie with our kids. Our main focus for Christmas is teaching our kids that Jesus is the reason for the season," said Nicaile. With one great-grandmother, four grandparents, 12 aunts and uncles, one cousin and another on the way, she said that Noah is blessed with a large support system. "Noah is such a blessed boy who is loved by so many. It takes a village to raise a child, and I can say he has a strong, loving village," said Nicaile. "I would like to thank my mother and husband because without them, I would not be able to raise these two boys."

Kouga’s own Joshua Jansen crowned Mr Teen World 2025 MARCIA BOYENS JOSHUA Jansen (19), a local teen from Jeffreys Bay, has returned to South Africa with the Mr Teen World 2025 title. The international competition, which brings together contestants from more than 20 countries, took place earlier in November and assessed participants on more than physical presentation alone. During the pageant, contestants took part in interviews, public appearances, and group activities designed to evaluate confidence, discipline, and cross-cultural engagement. For Jansen, the experience provided exposure to a wide range of
perspectives, as he spent several weeks alongside young men from diverse social, cultural and religious backgrounds. The competition required extensive preparation, with a demanding schedule that included rehearsals, interviews, and onstage evaluations. Jansen has described the experience as one that reinforced the importance of consistency and self-discipline, particularly in high-pressure environments. As titleholder, Jansen will serve a year-long term as Mr Teen World 2025. His responsibilities include attending official events, participating in youth-oriented initiatives, and acting as an ambassador for the organisation. The role places a strong empha-
sis on positive representation and community engagement, particularly among young people navigating issues related to identity, confidence and purpose. Looking ahead, Jansen plans to continue his involvement in youth-focused projects. These include the development of his podcast, which centres on conversations relevant to young people, as well as ongoing mentorship and creative initiatives aligned with his personal values. His focus, he says, will remain on long-term impact rather than visibility. Jansen’s achievement places Kouga on the international pageant map and highlights the growing presence of South African youth on global platforms.

R385,000 incentive boosts production fortunes of Hankey Cooperative A ONCE-INFORMAL family project has become one of the Sarah Baartman district’s most promising agribusiness success stories. Established in 2015 in Hankey, Ukuvuka Ekuseni Agricultural Primary Cooperative, founded by Tommy Thys, farms vegetables on 10,72 hectares in a region dominated by citrus farming. The cooperative produces cabbage, pumpkin, butternut, beetroot, and cauliflower, making it one of only four vegetable producers in the area. The cooperative now harvests every two to three months, producing 30,000 to 50,000 cabbages, 5,000 cauliflowers, 5,000 broccoli, Pumpkin and butternut across 3 hectares each, as well as Beetroot and carrots on 0,5 hectares each. The produce is sold at the Markman Market in Gqeberha. During peak harvest seasons, they employ 14 to 18 casual workers, providing vital short-term jobs in the community. The farm also keeps 14 pigs and 10 cattle, further diversifying income streams. “For me, this cooperative is
about securing a future for my children. I told them there are no jobs waiting in South Africa. We must build something that will carry them long after I’m gone,” says Thys. His wife, Joyce, and children, Liana, Victoria, and Romano, now jointly run operations, building generational wealth through the land they manage together. Thys says the turning point for the cooperative came when they received a R385,774.66 incentive from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation’s (ECDC) Imvaba Cooperatives Fund, following a referral from a Department of Agriculture official who admired the family’s work ethic. “Before the financial incentive, we struggled to hire tractor implements at up to R250 per hour, often for several days at a time. The grant enabled Thys to purchase implements and upgrade irrigation systems. These changes have dramatically reduced operational costs and boosted production. “The workload is so much lighter now. Imvaba came at the right time. I’m very grateful,” Thys
says. ECDC Acting Chief Executive Officer Lulama Mbobo-Vava says the Corporation uses the Imvaba Co-operatives Fund to support the sustainability of primary co-operatives in the Eastern Cape. “For example, in the 2024/25 financial year, the ECDC disbursed R17,58 million to 57 cooperatives and enterprising individuals that are part of cooperatives through the ECDC-administered Imvaba Cooperatives Fund. “The Imvaba Cooperative Fund specifically fosters entrepreneurial development, encourages self-employment, and contributes to poverty alleviation, while enhancing the role of cooperatives in the provincial economy. Supported sectors include agriculture and agro-processing, manufacturing (timber, textiles, chemicals, automotive, metal processing), retail, services, creative industries (arts and crafts), tourism, the green economy (biofuels and renewable energy), business process outsourcing (telecoms), ICT, film production, textiles, and the ocean’s economy,” says Mbobo-Vava.
With A-grade vegetables that already meet the standards of major retailers such as Spar, Shoprite and Woolworths, the cooperative is positioned for large-scale commercial supply. The only barrier is the lack of a packhouse required for packaging and dispatching produce according to retail specifications. “The demand is there; the quality is there. All we need now is a packhouse to unlock those opportunities,” Thys explains. But their impact extends beyond economics. Thys regularly donates produce to the local soup kitchen, Hankey Secondary School, and bereaved families in need. Looking ahead, the family hopes to acquire additional land, construct a fully-equipped packhouse, expand employment, and supply national retailers consistently. Thys also intends to partner with local agricultural schools to offer practical on-farm training. “Young people want to farm,” he says. You cannot learn farming in a classroom. We just need to open the doors for the next generation,” Thys explains.

Young voice for wildlife brings Paradise community together
Cherished Christmas traditions remembered
MARCIA BOYENS
Jacobus Jantjes: I wish we could return to a time when there was door-to-door carolling with groups of people bundled up, singing carols around the neighbourhood. This spreads joy, builds the community, and it feels magical. Soria Swart: The first was the "Christmas Bed." In our family, Christmas meant gathering at my grandparents' home, where cousins from all over would descend on the house, creating one noisy, joyful bundle. Another cherished tradition was the annual Christmas Concert. Every cousin, big or small, had a role. And then there were the homemade Christmas decorations. We made everything
ourselves: paper chains, painted pinecones, and cotton-wool snow. Loulita Vosloo: Most family members and extended family living nearby were all together for the Christmas holiday. These days, everyone is scattered around the world, and nobody sees each other. Gianni Dembech: I wish everyone could experience Christmas with the same spirit they had as a child and with the same enthusiasm for being together as a family. Today, however, the true spirit of Christmas is lost among gifts, unnecessary expenses and falsehoods. Rika van Jaarsveld: I miss spending time with the whole family, aunties, uncles, and cous-
ins between Christmas and New Year. I also miss how my grandma knitted slaapkouse for all of us as presents. Pastor Sakhekile Mbili: Christmas used to be a big day. We used to go to church in the morning, and when we came back, dinner was ready. Now it's not happening. Families used to gather together, eating and enjoying Christmas together. Now it's not happening. Children used to go out asking for Christmas gifts in the neighbourhood. They would receive biscuits, chips, and sweets to celebrate Christmas. That is no longer happening. The children of today are drinking alcohol on Christmas Day.

AT just 16 years old, Leah Schofield has sparked a movement that is slowing traffic and bringing the community together in Paradise Beach. While visiting her grandparents in Paradise Beach earlier this year, Leah couldn’t help but notice how cars were speeding through the area, often unaware of the life that exists beyond their windscreens. Along the roadside, she began seeing the heartbreaking result of this: local wildlife that hadn’t made it across in time. As a passionate animal lover, the con-

cern stayed with her. “I wanted to be a voice for the voiceless,” Leah shared. She decided to take action while here on holiday, and she created a handmade poster reminding drivers to slow down for wildlife and shared a photo of it on the Paradise Community WhatsApp group. What happened next exceeded anything she could have imagined. The community immediately embraced the idea, and residents and visitors alike fell in love with the initiative. What started as one young girl’s concern quickly grew into a shared mission, with people of all ages wanting to get involved. The idea soon evolved into a road sign competition encouraging children, young people and adults to create their own posters reminding drivers to slow down for wildlife. The competition is open to all Paradise Beach residents and visitors, welcomes all ages, allows unlimited entries, and runs until 22 December, with signs needing to be removed by 12 January. Entries are shared on the Paradise Community WhatsApp group, where further details are also available. Leah says the response has been incredibly uplifting. “It feels so wholesome to see how everyone has banded together,” she said. “I can already see a difference in how people are driving.” Beyond raising awareness about speeding, the initiative has strengthened the sense of connection within the Paradise Beach community, proving that meaningful change can begin with one simple act of care. Looking ahead, Leah hopes the project will continue to grow. One of her dreams is to turn it into an annual December tradition, possibly even creating a scavenger hunt where families can spot the posters and learn more about the animals that call Paradise Beach home. Leah Schofield has shown that you’re never too young to make a difference and that slowing down can save lives.
AS the countdown to Christmas begins, Kouga Express posed a few questions to readers. "Thinking back on your childhood days, what are some of the Christmas traditions you wish could return?" These were their responses.
Gianni Dembech.

SA Water Sports‘founder’honoured at inaugural Surf Expo Africa THE inaugural Surf Expo Africa (SEA) paid special tribute to one of South African surfing and sailing's most iconic founding fathers, John Whitmore, affectionately known as "The Oom". The expo, which took place at the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) on 29 and 30 November, brought together watersports, wellness and travel experts and enthusiasts for a two-day programme featuring speakers, entertainment, and ocean and lifestyle activities. A major highlight on the programme was a special presentation by author Miles Masterson, who spoke about Whitmore's extraordinary life and legacy, drawn from his book The Oom – The Biography of South African Water Sports Pioneer John Whitmore. Known as the "Godfather of South African Surfing," Whitmore's contribution to the sport stretches far beyond the surf breaks he pioneered. Known for his huge personality, pioneering spirit and unwavering belief that surfing could become a unifying cultural force, Whitmore shaped not only early South African surf culture but also the surf industry itself, and laid the foundations of many of the competitive pathways that define the sport in South Africa today, including the founding of the WPSA, SASA and Springbok surfing. Aside from being the first to ride many of South Africa's most iconic waves, such as Kommetjie, St Francis, Jeffreys Bay and Elands Bay, Whitmore made an impact in sever-
polyurethane surfboard blanks in Cape Town, distributing them nationwide to surf shops and shapers across South Africa • 1971: Introduced the Hobie Cat to South Africa and opened Cape Town's first independent sailboat factory, The Cattery, in Harrington Street • 1978: Obtained the sole licence to manufacture the Morey Boogie bodyboard in South Africa, introducing yet another ocean sport and industry to the country.

al other ways: • 1954: Created South Africa's first surfing brand, Whitmore Surfboards, first made from wood, then polystyrene foam • 1962: Opened Cape Town's first retail outlet, selling imported American surf gear, stickers and t-shirts • 1964: Manufactured the first modern polyurethane foam surfboards in South Africa using foam cores imported from Hobie Alter in California • 1965: Began Cape Town's first surf and weather report on Radio Good Hope • 1966: Starred in and played a key role in the success of Bruce Brown's iconic 1960s surf and travel documentary The Endless Summer • 1968: Began manufacturing Clark Foam
Masterson's biography is filled with stories that shine a light on Whitmore's rebellious, adventurous, and mischievous personality, as well as his ingrained marketing and business savvy. The book tells how Whitmore became fixated with the little-known sport of surfing after seeing a swimwear advert in an American diving magazine. He went on to build his own surfboard, a 12-foot, 40kg craft, which he took out for its maiden surf at Glen Beach in Camps Bay. The author describes how that was the start of his life's purpose. "The glide of surfing was a primal sensation to which John would become joyously enslaved for the rest of his life and one that he would soon spread to countless others," said Masterson. This story and dozens more illustrate why Whitmore remains one of the most beloved characters in the history of local surf culture. The organisers of Surf Expo Africa said it was only right that their inaugural event honoured the man who laid the foundation for all that followed.
John Whitmore at Glen Beach, mid-1950s. "You can't tell the story of South African surfing or the surf industry without starting with John Whitmore," said Masterson. "He was a pioneer, a visionary, and a natural leader. More than that, he was a storyteller and a connector; he brought people together and pushed the sport forward at every turn." Masterson was joined by pioneering surf industry legends, Robin Solomon, founder of Cape Town's first surf shop, Peter Wright of The Corner Surf Shop, and 1960s SA women's surfing pioneer Bernie Shelly, to discuss John Whitmore's enduring influence as the godfather of South
African beach culture. Attendees had the opportunity to meet the author, buy the book at the stand of Cape Town–based environmental NGO Protect the West Coast (PTWC), and have their copies signed. More than R8,000 was raised for PTWC, with 50% of all SEA book sales donated to the organisation. The presentation on Saturday afternoon was one of the expo's highlights, offering rare insight into Whitmore's personal life, early surf exploration, business ventures, and the profound impact he had on the local and global surf community.

KOUGA KOLLIG:
In retrospeksie was haar pos as senior dosent in Inligtingstegnologie ’n gunstelingfase. Afgesien van haar werk by KLM in kajuitkwaliteit as besigheidsintelligensie-konsultant, moes sy ook as tipe Industriële "spioen" werk teen mededingende lugvaartmaatskappye.

Haar lewensfilosofie is effe ongewoon.

Jeffreys Bay Primary learners shine at championships
Athletes from Jeffreys Bay Primary School were selected for the Eastern Province Athletics team to compete at the Athletics South Africa Primary Sub-Youth Championships in Potchefstroom on 5 and 6 December. They all performed exceptionally well, with Marques Luiters being placed third in SA for u/13 long jump and Liah Wolf third in SA for u/11 triathlon, which includes hurdles, long jump, and 1,200m. Both participants received bronze medals. From left are Marques Luiters, Elrique Smith, Joe Joubert, Braiden Wolf and Liah Wolf.

FOTO: VERSKAF hy by die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe as wenner aangewys is.
