Vandals leave Hankey school facing R90,000 repair bill RAZAAN PLAATJIES HANKEY Senior Secondary School is appealing to businesses, parents and the wider community for assistance after a burglary and extensive vandalism left the school facing repair costs of up to R90,000. According to the school governing body treasurer, Cornelius Damons, the damage was discovered on the morning of 1 August, when the school’s caretaker alerted management to the break-in. Damons said several areas of the school had been targeted, including the school nutrition kitchen, the ladies’ bathroom and parts of the electrical infrastructure. “The school nutrition kitchen, the ladies’ bathroom and the ceiling were vandalised. The distribution board in the staff room was damaged, and the copper pipes were removed from two fridges in the staff room,” said Damons. He estimated that repairs would cost between R80,000 and R90,000. “That is money the school does not have,” said Damons. He confirmed that a case has been opened with the local police station, and forensic investigators have processed the scene. While the school has experienced break-ins in the past, Damons said this incident was unlike anything they had dealt with before. “We had break-ins before, but not on this

scale. It’s devastating,” said Damons. He warned that restoring the damaged facilities could take about three months, provided enough funds were raised quickly. “We want to appeal to businesses, parents and our community to step in and help,” said Damons. He added that the school governing body had discussed strengthening security measures once funding became available to prevent similar incidents in future. In a statement, the school described the incident as “a very sad day for Hankey Secondary School” and said that it was heartbreaking that an institution dedicated to giving learners hope and opportunities had become the target of senseless criminal acts. “Every broken sink, damaged classroom, stolen cable and act of vandalism is more than damage to a building; it is an attack on the education, dignity and future of our learners,” the statement said. The school called on residents to help protect the institution by reporting criminal activity and promoting respect for public property. Despite the setback, the school said it remained committed to rebuilding and continuing its mission of providing quality education. “Our children deserve better. Our community deserves better. Protect our school. Protect our learners. Protect their future,” the statement said. Police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, confirmed that a case of business bur-

door had been forced open and that a heater and a kettle were missing,” said McCarthy. “Furthermore, it was noticed that a power box had been opened and electrical wiring had been removed. The hand wash basins in the ablution facilities had also been removed from the wall and were found on the floor.” McCarthy urged anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to contact Detective Warrant Officer Jacobs on 067 598 1993 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or report it to their nearest police station. Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said the district strongly condemns the vandalism of school infrastructure. “Such criminal conduct disrupts teaching and learning, threatens the safety and dignity of learners, and diverts limited resources away from educational programmes,” said Mtima. He said an assessment of the damage will be undertaken, and the relevant infrastructure and safety units will be engaged to facilitate repairs and strengthen security at the school. Mtima said the district will continue to co-operate with SAPS and calls upon community members with information to assist the investigation.

Jeffreys Bay gang leader sentenced to life A NOTORIOUS Jeffreys Bay gang leader, who terrorised the local community through a campaign of violent crime, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. According to police spokesperson Capt Marius McCarthy Michael Smith was handed the sentence in the Humansdorp Magistrates' Court on 29 July, after being convicted on charges including murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, malicious damage to property and assault. He said Smith and his gang had orchestrated a campaign of terror involving widespread robberies and house break-ins. "Due to intense intimidation community members were initially too terrified to report

these crimes. To break this silence the investigating officer launched a dedicated community-awareness campaign urging residents to speak out." McCarthy said the initiative led to a critical breakthrough, when a brave community member came forward to report a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He said that, following this lead, detectives from the police's Jeffreys Bay serious and violent crime unit gathered crucial corroborating evidence. "On realising he was being sought by the police the accused fled and went into hiding outside Jeffreys Bay. “Through intelligence the investigating of-

ficers successfully located the suspect's hideout." McCarthy said the tactical response team was activated and the accused was swiftly apprehended. He said the police's Jeffreys Bay Serious and Violent Crime Unit meticulously investigated the cases. He said following several postponements during the bail application hearings the state successfully opposed bail, and Smith was remanded in custody throughout his trial until his conviction and life sentence for crimes including murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, malicious damage to property and assault. Sarah Baartman District Commissioner

Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso said: "This sentence sends an unequivocal message to criminal syndicates; your reign of terror will be dismantled and you will face the full might of the law." She highly commended the exceptional work of the Jeffreys Bay Serious and Violent Crime Unit detectives and the tactical-response team. "I want to salute the brave community members who found the courage to break their silence and partner with our investigating officer. This breakthrough proves that when the police and community stand together criminals have nowhere to hide. We will continue to protect our communities and reclaim our streets from gang violence."

SAPS mourns officer killed in N2 crash THE South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the man who died in a fatal crash involving his vehicle and two cash-in-transit vehicles on the N2 near Gamtoos Valley has been identified as Warrant Officer Ricardo George Roberts, who was based at the Mount Road Crime Intelligence Unit in Gqeberha. The Eastern Cape Department of Transport indicated that preliminary reports showed a vehicle was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it collided with one of the armoured vehicles. It said that, in an apparent attempt to avoid the collision, the second cash-in-tran-

sit vehicle veered off the road and down an embankment. The department also said the driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene, while two security guards from the armoured vehicles sustained injuries and were transported to hospital. Police spokesperson Col Siphokazi Mawisa said the SAPS Eastern Cape Management was saddened by Roberts' death, particularly when he was on duty. “Roberts was involved in a road accident on the N2 and he succumbed to his injuries.” She said the circumstances surrounding

the accident form part of an ongoing investigation by SAPS Thornhill. “The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness Services has been deployed to provide psychosocial support to the bereaved family and affected colleagues.” Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Vuyisile Ncata conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. “Losing a SAPS member is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by our men and women in blue in serving our communities. We mourn his passing and stand with his family during this difficult time.”

Kouga launches free online jobseeker database Cross-border mission reunites dog with owner

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

AN emotional reunion between a dog and his owner in Malawi has marked the successful conclusion of an extraordinary cross-border rescue effort by St Francis Animal Rescue after the pair were separated when alleged xenophobic unrest forced the owner to leave South Africa. Fireman, an Africanis dog belonging to Stephen Black Lion Singini, was safely reunited with his owner in Lilongwe after a carefully coordinated journey involving animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, transport specialists and donors from South Africa and Malawi. Founder and chairperson of St Francis Animal Rescue, Susan Rae Fox, said the organisation was relieved and grateful that both Stephen and Fireman had safely reached home after their remarkable journey. As previously reported, the organisation first met Singini six years ago when he brought Fireman, then a puppy, to one of its outreach programmes for vaccinations, deworming, and flea and tick treatment. Since then, the dog had become his constant companion while Singini worked in South Africa and supported his family in Malawi.

On 27 July, after being forced to return to Malawi, Singini entrusted Fireman to Fox. “Fireman was taken to kennels in Humansdorp to complete the final three days of the mandatory 30-day waiting period following his vaccinations before he was eligible to travel,” said Fox. She said the following day Singini began his lengthy journey home, travelling by bus from Humansdorp to Gqeberha, then to Gauteng, before continuing over six days to Malawi. On 30 July, Fox took Fireman to the Humansdorp Vet Clinic, where the veterinary certificate was signed by Dr Annelise Barker and the State Veterinarian. She said that they met Tanika Bessenger from Move @ Pet, who delivered a custom-built transport crate for Fireman. “After placing one of Stephen’s worn shirts inside the crate, Fireman climbed in and lay down calmly,” said Fox. She said Bessenger then transported Fireman to Gqeberha, where he remained in kennels before flying to Gauteng that evening. The following morning, Fireman boarded a flight to Lilongwe, where he was collected by Bev Trataris, a trustee of the Lilongwe SPCA. “Although Fireman was initially anxious after the flight, Bev was able to calm him before taking him to the SPCA. Because the kennels caused him stress, she instead cared for him at her home, where he spent two days enjoying walks and sleeping comfortably while waiting for Stephen to arrive,” said Fox. Meanwhile, Singini’s journey remained challenging. After reaching Blantyre, he reunited briefly with his daughter before travelling another five hours by bus to Lilongwe. Following an overnight stay with his uncle, he made his way to the Lilongwe SPCA the next morning. Fox said Singini waited outside, pacing anxiously until Fireman was released. “The dog recognised him almost immediately and ran into his arms with such excitement that he knocked his owner to the ground before covering him with affectionate hugs and licks,” said Fox. Later that day, the pair boarded a long-distance haulage truck that carried them part of the way to Karonga, near the Tanzanian border. After changing trucks during the early hours of the morning, they completed the final leg of their journey and arrived home later that afternoon, where they were warmly welcomed by Singini’s mother and youngest daughter. “St Francis Animal Rescue offers sincere and grateful thanks to all the kind donors whose funds made this journey possible and the wonderful people from Move @ Pet and the Lilongwe SPCA, who were so very generous with their time and so warm and loving towards Fireman,” said Fox. “St Francis Animal Rescue is deeply relieved and gratified that Stephen and Fireman are home safe after their incredible journey. We wish them all the best in their future together.”

KOUGA Local Municipality has launched a new Jobseeker Opportunities Database to help connect local residents with future internships, learnerships, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) projects, training initiatives and other temporary employment opportunities offered by the municipality. The free online platform is designed to make it easier for jobseekers living within the Kouga municipal area to register their details for future opportunities. Residents can complete the registration process without creating an account or remembering a password, making the system simple, accessible and user-friendly. Kouga Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman said the new database forms part of the municipality's ongoing commitment to improving access to skills development and employment opportunities while ensuring a fair and transparent process. "One of the greatest challenges facing our communities is unemployment. While the municipality cannot guarantee employment for every resident, we can create systems that ensure opportunities are advertised fairly and that local talent can be identified quickly when programmes become available," said Bornman. Residents who register can submit their personal information, educational qualifications, work experience, skills, languages and supporting documents for inclusion in the municipality's secure database. The municipality may use the information to identify and contact suitable candidates for internships, learnerships, EPWP projects, training programmes and other qualifying opportunities. Importantly, all information submitted through the portal is stored securely and is not publicly visible. Access is restricted to authorised municipal officials responsible for administering these programmes. Bornman emphasised that protecting residents' personal information remains a priority. "Residents can register with confidence, knowing that their information will be han-

dled securely and will only be accessed by authorised municipal officials for legitimate municipal recruitment and development programmes," said Bornman.

To complete the registration, residents should have the following information readily available: • South African ID or passport details.· Mobile number, email address and residential address within the Kouga municipal area; • Highest school grade and any qualifications obtained; • Skills, languages and employment history; • Driver's licence information and availability, where applicable; • A curriculum vitae (CV) and supporting documents, if requested. The registration process has been designed to be straightforward. First, applicants should prepare all their personal, educational and employment information. They can then complete the online form, ensuring that all the information is accurate and selecting the types of opportunities that interest them. Applicants must then provide consent for Kouga Local Municipality to securely store their information and contact them should suitable programmes become available. Once registered, residents are encouraged to keep their registration reference number and notify the municipality whenever their contact details or other information change. Bornman reminded residents that joining the database does not constitute an application for a specific vacancy and does not guarantee employment or selection. "The database serves as a register of local talent that enables the municipality to identify potential candidates more efficiently when opportunities arise. We encourage all eligible jobseekers to register and to keep their information up to date so they can be considered for future programmes," said Bornman. JEFFREYS BAY:

Twins to represent SA at international dance competition RAZAAN PLAATJIES TEN-YEAR-OLD Jeffreys Bay twins Ilke and Arnoux Hattingh, have thanked the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa and the Street Dance Association for providing dancers with the opportunity to achieve their Protea Colours in dance sport. The siblings, who flew to the United Kingdom on 10 August, will represent South Africa at the United Dance Organisation (UDO) World Championships from 12 to 16 August, becoming the first dancers from the Eastern Cape to compete at this level internationally. The siblings, who train at Limitless Dance Studio and are members of the Street Dance Association, qualified through their eligibility for the Eastern Cape Provincial Colours via the Federation of Dance Sport Eastern Cape. For Ilke and Arnoux, the opportunity marks the culmination of years of dedication, discipline and a shared passion for dance. Arnoux said his love for dance began with his enjoyment of music and movement. “As a young boy, I always enjoyed music and moving with it. My sister always showed so much enjoyment while dancing that it made me want to try it out,” said Arnoux. He started hip hop in 2023 before moving to Limitless Dance Studio in 2024 to dance alongside his sister. “When I first learned street dance, I felt excited and could not wait to learn more. I fell in love with street dance because it lets me be myself. I love the cool moves, the music and the energy,” said Arnoux. Ilke’s journey began even earlier, starting with ballet at the age of five before exploring rhythmic gymnastics and eventually settling at Limitless Dance Studio, where she currently trains in more than one dance style. “I love street dance because I can express myself and the energy makes me feel happy,” said Ilke. “I enjoy sharing this love for the sport with my brother. We can train together and challenge each other.” Arnoux has been dancing for four years, with three of those years alongside Coach Kirstin “Coach K” Silva at Limitless Dance Studio, while Ilke has danced for just over five years and is in her fourth year training with Kirstin. When the twins discovered they had been selected to represent South Africa at the UDO World Championships, they said they were initially shocked and surprised, but once reality settled in, the excitement and nervousness started. They added that representing the Eastern Cape and South Africa on an international stage was a proud moment and that they both felt honoured. The twins train from Monday to Friday for approximately 30 to 40 minutes, as well as a weekly 90-minute session with Kirstin. For Arnoux, one of the highlights of performing is the energy he receives from the audience, while Ilke enjoys express-

Ilke said Kirstin has been her biggest inspiration. “Coach K never stopped believing in me, and I am the dancer I am today because of her,” said Ilke. As they prepare to compete in the United Kingdom, the twins are looking forward to seeing dancers from around the world, learning new moves, performing on a global stage and meeting new people. Their goal is to return with a gold medal

for South Africa, but they also want to enjoy the experience and learn as much as possible. They also encouraged young dancers in the Eastern Cape to believe in themselves and never give up. Their mother, Juanita, said music and dancing have always been part of their lives. “They have loved music and dancing from a very young age. I cannot imagine either of them not dancing,” said Juanita. She said that watching their journey from their first dance classes to qualifying for an international competition had been incredible.

“They have built up so much confidence and discipline while maintaining a love for dance and energetic music,” said Juanita. She described learning that the twins would represent South Africa as an emotional moment for the family. “We were incredibly proud and honestly a little overwhelmed. Watching the twins work so hard, spend countless hours training, and stay dedicated to something they love has been inspiring,” said Juanita. “Hearing that they had qualified to represent South Africa made all the sacrifices worthwhile. We couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved at such a young age.” Juanita said she hopes the championships will give the twins the opportunity to enjoy every moment, learn, grow, make new friends and create lasting memories. “Success isn’t about winning. It’s about representing South Africa with pride, showing good sportsmanship, and coming home knowing they gave it their all,” said Juanita. Kirstin, owner of Limitless Dance Studio, said the twins’ dedication is what makes them stand out as performers. “Even when they are tired or have had a long day, they still show up and work hard. When they perform, you can see the dedication behind the movement,” said Kirstin. “They never give up, even if I challenge them with harder, more complex moves.” Kirstin said Ilke has a sweet smile that ignites the audience, and Arnoux has the strongest force behind his movement, with both dancers having grown significantly over the years. She said having dancers represent South Africa internationally is a major achievement for the studio. “It’s a huge accomplishment. My passion is for dancers to get the recognition they deserve for their hard work and dedication,” said Kirstin. “Receiving that level of recognition is outstanding for the studio. The hard work and hours we put in with the twins are paying off with them being recognised. It also motivates the rest of my studio to work hard.” Kirstin said the recognition of dance sport by the Sports Confederation of South Africa (SASCOC), including the awarding of Protea Colours, shows that dancers are putting in the same level of commitment as athletes in other sporting codes. “Dance has always been seen as an extramural activity, and we are never recognised for the countless hours, sweat and muscle aches we put in,” said Kirstin. She added that the achievement is particularly significant for the Eastern Cape, as it marks the province’s first time receiving these colours for Street Dance. Kirstin said the Dance Sports Club League has created opportunities for dancers from her studios in Gqeberha, Jeffreys Bay and Despatch to compete at regional and national level. “The platform gives all my clients the opportunities I strive for them to have,” said Kirstin.

AFRICAN DAWN:

Italian volunteer follows dream to help wildlife RAZAAN PLAATJIES AN Italian animal lover has travelled thousands of kilometres to volunteer at African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary near Thornhill, where she is spending 11 days helping to care for rescued birds and wildlife while gaining hands-on conservation experience. African Dawn management welcomed Caterina Giovinetti and said they were grateful she had chosen to spend her time at the sanctuary. "We are incredibly grateful that she has chosen to spend her time helping care for our feathered and furry residents. Volunteers like Caterina play a vital role in supporting our conservation and rehabilitation efforts, and we can't wait for her to become part of the African Dawn family," management said. Giovinetti discovered the sanctuary through Volunteer World while searching for a wildlife volunteering opportunity in South Africa. "I had wanted to come to South Africa for a long time, and I finally found the perfect opportunity to work with animals and experience my passion for them firsthand," said Giovinetti. Although she has only been at the sanctuary for a few days, Giovinetti said she settled in quickly thanks to the support she received. She described working with the animals as even more enjoyable than she had expected. "The work is not as hard as it might seem. In fact, it is fun, rewarding and something I genuinely look forward to every day," said Giovinetti. She said the experience had also influenced her future career plans and confirmed that she wanted to pursue a career focused on animals. Giovinetti added that African Dawn immediately stood out among the many volunteer opportunities she had considered. "As soon as I read about African Dawn, I knew it was the right place for me.

Caterina Giovinetti at the African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary. “I was excited by the chance to see and work with animals that I could never even imagine seeing in Italy. It immediately felt like a very special place," said Giovinetti. She said she was grateful for the opportunity despite being far from home, as it had given her the chance to do something she had always dreamed of and to discover a world that had always fascinated her. During her 11-day stay, Giovinetti will assist with preparing food, feeding the animals, cleaning enclosures and spending time with the sanctuary's animal residents. According to African Dawn man-

agement, volunteers typically begin preparing food at 05:00 before feeding starts at 07:00. The day also includes cleaning duties, further food preparation, afternoon feeding sessions and other daily tasks. Management said the number of international volunteers varies each year, with the sanctuary usually hosting more than 10 volunteers annually, the majority of whom come from Germany. Volunteers assist with caring for sick animals and helping to ensure all the birds and wildlife receive proper care, and no previous experience is required. Management said volunteer con-

tributions extend beyond their daily work, with all funds received from their volunteering going directly towards purchasing food for the animals. The sanctuary also benefits from lasting relationships with many former volunteers. "We still have old volunteers who constantly return or donate money or food on a regular basis," management said. Management said volunteer support remains essential, with volunteers helping to care for the sanctuary's resident animals while also contributing towards food purchases. Furthermore, hosting interna-

tional volunteers helps spread awareness about wildlife conservation by enabling people from around the world to learn about different animal species. "It's an amazing experience to work hands-on with all kinds of birds and animals. You care for species who cannot care for themselves anymore," management said. Despite the assistance it receives, management said one of its biggest ongoing challenges is securing sufficient financial support to provide the best possible care for its birds, animals and the people who look after them every day.

Michelle K is meer as net ’n gewone geskenkwinkel.

“My pa was baie lief vir mooi dekor en ’n mooi tuin. Hy het ons gereeld na uitstallings geneem. My ouma se huis was vol kosbare antieke meubels, terwyl my ma dol was oor kuns en matte.”

“Ek was altyd ’n stadsmeisie. Jeffreysbaai het egter baie vinnig vir my soos ’n knus kombers begin voel. Die inwoners en besoekers is altyd hartlik en vriendelik.” En wat hou die toekoms vir Michelle K in? “Ek hoop op nog 20 jaar se hiérwees vorentoe. Al kom ek werk toe met ’n ou kierietjie, hier wil ek my uitleef en hier wil ek bly!”

Michelle Klerck se winkel, Michelle K Gift Shop, is vanjaar 20 jaar oud.

‘THANK YOU, CHESLIN KOLBE!’

Young rugby fan’s birthday dream comes true RAZAAN PLAATJIES FOR eight-year-old amputee and rugby enthusiast, Oluthando “Olu” Nkosinkulu, his birthday on 5 August became a day he will never forget after his rugby hero, Springbok rugby star, Cheslin Kolbe, surprised him with a special video message. Oluthando, a learner at Hankey Primary School and a keen rugby player, was overwhelmed when he watched the video in which Cheslin wished him a happy birthday, praised his resilience and told him that his story was inspiring. “When I saw the video, my heart almost stopped, and my whole body was shivering,” said Oluthando. In the video, Cheslin told Oluthando he knew he had faced many challenges but had continued to rise above them. “I just want to say, I am massively proud of you,” said Cheslin. “You don’t let anything put you down, and you keep rising and enjoying yourself, no matter the circumstances or the challenges you face and go through.” Cheslin also encouraged Oluthando to continue working hard, enjoying his rugby and putting his faith in God. “Continue to believe and put your faith in God because he has a plan for each and every one of us,” said Cheslin. Cheslin ended the message by saying he hoped to meet Oluthando in person one day. “Your story alone is very inspiring, not just to me, but to a lot of people out there as well,”said Cheslin. For Oluthando, hearing those words from his favourite Springbok meant a great deal. “It felt good that my rugby hero also sees me as an inspiration, but he is my inspiration, and I want to be like him one day,” said Oluthando. His favourite part of the message was hearing Cheslin acknowledge the challenges he had faced. “It’s amazing to know that Cheslin knows my story,” said Oluthando. If he gets the opportunity to meet Cheslin, Oluthando already

The surprise was made possible after activist and social media personality, Billy Claasen, who is based in the Western Cape,

reached out to Oluthando’s mother, Natasha, after reading about their story in various news outlets last year. The two have remained in contact, and Billy recently arranged for Cheslin to record the birthday message, which he then shared with Natasha. Natasha said she had to ar-

range with Oluthando’s school for him to watch the video on his birthday. Cheslin’s message about faith in God also deeply resonated with Natasha, who has previously spoken about trusting God throughout her son’s journey. “I still believe that everything that happened in Olu’s life is

because I put my faith in God when I decided to keep Olu. I still think Olu is God’s reward to me, and that everything that happens to Olu is God’s reward to us,” said Natasha. “The video touched my heart, and it was amazing to hear Cheslin’s message to Olu and to know that he also told Olu to never stop trusting in God because I tell Olu that every day.” Oluthando’s journey has been marked by challenges from before he was born. As previously reported, when Natasha was seven months pregnant, doctors discovered that Oluthando’s foot was connected underneath his knee and warned that the baby might not survive. When he was born, doctors confirmed that he had no other disabilities except for his short leg. On 4 August 2018, a day before his first birthday, part of his foot was amputated, and his leg was lengthened to accommodate a future prosthesis. Natasha said the journey to securing a new prosthetic leg began in 2025 after Oluthando outgrew his previous one. She made an appointment with his doctor, Dr Ruan Lundt, who, to her surprise, offered to pay for the most expensive part of the prosthetic leg while Good Samaritan Hennie van Zyl generously paid for the outstanding balance. Natasha said Oluthando has adapted well to his prosthetic leg and is now living life as a happy child. “If he could sleep in the prosthetic leg, he would. He doesn’t really use crutches anymore unless his stump is a little sore, but he’s doing well. He is just a happy child and enjoys life to the fullest,” said Natasha. She said Oluthando celebrated his birthday with a party at school, where he took cupcakes featuring himself and Cheslin. Natasha said the design was based on an image she had previously created using ChatGPT, depicting Oluthando as a Springbok rugby player with his face and a blade on his leg. “Olu took the cake, and he kissed it, and he said he would never forget that Cheslin spoke to him. I think my child’s year is made,” said Natasha.

Fountains Mall spreads cheer at Ons Tuiste THE Fountains Mall has thanked the Kouga community for its generosity after a successful Xmas in July fundraiser benefiting Ons Tuiste, an old age home in Humansdorp. The fundraiser collected a cash donation along with dry ingredients, toiletries and other much-needed items, which were handed over during a morning spent with some of the home’s residents. Fountains Mall extended particular thanks to Apex Synergy, CC Prints and Father Christmas for their contributions to the initiative. “Thank you, Kouga, for caring,” the mall said.

Residents of Ons Tuiste enjoyed a visit from the Fountains Mall team, who delivered a donation and spent time with them during the Xmas in July fundraiser.

Environmental award recognises St Francis United FOR the boys of St Francis United, football is where it starts, but it is certainly not where it ends. The local club has been recognised by the Kouga Municipality with an Environmental Award, acknowledging its commitment to teaching young players about conservation, protecting the coastline and developing a sense of responsibility for the community they call home. The recognition reflects a programme that combines football with practical life lessons, helping young people grow both on and off the field. A partnership with purpose For the past two years, SUPERSPAR Village Square, St Francis Bay, has selected St Francis United as its preferred community organisation to support during 2026. The partnership was built on a shared belief that investing in young people should extend beyond providing sporting opportunities. Instead, the focus has been on creating experiences that build confidence, develop character and encourage the boys to become active custodians of the environment. Over the last two years, the team has regularly taken part in environmental clean-ups, hosted educational outings and community activities that introduce the team to the rich natural and maritime heritage of St Francis. Learning from the community The programme has taken the boys well beyond the football pitch. Visits to the Shipwreck Museum, guided walks along the Wildside coastline, tours of the lighthouse precinct and the Osprey wreck as well as time spent at the Port of St Francis, have given the boys a deeper understanding of the area’s history, fishing industry, ocean economy and marine environment. Support from organisations such as

the Kromme Enviro-Trust, the NSRI and members of the local fishing community has also helped bring these experiences to life. Building young men Richard Moolman, owner of SUPERSPAR Village Square, says supporting St Francis United has always been about much more than football. “Community investment should leave a lasting legacy. Matt and his team are helping these young men grow into responsible members of our community. Football opens the door, but the lessons they are learning about respect, teamwork and looking after the environment will stay with them long after the final whistle.” Club owner Matt Davies says the award belongs to every player who has embraced the programme. “We want these boys to understand that they have a responsibility to care for the place where they live. “Football gives us the opportunity to bring them together, but every outing, every clean-up and every conversation helps shape the kind of people they will become. This award belongs to the boys because they have taken that message to heart.” A win for the whole community The Environmental Award is recognition of what can be achieved when local businesses, community organisations and volunteers work together. For St Francis United, success is no longer measured only by results on a scoreboard. It is also reflected in young people who understand the value of protecting their environment, respecting their community and taking pride in where they live. In a town where the coastline, rivers and natural beauty define everyday life, those may prove to be the most important victories of all.

Junior-bofbal sprei vlerke na Jeffreysbaai HANNES SCHOEMAN

Jeffreys Bay tide table

"Laura Wolvaardt is my gunstelingspeler en is vir my 'n groot inspirasie en 'n puik Protea-kaptein."
