Slay-suspect appears

A 37-year old man believed to have been involved in the hit that claimed the life of well-known businesswoman and taxi owner Julia Alam (59) appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

The police confirmed the suspect was arrested in Cape Town over the weekend and two vehicles had been impounded and a firearm seized.

Brigadier Novela Potelwa, a provincial police spokesperson, reported that an extensive investigation was launched and several people questioned following Alam’s murder on Thursday 7 August at approximately 15:40 at the Whale Coast Mall in Hermanus.

“As a consequence, on Saturday 9 August the suspect was charged. The shooting incident is believed to be taxi-conflict related. Serious violent crime investigators are still hard at work in search of more suspects.”

Sources say one of the vehicles that were impounded is a minibus believed to have been used as the getaway vehicle after the fatal shooting. Alam was exiting the mall when three shooters reportedly approached her and fired several shots, hitting her in the torso and head.

Her relatives gathered at the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Monday for the suspect’s first court appearance. They thanked the investigative team for their dedication and the speedy arrest, adding, “Let Julia’s death not be in vain, let this motivate you to catch those responsible for the murder of her husband and other taxi owners who were also shot and killed before them.”

The case against Ntandazo Sipele was postponed to 20 August for bail application.

BETRAYAL

A close family friend said if the rumours that a taxi from Zwelihle was used as a getaway vehicle, are true, then it is a betrayal that cuts very deep.

“The taxi industry in Hermanus isn’t that big and Zwelihle is a village where everybody knows everyone else’s business.

“To think that someone who knew her may directly or indirectly be involved is very, very disappointing and shocking.’’

Approached for comment, Alam’s family indicated they were not ready yet to speak to the media.

The family friend, however, confirmed that Alam had refused to live in fear or go into hiding after her husband Jeffrey Zolile Alam was gunned down in broad daylight at the bustling Zwelihle Taxi Rank on 26 February.

Two others who were reportedly sitting with him at the time were wounded.

One of these men, Simon Nodom, was gunned down the following evening (Thursday 27 February 2025) at approximately 19:00 as he was sitting in his vehicle in Phola Street, Zwelihle.

He reportedly suffered 11 gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the scene.

At the time Alam said she believed the spate of shootings that took place that week was the result of a fight between the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) and Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) over the route between Hermanus and Bellville.

Inwoners ontstoke oor ‘oorlog’

She also confirmed her husband was chosen as chairperson of Codeta in the Overstrand with Simon Nodom elected as his vice-chairperson after the disbandment of the Overstrand Taxi Association (OTA).

The couple had moved out of Zwelihle last year due to fears for their safety after it became known that both their names were reportedly on a hit list. Alam stated that she had been informed she was supposed to have been “taken out” first.

Despite this and the fact that her loved ones pleaded with her to leave the area the businesswoman refused, saying she would not run away.

The fact that she was shot and killed in broad daylight in a very public space, said a family friend, tells them that the shooters “were desperate to finish the job”.

“To me it looked like she went into a mode of ‘I don’t care’ after her husband was murdered, as if she already knew she would follow.

“She was very obstinate and would always follow her own mind.”

GROWING BUSINESS

This single-mindedness is undoubtedly part of the basis of the successful taxi business she started approximately three decades ago with her husband and sister.

The friend recalled Alam was working at a local restaurant at the time and started off by transporting some of her co-workers in a car before buying a minibus.

“From there, business grew and now the business has a fleet of taxis and buses.”

Nceba Enga, chairperson of Codeta, said Alam’s murder came as a great shock as

a peace summit was held last Monday, followed by a meeting between Cata and Codeta on Wednesday to ensure peace within the taxi industry.

“We have no evidence to say who was responsible, but that is why this comes as a big shock,” Enga stated.

Alam’s funeral is at 11:00 on Sunday 17 August at St Peter’s Anglican church, Hermanus.

Keeper of the palliative flame

Dale Heim sees herself as a keeper of humanity’s most intimate stories – whispered confessions, defiant last wishes and unexpected moments of grace during life's closing chapters.

Now this Overstrand-based palliative-care nurse of more than 50 years’ standingis sharing these profound experiences in a new book, Dying Ways: A Palliative Nurse’s Tales of Life with the Dying, released on 8 August. “The aim of my book is to break the silence around mortality,” she said. “Eighty percent of people fear discussing death and this book transforms fear into acceptance.”

The pages come alive with extraordinary final chapters: a tantric teacher who swims with dolphins as her ultimate act of freedom, a grandmother who dances proudly displaying butterfly tattoos over mastectomy scars, and a World War II survivor serenaded by the Hallelujah Chorus as she draws her final breath. “In the end there is only the story we leave behind,” Heim reflects, capturing the book’s central philosophy.

From her time as a nurse in trauma wards to quiet hospice rooms she reveals with unflinching honesty and deep compassion how death reshapes not just the dying but the living. “As a trauma specialist and an advocate for integrative oncology I pioneer

holistic approaches to end-of-life care in South Africa, even when such methods were considered controversial.”

Heim’s work demonstrates that dying is not merely an end, but what she describes as “poignant, human art”.

The book doesn’t shy away from South Africa’s unique cultural complexities around death and grieving. Heim’s stories reveal common threads across each story: the search for forgiveness, the courage to live fully even as life fades and the profound lessons that death teaches about what truly matters.

This book will also resonate with readers who have appreciated Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air and Caitlin Doughty’s Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. “I would like to see my Dying Ways:

A Palliative Nurse’s Tales of Life with the dying serve as an essential companion for health-care workers, family caregivers and anyone grappling with mortality’s shadow,” Heim said.

She also reminded readers that death is a part of life, and despite all the pain and ugliness holds poetry and beauty too. “You can live at peace with your own death, and that of those you love.”

The book includes a comprehensive “Need Support?” section featuring recommended books, music and resources for continuing the journey through grief and acceptance. Dying Ways: A

Palliative Nurse’s Tales of Life with the Dying is available across multiple platforms. The book can be purchased through major platforms including Amazon, Google, Apple and Nook, or by visiting sought-after retailers.

This is an extract: The Girl with the Butterfly Tattoo: Sibby was “hip”. With her mop of grey curls and her mahogany-tanned body she stood out in a crowd. She wore her mature beauty like a crown. For several months I saw her regularly at our meetups.

Then she disappeared from the group. No-one was sure where she’d gone, as she wasn’t particularly social outside of our group at the tidal pool. I worried, but what

else could I do but wait?

When Sibby reappeared at the tidal pool several months late, she had lost a lot of weight and all her beautiful grey curls. At age 68 Sibby was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy. She opted to have chemotherapy and small doses of radiation for spots of cancer on the lung.

Things had been hard for her in the time she was gone, but Sibby had not lost her will to live. Here was the perfect example of ‘Listen to the diagnosis, but the prognosis is up to you’. Whatever your condition, the path forward is still up to you. How you live with the diagnosis is the most important

thing, not the diagnosis itself.

Sibby was determined to make the best of things while she could, so she asked me for help.

We talked, then I started Sibby on several treatments, including a ketogenic diet, ozone treatment and other alternative therapies. My purpose was to help build up her immune system.

Sibby thrived under our new treatment plan. Her hair grew back into a mop of grey curls, and the scars on her chest healed. She looked like a better version of her old self… but the true butterfly had not yet emerged.

Summer was in full swing and Sibby decided to tattoo her chest with two large green butterflies and proudly never covered her chest again at the beach. I remember the happiness and pride on her face when she came to show off her new tattoos. Whatever her diagnosis, she was living her best life and determined to carry on until her time arrived to fly into the next world. Sibby did well. After the mastectomy, chemo and other treatments, the cancer went into remission, and she lived as well as she could.

Kankervereniging hou sy eerste plaaslike Vrywilligersdag

Mitzi Buys

Ek is doodgelukkig as ek my medemens tot hulp kan wees.”

KANSA-vrywilligers bied kritieke ondersteuning in ’n wye reeks rolle, insluitend: geselskap vir kankerpasiënte, fasilitering van KANSA- inligtings- en ondersteuningstoonbanke by openbare hospitale, die leiding van ondersteuningsgroepe, die bevordering van gesondheidsinligting in gemeenskappe sowel as die ondersteuning van administratiewe take by KANSAsorgsentrums.

LETTERS/BR EWE

Briewe

Managed to talk and listen

On Monday morning 4 August I travelled to Gansbaai to try and help find common ground between disgruntled residents and the Overstrand Municipality.

On my way there I recalled a similar situation in 2018 when violence erupted in Hermanus, resulting in hundreds of millions in damages to property, serious injuries to people, but above all, damaged relationships and destroyed trust among communities that live side by side.

I am writing this letter with a great sense of relief, because on this Monday we managed to talk and listen to one another with respect and an underlying belief that the problems that led to the protest can be solved.

I want to thank the communities of Gansbaai and Hermanus, and I want to thank the Overstrand Municipality and all other government role-players who made this day a peaceful day and not a day of violence and destruction as we can remember from the events in 2018. In 2018 all involved lost something. On Monday everyone was a winner.

Listening to the practical challenges poor and vulnerable people are faced with and the trade-offs they make daily cannot be ignored. I am getting a sense we have designed and are trying to implement a type of government that is suited for the country we dream to be, but in fact it is failing the society that we are.

I am calling for a debate on what would constitute a dignified life in the real South Africa, and what the role of government must be in providing this opportunity of according dignity to all legal residents.

My portfolio involves providing basic services such as water services, electricity, waste removal and other basic municipal services. Also, environmental and ecological services that are needed for a dignified life.

When I have this conversation with colleagues or people in the street I engage with, one of the first responses I get is that there is no money to pay for more subsidised services for poor communities.

media community news

However, as I listened to the issues being put on the table, I felt it was necessary to be honest and admit that government in South Africa, national, provincial and local, has failed the poor and vulnerable people of our country. We are currently grappling with issues caused by 30 years of government marred by ingrained corruption and looting of state resources. This has left us all the poorer, but it is the poor and vulnerable in our communities who suffer the most.

I beg to differ; a lack of money is not South Africa’s problem. Our problem is one of weak leadership and bad management.

Overstrand Municipality and the affected communities of Gansbaai and Hermanus showed last Monday that strong leadership and competent management can lead the way to finding solutions to even the most pressing challenges.

WESTERN CAPE MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

Daar was werklik iets vir almal. Hermien, BLOEMFONTEIN

Family of the late Julia Alam takes issue

This letter is in response to Gcobani Ndzongana’s post on social media following the death of our relative Julia Alam.

Your message, though cloaked in the language of grief, drips with bitterness, blame and unresolved ego, and it’s disturbing that someone would post such a long, self-centered and accusatory monologue publicly just after someone has died violently.

Let’s be clear: this is not a tribute, but a public attack on the dead.

How dare you, Gcobani? How dare you turn a woman’s violent death into a twisted confession of your own self-pity, your grievances, political frustrations and bruised ego?

You wrote a public eulogy that isn’t about the victim; it’s about you. And worse, it reads as if you’re almost celebrating, hiding behind fake words such as “I still love you” while accusing the dead of betrayal, devil worship, hatred and greed. Who speaks like this when someone has

just been murdered? Unless... deep down you’re glad she’s gone? You pretend to mourn, but your tone exposes something uglier.

“This is a death I don’t celebrate,” you say, but the mere fact of saying these words hints you may be celebrating, even subconsciously.

You use religious language to suggest she was being led by Satan; you weaponise family ties to paint her as a traitor and then finish off with “May God forgive you all your sins.” That’s not grief, that’s condemnation.

This is not mourning. This is character assassination from someone who sounds as if they still wish they had the last word. And now, with her dead and unable to defend herself you’re taking your shot.

You mention that she “betrayed the girl child”.

What kind of man talks like that about a murdered woman?

A man who is trying to rewrite the story, frame himself as the hero and the victim as the villain.

You name all those families as if you’re trying to build a courtroom case, not honour the dead.

This is not a eulogy. It’s a calculated public take-down wrapped in emotional manipulation and self-righteousness. If you really respected her you would have remained silent.

Or, at the least, you would have shown maturity, humility and grace. But instead, you saw an opportunity to paint yourself as the martyr, and you took it right in the hour of tragedy.

Your post is not love; it is a public betrayal of everything you claim to stand for. If anything, you’ve made yourself look suspicious, heartless and even vindictive.

The family of the late Julia Alam

Women fêted by PSG

PSG Wealth in Hermanus celebrated remarkable women at its “leaving a legacy” morning on Thursday.

Wealth Manager at PSG Wealth Hermanus, Jaanre Muller, who has 17 years’ experience in finance, told the women in her welcome address: “Today is a celebration of all the remarkable women in the room, many of whom have built communities, nurtured families and broken barriers.”

She was very proud to introduce keynote speaker Karien Basson, a seasoned media professional with more than 20 years’ sterling experience in the field. She is the owner of First Media & Events, a celebrated author and a certified life coach. Basson contributes to Finesse Voelgoed magazine and plays an active role in the Young Presidents' Organisation (YPO) Greater Cape, which

focuses on women and family portfolios.

Starting her speech with “I am…”, she shared much insight into how women can take charge of their financial futures and create a meaningful impact that promises to fill them with a strong sense of accomplishment, personal power, connection and spiritual enrichment.

Basson took her listeners along with her on a life journey that also took in some years of feeling unworthy and that what she was doing was just not enough. But as she went through the chapters of her life it became clear each piece of it was part of a larger puzzle. She concluded her talk with “I am… able to do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

There was a lucky draw, with a facial from Refine, one from Environ, a book by Basson and a food voucher from Oskars Bakery up for grabs.

Top musical duo back in Hermanus

The Hermanus Music Society is set to host an exceptional evening of classical music on 29 August when the acclaimed piano and soprano duo Jan and Clara Hugo perform at the Sandbaai Gereformeerde Kerk.

The South African-Italian musical partnership, formerly based in Paris and recently relocated to Cape Town, promises an intimate concert featuring some of the most romantic works in the French classical repertoire.

Jan and Clara Hugo’s story began in 2015 at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig, Germany, where both were students. Since their first meeting the duo has built an impressive reputation across Europe and South Africa, specialising in historical Bel Canto repertoire that showcases both technical mastery and emotional depth.

Their recent relocation from Paris to Cape Town marks an exciting new chapter, bringing world-class musical artistry closer to South African audiences who have long followed their international career.

The concert programme reads like a love letter to French classical music, featuring works by four of the country’s most celebrated composers:

• Hector Berlioz (1803-1869): La mort d'Ophélie and excerpts from Les Nuits d’été including Le spectre de la rose

• Claude Debussy (1862-1918): Selected pieces from Images for piano solo

• Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924): Six melodies for voice and piano

This carefully curated selection promises to take audiences on an emotional journey through the golden age of French art song and piano literature, showcasing both Clara’s soprano artistry and Jan's

The evening begins at 17:45 with wine and canapés, allowing music lovers to mingle before the 18:30 concert start. The intimate setting of Sandbaai Gereformeerde Kerk provides the perfect acoustic environment for this chamber music experience.

Off-road enthusiasts are revving their engines for what promises to be the most challenging hillclimb event in South African motorsport history, which takes place on 30 August at the Grabouw 4x4.

The Ultimate Hill Climb Challenge 2025, organised by Off-Road Adventures and Grabouw 4x4, will see fearless drivers attempt to conquer the never-before-tackled Willie’s Poort.

“This hill has never been attempted before,” Off-Road’s Willie Landman announced, setting the stage for what could become a legendary event in the off-road community. Willie’s Poort represents the ultimate test of driver skill, vehicle capability and sheer determination.

The innovative scoring system adds a strategic element to the raw power and skill required. Drivers will navigate a marked route divided into sections, earning points for each section. The competition features four distinct categories, each offering different routes to victory:

• King of the Hill – The ultimate prize for those who can conquer the entire hill with the least points lost, shortest time, and most spectacular driving display;

• Highest point reached – For drivers who push their limits to reach new heights, judged on points lost, time, and spectacle;

• Most spectacular drive – Recognizing the artistry and showmanship that makes offroad driving a spectator sport.

With only 20 spots available this exclusive event promises intense competition among South Africa's top off-road drivers.

The R800 entry fee includes an official Ultimate Hill Climb 2025 T-shirt, making participation a badge of honour in the offroad community. Winners in each category will receive trophies and prize money, with the King of the Hill claiming the ultimate bragging rights and top honours. Recognising the extreme nature of the challenge, organisers have implemented comprehensive safety measures. All participants must complete indemnity forms, and a medical team will be stationed on the hill throughout the event to ensure immediate response capability. “Safety is our top priority,” explained event organisers. “We want drivers to push their limits, but we’re

nation of marathon and a trail run. You definitely have something that will grow into a big marathon.”

taking every precaution to ensure everyone goes home safely.”

Interested drivers are encouraged to apply immediately as the limited spots are expected to fill quickly. The combination of the unique venue, innovative competition format and exclusive nature of the event has already generated significant buzz in the off-road community.

One potential participant noted: “This is a challenge every serious off-road driver dreams of. Willie’s Poort has been sitting there, waiting for someone brave enough to take it on.” Who will be crowned its first-ever King? The answer lies just over the horizon, where skill meets courage and legends are born.
