When Cynthia Ntanjana hugged her son Desenela “Tiny” Ntanjana goodbye early on Thursday 1 May, she never could have imagined it would be the last time she would hold her lastborn close

Tiny (7), as he was commonly known, Lulo Nkontso and a third child who hadn’t been identified at the time of going to press lost their lives last week when the taxi they were travelling in from Masakhane to Hermanus collided with two other vehicles on the R43 just outside Stanford before overturning Captain Sithembele Xuba, Stanford Police Station commander, described the scene as “very tragic and traumatic” with injured people and pieces of wreckage strewn across the road surface

“It was even more heartbreaking when the families of the injured and the deceased arrived,” he stated Xuba confirmed three vehicles had been involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of the three children “All the injured, including those from the other two vehicles, were transported

Three children lose their lives, several others injured

to hospital A culpable homicide docket has been registered and the cause of the accident will be investigated ”

The R43 between Stanford and Gansbaai was closed for several hours while rescue workers attended to the injured, preliminary investigations were conducted and the scene was cleared of all debris

Councillor Andrew Komani said the community of Masakhane is in a state of shock as they have never experienced something of this nature before

“Members of the community have visited the affected families to offer their support and assistance The community would also like to visit the scene where the accident happened to light candles and say prayers Everyone at the school is shocked and devastated because they lost three young learners The school will have a memorial service on Wednesday 7 May ”

LAST GOODBYE

Ntanjana recalled how she had hugged young Tiny before she left him tucked under a blanket on the couch in front of the TV. “I didn’t even know about the event because I didn’t sign any permission slip ”

She said after receiving a message about the accident hours later she had a feeling that something was wrong

“I asked my cousin to check on Tiny and my granddaughter Khanya, but he informed me that they weren't there ”

She then contacted a friend of Khanya’s who informed her her granddaughter was safe She discovered much later that Tiny had been involved in the accident Her loud scream upon receiving the news prompted her employer to rush her to the scene where she was informed the bodies had been removed and that the survivors had been transported to hospital

The loss of her laatlammetjie who was born after a very difficult pregnancy when she was 42, said Cynthia, rocked her to her core

“I am broken, but I have to be strong for now to make the arrangements I struggle to sleep at night because I would always hold him close to me when we slept, and now I miss his warmth ”

Vuyokazi Nkontso said she too found out her daughter Lulo had passed when she arrived at the hospital where she was taken after the accident, which she got to know about only after reading

about it on social media

“Lulo was very bright and loved to read, especially English books She even got an award for English last year She dreamt of being a doctor one day ” She expressed her gratitude for the community’s support and Overstrand Acting Mayor Lindile Ntsabo’s visit to the families of the bereaved, accompanied by several councillors

Ntsabo expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the grieving families and everyone affected by this devastating loss He also wished those who were injured in the accident a speedy and full recovery

Tracey Lynn-Henn, chaiperson of the political party ACC Overstrand, called on authorities to investigate the cause of the accident, to hold those responsible for the fatal accident accountable and to find ways to improve road-safety measures to avoid the repeat of similar incidents

She also expressed condolences: “No parent should bury their children Words fail me to describe the pain they must be going through Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased as well as the entire community of Masakhane ”
