Afrikaans vier amptelike 100 in styl

Charlyn Dyers, wie se wortels diep in Gendadendal lê Dié emeritus professor in linguistiek

Daisies dying after devlopment

More than 200 years ago Alexander von Humboldt, a German geographer and naturalist, noted that the effects of the human species’ intervention on the natural environment were already “incalculable”. The CEO of Casabio, Dr David Gwynne-Evans, can testify to the devastating events that can cause longterm disaster.

In a letter to Hermanus Times he wrote: “As a youth I delighted in the annual displays of daisies in the open plots of Onrus. I became intimately familiar with the route down the rickety stone path, through the municipal campsite, under the sweet-smelling milkwoods, and to the coast where I spent many enchanting holidays interacting with the intertidal life. As I grew older the empty plots between houses gradually disappeared The campsite was fenced off, denying easy access to the coast. Then, in 1998, while serving as a municipal horticulturist managing teams for both Fernkloof and Parks, Kidbrooke Retirement Home became the first housing development to replace the pristine Bot River protea-veld above the R43, the road leading to Hermanus.”

Gwynne-Evans voiced his objections to the local conservationists when Kidbrooke was first mooted, stating it would set a precedent for development on the mountain slopes.

“The conservationist assured me it would be a once-off event and now, 25 years later, development has now encroached on nearly all the lowland vegetation, including the lower slopes between Hawston and Hermanus, except, ironically, where dense Eucalyptus persists.”

As part of his botany honours thesis, he tracked five populations of the rare and exceptionally special bokmakierie-stert Witsenia maura down. “This

flagship species, an ancient and local relative of the iris, is pollinated by sunbirds and serves as an indicator of ecosystem health, particularly because it survives only in aquifer-fed seepages that have flowed for millions of years. I established that each population was valuable, possessing its own unique genetic signature due to long-term isolation. These sensitive stream dwellers have since vanished from the Mossel River, been built over in a nearby park, fallen victim to the construction.” He said the only known Onrus mountain population now lay within the urban confines of Onrus Manor and was indistinguishable from the surrounding sprawl

“This is despite the National Environmental Management Act, which stipulates that environmental authorisation is required if development will impact within 32 m of a river or stream bank where the flood line is known.”

In 2022 Gwynne-Evans discovered a new species of Hermannia “Some months ago I noticed that the plot, containing a delightful array of lowland species, had been brushcut!” The reason soon became clear; a new development of 12 townhouses is planned for this plot.

“My wish is that this species, already hemmed in on all sides, actively destroyed across its natural distribution, and now threatened with extinction due to this development, be allowed to regenerate and be actively managed.

“We had reached a critical point where virtually every available piece of land had been earmarked for development.

“If we are to protect any of the precious lowland habitats where housing is typically assigned, we urgently need city planners to actively and transparently set aside land for conservation:

Adult baboon shot, killed

An adult male baboon, known as PBM1, was found dead in Pringle Bay on 29 April

Officials from Overstrand Municipal Baboon Management, CapeNature and the South African Police Service (Saps) responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation A suspected entry wound was found on the left side of PBM1’s chest, but no clear evidence was found to determine who was responsible for the incident.

According to Dean O’Neill, Municipal Manager, PBM1’s body was taken to the Caledon Veterinary Clinic for a full autopsy

“X-rays revealed seven projectiles of varying sizes: one in the subcutaneous tissue of the head, four in the chest area, and two in the abdominal area. The age (and therefore the origin) of six of these projectiles could not be determined. No

other abnormalities were noted. The autopsy confirmed a small puncture wound on the left lateral side of the chest, along with a penetrating wound to the lung tissue and excessive bleeding in the left thoracic cavity ”

An enquiry docket was opened and a police investigation was underway All relevant information, including the retrieved projectile, had been handed over to assist in the investigation

Residents were urged to contact the police on 028 271 8200 if they had any information “Residents are reminded that Overstrand Municipality holds the necessary permits and training to implement its baboon adaptive management plan, using non-lethal and non-harmful tools and techniques,” O’Neill said.

“It is an offence to hunt a baboon without authorisation.”

‘Learning is fun’

The Grade R learners of Lukhanyo Primary School in Zwelihle had loads of fun learning valuable skills such as teamwork on the school’s quarterly Fun Day.

The day, organised at the school by two final-year occupational-therapy (OT) students from the University of Stellenbosch, was held on Wednesday 23 April at the Zwelihle Sports Field. It offered a delightful mix of physical activity, fun, celebration and teamwork

The students, Kaylin McWilliams and Kerryn Quiding, who were completing their practical studies at Lukhanyo Primary, reported that approximately 183 students had taken part in the structured physical activities.

These Fun Days, which are held every term for foundation-phase learners, are aimed at introducing them to the world of movement, exercise and teamwork in a playful and very supportive environment.

“Fun Days do not only provide a space for fun and games,” said Kaylin McWilliams, “but are about giving the learners access to experiences that support their gross motor development, coordination, concentration, and confidence in ways that they might have not been exposed to otherwise.”

The day kicked off with much excitement as the learners walked eagerly to the field singing and chanting. Five thoughtfully designed activity stations featured movement games such as rock and spoon races, beanbag toss, jumping activities and goal kicking The students, assisted by the Grade 7 learner council,

remedial class and school staff, helped guide the learners through each activity.

“This event is not only an exciting and developmentally stimulating experience for the Grade R learners,” said Kerryn Quiding, “but it also serves as a powerful platform for the Grade 7 and remedial class learners to build and practise their leadership skills.”

At the end of the event, each Grade R learner received a lucky packet containing chips, a juice and a lollipop, thanks to the incredible generosity of Yorke Cash & Carry, who provided a generous discount on the items

“Another big thank you to OK Foods at Gateway who donated Fizzers, to Buco for allowing us to borrow their gazebo, and to Spar for providing a large celebratory cake, which was shared between the winning class with the ‘most spirit’ and cooperation throughout the day,” said Kerryn and Kaylin.

“A heartwarming moment was when one class teacher made sure to divide their cake so another class could enjoy it too; she even further extended her generosity by thinking of all the Learner Council members as well.”

The OT students also thanked Vuyisani Mahela and Akhona Archie Jakuja, the sport coaches, who took on the tole of masters of ceremonies, the principal, Mr Morris Tshabalala and Anita Saaiman, the supervising occupational therapist.

The school’s next Fun Day is planned for the upcoming term, this time for the Grade 2 learners.

Stap vier Vryheidsdag
